GREENOUGH, G. B.
London: Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, & Brown, 1819. FIRST EDITION. Modern calf and marbled boards; small library stamp at top of title, accession number in outer margin of title, but a nice, clean copy. First edition. This is the only independent work written by Greenough, and consists of a series of essays critical of the plutonists. It was later translated into German, French and Italian. Greenough (1778-1855), born in London, was orphaned at an early age, and adopted by his maternal grandfather who made a fortune in popular (quack) remedies, including the (infamous) Pectoral lozenge from Balsam of Tolu. Originally intending to study for law, he came under the influence of Blumenbach and devoted himself to the study of natural history. Elected a Fellow of the Royal Society, he later founded the Geological Society of London, the Royal Geographical Society, and the British Science Association. Greenough spearheaded the publication of the Geological Sociey's Geological map of England and Wales, published later the same year as this work.

Ross, John
London: John Murray, 1819. [4],xxxix,[1],252,[2],cxliv pp., plus three folding maps, ten folding plates (four colored), eighteen single-page plates (ten colored), and errata slip. Quarto. Contemporary polished calf, gilt and blind tooled. Spine rebacked, gilt and blind tooled, gilt leather labels. Corners bumped, boards slightly scuffed. Lightly foxed, some offsetting from plates. Very Good. One of the pioneering voyages of high Arctic discovery. Led by Sir John Ross, the officers included future Arctic greats William Parry, James Clark Ross, and Edward Sabine. Ross sailed up Davis Strait and westward into Lancaster Sound, seeking a northwest passage. A mirage deceived him into believing the end of the Sound was blocked by a high range of mountains, despite the disbelief of his colleagues. The expedition returned to England in 1818 with much fanfare and Ross was promoted, but the false conclusions were widely challenged when this account was published, and involved Ross in lifelong controversy. Aside from its incorrect geographical conclusions, however, the expedition bore important fruits in encouraging Arctic exploration, training future leaders, and compiling accurate geographical and ethnological data. This copy is particularly notable for the beautiful extensive contemporary coloring of the plates. One of the most remarkable plates in the book shows the encounter of Ross and his officers- decked out in full Royal Navy dress uniform- encountering the Eskimos in Lancaster Sound. The image was created by John Stackhouse, who was serving as the native interpreter for … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

"[Jacob Grimm] created, almost out of nothing, the scientific study of German and Germanic mythology, philology, poetry and law, mostly in the years 1806-29 when [he] was a badly paid library-assistant in Cassel. His 'German Grammar' is in fact a 'Germanic Grammar', tracing the development of this branch of the Indo-European language family [... Grimm] explained the differences of the Germanic languages from their sister tongues and within themselves by showing the determinable regularity of hitherto unnoticed or inexplicable phenomena such as the gradation and modification of vowels" (PMM). - This set does not include the volumes 3 and 4, which were not published until 1837. (Beagling) Wolstenholme, Dean
London: R. Reeve 151 Grafton Street, May 20. 1819. Hand-coloured aquatint engraved print. Engraved by Reeves. Image 24 x 19" aprox. "Dean Wolstenholme Snr became an artist in middle life after losing his then not inconsiderable wealth in a property deal which went wrong. Before moving to London in about 1800 he had lived in Herfordshire and Essex, pursuing a happy life devoted to foxhunting and coursing, painting a little for his own pleasure. In London he had to paint in earnest, bringing to the city memories of his earlier years. He exhibited a painting of coursing at the Royal Academy in 1803; fox hunting in 1804... and so on until shortly before his death in 1837. A large number of his hunting, coursing and shooting pictures were engraved... [His son, Charles Dean Wolstenholme Jnr. (1793-1883) also became an animal painter of note.] Both father and son populated their landscapes with horses and horsemen rather than painting commissioned equestrian portraits; and the pleasure of their work is their skill in depicting the English (Home Counties) countryside." It was the outcome of Dodwell's two tours through the region, the first in the company of Sir William Gell in 1801 taking in the Ionian Islands and the Troad; and the second in 1805-6, while technically as prisoner of war of the French, extensively covering the mainland, before making a return to the islands. Between them Dodwell and his Italian artist Simone Pomardi made over a thousand drawings, and Dodwell accrued an important numismatic collection and "an impressive collection of classical antiquities" (ODNB) While excavating tombs near Corinth, he was "informed by the villagers 'that a Jew of Corinth, who ha … [Click Below for Full Description]

L'HERITIER (Louis-François)
Paris, Ladvocat, 1819.
