John Evelyn / William Bray (Editor)
Printed by Nichols, Son, and Bentley, for Henry Colburn, and, 1818. Three Quarters Leather. First Edition. First Edition of the Diary of John Evelyn, which spanned his adult life from 1640 to his death in 1706. Covering such events as the English Civil War, and the Great Plague and Fire of London, this is a major primary source for English history in a time before the regular publication of newspapers or magazines. Though eventually overshadowed by Pepys' more scandalous diary, Evelyn's was published almost a decade prior, covers an earlier and longer time period, and his perspective as a civil servant, accomplished botanist, and founding member of The Royal Society lends much to his credit. Though this is the First Edition, published in 1818 as opposed to 1819, this has the eleven plates of the second edition. With eleven plates, two of which are folding, and one folding genealogical chart. The 'List of Plates, &c.' only call for 8 plates and one chart, further indicating that the text is the First Edition, merely with the additional plates that would appear in the second edition. Armorial bookplate on the front pastedown. Japanese tissue repair to the joints by a conservator. Three quarters mottled leather over marbled paper boards, with red and black leather labels. Housed in a bumped and worn brown cloth slipcase. Very Good. (NCBEL II, 1581). Very Good binding. [Attributes: First Edition]

Cramer, Zadok
Cramer & Spear. 10th Edition, 1818. 8vo, original half leather and marbled boards, 304 pp., with strip river maps and maps of Pittsburgh and the Falls of the Ohio. Good to very good copy, some dryness and rubbing to spine and corner leather, but joints and inner hinges sound, contents very good, brighter and less foxing than usually found, ownership signature of Harmon Pumpelly of Owego NY plus his name stamp. First blank has a chunk of paper missing from its lower corner, about a third of the entire page, otherwise, contents very good, unmarked. The original owner, Pumpelly (1795 - 1882) is described as follows in a historical website on Schenectady and region: 'He was an omniverous reader, and from every book he gleaned some useful knowledge, laying it by for future service. Among other accomplishments of a practical kind he gained a knowledge of surveying, and at the age of twenty-one was found in that occupation in connection with his brother James, who had charge of the extensive Harper and Caton estates in the vicinity of Tioga county, New York. His energy of character and spirit of enterprise soon led him beyond the routine of surveying. He threw into everything he did his habits of promptness, forethought and integrity, and almost everything he touched prospered. Much of his time in those years having been occupied as land agent for several large capitalists of New York City, he began the purchase and sale of lands on his own account, and thus laid the foundation of his large fortune. Together with his brothers he dealt in lumber and cattle, always displaying unusua … [Click Below for Full Description]

1818. Offering: A hand painted watercolor copybook album from the Edo period, believed to have been done prior to 1818. The actual size, watercolor funpon were done for study by an accomplished Maruyama school artist after a sketchbook by Maruyama Okyo with fifteen watercolor drawings, consisting of portraits and portraits with landscape, some after legend. The funpon album was carefully handled and stored, but viewed frequently by school students and artists. There are fifteen different hanko seals with old Chinese characters repeatedly stamped on cover sides and they may have recorded the funpon album's transmission. "If a student wished to use a copybook, he would request it from the pictorial model keeper. Accounts of loans were checked twice a month." [Sato, Modern Japanese Art, p. 285] The Maruyama Okyo watercolor drawings have a further history, as they were the first to be adapted posthumously for woodblock designs. The original Maruyama Okyo sketchbook, from which this funpon album of watercolor drawings was made, was one of two sketchbooks adapted by one of his most famous students, Yamaguchi Soken [1759-1818] who made transfer drawings for the woodblock print designs and wrote an afterword for volume two before his death in 1818. The two volumes were published together by Yoshida Shinbei in Kyoto as, "En'ō gafu" (Picture Album by Old Man Maruyama) in the early spring of Tenpō 8 (1837), 42 years after Maruyama Okyo's death. [Brown, Block Printing and Book Illustration in Japan, p. 96] The fifteen watercolors in the model book after Maruyama Okyo differ from the co … [Click Below for Full Description]

MAXWELL, Henry, 7th Baron Farnham (1799-1868)
Trinity College, Cambridge (ca 1818), Newton Barry, (dated 1822), Farnham House, County Cavan, Ireland (1823). 7 manuscript books, 8vo (various sizes), ink on paper, details below; all in original paper wrappers (marbled, mottled, or plain), one lower wrapper with some minor dampstaining, generally in fine condition, uncut.A fascinating collection of catalogues of minerals and meteorites, along with a few fossils, mostly relating to the family collections of minerals at their estates in County Cavan and Newtonbarry. The manuscripts reveal that Maxwell was well-read in geological and mineralogical literature, and some of the notes refer to quite early works, such as Gesner's De omni rerum fossilium genere, gemmis, lapidibus, metallis (1565-66). Maxwell is unknown in the annals of mineralogy, but it is possible that he shared his interests with his contemporary and neighbouring Irish peer William Willoughby Cole, third Earl of Inniskillen (1807-1886), geologist and palaeontologist. Cole amassed a world-famous fossil collection at his residence Florence Court, south-west of Enniskillen and in proximity to Farnham House, Maxwell's residence. Both Cole and Maxwell served in Parliament together, both were members of the Orange Order, of which Cole was master and also Grand Master of the Grand Orange Lodge.1. General Account 1818 (So titled on front cover), with Maxwell's signature to paste-down. The text is headed 'Constituent parts of Minerals' and lists various minerals and their composition. 21 numbered pages, 9 blanks.2. Toulouse: Bon exemplaire dans une reliure moderne. HUGO, Victor Académie des jeux floraux. 1818. 1819. 1820. 1821. Toulouse, M. J. Dalles, 1818. 1819. 1820. 1821. 1 vol. in-8. 12pp, XVIpp, 77pp ; Titre, LXXIIpp, 93pp, [4] pp ; 10pp, XXXIXpp, 53pp, [3]pp ; Faux-titre, titre, 8pp, LXXVIpp, 74PP, [2]pp. Spine and board edges rubbed, with a chip from the head of the spine; cheap paper somewhat foxed; a good, sound copy.. 12mo, contemporary calf spine, marbled boards, [12], 169, [11] pages. Per Brindle and Unger (as quoted in the Atwater catalog), this early Hohman collection of recipes (many medical, and preceding his ìpowwowî book, Der Lang Verborgene Freund, first published in Reading in 1820) was largely taken from Bartgisís Neuer Erfahrner Americanische Haus-und Stallarzt, published in Frederickstown in 1794óthough Hohman seems to have cut out some of the sympathetic magic. [CHARTER-HOUSE]
1818. [] ~ SHAKESPEARE AT CHARTERHOUSE [CHARTER-HOUSE] [Six volumes of school lists, each featuring Latin, Greek and English prize poetry] [Surrey?]. [vs.]. [1818-31], . 8vo. Six volumes; 1818-21 ([52]; 32; 32; 44pp). 1828 (41pp, 1), 1831 (35pp, [1]). The final two issues printed by Valpy of London, the others unsigned. Stitched, as issued, some with blue paper wrappers. Some loss, one volume without wrappers entirely. Some dog-earring, occasional marking. A rare survival of a six decidedly ephemeral senior-form and later full school-lists from the Surrey public school Charterhouse, each with several pieces of prize poetry included in Latin, Greek and English; some signed, others anonymous. One running theme in these collections of verse is Shakespeare - with either an English extract from the Bard opposite a Greek translation or a poem inspired by his works included in each. Notable Old Carthusians included amongst the school lists are a young John Murray (the third) (III Form, 1821) and William Makepeace Thackeray (I Form, 1828). ~ About Antiquates We're based in the heart of the Dorset countryside, with an antiquarian bookshop in Wareham, housed within a beautiful Grade II Listed Georgian Building, we also travel far and wide to buy, sell and advise on rare books.
