Tour of the Grand Junction, illustrated in a series of engravings; with an historical and topographical description of those parts of the counties of Middlesex, Hertfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Bedfordshire, and Northamptonshire, through which the canal passes.

London: printed for J. Hassell, 27, Richard-Street, Islington. 1819. 8vo., with 24 fine fully hand-coloured aquatint plates, each with its original tissue guard, viii + 147 + (5)pp., in spite of the tissue guard, a little offsetting of frontispiece on title-page, contemporary calf panelled in gilt and blind, flat spine with gilt lettering piece, marbled edges, the binding generally somewhat worn, nonetheless still sound. A good copy with fine impressions of the coloured plates. First edition. Abbey, Scenery,> 30. Tooley 252. Goldsmiths 22530.2. Williams I, p.93. The plates are really rather fine, 18 of them showing views in which the canal features, often with locks or bridges. The Grand Junction Canal ran from Braunston in Northamptonshire to the River Thames at Brentford, with a number of branches. The main canal was constructed between 1793 and 1805 and was designed to improve the route from the Midlands to London, by-passing the upper reaches of the River Thames near Oxford, thus shortening the journey. By about 1810 the canal had reduced the distance to London from the Midlands by 60 miles and had made the journey reliable. As a result, it thrived: in 1810 it carried 343,560 tons of goods through London, with roughly equal amounts into and out of the capital.

Compilation of 8 middle-period string quartets in first edition. [Parts].

[Op. 30] Xtes Quartett für 2 Violinen, Viola und Violoncello... 30tes Werk. Preis ["f. 3" in pencil, erased]. [Parts]. Wien: S.A. Steiner und Comp. [PN S:u:C: 3017], [?after 1819]. Violino primo: [1] (title), 2-13, [i] (blank) pp.; Violino secondo: [1] (blank), 2-9, [i] (blank) pp.; Viola: [1] (blank), 2-9, [i] (blank) pp.; Violoncello: [1] (blank), 2-9, [i] (blank) pp. Engraved. First Edition, issue unclear. WorldCat (5 copies in North America, at the University of Victoria, the Eastman School of Music, Harvard, Indiana, and the Free Library of Philadelphia. According to Weinmann: Senefelder-Steiner-Haslinger 1, p. 167, the first issue (November 1819) has a printed price of "2 fl. 30 x" to the title. Göthel, p. 51, reverses the chronology: "The price was omitted [from the first issue] and re-engraved in a later issue as '2 fl. 30x'." Since the (erased) manuscript price to the present copy exceeds the printed price, Weinmann's hypothesis of a later deletion of the printed price seems more likely. Copies with a printed price other than "2 fl. 30 x." have not been located. Op. 30, in A major, is now counted as Spohr's 8th string quartet (see MGG2). The confusing numbering results from the fact that two of the three op. 29 quartets are actually later than op. 30. [Op. 43] Quatuor brillant [in E major] pour deux Violons, Alto et Violoncelle... Spohr's 16th, 17th, and 18th quartets, in E-flat major, A minor, and G major respectively. Folio. Early brown marbled boards with cut paper labels to upper with titling "No. 15" and part name in manuscript; contents and name "A. Forsboom" to label of Violino Primo part. Binding rubbed and slightly worn. Some minor dampstaining; occasional stains, soiling, and other minor defects. Quite good copies overall. . The Forsboom family was a dynasty of merchants in Frankfurt. "A. Forsboom" most probably refers to Anton Forsboom-Goldner (1794-1839), who was also a politician, noted for his interest in the arts. "The largest portion of Spohr's chamber music was for strings alone, ranging from 19 unsurpassed duos for two violins to four masterly, and largely unemulated, double string quartets. These, together with the 36 string quartets (and several other works for the same combination), seven string quintets and the String Sextet of 1848, display a number of common features. Spohr's own mastery of the violin is evident in all of them, and their technical difficulties, together with the particular style of performance necessary to secure their full effect, may partly explain their infrequent performance. The quartets, especially, fall into two distinct categories: solo quartets in the tradition of Rode (often entitled Quatuor brillant), which are essentially violin concertos with string trio accompaniment, and true quartets where the interest is more evenly divided between the instruments."         THE NORTH AMERICAN SYLVA, OR A DESCRIPTION OF FOREST TREES, OF THE UNITED STATES, CANADA, AND NOVA SCOTIA

Paris, 1819. Early 19th-century three-quarter calf and marbled boards. Slight chipping at toe of spine of first volume. Front hinge of second volume tender, top portion of spine separating. Light scattered foxing on text leaves only, plates fine. Inscriptions dated 1837 to Lieut. James Glynn, U.S. Navy, in each volume. Ex-library, bookplate of the Horticultural Society of New York noting Kenneth K. Mackenzie's bequest of the book. A good set. An early reissue of the first edition of Michaux. The primary difference between the first issue and the present set is that the pagination herein is in two volumes instead of the original three, and some of the plate numbers have been corrected. The same beautiful color plates printed in Paris, many after Redouté, are present here as in the first issue. This publication is the most important work relating to American trees prior to the 20th century. It is the product of the efforts of one of the greatest naturalists to work in 19th century America, François A. Michaux. The beautifully executed plates illustrate leaves and nuts or berries of American trees across the entire continent. Thomas Nuttall later continued the work begun by Michaux, and of the combined work of both men Sabin states: "It is no exaggeration to remark that it is the most complete work of its kind, and is a production of unrivalled interest and beauty." Michaux's work is based on his extensive travels in the eastern half of America, and those of his father, from the 1790s on. Both men were friendly with Jefferson and other leading figures, who aided them in their work and travels. This edition was printed in Paris, where the plates were engraved as well. Both volumes contain the Paris imprint of D'Hautel. The plates were executed by the great French flower painter, Redouté, and his associate, Bessa. The sheets of the first effort at reprinting the work were destroyed by fire, but the copper plates were separately stored and thus survived to be employed in a later combined edition issued by Rice and Hart of Philadelphia. A nice set of this classic of American natural history.

Colored etching from UINSER VERKEHR] [Anti Semitic print]

1819 - Hand-colored etching from 1819 c.e. of a scene from Karl Borromäus Alexander Sessa's anti Semitic play "Unser Verkehr" (The Company We Keep). Etching by Johann Michael Voltz. Caption in German: As du gaihst und kannst nicht wieder neun un neunzimool schwerer will ich dir speien ins Angesicht! Gaih! Gaih! - Loss dich tretten von de Leit, loss dich warfen aus de Stuben, loss dich verklagen bey de Gerichte, loss dich setzen ins Hundeloch, loss dich binden mit Strick und Ketten, loss dich martern halb taud! Aber du musst doch werden raich! Rough translation: As you go and are unable to go any further, do not come back because I will spit in your face nine and nine harder. Go! Go! Let yourself be stepped on by people, let yourself be thrown out of rooms, let yourself be denounced to the courts, let yourself be pushed into kennels, let yourself be bound with cords and chains, let yourself be martyred half to death! But you must become rich!" 1906 Jewish Encyclopedia: SESSA, KARL BORROMÄUS ALEXANDER: By: Gotthard Deutsch. Anti-Jewish author; born at Breslau Dec. 20, 1786; died there Dec. 4, 1813. He studied philosophy and medicine in various universities, graduated as doctor of medicine in Frankfort-on-the-Oder (1807), and was district physician in his native city. Besides essays on medicine and various poems and plays he wrote a comedy entitled "Die Judenschule," which presents Jewish characters in the most vulgar way, all of them being actuated by the lowest mercenary motives and speaking a repulsive jargon or a ridiculously stilted German. The play was first presented in Breslau Feb. 11, 1813; then, under the title "Unser Verkehr," in Berlin and elsewhere, until the police prohibited its repetition. It was published anonymously in Breslau in 1815, and often reprinted, even in Reclam's "Universalbibliothek." Treitschke ("Deutsche Geschichte," iii. 756, Leipsic, 1885) says that some thought Goethe had written the work, and that the house of Rothschild offered a prize for the discovery of the author. According to Treitschke, the author was Karl Andreas Mertens, a Protestant minister at Halberstadt. Both of these statements of Treitschke are unfounded. Bibliography: Grätz, Gesch. xi. 338 et seq.; Ludwig Geiger, Ueber den Verfasser der Posse: Unser Verkehr, in Allg. Zeit. des Jud. 1903, pp. 78 et seq. Johann Michael Voltz (October 16, 1784 in Nördlingen ¿ 17 April 1858 in Nördlingen) was a German painter, graphic artist and political cartoonist. Voltz's father was a schoolteacher. Voltz studied with the engraver and art dealer Friedrich Weber in Augsburg. His drawings and graphic prints brought him to the attention of the court painter Schmidt. After completing his education he was employed by the academic bookstore Herzberg in Augsburg, where he created popular prints. After staying at Munich in 1808, Voltz joined in 1809 the business of picture book publisher Friedrich Campe in Nuremberg, for which he worked until his death. In total, Voltz 'oeuvre includes about 5000 drawings and etchings, which he created for Campe and other art publishers (Augsburg: F. Ebner, Herzberg, Jenisch & Stage, trolleys, William, Zauna; Nuremberg: Abel-Klinger, Raspe, Renner, Schrag, etc.). Voltz focused on illustrations of battles and other historical events. He depicted events of his own time - the Napoleonic Wars since 1805, the German War of Liberation against Napoleon, and later the Greek War of Independence, as well as from earlier history such as "Luther at the Diet of Worms". In 1828 he made a series of drawings on Children's games. Voltz was also known as a prominent German political cartoonists of the early 19th Century. His cartoons, directed against Napoleon Bonaparte, are still reproduced in present-day history books. His depiction of the 1819 antisemitic Hep-Hep riots in Frankfurt is often reproduced in articles and books about these riots and about antisemitism in general. Voltz was the father of animal and landscape painter Friedrich Voltz

A VOYAGE OF DISCOVERY, MADE UNDER THE ORDERS OF THE ADMIRALTY, IN HIS MAJESTY'S SHIPS ISABELLA AND ALEXANDER, FOR THE PURPOSE OF EXPLORING BAFFIN'S BAY, AND INQUIRING INTO THE PROBABILITY OF A NORTH-WEST PASSAGE.

London: John Murray, 1819.. [4],xxxix,[1],252,[2],cxliv pp. plus three folding maps, ten folding plates (four colored), nineteen single-page plates (eleven colored), and errata slip. Quarto. Contemporary marbled boards, neatly rebacked in calf, leather label. Endpapers renewed. Some offsetting from plates. Very good. One of the pioneering voyages of high Arctic discovery. Led by Sir John Ross, the officers included future Arctic greats William Parry, James Clark Ross, and Edward Sabine. Ross sailed up Davis Strait and westward into Lancaster Sound, seeking a northwest passage. A mirage deceived him into believing the end of the Sound was blocked by a high range of mountains, despite the disbelief of his colleagues. The expedition returned to England in 1818 with much fanfare and Ross was promoted, but the false conclusions were widely challenged when this account was published, and involved Ross in lifelong controversy. Aside from its incorrect geographical conclusions, however, the expedition bore important fruits in encouraging Arctic exploration, training future leaders, and compiling accurate geographical and ethnological data. This copy is particularly notable for the beautiful extensive contemporary coloring of the plates. One of the most remarkable plates in the book shows the encounter of Ross and his officers- decked out in full Royal Navy dress uniform- encountering the Eskimos in Lancaster Sound. The image was created by John Stackhouse, who was serving as the native interpreter for the expedition. ARCTIC BIBLIOGRAPHY 14873. HILL 1488. TPL 1152. ABBEY 634. SABIN 73376. LANDE 1425.

        The Penn Family

London, 1819. Mezzotint over an engraved and etched base, by Turner after Reynolds. Sheet size: 24 9/16 x 17 inches. In good condition. Trimmed to edge of plate mark, small expertly repaired tears at sheet edges. A charming image, from the golden age of the British mezzotint, of the grand-children of William Penn, the founder and first proprietor of the colony of Pennsylvania This fine group portrait shows the children of Thomas Penn (1702-1775) and his wife Lady Juliana, daughter of Thomas Fermor, the first Earl of Pomfret. The print is dedicated by Turner in 1819 to John Penn, who is included in the portrait as a young child: "This print of the Penn Family is with Permission dedicated to John Penn Esqr,. By his obliged & humble Servt. C. Turner". Just beneath the image are the names and dates of the four subjects: two of whom, John's mother and older sister, had died by the time the print was issued, thus making it a touching memorial, and an emblem of family life as seen from childhood in general. Sir Joshua Reynolds executed the original portrait in the early 1760s when he was at the height of his considerable powers as a Society portrait painter. Charles Turner was an excellent engraver who throughout his memorable career produced an array of wonderful images. Born in Oxfordshire, Turner moved to London in 1795, at which time he was employed by the famous engraver and publisher Boydell. Turner was a versatile engraver working in stipple and aquatint as well as mezzotint. Although, Turner produced a wide array of excellent prints on subjects ranging from topography to genre, his main artistic focus was portraiture. Throughout his career he produced more than six hundred plates, of which about two-thirds were portraits. Turner was a close friend of JMW Turner, and engraved many of the artists' paintings, in addition to engraving some of the plates for 'Liber Studiorum'. As an engraver he combined technical skill with artistic imagination to create beautiful enduring images.         Vue de la grande Arcade de l'aqueduc de Baktché-Kieuï, et du vallon de Buyuk-Dèrè

Paris: P. Didot l'ainé, 1819. Etching with engraving by Schroeder after Melling. Neat repairs to splits to old vertical fold. A fine view of the archway of the Baktché-Kieuï aqueduct and the valley of Buyuk-Dèrè, outside of Constantinople, from Melling's grand work 'Voyage Pittoresque de Constantinople et des rives du Bosphore'. Born in Lorraine in 1763, Antoine Ignace Melling, artist and voyager, was trained in architecture and painting. At the age of 19, he went to Constantinople as part of the Russian Ambassador's retinue. After successfully completing several commissions for Hatice Sultan, the sister of Selim III, which included the renovation of her palace at Ortakeï, Melling was employed as the Sultan's architect in 1795. His position as royal architect gave him a privileged opportunity to observe the Ottoman court, and during his eighteen years there, he made many detailed drawings of the sultan's palaces, Ottoman society, and Constantinople and its environs. Within a year of returning to Paris in 1803, Melling published a prospectus for the Voyage pittoresque , the first thirteen livraisons of which were published in 1809. He completed the engravings for this work in 1819. Cf. Atabey 798; cf. Blackmer 1105; cf. Brunet III, 1591; cf. Lipperheide 1431.

Picturesque Representations of the Dress and Manner of the English. Illustrated in fifty coloured engravings, with descriptions

London: printed for John Murray by W. Bulmer & Co, 1819. Quarto. (9 3/8 x 6 3/8 inches). 50 hand-coloured aquatint plates by William Alexander. Expertly bound to style in half black straight-grained morocco over marbled paper-covered boards, the flat spine divided into six compartments by double gilt fillets, lettered in gilt in the second compartment Provenance: E. Burgoyne (early signature) A fine copy of this fascinating work. This extraordinary work covers a huge range of social types from 'The Sovereign' to a chimney sweep, a judge to the licensed man that watered and fed the horses pulling the hackney carriages. The images and related text on the lower classes in general and the street vendors in particular are probably the most interesting. They picture and describe people who do not appear in conventional histories of the period, and offer a window into real life on the streets at the beginning of the 19th century. Colas notes that the plates are engraved from earlier images by William Henry Pyne, presumably those published in his The Costume of Great Britain (London: 1804, 60 plates). Pyne's work was evidently a major source for this work, as a comparison of the titles to the plates shows, but there are also a significant number of military subjects that are not in Pyne's work, suggesting a variety of sources. The plates have been executed with a refreshing liveliness and freedom that is not usually seen in books of this type, but which is typical of William Alexander's etched and engraved work.         Tiresias Was bred by His Grace the Duke of Portland in 1816 was got by Soothsayer out of Sledge... At Epsom he won the Derby Stakes beating 15 others among whom were Sultan, Euphrates, The Dominic, &c

London: R. Pollard & Sons, 1819. Coloured aquatint. Framed in a lovely birds-eye maple frame with gold slip. Mounted in fine washline mount. In excellent condition with the exception of a minor scuff in the upper left corner of image. A fine portrait of the winner of the 1819 Epsom Derby, engraved by James Pollard from his own original drawing. Tiresias is shown just before a race: his groom administers a last minute tonic (!) while his jockey (W. Clift) takes off an overcoat in preparation to mount, and his trainer looks on proudly. In the background can be seen the grand-stand of the race course (possibly Epsom). James Pollard was the youngest son of the London engraver and print-seller Robert Pollard. He began work at the age of fifteen as a painter but quickly turned to engraving as well. In the 1820s his coaching scenes became both fashionable and lucrative. "A stream of coaching paintings followed, many of which he engraved himself. From 1821, he exhibited a small number of pictures at the Royal Academy and the British Institution, which brought him more patrons. Between 1830 and 1840, Pollard also painted a number of racing pictures and some of the earliest scenes of steeple chasing on purpose-made courses, many recording the prowess of the few professional and more amateur riders of the day...[In all his work Pollard took great pains over accuracy, this is particularly true of his large scale works and] it is Pollard's large racing scenes which really take off and into which one can gaze and discover a microcosm of the turf" (Charles Lane, British Racing Prints, p.146). Lane, British Racing Prints, p.146; cf. Selway, James Pollard 1792-1867, p.47 (variant title); Siltzer p. 214.

[Vue du grand Bend, dans la forêt de Belgrade]

Paris: P. Didot l'ainé, 1819. Etching with engraving by the Pillement sons and Née after Melling with later professional hand-coluring. Proof before title. Very good condition. A fine view of an aqueduct in the Belgrade Forest of Constantinople, from Melling's grand work 'Voyage Pittoresque de Constantinople et des rives du Bosphore'. Within a year of returning to Paris in 1803, Melling published a prospectus for the 'Voyage pittoresque', the first thirteen livraisons of which were published in 1809. He completed the engravings for this work in 1819. Cf. Atabey 798; cf. Blackmer 1105; cf. Brunet III, 1591; cf. Lipperheide 1431.

THE STATUTE LAW OF KENTUCKY; WITH NOTES, PRAELECTIONS, AND OBSERVATIONS ON THE PUBLIC ACTS. IN FIVE VOLUMES

Frankfort, 1819. Thick octavos. 20th-century tan cloth, gilt leather labels. Light soiling and wear to bindings, paper labels at foot of spines. Library ink stamp on each titlepage. Light foxing and soiling to text. Lightly tanned. In second volume pp.545 and 547 repaired with tape. A good, solid set. A rare set of the Kentucky statutes compiled by noted Kentucky legal historian William Littell. Littell (1768- 1824) moved to Kentucky in 1801, where he received a law degree and began writing about legal history for the state. The present statutes, published over a period of ten years, were originally intended to be just three volumes (as evidenced by the titlepages) but were later expanded to five. The Shaw & Shoemaker bibliography entry covers the five volumes as one work, though they are cited individually by McMurtrie. These are relatively early for Kentucky printing, which began in Lexington in 1787. Incredibly rare in the marketplace, especially complete in five volumes. The only other complete set we can locate at auction is in the Brinley sale in 1880.

This is probably the most important American case concerning the contract right of corporations. The New Hampshire legislature passed a bill in 1816 that revoked Dartmouth College's original charter and converted the college from a private to a state institution. The college challenged the constitutionality of this act in the state Supreme Court without success, but the U.S. Supreme Court reversed the state's decision in a landmark opinion based on the contract clause of the Constitution. This decision represented "an assurance for all investors in American corporate enterprises that the terms upon which they had committed their capital could not be unilaterally altered by a state. At a time when corporations were first being widely used, it thus encouraged the expansion of American business enterprise. The decision vested the Corporation with indestructible contract rights. even against its creator" (Schwartz, 86, 111). "By construing the contract clause as a means of protecting corporate charters from state interventions, Marshall derived a significant limitation on state authority. As a result, various forms of private economic and social activity would enjoy security from state regulatory policy. Marshall thus encouraged, through constitutional sanction, the emergence of the relatively unregulated private, autonomous economic actor as the major participant in a liberal political economy that ser

[1819] Rafael D. Mérida (1762?-1828) began his career as a bureaucrat in Caracas, participated in the early patriot movement, served as minister of Justice under Bolívar in 1813?-14, but turned against the Liberator in 1816. In his Representación, Mérida recapitulates Bolívar's errors, military and political, in a finely honed philippic. He is no less kind to Miranda, whom he nearly accuses of treason. Palau states that this piece was actually printed in the U.S., and the paper on which it is printed would certainly substantiate that claim, as does the fact that it is held by the Library Company of Philadelphia, famous for its collection of Spanish-language books printed in Philadelphia with false imprint information. An extremely rare piece of Bolívariana. => This copy belonged to one of Mérida's family. Original wrappers, one chip; stains on rear wrapper and soil to front one. Once upon a time, folded as to fit in a pocket. Very good condition.
