ARCHIVE Of LETTERS & DOCUMENTS. Juniata County, Pennsylvania. 1819 - 1854

1819 - 1854.. Divers dimensions. 89 pieces.. Overall, a VG collection.. 66 handwritten letters and 23 handwritten documents, 6 x 3 in. to 8 x 14 in. (w x h), to and from Adam H. Atkinson of Mexico & Thompsontown, Juniata County, Pennsylvania. The letters and documents are primarily concerned with parcels of land in Pennsylvania, Ohio & Indiana which Atkinson has either recently purchased or was attempting to purchase. Many of the letters were folded to form their own mailer, as was standard practice during this era, and are complete with a postal stamp, often the amount of postage and evidence of a wax seal having been used. Adam H. Atkinson was born in approximately 1818 in Pennsylvania. He was from a well-established family in Thompsontown, Walker Township, Juniata County, Pennsylvania. Adam's grandfather, Matthew Atkinson took out, on order of survey No. 4606, November 24, 1767, two hundred and eighty-six acres of land in what was to become Walker Township, Pennsylvania. On May 1, 1813, Matthew Atkinson also took out a warrant for one hundred acres of land in Wayne Township, where he owned additional land as well. On June 29, 1813, he sold one hundred acres to Adam's father, Lukens Atkinson (born in approximately 1784/5), who moved to Wayne Township, Mifflin County to live and eventually die in what became known as Atkinson's Mills. Adam purchased part of the Abraham Lukens tract on April 1, 1842, and by the time of the 1850 census, we find him listed as a farmer, with the value of his land listed at $7,000.00. In this same census, Lukens Atkinson's land is valued at $12,000.00. As is evidenced by the letters and documents in this collection, Adam H. Atkinson was also a land speculator. In 1860, Adam is listed as owning one male slave, aged 23. Adam assisted several families to relocate from Pennsylvania to Ohio, Illinois and Indiana. Some friends of the family even went as far west as the gold fields of California. The letter of Jonathan Lukens (1851) sings the praises of Illinois and tells Adam he is ?'well pleased with this country?". While most of the correspondence and documents are related to the business of land sales and purchases, rentals and quit claims, there are other documents including bills of sale for Adam and his wife Mary (daughter of Louis Evans and Amelia Groathouse of Delaware Township) in which she has purchased cloth and other household items. Also present are several letters from family members, including his brothers Caleb North Atkinson and J. Atkinson. The six lengthy letters from Lydia E[vans?] Davis of Kirkersville, Ohio, are full of family news and business. From research done, we fully believe that Lydia is a relative of A. H. Atkinson through his wife's family. One very touching letter is that from Adam's son Louis E. Atkinson, aged twelve, written to his mother, Mary, from Airy View Academy in 1853 in which he reports that he is doing well in grammar, arithmetic, geography and other subjects. Louis E. Atkinson (April 16, 1841-February 5, 1910) studied medicine and graduated from the medical department of the College of the City of New York on March 4, 1861. He entered the medical department of the United States Army on September 5, 1861, and served as assistant surgeon in the First Pennsylvania Reserve Cavalry and as surgeon of the One Hundred and Eighty-eight Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry until he mustered out in December 1865. Having been disabled during the war, he did not return to practice medicine but studied law and was admitted to the bar in September 1870. He was elected as a Republican to the House of Representatives in 1883 and served in that capacity until 1893. Taken together, the letters and documents offer the reader fascinating look into life in mid-century Juniata County Pennsylvania, and the movement west of family and friends of Adam H. Atkinson. A detailed inventory of the archive supplied on request.

Nouveau Système de Minéralogie. Traduit du Suédois.

Paris, Méquignon-Marvis, 1819. 8vo (202 x 127 mm). pp. (4), vi, 314, (1). Recent marbled boards, red gilt lettered label on spine. First published in Swedish in 1814. First French edition, of this famous mineralogical classic. 'In 1812 he received a gift of a large number of minerals which he later decided to classify. The methods of mineral classification existing at the time were based on appearance and physical properties. These seemed highly unsystematic to Berzelius. He concluded from his analytical experience that a logical classification could be based only on chemical composition. In his original system, first published in 1814, he arranged the minerals in terms of their basic constituents, although he later revised this and placed chief emphasis on the acid component. Like many of Berzelius' innovations, his system of mineral classification was at first received with some hostility, but this was gradually overcome. During his visit to Paris in 1818 he won the approval of Haüy, the leading mineralogist of the day, whose own system was based on physical properties' (DSB).//Ward & Carozzi 202; Hoover 123.

"Travels in England, France, Spain, and the Barbary States in the years 1813-14 and 15."

New York: Kirk and Mercein; London: John Miller. 1819. Early ownership signature of ""Richard L. Schieffelin, New York, 1819."" Noah (1785-1851) was a lawyer, playwright, and journalist. He was born in Philadelphia of Portuguese-Jewish ancestry. ""In 1813 [he] was appointed consul to Tunis, with a special mission to Algers. He was instructed to negotiate for the release of some Americans held as prisoners by the Algerine pirates. On May 23, 1813, he sailed from Charleston, but his vessel being captured by the British, he was taken to England and detained two months. In October he arrived in Cadiz, where he contracted with Richard R. Keene, an American who had become a Spanish subject, to affect the release of the twelve Americans ... After being detained in France and Spain for more than a year, Noah finally arrived in Tunis. On July 30, 1815, he received a letter from James Monroe, secretary of state, revoking his commission and hinting at irregularities in his accounts. Monroe's treatment of Noah was never satisfactorily explained, though his association with Keene, who had been accused of treason, was doubtless detrimental ... In January 1817, however, Noah received a letter from the Department o State which vindicated his conduct and returned several thousand dollars due him in the enterprise which resulted in the release of the American captives"" (DAB).       Lincoln: Drury and Son, 1819. Printed bill, 435 x 170 mm., foxed and creased, on very thin paper, remnant of binder's stub on left margin; very good. Sentenced to 14 years for forgery. A rare and very fragile bill for City of Lincoln, printing the results of the Lent Assizes held on 6 March 1819 before Sir Robert Dallas and Sir James Burrough. Five of the convicts were sentence to transportation, two for the very serious crime of forgery. The bill reports 30 sentences, including the five convicts sentenced to transportation, many of whom for what now seem very modest crimes. Given seven years were: William Houghton, 29, labourer, for stealing a leg of mutton; James Robinson (alias James Platt), 26, for burgling the house of Robert Wright of Nocton; and William Holland, 29, labourer, who killed a ewe and stole the hindquarters, the property of Thomas Doncaster. The full 14 years were given to two forgers, John Lake (29) and Thomas Wade (21). John Lake and Thomas Wade were both certainly sent out on the Malabar in mid-1819.An interesting addition at the foot of the bill relates to the case of William Raines (alias William Clarke, William Rhodes), 24, sentenced to death for 'being at large before the time for which he had been transported.'.

Kunst und Natur; Blätter aus meinem Reisetagebuch. 3 Bände. Mit 3 gestoch. Titeln und 3 gestoch. Porträts von Klingemann, seiner Frau und P. A. Wolf. Farbige, illustr. Orig.-Broschuren (Kanten berieben, leichte Gebrauchsspuren).

Braunschweig, Meyer, 1819-1828.. . Egypte.

Imprimerie Royale, Paris 1819 - [Paris]: [Imprimerie Royale], 1819. Uncoloured aquatint, printed image ca. 46 x 53,5 cm (18.5 x 21.5 inches). Engraved by M. Debucourt. Aquatint slightly waved, descriptive text closely trimmed, otherwise a very good aquatint. Plate 62 from the Atlas to Forbin's "Voyage dans Le Levant en 1817 et 1818" (Paris, 1819; two editions were published the same year, our plate is from one of them). This was "one of the first important French books to use lithography on a grand scale, with the scarce first edition, of which Brunet states that only 325 copies were printed. Most of the plates, after Lecomte, Deseynes, Castellan, Carle and Horace Vernet, Fragonard, Thienon, Legros, Isabey and others, illustrate views in Egypt and Syria, including the famous view of Drovetti, French consul in Egypt, measuring a giant head" (PBA Galleries). "In 1816 Forbin replaced Denon as Director of Museums, and in August 1817 he undertook a semi-official year-long voyage to the Levant, having been authorized to purchase antiquities for the Louvre. He travelled to Milos, where his son-in-law Marcellus had negotiated the purchase of the recently discovered Venus de Milo, and from there to Athens, Constantinople, Asia Minor, Syria and Palestine, from Jaffa he travelled overland to Alexandria and visited Egypt" (Blackmer 614).

Pierre André Latreille (1762-1833) was a famous French entomologist and professor at the Muséum d'Histoire Naturelle in Paris. Along other lines in the 1820's he advanced theoretical views displaying sympathie with the concept of the unity of plan in the animal kingdom" (DSB VIII, p. 49).
