BESSEL, FRIEDRICH WILHELM. - REDUCING THE "PERSONAL EQUATION".
Regiomonti (Königsberg), Frid. Nicolovium, 1818. Folio. Near contemp. hcalf. Gilt spine with gilt lettering. A small nick at upper backhinge. (12),325,(1) pp. Light scattered brownspots. Top of title-page with old owners name and a small stamp. ¶ First edition of this milestone work in astronomical obeservation, where Bessel reduced the observations for the "personal equation" based on Bradley's observations and here published Bradley's Greenwich observations for the first time and making a catalogue of 3222 stars extracted from them.<br>"The positions of Bradley’s stars valid for 1755 were published by Bessel as Fundamenta astronomiae pro anno 1755 (1818). This work also gives the proper motions of the stars, as derived from these observations of Bradley, of Piazzi, and of Bessel himself. It constitutes a milestone in the history of astronomical observations, for until then positions of stars could not be given with comparable accuracy: through Bessel’s work, Bradley’s observations were made to mark the beginning of modern astrometry. During this investigation Bessel became an admirer of the art of observation as practiced by Bradley; and because Bradley could not evaluate his own observations, Bessel followed and also taught the principle that immediately after an observation, the reduction had to be done by the observer himself. Further, he realized that the accurate determination of the motions of the planets and the stars required continuous observations of their positions until such motions could be used to predict "the positions of the stars .... for a … [Click Below for Full Description]

BESSEL, Friedrich Wilhelm.
Friedrich Nicolovius, Königsberg. A fine copy of this work which "constitutes a milestone in the history of astronomical observations, for until then positions of stars could not be given with comparable accuracy: through Bessel’s work, Bradley’s observations were made to mark the beginning of modern astrometry" (Walter Fricke in DSB). Norman 226; Honeyman 311."In 1807 Olbers encouraged [Bessel] to do a reduction of Bradley’s observations of the positions of 3,222 stars, which had been made from 1750 to 1762 at the Royal Greenwich Observatory. This task led to one of his greatest achievements . "Bessel recognized that Bradley’s observations gave a system of very accurate star positions for the epoch 1755 and that this could be utilized in two ways. First, a reference system for the measurement of positions of stars and planets was required. Second, the study of star motions necessitated the determination of accurate positions for the earliest possible epoch. Tobias Mayer had determined fundamental star positions from his own observations around the middle of the eighteenth century, but Bradley was never able to reduce his own numerous observations. "The observations of star positions had to be freed of instrumental errors, insofar as these could be determined from the measurements themselves, and of errors caused by the earth’s atmosphere (refraction). The apparent star positions at the time of a particular observation (observation epoch) had to be reduced to a common point in time (mean epoch) so that they would be freed of the effects of the motion of the earth and of the … [Click Below for Full Description]

Cobbett, William
Clayton and Kingsland, 1818. Condition: Collectible, Good. New York, 1818. 12mo, contemporary calf, 184 pp. The scarce first edition of Cobbett's important work, printed in an edition of 5,000. A good copy in a contemporary calf binding. Sizable chip to calf at head of spine, hinges superficially cracked but holding, contemporary ownership signature to front free endpaper (dated in 1818), normal foxing to pages. An important work. "Having taken a lease on a Long Island farm, Cobbett lived a quieter life than during his first American sojourn, but he continued the Political Register from abroad as well as writing more books and tracts, most notably the agricultural treatise A Year's Residence in the United States of America (1818) and his widely selling Grammar of the English Language (1818). This latter work, which Cobbett saw as a testament to the intellectual capacity of himself and of the common people as a whole, was intended especially for the use of soldiers, sailors, apprentices, and plough-boys; accordingly Cobbett cheekily drew his examples of faulty grammar from the writings and speeches of such renowned political leaders as the duke of Wellington, Lord Castlereagh, and George III himself. The English Grammar continued to be used in English schools into the 1920s and 1930s." - Oxford DNB. Please contact us for additional pictures or information. [Attributes: First Edition]

WESLEY, JOHN:

Together with seven other missionaries he left Portsmouth in December 1813. Coke himself died on board the ship but in June 1814 the other missionaries arriving at Galle (southern tip of Ceylon). The Wesleyans acquired the presses and equipment of the Colombo Auxiliary Bible Society in 1816 and started to print publications under William Martin Harvard's supervision. (Ref. Nigel Seeley). The original envelope has an inscription (in an early 20th century hand) reading: "For Mrs. H. W. Hill's Museum with P.W. Robert's compliments. The enclosed is in all probability the first specimen of printing done at the Wesleyan Mission Press Colombo and is exceedingly rare". However the first known works printed by the Wesleyan Mission Press are dated 1817 (see Clair). It means that this little book cannot be the very first specimen but one of the earliest pieces printed at the press. His energy of character and spirit of enterprise soon led him beyond the routine of surveying. He threw into everything he did his habits of promptness, forethought and integrity, and almost everything he touched prospered. Much of his time in those years having been occupied as land agent for several large capitalists of New York City, he began the purchase and sale of lands on his own account, and thus laid the foundation of his large fortune. MELISH, John (1771-1822)
[Philadelphia, 1818. Engraved map, with full period hand colouring, dissected into 40 sections and linen backed (as issued). Inset of the West Indies, statistical table. Housed in a modern full blue morocco box. The first large-scale map of the United States: this very rare issue of great significance to the mapping of the West, being the edition used to determine the boundary between the U.S. and Mexico in the 1819 Adams-Onis treaty. A map of inestimable importance - one which synthesized the best data available at the crucial moment of the opening of American West, and one which, in a sense, envisioned and enabled the Manifest Destiny of the United States. "The cartographic publication that best publicized for the American people the data derived from the Lewis and Clark Expedition and Zebulon Pike's exploration of the southwest in 1806 and 1807 was John Melish's 1816 Map of the United States " (Ristow). Also, much like the Mitchell map of the previous century, the Melish became the map of record in many important treaties between the United States and Spain, Mexico, and both the Republic and State of Texas. Specifically, the United States-Mexico boundary was laid out on a copy of the map according to the Adams-Onis Treaty signed in February 22, 1819. The map also played a key role in the development of American mapmaking. "An exquisite map, it distinguished Melish as the leading American map publisher of the second decade and placed American maps on equal footing with those produced by the prestigious firms in London and Paris" (Schwartz). In fact, Melis … [Click Below for Full Description]

The first of Egan's five Boxiana volumes is essentially a history of the ring down to 1812. Subsequent volumes include historical elements, but are more notable for their coverage of contemporaneous events, written as they unfolded. Egan was very much at home in the boxing subculture, and exploited its distinctive slang in his writing. He was also master of the then rare skill of shorthand, lending his accounts of bouts an immediacy that strikes the reader even today. ***This listing is for only volume two of the two … [Click Below for Full Description]
