O. O., 2. IX., o. J. 3 SS. auf gefalt. Doppelblatt. 8vo. (Caratini, Dict. Révol. p. 164 - longue biographie de G. Meilheurat in Bull. MILLAR, John.
London: Printed for J. Mawman,, 1818. To which are subjoined, some dissertations connected with the history of the government, from the revolution to the present time. 4 volumes, octavo (215 x 130 mm). Contemporary calf, green morocco labels to spines elaborately decorated in gilt, boards double-ruled in gilt, marbled endpapers and edges. Contemporary ownership inscription to title page. Extremities slightly rubbed, some occasional foxing to contents, otherwise a bright, excellent set. Fourth edition of the Scottish jurist's "whiggish correction" to Hume's History of England, first published in 1787. "The full scope of this became clear only with the posthumous third edition, which took the story up to 1688 and also included a volume of essays dealing with the post-revolutionary political debate" (ODNB). Millar (1735–1801) studied law at Glasgow, where he attended the lectures of Adam Smith; they struck up a lasting and mutually beneficial friendship. After graduating, Millar spent time as a tutor for Lord Kames's family (through whom he met David Hume) before returning to Glasgow after accepting the position of regius chair of civil law. Despite political and philosophical differences, both Hume and Smith greatly respected Millar and sent members of their families to study under him. "It is undoubtedly the case that he made a significant contribution to a remarkable period of, not only Scottish, but European intellectual history" (Louglin, p. 376).
