N. Wiliam Waxall
ont> T Cadell and W. Davies : London, 1818 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition.. Three volumes of Nathaniel William Wraxall's memoirs of life in the late eighteenth century. The third edition of this work. This corrected edition was published in 1818, after Wraxall had suspended the sale of his memoirs (originally published in 1816), after being sent to prison for libel from the first edition of this work. He revised and edited this edition to avoid a similar error. Nathaniel William Wraxall was acquainted with various Danish nobles, who persuaded him to persuade the English King to act kindly on behalf of his sister, Queen Caroline, who had been deposed. His experiences are mentioned in his memoir, as well as describing is curious presentation at the court of Portugal. After travelling around Europe, Wraxall returned in England in the 1780s and entering Parliament for the Tories. He was made a baronet in 1813, and also published various works on histravels, such as 'A Tour Round the Baltic', and 'Memoirs of the Kings of France of the Race of Valois'. When he died he left a work of the history of France unfinished. With a portrait of Wraxall to the frontispiece of Volume I. Volume I contains 1772 to 1780, Volume II contains January 1781 to March 1782, and Volume II contains March 1782 to March 1784. Condition: Rebacked with the original calf boards and spine laid on. Externally, generally smart. Several marks to boards, heavier to the front boards of Volumes I and III. Hinges of Volume I are starting but firm. PHARMACEUTICAL ADVERTISING
1818. Japan: various sizes and various dates, mostly printed in black, some in red, ranging from 1818 to 1906. A remarkable collection of pharmaceutical ephemera: these broadsides and envelopes were issued by pharmaceutical companies from all over Japan, for advertising and dispensing a wide variety of tablets, ointments, powders, plasters, herbal medicines, and pastes. These medicines were used for a wide variety of illnesses: indigestion, conjunctivitis, kidney disease, sea sickness, diarrhea, etc. Indeed, one of the medicines is advertised as efficacious in curing 10,000 diseases. Some of these broadsides lists many kinds of medicines produced and marketed by a single manufacturer. Many have company logos. Each broadside and envelope lists the manufacturer's name and place, the name of the medicine, sometimes the price, and the diseases it could cure. The large chart, printed on both sides, lists more than 500 foods, including grains, vegetables, meat, fish, and fruits, organized in Japanese alphabetical order. Below each item is a recommendation regarding who should consume this food (for instance, some are good for old people but not the young, etc.), and food combinations that are beneficial or dangerous. Many of these medicines still exist. For example, "Uzu no Kyumei gan" was first produced in 1597 for pediatric illnesses and is still dispensed today. Mostly in fine condition.

ISABEY, Jean-Baptiste
1818. Original painting for the lithograph that appeared in the book of Caricatures published in Paris 1818. Watercolour on, paper 15 x 13 cm. (Illustrated also the published version). Signed and dated lower right. “These twelve pseudonymous designs were the pastimes of Jean-Baptiste Isabey, a miniature painter of repute, who was the father of Eugène Isabey. Of great verve and spirit in themselves, their grotesque figures, tall or short, fat or thin, provide a link with English caricature of the previous quarter of a century, particularly the work of Thomas Rowlandson. Isabey’s situations are as gross and indelicate as his people. Indeed, This album foreshadows what was to be the prevailing style among caricaturists of manners in the early 1820s (Ray, The Art of the French Illustrated Book).

LAMB. CHARLES.
FIRST EDITION of this, the first collected edition of Lamb's works. Two volumes. Small 8vo. (6.8 x 4.2 inches). Presentation copy from the Author, with his three line inscription in ink to the front blank free endpaper of volume one; "J. J. Morgan Esq. with C Lamb's kindest respects." ----- John James Morgan (d. 1820) was a Bristol businessman and a classmate of Robert Southey. Samuel Taylor Coleridge lived with the Morgan's family in Hammersmith, London, from 1810-16. Morgan lost his fortune in later life and retired back to the West country, in Calne, Wiltshire. This edition features a five page dedication to Coleridge from Lamb. Aside from some foxing, mostly to the endpapers, this is a very good copy bound, without half titles or publishers advert leaf, in attractive late nineteenth century bindings by Morell, of half dark green crushed morocco. Spine with raised bands. Compartments lettered in gilt and ruled in blind. Marbled paper on boards. Marbled endpapers. All edges gilt. A lovely copy in a fine late nineteenth century leather binding with the bonus of a nice inscription from Lamb.

Volume II: Folding map at frontispiece a little browned, browned outline of map on title page, vii + 359pp, appendix, Itinerary of the Route of the Embassy, index. Pencilled annotation one leaf, occasional light foxing and browning, spines a little sunned but generally very good. The second edition of the official account of Lord Amherst's abortive mission to negotiate terms with the Emperor of China. Far from being welcomed with the respect the embassy believed they were due, they were required to kowtow to the Emperor, something which Lord Amherst was not prepared to do. After negotiating to instead bow nine times (rather than touching their foreheads to the floor as the kowtow prescribed) the embassy were allowed to proceed to the palace. However tired from their long journey just as the embassy were retiring for the night they were commanded to appear before the Emperor. This further insult from Lord Amherst's point of view, to which he again refused, led to the embassy being ordered to leave immediately. After leaving China there was further trouble ahead as their ship, the Alceste was wrecked on a hidden reef in the Java Sea, 200 miles north of Java. The Embassy was sent to Batavia in the ship's boats, while the captain and crew occupied an island near … [Click Below for Full Description]

WELLS, William Charles
Printed for Archibald Constable and Co., London, 1818. [2], lxxiv, [2], 439pp, [1]. With a half-title. Recent green morocco-backed marbled paper boards, gilt. Very slight rubbing to extremities. Twentieth-century inked ownership inscription to FEP, slight loss to lower corner of leaf U3, later advertisement leaf of medical works sold by John Carfrae & Son bound to front. The first collected edition of two noteworthy essays by physician William Charles Wells (1757-1817). The first, 'Essay upon single vision with two eyes', initially published in 1792, presents an original theory on visible direction that would have profound influence upon contemporary spectacle makers. The second, 'Essay on Dew', first issued in 1814 and for which he received the Rumford medal of the Royal Society, was significant in the development of ventilation, particularly in regard to humidity and comfort in confined spaces such as on board sea-going vessels. Appended to these texts is the first printing of Wells' paper 'An account of a female of the white race of mankind, part of whose skin resembles that of a negro.' which contains what is arguably the earliest statement on the theory of natural selection, anticipating the later work of Darwin. Though wholly unknown to Darwin at the time of the first appearance of On the Origin of Species, the naturalist praised the foresight of Wells in the historical introduction to the third edition.
