CALHOUN, J[ohn] C (1782-1850), US Vice President, Secretary of War, defender of slavery
, December 1, 1818. December 1, 1818. Calhoun signed the Revolutionary War pension claim of Robert Hamilton of Massachusetts who had been a Lieutenant in the Army of the Revolution. Some marginal chiping and tears at the fold (affecting the "J" in the signature of J.C. Calhoun). A good copy. Wikipedia: "John Caldwell Calhoun:March 18, 1782 – March 31, 1850) was an American statesman and political theorist from South Carolina, who is best remembered for his strong defense of slavery and for advancing the concept of minority rights in politics, which he did in the context of defending Southern values from perceived Northern threats. He began his political career as a nationalist, modernizer, and proponent of a strong national government and protective tariffs. By the late 1820s, his views reversed and he became a leading proponent of states' rights, limited government, nullification, and opposition to high tariffs—he saw Northern acceptance of these policies as the only way to keep the South in the Union. His beliefs and warnings heavily influenced the South's secession from the Union in 1860–61. Calhoun began his political career with election to the House of Representatives. As a prominent leader of the war hawk faction, Calhoun strongly supported the War of 1812 to defend American honor against Britain. He then served as Secretary of War under President James Monroe, and in his position reorganized and modernized the War Department. In the 1824 presidential election, he was the overwhelming choice of the electoral college for Vice President of the United States. He serv … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Conciliatore]
Tipografia dell'editore Vincenzo Ferrario, contrada San Vittore e 40 Martiri. [Click Below for Full Description]

First and only edition of this informative account of all the grammar schools in England and Wales. "Nicholas Carlisle (1771-1847) entered the Naval Service before becoming Secretary to the Society of Antiquaries in Somerset and dedicating his time to a series of long, detailed and useful compilations. Between 1808 and 1813 he produced topographical dictionaries of England, Ireland, Wales and Scotland. In 1818 he published the pioneering work "A Concise Description of the Endowed Grammar Schools in England and Wales". He subsequently indexed the journal "Archaeologia" and the first 14 reports of the charity commissioners, and was for a time a commissioner himself. The Charity Commission was proposed in 1816 by Henry Brougham (later Lord Chancellor), and its reports, beginning in 1819, form an important source for the history of 19th-century education. Carlisle pre-empted the Charity Commission with the publication of this major work which attempted to give an account of all the grammar schools in England and Wales. To compile this work Carlisle had sent out a c … [Click Below for Full Description]

BRONTË FAMILY) BRONTË, Patrick.
Bradford: T. Inkersley. 1818. Engr. front. after F. James, sculpted by E. Stather; sl. offsetting on titlepage. Later 19th century full crimson crushed morocco, triple ruled gilt borders, raised bands, gilt compartments & dentelles, green & brown morocco labels. Bookplate of George John Armytage. v.g. 69pp. Brontë's tale emphasises the virtues of Christian conviction and restraint, and shows that a happy and loving relationship can only be achieved when the teachings of God have been truly accepted. Mary, the heroine, steadfastly rebuts the constant approaches of the dashing Mr Bower, as she cannot reconcile her absolute faith with his religious indifference. Only when he has accepted the Gospel can their lives be shared and true happiness be attained. Mr Bower, despite losing his fortune, becomes 'rich' through spiritual enlightenment, and the familial comforts that follow. In his preamble, Brontë emphasises his commitment to presenting the truth of human existence, and advises the reader against the artifice and deception apparent in the literature of the day. He is in no doubt as to the damaging nature of the current literary trends: 'The sensual novelist and his admirer, are beings of depraved appetites and sickly imaginations, who have learnt the art of self-tormenting, are diligently and zealously employed in creating an imaginary world, which they can never inhabit . The romantic author, overstepping the bounds of probability, will freely indulge in the miraculous . transforming beggars into kings and queens, and kings and queens into beggars . extracting the most un … [Click Below for Full Description]
