Benjamin CONSTANT
First Edition. Paperback, in blue paper era. Second letter from Benjamin Constant at the lawyer at the court of cassation Odillon Barrot, in which the author takes once again the defense of the accused, sentenced to death not on evidence but rumors and prejudices. "I will show earlier than those on whom suspicion could hover, Regnault was the one he had at least achieved. "Constant incorporates all the facts of the case, considers and confronts and dismantles the prosecution. The relationship is very interesting. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate. Contact us for any information! Faraday, Scorsby, Loudon, Park, and numerous others.
"The Quarterly Journal of Science and the Arts (of the Royal Society of Great Britain)". London, printed by John Murray, volume IV, 1818; 8.5x5”, vi, 416 pp, 9 plates 5 of which are folding. (Also--three of the folding plates are lithographs, which is an extremely early appearance of this process which was invented by Alois Senefelder in Bavaria in 1796, though the process really was comparatively very little used in book production until the first quarter of the 19th century. These images were made at the lithographic press of Moser and Harris and frankly show a number of the early problems--at least at this press--with the process, as the images here are not very strong.) Half-calf, marbled boards. The hinges on the front and rear are a little rubbed and worn. Overall, a Very Good copy. This is an ex-libris copy from the Royal Society of Edinburgh, with their motto gilt-stamped in one of the spine panels (that being the only previous owner indication). The volume contains a few dozen contributions (plus many more in shorter abstracts), though some of the most interesting include the following: (J.C. Loudon), "On the Construction of Prisons", pp 169-176, accompanied by two wonderful engravings of plans and elevations of two suggestions;de Candolle, "On the Effect of Elevation above the level of the Sea upon the Geography of Plants in France"; Michael Faraday, "On the Sulphuret of Phosphorus", p. 361-2; William Scorsby, "On the Greenland or Polar Ice", pp 247-268; M.C.F. A very good copy. First edition: rare. OCLC & COPAC locate only 6 copies: BL + N.L.Sweden + Un. of Leiden + Bryn Athyn Coll. + Urbana (Swedenborg Mem.Lib.) + Graduate Theol. Union. Lib. Joseph Proud (1745-1826), Swedenborgian preacher and hymn writer, had moved to Birmingham in 1790 'to commence a Swedenborgian congregation there, occupying himself in the meantime by writing the first Swedenborgian hymnbook. In May 1791 he was ordained into the ministry of the New Jerusalem church, and in June a grand temple was opened with a flourish and some puzzled attention from Priestley and the Unitarians, but it was saved from burning in the church and king riots a month later only when Proud insisted on the patriotism of the congregation. This indeed was Proud's view; he was far from the radical experimentation of other early Swedenborgians, lacking the interest in the intricacies of Swedenborgian thought of other devoted followers, and feeling uneasy enough to abandon extemporaneous preaching on joining the sect. He wore robes to officiate as minister, but the grand temple had to be abandoned a year later when the society's sponsor defaulted. He was on friendly terms with the Unitarians and preached at their chapel in Warwick in 1792. After a brief ministry in Manchester in 1793–4 and a period of … [Click Below for Full Description]

HOLROYD, John Baker,] Earl of SHEFFIELD
London: J. Hatchard, 1818. 8vo., iv + (3)-60pp., recent cloth-backed marbled boards with morocco label on upper cover lettered in gilt. A very good copy. First edition. A wide-ranging review of the operation of the Poor Laws triggered by the recently published reports of committees of both the House of Lords and the House of Commons. Sheffield attributes all evils in practice to deviations from the original system of Elizabeth I. He suggests that strict enforcement should be revived, agricultural apprenticeships should be restored, savings banks encouraged and land allotments should not be given. 'It is a great mistake', writes the author, 'to suppose that the object of what we call the Poor Laws, was merely charity: their object was also the correction of the depravity of the lower ranks, 'to check sturdy beggars', and to discourage various abuses. The author strongly condemns the present management of the poor as a disgrace to the policy and political economy of the poor. He alleges that the heavy burden of the poor rate had so ruined small tradesmen as to have added to, rather than reduced, the existing number of paupers. He advocates the abandonment of the whole system; the separation and classification of paupers, the education of pauper children, and their separation from criminal parents. He proposes the unemployed be used for agricultural work. Holroyd, an intimate friend of Gibbon, wrote numerous pamphlets on economic subjects, including commerce, manufactures, slavery and the Corn Laws. His estate at Sheffield Place, in Sussex, was regarded as a model of farming. … [Click Below for Full Description]

Susan Ferrier
Edinburgh - William Blackwood and John Murray 1818 - A three volume first edition set of Susan Ferrier's Marriage: A Novel in Three Volumes. Susan Edmonstone Ferrier (1782 1854) was a Scottish novelist. The novels, which combine humour with vivid accounts of Scottish social life and sharp views on marriage and female education, retained their popularity through the 19th century, but then it began to wane, although editions of Marriage have appeared sporadically since the Second World War. According to an early 20th-century history of literature, In the novels of Susan Edmonstone Ferrier there is something of the rough sarcasm of Smollett, mingled with a strong didactic flavour and with occasional displays of sentiment that may be due to Mackenzie. To her personal friend Scott, she may have owed something in her studies of Scottish life, but Maria Edgeworth was her principal model. The book criticizes her works for loose plotting and coarse workmanship , but praises her vigour and calls it fresh and interesting. It has been argued recently that the three novels form a trilogy an extended inquiry on the subjects of nation, history, and the evolution of female consciousness. Condition: In quarter cloth bindings. Externally generally smart with light rubbing and some wear to the extremities. Internally generally firmly bound, though the hinges are showing signs of starting. Pages generally clean, with scattered foxing and the occasional tidemark. Stamp to front pastedowns of all volumes. Overall: VERY GOOD. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Fore-edge painting] HOBHOUSE, John (1786-1869).
London: John Murray, 1818. London:: John Murray, 1818., 1818. 8vo. viii, 576 pp. "3 plates" Original green straight grain morocco, gilt rules, gilt-stamped raised bands, rouge endleaves. Bookplates of John Bolton and Marjorie & Martin Mitau. Very good. With a fore-edge painting under the gold entitled: "Fore Edge, Castle & Bridge of St. Angelo, Tomb of Hadrian." The old Castle at St. Angelo is referenced on p.300: "This imitation of Egyptian deformity must not be supposed to apply to the mausoleum of Hadrian, but to the monstrous divinities, and the fabrics of the Tiburtine villa. The Mole was constructed, it is thought, on the plan, nearly, of the Mausoleum of Augustus or Cecilia Metella." [Aikin]. A classic scene often depicted on fore-edge paintings. Provenance: Martin Mitau (1900–1973) and Marjorie (nee Fleishhacker) Mitau (1906–1983) were both San Franciscans and lived in the Bay Area all their lives. He was a member of Roxburghe Club of San Francisco and the Book Club of California, and their collection was strong in California fine printing. – Kelmscott Chaucer census. [JWRB]

SCOTT, Sir Walter
Paris: (Cosson for) Charles Gosselin and Ladvocat, 1818. 4 volume set, 7 inches tall. Quarter calf with twin labels and gilt centre tools. Waverley first appeared in French in 1818, before Scott attained celebrity in France and therefore now very rare. This reprint is for the first of Gosselin’s collected Oeuvres complètes. This set is from the library, though without the bookplates, assembled at Voltaire's former home, the Chateau de Cirey ( Champagne) by Mme de Simiane ( 1761-1835 ), sometime lover of Lafayette and later, a correspondent of Fanny Burney. Diane-Adelaide de Simiane's early life was colourful and she came to Cirey in 1795 after a period of incarceration during the Terror. Previously she had been married to Charles-Francois de Simiane, who had served with Lafayette in America and who died in mysterious circumstances in 1787. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Risso, [J.] A. and [P.] A. Poiteau
Paris, Mme hérisant Le Doux, 1818-1819. Folio (36.5 x 27.0 cm). 82 (of 109) Colour-printed plates, finished by hand and 172 (of 280) pages with plate descriptions. Original printed wrappers.= The most beautifully illustrated work on citrus fruits ever, by the French pharmacist, botanist, malacologist and geologist Joseph Antoine Risso (1777-1845) in cooperation with the French illustrator Pierre Antoine Poiteau (1766-1854). "It contains exquisite drawings of every variety of orange, lemon and grapefruit, and their congeners. A beautiful and inspiring work" (Sitwell). Complete copies are rare, coloured copies, such as in this set, utterly rare and expensive. This is a very large part in original wrappers. Present are the livraisons 1-12 (pp. 1-104, 109-172; plates 1-72). Lacking are the livraisons 13-19, and two text sheets (pp. 105-108). The livraisons are numbered by hand, and this appears to be partly faulty. The contents differ widely from the listing - "by inference" - in Stafleu and Cowan. The original wrappers are usually discarded in bound copies and now very rare. Plate 15 number corrected in pencil. Wrappers chipped and frayed at edges and at spine fold, a few split along the fold, or with larger tears. All unmarked. The text and plates with minimal fraying at the outer edges, a few plates somewhat toned, one text section and a few plates with a weak, circular dampstain in the outer margin, otherwise very good, clean. Nissen, BBI 1640; Sitwell-Blunt, 73; Stafleu and Cowan, 9248. [Attributes: Soft Cover]
