Thomas B. Wait, Boston, 1819. Bound in contemporary full leather sheep skin binding which has some wear and cracking at the top of the spine, and other minor scuffing, but is in much better shape than most similar bindings from the time period. The front inner board contains notes, mainly in pencil, that notes the book was bought in 1951 from Goodspeed's; and there is an inserted paper that 1,000 copies were printed. According to a recent PBA catalog "The first publication of the long-secret journals and proceedings of the United States Constitutional Convention. At the close of the convention, William Johnson, the secretary, delivered the materials to George Washington, the president of the convention, who in turn gave them to the Department of State in 1796. In 1818 Congress ordered that they be printed, which was accomplished under the supervision of John Quincy Adams, the Secretary of State. It is one of the major sources of the Founding period." Foscolo, Ugo
Londra, 1819 (16 novembre), Documento autografo originale. -- Foscolo arriva a Londra l’11 settembre 1816. [Click Below for Full Description]

SCOTT, Walter, Esq.
Edinburgh / London: Archibald Constable and Co. / Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, and Brown., 1819. Twelfth Edition. Leather. Fine. Twelfth Edition. Crown octavo, bound in mid-19th Century pebbled dark maroon morocco, heavily gilt on upper and lower covers, the sine with raised bands & decorated gilt in compartments, gilt titles, all edges gilt, inner dentilles; by Charles Tainton, Bookbinder, 102 High Street, Worcester, with his small blindstamp to upper corner of front free endpaper. 433 pp., yellow coated endpapers. Contemporary ink inscription to verso of front free endpaper, faint ink name to head of title leaf. Two tiny scuffed spots at base of front & rear hinges at spine base; a fine, bright copy in a remarkable and highly interesting period binding. Scott's most famous poem and influential narrative poem, originally issued in 1810. The poem has three main plots: the contest among three men to win the love of a woman; the feud and reconciliation of King James V of Scotland and James Douglas; and a war between the lowland Scots and the highland clans. The poem was tremendously influential in the nineteenth century, and inspired the Highland Revival. Little is known of Charles Tainton; he seems to have been a small provincial binder who worked in Worcester from at least 1851 (he is listed in Lascelle's Directory of that year) until 1862, when a bankruptcy notice for his bindery can be found in The London Gazette of June 20th of that year..

Complessive 95 tavv. incise in rame f.t. di ritratti, scene storiche, carte geografiche e medaglie. Freschissima copia in barbe. Among Ross's officers on the voyage were William Edward Parry, James Clark Ross, and Edward Sabine. Setting out in April of 1818, the expedition rediscovered Baffin Bay and its three Sounds, Smith, Jones, and Lancaster, thereby vindicating the reports made by William Baffin in 1616. Sailing some distance into Lancaster Sound, Ross sited a mirage which he believed to be a range of mountains blocking further passage. These he named the Croker Mountains in honour of the first secretary of the Admiralty, J.W.Croker. On his return to England, Ross's report was initially accepted as conclusive and he was promoted to Captain, but his contention that Lancaster Sound was landlocked was disputed by other members of the crew, notably by his second-in-command, William Edward Parry. Parry's view was supported by Sir John Barro … [Click Below for Full Description]

First edition of grammars and vocabularies for three languages spoken by Australian Aborigines, compiled by William Ridley, professor at Sydney University and Minister of the Presbyterian Church of New South Wales. Ridley (1819-1878), an English missionary, came to Sydney in 1850. He wished to learn these languages in order to teach the Aborigines and carry out missionary work among them. Since the Aborigines had no written language, the present book forms a primary source for the languages as they existed more than 150 years ago, when they had had less contact with the Western world. He writes that he found these Aboriginal languages to posses a remarkable regularity and exactness, and that they "indicate an accuracy of thought, and a force of expression, surpassing all that is commonly supposed to be attainable by a savage race". In 1866 that was a remarkably progressive notion. He also adds some notes on Aboriginal names and customs. The book is nicely produced, with lovely wood engravings and interesting as an early example of Australian colour printing. The coat of arms is much like the earliest one known, which dates from 1821, but the third quarter shows a barrel and other goods rather than a harpoon and anchor. With library stamps (including a cancellation stamp) on the endpapers and blank parts of the title-page, and a paper label with manuscript shelf-mark on the binding. In very good condition. The spine is somewhat faded and there is minor damage to the board edges, but the binding is also very good.

'Mazeppa' is followed by the 'Fragment', also known as 'Fragment of a Novel', an unfinished horror story that is one of the first in English to feature a vampire theme. NEW JERSEY. LAWS
1819. NEW JERSEY. LAWS. Acts of the Forty-Third General Assembly [?Eighty-Fourth Legislature] of the State of New-Jersey, at a Session Begun at Trenton, on the Twenty-Seventh Day of October, One Thousand Eight Hundred and Eighteen [?26 January 1860]. Trenton [etc.], 1819?1860. 42 consecutive sessions, in various unmatched bindings. Some early and most later volumes in shabby, dry and flaking 1880s leather bindings (internally fine throughout); other volumes variously in modern bindings, original wrappers as issued, or removed from bound volumes. Internally fine and complete and ready to rebind uniformly. The run, A remarkable complete run of the New Jersey session laws from 1819 through 1860, assembled piecemeal by us over many, many years, and ready for a collector to rebind. In 45 years of specializing in early and rare New Jerseyana, this is only the second consecutive pre-1861 run that we have been able to build, and it is highly unlikely that another one of this length could ever be assembled piecemeal. While volumes from the 1840s and 1850s still turn up, volumes from the 1830s are rarely seem, and volumes before 1830 are simply not out there. The core of this set was a run assembled by the pioneer New Jersey lawbook dealer Soney & Sage in the 1880s and bound in full leather for the distinguished New Jersey lawyer William H. Corbin (1851?1912). Unfortunately the leather was a poor grade and it is now dry and flaking, covers are detached, &c. All interiors are fine and complete, and the set is ready for a 21st century New Jersey collector to rebind in a nice, … [Click Below for Full Description]
