[Click Below for Full Description]

"[Jacob Grimm] created, almost out of nothing, the scientific study of German and Germanic mythology, philology, poetry and law, mostly in the years 1806-29 when [he] was a badly paid library-assistant in Cassel. His 'German Grammar' is in fact a 'Germanic Grammar', tracing the development of this branch of the Indo-European language family [... Grimm] explained the differences of the Germanic languages from their sister tongues and within themselves by showing the determinable regularity of hitherto unnoticed or inexplicable phenomena such as the gradation and modification of vowels" (PMM). - This set does not include the volumes 3 and 4, which were not published until 1837. Front inner hinge of vol. 2 reinforced at rebinding. Stored in a magnificent giltstamped green half calf portofolio by Jacques P. Desmonts of Norwalk, Connecticut. (Beagling) Wolstenholme, Dean
London: R. Reeve 151 Grafton Street, May 20. 1819. Hand-coloured aquatint engraved print. Engraved by Reeves. Image 24 x 19" aprox. "Dean Wolstenholme Snr became an artist in middle life after losing his then not inconsiderable wealth in a property deal which went wrong. Before moving to London in about 1800 he had lived in Herfordshire and Essex, pursuing a happy life devoted to foxhunting and coursing, painting a little for his own pleasure. In London he had to paint in earnest, bringing to the city memories of his earlier years. He exhibited a painting of coursing at the Royal Academy in 1803; fox hunting in 1804... and so on until shortly before his death in 1837. A large number of his hunting, coursing and shooting pictures were engraved... [His son, Charles Dean Wolstenholme Jnr. (1793-1883) also became an animal painter of note.] Both father and son populated their landscapes with horses and horsemen rather than painting commissioned equestrian portraits; and the pleasure of their work is their skill in depicting the English (Home Counties) countryside." Contemporary russia by Gilmour of Salisbury with his ticket, narrow bands with dashed roll, spine gilt-lettered direct in second, third and fourth compartments, gilt quatrefoil lozenge in others, broad Greek key roll panel to sides enclosing a finer foliate roll, fleur-de-lis edge roll, vivid orange edges and endpapers, unusual broken zig-zag roll to turn-ins, dark orange silk page-markers still present, one still attached. A little shelfwear, some very skilful restoration on the joints and just into one lettered panel of the spine, light browning, and some off-setting to the tissue-guards, but plates and text clean. First edition of "this remarkable work" (Blackmer), describing both classical and modern Greece. It was the outcome of Dodwell's two tours through the region, the first in the company of Sir William Gell in 1801 taking in the Ionian Islands and the Troad; and the second in 1805-6, while technically as prisoner of war of the French, extensively covering the mainland, before making a return to the islands. Between them Dodwell and his Italian artist Simone Pomardi made over a thousand drawings, and Dodwell accrued an important numismatic collection and "an impressive collection of classical antiquities" (ODNB) While excavating tombs near Corinth, he was "informed by the villagers 'that a Jew of Corinth, who ha … [Click Below for Full Description]

L'HERITIER (Louis-François)
Paris, Ladvocat, 1819. "One of the principal sources for the history of the French colony of Napoleonic exiles in Texas" (William L. Clements Library, 'Fifty Texas Rarities, 1946, n°6). Talleyrand-Périgord, Charles Maurice de, French statesman (1754-1838).
1819. 8vo (184 × 116 mm). 1 p. on a single bifolium. To "mon cher comte", informing him of a detour to Paris to see Madame de Laval. - Talleyrand, one of the most powerful French statesmen of all time, whose career straddled the Ancien régime, Revolution and Restoration was successively a bishop, a revolutionary who assisted in the drafting of the Declaration of the Rights of Man, an exile in America, and Foreign Minister to both Napoleon and his successor, the restored Bourbon king, Louis XVIII. He was also, of course, a legendary womaniser. "He believed that power and intelligence were the perfume of courtship and he wielded them with deadly charm" (Schama). In this short note he writes that he intends to extend a journey, probably from his home at Valençay to Bourbonnes-le-Bains (Haute-Marne, a spa town) and pass via Paris, because he will have the chance to see Madame Laval "si elle passe par Paris comme je le crois". He writes that it will only extend his journey by 25 leagues (at least 100 miles). Madame Laval was the longest-standing of all his many mistresses. A noted hostess and lover of gambling, Talleyrand had first seen her at the coronation of Louis XVI and she soon became his lover. Despite other passions the two remained remarkably loyal to each other until the end of Talleyrand's life. Contemporary Aimée de Coigny characterised Madame de Laval as "changeant d'amants presque autant que d'années" and as "maïtresse de M. de Talleyrand quand elle était jolie, actuellement son amie très exigeante". - Trace of seal at upper left-hand corner, old folds, but fine. Templeton, Joseph
1819. Archive consisting of 166 letters (313 pages), plus approximately 560 pieces of paper ephemera, manuscript and some printed items, of which about â…“ concerns land and properties (deeds, grants, property maps, taxes, etc) mostly in St. Louis, and elsewhere, and with about â…” being other business, legal, and personal papers (household and daily expenditure receipts, repairs and services receipts, insurance policies, rent receipts, estate papers, loans, etc.), all dated between the years 1819-1911. The Rev. Joseph Templeton was born at Wheeling, Virginia, about 1805. He studied at Washington & Jefferson College, Class of 1835. He was stated to have been acceptable in society, respectable in studies, active in all religious movements, a complete and very popular man. At school he studied theology, obtained licensure and ordination somewhere in the south, and seems to have preached first at Delmonica, Georgia, and traveled as an evangelist as far as New Orleans. Returning, he settled as pastor at Bowling Green, Kentucky, and did not confine himself closely to his charge, but frequently and with astonishing success, held large meetings over all that part of the state and gathered great multitudes into the churches. He appears to have been pastor at Hopkinsville, at which, and also in a neighboring church, the accessions amounted to hundreds, and the whole country swept with a tide of religious feeling, he had no peer in the country. Rev. Templeton married Eleanor Sharp, daughter of Fidelio C. Sharp, Esq., a man of great wealth and influence. Together the couple had at le … [Click Below for Full Description]
