SHELLEY, Mary.] (CROKER, John Wilson, et al.)
London: John Murray, 1818. London: John Murray,, 1818. Octavo (209 x 125 mm). Contemporary black half calf with marbled sides, spine gilt in compartments with titles direct, marbled edges. A little light rubbing, small worm hole near foot of front joint, small patch of worming to lower fore-corner of first few leaves, some spotting within, very good condition overall. First edition of this notoriously scathing review of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, appearing in this volume of The Quarterly Review and penned by John Wilson Croker (1780-1857), a serial foe to all young Romantics and Jacobins, who only a few month later savaged, no less notoriously, Keats's Endymion, and would go on to do the same for a budding Tennyson. Excepting Percy Shelley's own review, which was written before the novel was published in January 1818, Croker's was the first review of Frankenstein written. The text of the review is well known, and is starkly representative of the conservative biases of the contemporary scene onto which Shelley's extraordinary novel had to force its way. Croker damned the novel as "a tissue of horrible and disgusting absurdity", and though it was anonymously published (Croker throughout assumes the author was a "he") he scorns it firmly along the party lines of the anti-Jacobin: "It is piously dedicated to Mr Godwin, and is written in the spirit of his school... Mr Godwin is the patriarch of a literary family, whose chief skill is in delineating the wanderings of the intellect, and which strangely delights in the most afflicting and humiliating of human miseries. His dis … [Click Below for Full Description]

Lord Byron
ont> John Murray: London. Ont> John Murray: London, 1818 A scarce variant of the first edition, second issue of Lord Byron's Canto IV from his lengthy poem, 'Childe Harold's Pilgrimage'. This copy is a scarce variant, with the dedication occupying pages iii-xiii. As stated by Wise (pp. 67) 'The text is identical with that of the published issues, but is compressed into a smaller compass. The sheet is an early, or proof, copy preserved by chance'. Wise believes that due to the demand of a second issue was so high that 'pending the delivery of the Third Issue of the printers, every available scrap that could be employed was made use of'. Wise had heard of three specimens of the work, two in the hands of American collectors and one in England. All are rebound. Matching all issue points for Wise's first edition second issue (pp. 61) including the new paragraph of seven lines to page 160, 'Esortazione' to the final line of page 155. As stated by Wise to page 64, 'The second and fifth issues have no advertisements sheets' (pp. 64). Therefore, this copy does not have advertisements. Childe Harold's Pilgrimage is one of Lord Byron's best known works. It was a narrative poem in four parts, which was published between 1812 and 1818. The poem describes the travels of a young man who seeks distraction in foreign lands, due to his own disillusion with life. The disillusioned sentiment echoes the contemporary feeling of a generation who were weary following the wars of the post-Revolutionary and Napoleonic eras. This is the fourth and final canto of the poem, which has been written in Sp … [Click Below for Full Description]

1818. We’re offering a deed of trust signed by two very prominent and early African Americans – former slave FREDERICK DOUGLASS (1818-1895) and the highly accomplished RICHARD T. GREENER (1844-1922). Greener has signed twice as Notary Public and Douglass has signed as Recorder of Deeds. Douglass was a slave who escaped and became a notable abolitionist, orator, writer and statesman. He was described by abolitionists as a living counter-example to slaveholders’ arguments that slaves lacked the intellectual capacity to function as independent American citizens. He wrote several autobiographies, which served to aid the cause of abolitionism. He also actively supported women’s suffrage. Without his approval, Douglass became the first African American nominated for Vice President of the United States as the running mate of Victoria Woodhull on the Equal Rights Party ticket. Douglass believed in the equal rights of all people. Greener was once called “the most gifted Negro intellectual of his generation.” Though he was never held in the same esteem as Douglass or Booker T. Washington, his accomplishments were astonishing for an African American. He was the first black graduate of Harvard College and the first black faculty member of the University of South Carolina. He had two personas, one as a street-smart kid who grew into an assertive black activist and the other as a well-educated intellectual with a preference for law and literature. Greener was a powerful orator and his talents would bring him into contact with Douglass and worked as an editor of Douglass’ newspaper the Ne … [Click Below for Full Description]

Tuckey, R.N., To Which is Added the Journal of Professor Smith; Some General Observations on the Country and its Inhabitants Captain J.K. Tuckey & Professor Smith Albemarle Street, London: John Murray, 1818 First edition Condition: Very Good James Kingston Tuckey (1776-1816), an Irish-born English naval officer, was captured by the French on a voyage from St. Helena in 1805 and suffered an imprisonment of nearly nine years. Promoted to the rank of commander in 1814, he was later assigned to lead an expedition to explore the Congo River in 1816 to learn if there was a connection between the Congo and Niger basins. He explored the river up to 480 km from the sea. Most of the officers and crew died of fever and Tuckey himself died on 14 October 1816, aged 40, in Moanda, on the coast of today's Democratic Republic of the Congo. The expedition was a failure but raised interest in the exploration of Africa. This book is an account of the expedition, with thirteen plates, one colored by hand, and a large fold-out frontispiece map. This is a very good copy, rebacked and retaining the original quarter leather and marbled paper-covered boards. Later Pinckney Family bookplate on front pastedown. SIGNED by Charles Cotesworth Pinckney on title page. I've done my best to describe the book, but if you have additional questions, please don't hesitate to send me an e-mail. Charles Cotesworth Pinckney (February 25, 1746 - August 16, 1825) was an early American statesman of South Carolina, Revolutionary War veteran, and delegate to the Constitutional Convention. He was twice nominated by the Federalist Party as its presidential candidate in 1804 and 1808, losing both elections. Pinckney was born into a powerful family of aristocratic planters. He practiced law for several years and was elected to the colonial legislature. A supporter of independence from Britain, Pinckney served in the American Revolutionary War, rising to the rank of brigadier general. After the war, he won election to the South Carolina legislature, where he and his brother Thomas Pinckney represented the landed elite of the South Carolina Lowcountry. An advocate of a stronger federal government, Pinckney served as a delegate to the 1787 Philadelphia Convention, which wrote a new federal constitution. Pinckney's influence helped ensure that South Carolina would ratify the United States Constitution. Pinckney declined George Washington's first offer to serve in his administration, but in 1796 Pinckney accepted the position of Minister to France. In what became … [Click Below for Full Description]

M'Leod, the surgeon of the Alceste, took part in this voyage under the command of Captain Maxwell. At that time, Lord Amherst's Embassy was in China and Amherst himself was on board the Alceste when she was wrecked on her return journey. Amherst and all the crew survived. M'Leod's book contains a wealth of information on both China and Korea. 'The Alceste and the Lyra conveyed Lord Amherst's embassy to China, which was the second attempt by the British to open trade with China, after the first effort by Lord Macartney. The Alceste reached Rio de Janeiro in 1816, and then proceeded to the Cape of Good Hope. N. Wiliam Waxall
ont> T Cadell and W. Davies : London, 1818 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition.. Three volumes of Nathaniel William Wraxall's memoirs of life in the late eighteenth century. The third edition of this work. This corrected edition was published in 1818, after Wraxall had suspended the sale of his memoirs (originally published in 1816), after being sent to prison for libel from the first edition of this work. He revised and edited this edition to avoid a similar error. Nathaniel William Wraxall was acquainted with various Danish nobles, who persuaded him to persuade the English King to act kindly on behalf of his sister, Queen Caroline, who had been deposed. His experiences are mentioned in his memoir, as well as describing is curious presentation at the court of Portugal. After travelling around Europe, Wraxall returned in England in the 1780s and entering Parliament for the Tories. He was made a baronet in 1813, and also published various works on histravels, such as 'A Tour Round the Baltic', and 'Memoirs of the Kings of France of the Race of Valois'. When he died he left a work of the history of France unfinished. With a portrait of Wraxall to the frontispiece of Volume I. Volume I contains 1772 to 1780, Volume II contains January 1781 to March 1782, and Volume II contains March 1782 to March 1784. Condition: Rebacked with the original calf boards and spine laid on. Externally, generally smart. Several marks to boards, heavier to the front boards of Volumes I and III. Hinges of Volume I are starting but firm. PHARMACEUTICAL ADVERTISING
1818. Japan: various sizes and various dates, mostly printed in black, some in red, ranging from 1818 to 1906. A remarkable collection of pharmaceutical ephemera: these broadsides and envelopes were issued by pharmaceutical companies from all over Japan, for advertising and dispensing a wide variety of tablets, ointments, powders, plasters, herbal medicines, and pastes. These medicines were used for a wide variety of illnesses: indigestion, conjunctivitis, kidney disease, sea sickness, diarrhea, etc. Indeed, one of the medicines is advertised as efficacious in curing 10,000 diseases. Some of these broadsides lists many kinds of medicines produced and marketed by a single manufacturer. Many have company logos. Each broadside and envelope lists the manufacturer's name and place, the name of the medicine, sometimes the price, and the diseases it could cure. The large chart, printed on both sides, lists more than 500 foods, including grains, vegetables, meat, fish, and fruits, organized in Japanese alphabetical order. Below each item is a recommendation regarding who should consume this food (for instance, some are good for old people but not the young, etc.), and food combinations that are beneficial or dangerous. Many of these medicines still exist. For example, "Uzu no Kyumei gan" was first produced in 1597 for pediatric illnesses and is still dispensed today. Mostly in fine condition.

ISABEY, Jean-Baptiste
1818. Original painting for the lithograph that appeared in the book of Caricatures published in Paris 1818. Watercolour on, paper 15 x 13 cm. (Illustrated also the published version). Signed and dated lower right. “These twelve pseudonymous designs were the pastimes of Jean-Baptiste Isabey, a miniature painter of repute, who was the father of Eugène Isabey. Of great verve and spirit in themselves, their grotesque figures, tall or short, fat or thin, provide a link with English caricature of the previous quarter of a century, particularly the work of Thomas Rowlandson. Isabey’s situations are as gross and indelicate as his people. Indeed, This album foreshadows what was to be the prevailing style among caricaturists of manners in the early 1820s (Ray, The Art of the French Illustrated Book).
