FRANCE. MORGAN, Lady [Sidney Owenson].
Henry Colburn, London., 1818. Fourth edition, with additional notes. Octavo. Two volumes: pp xvi, 428; viii, 415, clxxxi appendices. Period binding of full marble calf, gilt decorated spines, green title- and volume-labels lettered in gilt, gilt outer dentelles. Marbled endpapers. Armorial bookplate on front pastedown of each volume. The four appendices are on the state of law, finance, medicine and political opinion in France. The author was a well-regarded novelist, best known for The Wild Irish Girl (1805), which drew a certain amount of controversy although not nearly as much as did her book on France under the Bourbon Restoration; she was accused of Jacobinism, falsehood, licentiousness and impiety; the French were not happy with her depiction of the poorer classes, of which she had considerable knowledge. Byron and Shelley thought highly of her. She was apparently less than four feet tall and elusive about her age.Hinges just a little rubbed. Very good indeed.

MANSON Marie Francoise Clarisse
Chez Pillet, imprimeur Librairie, 1818. In 8, pp. XXXII + 190 + (2) con una tav. all'antip. inc. all'acq., 1 tav. in facsimile rip. f.t., testatina inc. Grande rilevanza ebbe all'epoca l'affaire Fualdes. Evelyn, John
London: printed for Henry Colburn, and sold by John and Arthur Arch, 1818. First edition, 2 volumes, 4to, 8 engraved plates (2 folding), folding table; recent half tan calf antique over marbled boards, red morocco labels on gilt-decorated spine; shadow of tape stain on front free endpaper, some limpness from damp in margin of frontispiece portrait, occasional foxing and spotting, especially on the last couple of leaves of vol. I, and in the margins of a couple of the plates; textblock otherwise very good and the binding overall is fine. John Evelyn (1620-1706) the author of Sylva and miscellaneous other writings, is best remembered today for his famous Diary which was not published for over a hundred years after his death. It covers most of the major events of his life, describing his travels abroad, his contemporaries, and his public and domestic concerns, and is an invaluable source for the study of the 17th century. Evelyn's Diary is often compared with that of his contemporary, Samuel Pepys (1633-1703), whose Diary also appeared more than 100 years after his death, in 1825. Keynes 132; Sterling 354.
