1818. Condition: Ottime condizioni. Limited and numbered edition of 900 (This is the nr. 488). The expedition was underfunded, lacked support and had to cross the Sahara as part of their journey. A year later, due to much officialdom they had only got as far as Murzuk where they both fell ill. Shelley, Percy Bysshe
London: Messrs. Brookes & Co, 1818. Pen and ink on paper, small embossed stamp of crown and "Bath" top left corner. 3-3/16 x 7-5/16 inches. Signature canceled but very legible, old folds and soiling, verso blank. Pen and ink on paper, small embossed stamp of crown and "Bath" top left corner. 3-3/16 x 7-5/16 inches. In the Spring of 1817, Percy and Mary Shelley moved into their new home in Marlow, Albion House, after securing a longterm lease, and enjoyed several months of idyllic tranquility there. But by September, according to Richard Holmes in SHELLEY: THE PURSUIT (NY, 1975, pp. 367-413), "the atmosphere seemed to grow chilly in Albion House. Mary noted that the lowered declination of the sun prevented it from reaching over the roof into the garden, and the rooms seemed to become perpetually dark and damp. Later she discovered that all Shelley's books in the library had gathered a sinister blue mould."As for Percy, by September he was plunged into despondency: "There were his debts; the responsibility of Alba and Mary's complaints about Claire [Clairmont] ... and the collapse of his health in the autumnal damp of Albion House ... Shelley now decided that the house at Marlow could never be their permanent home. This was to be a momentous decision. By the end of September he was already advertising the lease for sale ..." On the 25th of January, according to Holmes, "Albion House had found a definite buyer. The decision to go to Italy was now made."On the literary front, Shelley had just edited and reissued his long poem The Revolt of Islam, originally published in 1817 … [Click Below for Full Description]

Shelley, Percy Bysshe
Messrs. Brookes & Co, London, 1818. Later she discovered that all Shelley's books in the library had gathered a sinister blue mould." As for Percy, by September he was plunged into despondency: "There were his debts; the responsibility of Alba and Mary's complaints about Claire [Clairmont] . and the collapse of his health in the autumnal damp of Albion House . Shelley now decided that the house at Marlow could never be their permanent home. This was to be a momentous decision. By the end of September he was already advertising the lease for sale ." On the 25th of January, according to Holmes, "Albion House had found a definite buyer. The decision to go to Italy was now made." On the literary front, Shelley had just edited and reissued his long poem The Revolt of Islam, originally published in 1817 as Laon & Cythna; or The Revolution of the Golden City, to largely hostile reviews. Mary Shelley's Frankenstein was published anonymously on January 1, 1818. Signature canceled but ve … [Click Below for Full Description]

Belzoni, Giovanni Battista
1818. "One of the most fascinanting books in the whole of egyptian literature" (Howard Carter). Atlas with very fresh and bright colors. PROVENANCE: Sir Horace Rumbold's copy, British Ambassador to Berlin when Hitler came to power, and also when the First World War started. Bookplate with Demi-Lion Rampant and Motto of the Rumbold family "VIRTUTIS LAUS ACTIO" (The Praise of Virtue is Action) on the text volume. He is best remember for his role in warning England of the ambitions of Hitler and Nazi Germany. Very rare. First edition, not in Atabey, Weber, of "the first English work of any importance to use lithography" (Blackmer). The Atlas contains the first state of lithographs, watermarked 1818 or 1819 or Whatman, this copy with very vivid colors, depicting Belzoni's archaeological discoveries - "the first man known to have excavated in the Valley of the Kings" (Romer 51). "As many as eight colours are used on one plate for the coloured illustrations, and the colouring is skilfully done" (Abbey Travel, 268, only the Atlas). Not only that the colour pigments used are magnificent, but the lithographs faithfuly reproduce the graduation of colour in the bas-reliefs, which become more bright and intense the more we advance in the interior of Seti's tomb. A second issue of the Plates with reset title-page appeared in 1821, and is described by some as being the first edition, which in fact is not (see BAL, Early printed books, no. 247). Very good condition, very clean. Set preserved in an unique massive handmade case, size 65 x 54 cm, made of bleumarin with gray and blue tones, g … [Click Below for Full Description]

Paulding, James Kirke
M. Thomas, Philadelphia, 1818. First edition of James Kirke Paulding's romance of the frontier, in an early American binding tooled with the owner's name. Best remembered for collaborating with his friend Washington Irving on the satirical periodical Salmagundi (1807-1808), Paulding was a prolific writer of fiction, poetry, drama, travel, and biography; he also served as United States Secretary of the Navy from 1838 to 1841. The Backwoodsman was intended to inspire a new American literature: "to indicate to the youthful writers of his native country, the rich poetic resources with which it abounds, as well as to call their attention home." Paulding freely admits that the story of his backwoodsman Basil, who leaves the Hudson Valley to make a life for his family on the frontier, is primarily a pretext for an extended lyrical treatment of the American landscape, punctuated by stirring speeches from the Native Americans who threaten the settlers: "Were I a Christian I would scalp thee now; / Go home, and lye amid thy very pray'rs, / And say the bloody Indian never spares." Paulding's detailed and striking descriptions of regional scenery and wildlife, east to west, are drawn from his extensive travels. State A, with notes present (177-180). BAL 15694. A near-fine copy of an early attempt at an American epic, in a nineteenth-century owner's handsome personalized binding. Octavo, measuring 7 x 4.25 inches: [8], 198, [2]. Nineteenth-century full red morocco gilt, spine ruled and decorated in gilt, wide Greek key borders in gilt to boards, "Miss Mary Whittle" lettered in gilt to f … [Click Below for Full Description]
