Ottley
London: Longman, Hurst, Rees Orme and Brown, 1818. Condition: Very good. When ordering from the US, parcels may be subject to import tax and duty charges, which the buyer is responsible to pay. The full title to this book is: Engravings of the Most Noble the Marquis of Stafford's collection of pictures in London, arranged according to schools and in chronological order, with remarks on each picture by William Young Ottley, Esq. F.S.A. The executive part under the management of Peltro William Tomkins, Esq., historical engraver to Her Majesty. This is the original book, subdivided in four volumes with original engravings and printed plans showing where the art was displayed in the house. Each engraving has it's own plate indent and required text as was originally produced. The book is covered in leather and has a gold stamp on the front and back. The binding is tight except that the front cover with about 10 pages attached is loose from the rest of the book and the back cover is also about to come loose. Pages have some foxing, especially on the back of some of the early pages and the leather has a lot of wear as is consistent with age. No prints have been removed though as far as I can tell. This is a truly remarkable find, a very rare and a unique piece. The book is large (elephant folio?) and heavy. It measures 16 ½" by 13" by 2 1/2" and weighs 14 ½ pounds without packaging. Publisher Longman, Hurst, Rees Orme and Brown Character Family does not apply Illustrator Tomkins Language English Author Ottley Special Attributes 1st Edition Special Attributes Illustrated Special At … [Click Below for Full Description]

BROWN, Thomas, the Elder, pseud.)
Printed for the Author: and sold by Sherwood, Neely, and Jones. 1818. FIRST EDITION. 3 vols. 12mo. Bound without half titles in contemporary half calf, gilt spines. Neat contemp. monogram stamp to e.ps 'A.J.C'. A v.g., attractive copy. Not in the BL who record a second edition published in the same year; Oxford, Leeds & Liverpool only on Copac. The pseudonymous 'Thomas Brown, the Elder' was also the author of Brighton, The Englishman in Paris 1819, London, or a Month at Steven's, 1819 and Edinburgh, 1820. Types of visitors to Bath are described and lampooned but satire occasionally descends into 'scandalmongering' or even mild pornography. The portraits include that of Coleridge whose career is seen (through contemporary eyes) as that of a turn-coat both in poetry and politics. Thomas Moore used the pseudonym of 'Thomas Brown, the Younger' but the identity of his 'elder brother' remains unknown. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

J. Williams, 1818), oblong 32mo, pp. [2], 251, 3-page "Metrical Index;" the two together, with the Psalms and Hymns bound above the Sacred Musick, making a single 8vo volume; contemporary and probably original sheepskin, thin gilt rules on spine, wear and damage to extremities, the whole somewhat rubbed, and the covers slightly warped; both lyrics and music with scattered light foxing, tidemarks to pastedowns and flyleaves, but overall a sturdy copy of an innovatively bound hymnbook that allows for myriad combinations of melodies and words. Watts (1674-1748), "The Father of English Hymnody," was renowned for his sensitive, poetic paraphrasing of biblical verse; his Psalms of David, which first appeared in 1719, was his most popular work. In this version, one Moses Elliot lays claim to the book's ingenious format: "The public is here offered a valuable collection of approved tunes bound with Watts' Psalms, in such a manner that any tune may be presented to the eye with any psalm or hymn. A fascinating letter from Arctic explorer William Parry, then a young buck who had just completed his first expedition to the frozen north, to astronomer, comet hunter and composer Sir William Herschel [in Slough], from London and dated December 14th 1818, addressed to "My dear Sir" and referring to Herschel again as "Sir" at the conclusion. Parry apologises for not being able to take up the invitation of Miss Wilson [daughter of Scottish astronomer Alexander Wilson] due to a prior engagement. He then asks Herschel to offer "my best thanks to Miss W." and sends his "kindest regards to Lady H." [Herschel's wife Mary] and to Miss Baldwin [niece of William Herschel's wife]. Parry had become acquainted with William Herschel the year before, following an introduction from botanist Sir Joseph Banks, who he had also met for the first time in 1817. Maclure, William, A. Ellicot, William Lambert, Robert Adrain, Robert Patterson, Thomas Say, et al.
Paris: A. Small, 1818. Hardcover. Good. 4to, rebound (probably mid 20th century) in cloth backed boards with typed spine label, xxiv, 454 (1) pp, with very good example of the handcolored map for Maclure's essay - considered the first comprehensive geological map of the United States, it measures 20 x 17.25 inches including its margins, repair using wheat paste and rice paper to a 1.5 inch tear along right margin that just crosses plate line, minor marginal soil else in very good condition. It has been excised from the book and is laid in loosely. Another folding colored geological plate is bound in at p. 90. Text block slightly trimmed. Collation of plates has met some hurdles. There is the map, and the already mentioned geological plate at p. 90. Plates numbered 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, and 13 are accounted for, and the plate of the "large wen" is unnumbered but probably can be counted as plate no. 3, so together with the map and the geological plate, we have 13 plates altogether, but several articles listed in the table of contents claim they are accompanied by a plate that cannot be found: one of a differential thermometer, one of a rolling draw-gate, one of an Indian Fort near Lexington KY, an improved piston for a steam engine, and one accompanying an article on bleaching. Perhaps these were never printed, or perhaps we are lacking them. The geological map, slightly larger (we are unsure if it included the margins) sold at Sotheby's framed for $2200 including premium at Sotheby's in 2018, also with a repair to right margin.

Bewick, Thomas.
Newcastle upon Tyne, E Walker for T Bewick and Son, 1818. First edition thus, one of only 500 Imperial copies on thick paper. Pp [2] Thumb Mark Receipt, [2]], xxiv, 376. 188 fable cuts and 136 tailpieces. A fine copy in superb full brown morocco by Riviere with 5 raised bands, gilt titles and foliate decoration to compartments; triple gilt-ruled border to boards; aeg; gilt dentelles and bottle-green endpapers. Illustrated bookplate of H. C. Drayton to front pastedown; foxing to endpapers and blanks. The largest paper copy of the first edition of Bewick's Aesops in a very handsome Riviere binding. A truly collaborative effort in the Bewick workshop over seven years engravings in Aesop's spring from the hands of TB apprentices William Harvey, Isaac Nicholson, Edward Willis, Robert Bewick as well as Thomas Bewick himself; the latter likely drawing all of the blocks. This copy includes the "Thumb-Mark" receipt with seaweed motif and facsimile signatures which were intended as additions to subscribers copies, lacking in many copies (though Tattersfield makes it very clear that many copies of Aesop were issued before the receipts were printed in late 1818, meaning that such copies should still be regarded as complete). Tattersfield pp. 66-8; Roscoe pp. 155-165.

London: J. M. Richardson, 1818. London: J. M. Richardson,, 1818. In Refutation of Certain Popular Notions on that Subject. Octavo (197 x 120 mm). Recent quarter cloth, paper label to spine, marbled paper sides. Light marking to cloth, some very faint scattered foxing, else an excellent copy. First separate edition of this anonymous tract, originally published in The Pamphleteer Volume XII, number 23. Arnold Plant declared that "the anonymous author of this tract should take his place with Ricardo, J. S. Mill, Longfield, Mangoldt and Edgeworth as one of the outstanding exponents of the theory of international trade in the nineteenth century... His use of algebraic symbols in setting out the ratios between the quantities of commodities, his method of ascertaining from these ratios which of a number of commodities can be most advantageously exported and imported, his demonstration that the ratios used may be either those of quantities of different commodities within the same countries or of the same commodities in different countries, will bear comparison with, for instance, Professor Viner's own lucid exposition well over a century later" (Plant, introduction to 1933 reprinting, pp. 40-41). Although the tract was reprinted in the Pamphleteer in the same year, it has otherwise left little trace. It is now a great scarcity, with no known auction records, and only eight copies of the first edition known in public institutions worldwide.

The Unanimous Declaration of the thirteen United States of America."BENJAMIN OWEN TYLER.Broadside, Drawn by Tyler and engraved by Peter Maverick, [Washington, D.C., 1818]. 1 p.Historical BackgroundTyler's engraving of the Declaration was the first such decorative print with facsimiles of the signatures, based on the original manuscript. Tyler, a penmanship professor, copied the signatures by hand. The exactness of his work is particularly impressive given the limitations of copying them freehand. Richard Rush, son of the signer Benjamin Rush, and acting Secretary of State in 1817, gave his endorsement which is printed on the bottom left corner: "The foregoing copy of the Declaration of Independence has been collated with the original instrument and found correct. I have myself examined the signatures to each. Those executed by Mr. Tyler are curiously exact imitations, so much so, that it would be difficult, if not impossible, for the closest scrutiny to distinguish them, were it not for the hand of time, from the originals." More importantly, Tyler also won the endorsement of the author of the Declaration, Thomas Jefferson, to whom his edition is dedicated. The Albert and Shirley Small Special Collections Library of the University of Virginia provides background on the Tyler printing:In 1815, the United States concluded its second war with Britain, the War of 1812, and American nationalism blossomed in its wake. Reinforcing this renewed patriotism, the passing of the signers' generation created a passionate interest in all thing … [Click Below for Full Description]

His Historical Memoirs appeared in 1815. Both they and the Posthumous Memoirs (1836) are very readable and have real historical value. Wraxall believed that the Government of the day, furious at his truthfulness, was behind a libel action which sent him to prison for three months in 1816. Hence the posthumous publication of the later memoirs. He died suddenly at Dover on 7 November 1831, whilst travelling to Naples. Complete in three volumes.
