[and] Rights of Man; Being an Answer to Mr. Burke's Attack on the French Revolution. [and] .Part the Second: Combining Principle and Practice

      London: (I-III) R. Carlile; (IV-V) W.T. Sherwin, 1819-1818; 1817 - Two works in five parts bound in one volume. 8vo. 52; vi, 96; (vi), 58; vii, 98, (1); 118, iv, (2) pp. Recent speckled half calf over marbled boards, spine with raised bands, gilt lettered black label, gilt lettered direct to another two panels. Very good. Gimbel, cf. pp. 19 and 21 for I and II, p. 68 for III, pp. 93 and 109 for IV and V. According to the Norfolk Public Library catalogue these are 7th, 6th and 2nd British editions of the parts of the Age of Reason. The third part was first published in New York in 1807 as a separate work, before being republished in London thus in 1811 by Daniel Isaac Eaton. The long delay in its appearance in Britain can be ascribed to the controversy of his previous works and pursuance of the British government against Paine and his publishers. Indeed Eaton was himself tried and convicted for publishing this work, publishing an account of his trial the following year. Having been effectively suppressed the 1811 edition is scarce, with only three copies listed on Copac, and though this 1818 edition was sold more freely it is not commomly available either.

SPANISH AMERICA; OR A DESCRIPTIVE, HISTORICAL, AND GEOGRAPHICAL ACCOUNT OF THE DOMINIONS OF SPAIN IN THE WESTERN HEMISPHERE...

      Philadelphia: Printed and Published by Abraham Small, 1819. 482pp. plus folding map and colored plate. Contemporary tree calf, leather label. Corners a bit worn. Some light foxing on prelims. Three-inch tear in gutter margin of map. Very good, with the armorial bookplate of Daniel Webster. First American edition, after the two-volume London edition of the previous year. He relies heavily on other authorities, especially Humboldt. Includes sections on California, Florida, New Mexico, New Spain, Spanish possessions in the Caribbean, New Granada, Peru, Buenos Aires, Chile, and the like. The map shows North and South America. Bonnycastle later published several books about Canada. SABIN 6333. HILL 151 (note).

        View of the Port and Town of Newcastle Upon Tyne, from the Rope Walk, Gateshead

      1819 - Aquatint printed in colors, with additional hand-coloring. Originally published by the artist, Newcastle: 1819. A modern impression, printed on hand-made wove paper, with wide margins and in excellent condition. Thomas M. Richardson was a Newcastle-based artist who began his career as an engraver of local views. From 1818 he exhibited paintings in several places in London including the Royal Academy. Views of his native city and its environs were a staple of his output. In this view, we can identify several buildings which still stand: the neoclassical Moot Hall with its porticoed entrance, and the Castle Keep behind it. Toward the center of the composition, the neo-Gothic spire of St. Nicholas' church (now cathedral) rises above a terrace of houses.

        Remarks & Occurrences on Board the Timor of London on a Voyage to the Souther Whale Fishery. John T. Parker Commander. by Edward P. Perry. Boatsteerer.

      6/25/16. Folio, about 100 pages of manuscript entries. This is the complete journal of a South Atlantic whaling voyage that began March 2 1819 off the Isle of Wight, and ended February 9th 1820 off Gravesend. During this time the "Timor" caught thirty-four whales, mostly right whales with an occasional humpback, and stowed hundreds of barrels of oil - quite a successful trip for one of such short duration. She employed three boats, with two in reserve (which frequently joined the hunt), and caught most of her whales working out of Angra Pequena and Walvis Bays, off the coast of what is now Namibia, and in the waters northwest of South Africa. She also fished for a time with the English whale ship "Emma," including a strange agreement between the two ships during the first two weeks in June not to lower for a whale unless she had a calf with her! At one point the two ships got in a dispute over a whale, and the "Emma" departed about a month later, with "a full ship." There is plenty of action in this journal, and whales taken are represented by Perry's drawing, in ink or pencil, of whale flukes. But perhaps the most interesting aspect is the detail that Perry, who was a harpooner, goes into about the ship's whalecraft - whaling tools - and the preparations for whaling that took up the first three months of the voyage. There are frequent mentions of such things as breaking out gear, making drogues for the boats, bellows for the forge, fitting the grindstone and grindstone trough, sharpening lances and harpoons, "strapping two double & single purchase blocks to heave the whales lips in with," and practicing the chase in the ship's three main boats. Also, when they put into port the encountered "Hottentots" who are described in some detail, including a party of natives who had been sent off by an old missionary to sell cattle to the whalemen in order to raise money for the mission. This is an unusual and well written journal, bound in worn pigskin. The pages are clean and legible, and the overall condition is good.

        An Account of the Kingdom of Caubul, and its Dependencies in Persia, Tartary, and India: comprising a Vew of the Afghaun Nation, and a History of the Dooraunee Monarchy. The Second Edition, with an Entirely New Map.

      London: for Longman... and J. Murray, 1819., 1819. 2 volumes, octavo. Second edition. Vol.1: pp.xxiv; 512; Vol.2: xii; 495. With publisher's twelve-page advertisement leaflet inserted at the end of volume one. Complete with fourteen engravings, thirteen of which are hand coloured. The illustrations include a folding map and one fold-out plate. The rare 'Entire New Map' is present, being a particularly large hand-coloured folding plate (ten folds) in the centre of volume 1. This is not called for within the list of plates but is noted on the title page. An uncut copy, bound in original drab boards with a later paper respine to style. Internally clean, but for a couple of small institutional stamps, owner name to pastedown, three plates brittle with neat marginal repairs, some pge bolts unopened, fragile boards with some chipping and edgewear. Remains an attractive example, complete in boards. Mountstuart Elphinstone, a founder of British India, was appointed the first British envoy to the court of Kabul (1808) and became the Governor of Bombay (now Mumbai) in 181. He twice refused appointment as Governor-General of India, preferring to finish his two-volume work The History of India (1841). This title is considered a landmark text on Afghanistan and the Afghans and his account influenced British policy until the 1840s. Ephinstone College at the University of Mumbai was named in his honour and his statue stands in St Paul's Cathedral. Abbey Travel 504; Howgego II, E10.

According to Weinmann: Senefelder-Steiner-Haslinger 1, p. 167, the first issue (November 1819) has a printed price of "2 fl. 30 x" to the title. Göthel, p. 51, reverses the chronology: "The price was omitted [from the first issue] and re-engraved in a later issue as '2 fl. 30x'." Since the (erased) manuscript price to the present copy exceeds the printed price, Weinmann's hypothesis of a later deletion of the printed price seems more likely. Copies with a printed price other than "2 fl. 30 x." have not been located. Op. 30, in A major, is now counted as Spohr's 8th string quartet (see MGG2). The confusing numbering results from the fact that two of the three op. 29 quartets are actually later than op. 30.- [Op. 43]. Quatuor brillant [in E major] pour deux Violons, Alto et Violoncelle.         Hudibras (Three Volumes)

      Charles and Henry Baldwyn, London 1819 - Profusely extra-illustrated, with a handsome full morocco Riviere binding, signed by gilt turn-ins of each volume, and gilt tooled fleuron and volute cornerpiece decoration in spine compartments. 8vo. 24 by 14.5 cm. With 175 plates, 66 of which are in color. (Missing portraits of George Withers and Duns Scotus.) Even without the extra-illustration, this is a beautiful edition of Butler's classic mock epic, first published between 1663 and 1678. Emulating "Don Quixote", the work satirizes the hypocrises, pretensions and self-serving of the Presbyterians, represented by the title character, and the Independents, embodied most by the squire Ralpho. The two share humorous adventures that amply demonstrate their pedantry, greed, duplicity and cowardice while also showing the absurdity of their sectarian squabbles. The current set includes the copious notes of Zachary Grey (1688-1766), plus charming illustrations by John Thurston (1744-1822), a popular book illustrator in his time. Glazed endpapers. Rebacked professionally, with original spines laid on and the resulting repair being very inconspicuous, the only visible sign, and not a disconcerting one, being a very slight different in texture along the joint. Light edgewear. Scattered foxing, mostly light, with some plates more heavily afflicted. Notwithstanding these caveats, this remains a special and very attractive set, with great "curb appeal".

        Rosalind and Helen

      London: printed for C. and J. Collier,, 1819. A modern eclogue; with other poems. Octavo (204 x 135 mm). Finely bound by Riviere & Son in early 20th-century green crushed morocco, spine gilt in compartments with titles direct, triple rule to boards gilt, top edge gilt, inner gilt dentelles, dark blue coated endpapers. With the half title, and 4pp. publisher's advertisements at the rear. Spine faded to tan, otherwise a fine copy, fresh and with handsome margins. First edition, first issue, a fine fresh and generously margined copy with the half titles and advertisements, of Shelley's long poem "Rosalind and Helen", a conversational lament for a disappointed poet-reformer, set on the shores of Lake Como, begun in Marlowe and completed in 1818 at the baths of Lucca in Tuscany. The collection also includes the first book appearance of Shelley's most famous poem, the sonnet "Ozymandias", as well as first book appearances of two no less important lyrics "Lines Written on the Euganean Hills" and the "Hymn to Intellectual Beauty" which was composed in that famously gloomy yet fecund summer of 1816, spent on the shores of Lake Geneva with Mary, Claire Clairmont, Byron and Polidori, from which issued Mary's Frankenstein, Byron's Mazeppa, Polidori's The Vampyre, and also Shelley's "Mont Blanc".

        Collection of Printed Broadsides Relating to the Establishment and...

      1819. 18 Broadsides from an Early Nineteenth-Century Association Formed to Prevent Crime in Wiltshire [Broadsides]. [Great Britain]. [Tottenham Park Association]. [Collection of Printed Broadsides Relating to the Establishment and Activities of the Tottenham Park Association for the Protection of Persons and Property and for the Prosecution of Felons and Other Offenders]. Marlborough, England: Harold and Emberlin, 1819. 18 broadsides, 15 are 11-1/2" x 9", the others are 7-1/2" x 9," 13-1/4" 8-1/2" and 22" x 17." Light toning, fold lines, some minor tears and stains, all generally in very good condition. An interesting collection comprising 18 well-preserved items. * This collection traces the initial proposal, founding and development of the Tottenham Park Association for the Protection of Persons and Property, And for the Prosecution of Felons and other Offenders. It was one of several private associations, largely existing between 1780-1850, "made up of local property-owners, who came together to form an organization and raise a fund in order to find, arrest, and prosecute, at common expense, offenders against themselves and their property" (Philips). These associations went into decline with the establishment of formal police forces beginning with the establishment of the Metropolitan Police in 1829, the passing of the 1839 Rural Police Act and finally the County and Borough Police Act of 1856, which made it compulsory for all counties to have a police force. Most of the notices offer rewards for the recovery of stolen property, such as livestock, a set of curtains, a gate and a fence, apprehending offenders and removing "gipsies or other vagrants from the parishes." The other broadsides relate to the establishment, organization and meetings of the association. Philips in Hay and Snyder, eds., Policing and Prosecution in Britain 1750-1850 118.

        A description of the sights, or, instruments for pointing guns;

      royal 8vo., 3 engraved plates (2 of which are folding), vi (7) - 25 (2) 24 - 55 (1)pp., including the half-title (which has some soiling), original soiled boards, neatly rebacked. A very good large copy with the contemporary ownership signature of "Henry Beaufoy**, South Lambeth. April 1820", at head of title. A relatively little known contribution to military technology by William Congreve (1772-1828), best known now for his designs for military rockets, the "Congreve Rocket system", which he regarded as in every way superior to conventional military and naval ordnance. Among the 18 or so patents taken out by Congreve between May 1808 and February 1827, none appears, however, to be for his gun sights. * H.M.S. Liffey (1813-1827) was a 40 gun (later 50 gun) Endymion-class frigate built for the Royal Navy by Wigram, Wells & Green at Blackwall on the Thames. Launched in 1813, H.M.S. Liffey saw action in the First Burmese War but was finally broken up in July 1827. ** Henry Beaufoy was a son of the astronomer and physicist Mark Beaufoy (1764-1827), a founder member of the Society for the Improvement of Naval Architecture. It was Henry who in 1834 was to publish his father's experimental research into the relationship between hull shapes and water resistance.

      N.p. [Paris?] 1819 - One page, in French. 8vo. The Neapolitan-born Gaspare Luigi Pacifico Spontini (1774-1851) was a celebrated composer of operas in his day, who made his career in Paris under the patronage of the Empress Josephine. His most famous opera, LA VESTALE, premiered in Paris in 1807, and, according to Grove's Dictionary, underwent over 200 performances in Paris by the year 1824. As late as 1954, in fact, in celebration of the composer's 180th birthday, it enjoyed a revival at La Scala with Maria Callas in the leading role.*According to calendars, only these two years during Spontini's time in Paris had a September 22 which fell on Wednesday. Spontini left Paris in 1819 to accept a position with the Dresden opera.

      Paris: Etienne Michel and Arthus Bertrand, [1800]-1819. - 7 volumes, folio (16 6/8 x 10 inches). Half-titles. Engraved title-page to volume one after Percier et Thibaud engraved by Pillement and Née. 496 fine color-printed stipple-engraved plates FINISHED BY HAND (including more than 400 after P. J. Redouté and some 30 after Pancrace Bessa), and 2 engraved plates. Contemporary half calf gilt, marbled boards, all edges uncut (expertly rebacked preserving the original spines). Provenance: Anonymous ownership inscription: "G[ift] of Mr. John S. Ames, December 1951" on the verso of the title-page of each volume. Second edition, sometimes called the "Nouveau Duhamel" or, "New Duhamel", ONE OF A SMALL NUMBER PRINTED ON LARGE PAPER, is completely revised and enlarged, and bares very little resemblance to the book published by Duhamel with the same title in two volumes in 1755. The magnificent color plates, the majority of them after Redoute, and many after Bessa are new to this edition. Pierre-Joseph Redoute (1759-1840), often called "the Raphael of flowers," was born in the Belgian Ardennes - the son, grandson, great-grandson and brother of artists. From the beginning, Redoute's talents were recognized by distinguished men and women who took pleasure in forwarding his career. For the study of botany, his teacher was Heritier de Brutelle, one of the outstanding naturalists of his day. Gerard van Spaendonck, Flower Painter to the King, taught Redoute the technique of painting in watercolor on vellum. But by the master's own account, the pupil's work was finer. The luminosity of stipple engraving is particularly suited to the reproduction of botanical detail. It is essentially a technique of engraving a copper plate with a dense grid of dots which can be modulated to convey delicate gradations of color. Because the ink lies on the paper in miniscule dots, it does not obscure the "light" of the white paper beneath the color. After this complicated printing process was complete, the prints were then finished by hand in watercolor, so as to conform to the models Redoute provided. Redoute had, as pupils or patrons, five queens and empresses of France, from Marie Antoinette to Josephine's successor, the Empress Marie-Louise. Despite many changes of regime in this turbulent epoch, he worked without interruption, eventually contributing to over fifty books on natural history and archaeology. Du Hamel (later de-nobilized to Duhamel) du Monceau was born to a farming family in Paris. By 21 he was studying at the Jardin du Roi, which later became the Jardin des Plantes, where he became friends with Bernard de Jussieu (1699 –1777?), who recommended him to the Académie des Sciences. He published a number of scientific works on fruit trees and other plants: "Recherches sur les causes de la multiplication des espèces des fruit", "Anatomie de la Poire" (1730-1731), and "Traité des Arbres Fruitiers" (1768). From 1755, Duhamel began publication of the eight-volume work "Traité complet des Bois et des Fôrets" that would attempt to detail "all aspects of trees including their planting, growth, maintenance, and transportation. The first installation started with two volumes titled "Traité des Arbres et Arbustes" (1755). Other titles that were included in the comprehensive work were "La Physique des Arbres" (1758), "De l’Exploitation des Bois" (1764), and finally "Du Transport" (1767). Between the years 1752 and 1777, he authored various works that appeared both in Diderot’s "Encyclopédie" and the "Dictionnaire des Arts et Metiers". Bret Payne for Oak Spring Garden Library online.
