Declaration of Independence: Benjamin Tyler 1818 - First Print with Facsimile Signatures "In Congress, July 4th 1776. The Unanimous Declaration of the thirteen United States of America." BENJAMIN OWEN TYLER. Broadside, Drawn by Tyler and engraved by Peter Maverick, [Washington, D.C., 1818]. 1 p., 23⅞ x 31 in., archivally framed to approx. 32 x 40 in. Inventory #23683 Historical Background Tyler's engraving of the Declaration was the first such decorative print with facsimiles of the signatures, based on the original manuscript. Tyler, a penmanship professor, copied the signatures by hand. The exactness of his work is particularly impressive given the limitations of copying them freehand. Richard Rush, son of the signer Benjamin Rush, and acting Secretary of State in 1817, gave his endorsement which is printed on the bottom left corner: "The foregoing copy of the Declaration of Independence has been collated with the original instrument and found correct. I have myself examined the signatures to each. Those executed by Mr. Tyler are curiously exact imitations, so much so, that it would be difficult, if not impossible, for the closest scrutiny to distinguish them, were it not for the hand of time, from the originals." More importantly, Tyler also won the endorsement of the author of the Declaration, Thomas Jefferson, to whom his edition is dedicated. The Albert and Shirley Small Special Collections Library of the University of Virginia provides background on the Tyler printing: In 1815, the United States concluded its second war with Britain, the War of 1812, and American nat … [Click Below for Full Description]

Alexander de Humboldt; Aime Bonpland; Helen Maria Williams
London: Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, and Brown. Being a recollection of several expeditions by the Prussian polymath, Alexander von Humboldt. Humboldt kept a fastidious diary of his travels during the years 1799-1804 which has been translated into English by Helen Maria Williams. This work also has the observations and narratives of Humboldt's companion during the Americas for five years, Aime Bonpland. This work was the first time Latin America was explored and described from a modern scientific point of view. He was one of the first people to propose the idea that the lands bordering the Atlantic Ocean were once joined and was also the first person to describe the cause of human-induced climate change based on his own observations of the change in certain areas. With an introduction to the first volume by the translator, Helen Maria Williams. Williams translated several of Humboldt's works. With a frontispiece to the first volume. With five folding plates to the rear of 'Volume III'. All four books to this set are first editions. This set comprises of: Volume I & II in one volume as called for, 1818, being 'Books I and II'. Volume III, 1818, comprising of 'Books III and IV'. Vol V Part I, 1821, Comprising of the second chapter of 'Book VII' (XX) to the end of 'Book VII' (Chapter XXII) and the first chapter of 'Book VIII' (Chapter XXIII). MANNING, Sarah.
1818-[c.1847] 1. 68 lines on 3pp. 2. 53 lines on 2pp. 3. 29 lines on 1p. 4. 50 lines on 2 sides. 5. 25 lines on 1p. 6. 23 lines on 1p. All are on a single folded 4to sheet with integral address leaves; old folds, seal tear to first letter, a little dusted.A small but fascinating archive of letters describing the emotive history of a young family's migration to the United States. The first letter is written to Sarah's father Henry by George Andrews on behalf of James Manning, Sarah's husband. The following five letters are written by Sarah to her brother Robert Cutmore, a farmer at Fallapit Farm, East Allington, Devon. The earliest two letters, dated almost 17 years apart (1818 and 1835) convey a deep unhappiness at Sarah and James's new circumstances and hint at the malevolent relationship between husband and wife during the period separating the two letters. Writing of James shortly after his family's arrival in America, Andrews notes that 'Mr Manning expresses himself to be grievously disappointed in his expectations of this country and wishes himself back in Brent poor house in preference to remaining here ... I am not without some hope [however] that Mr Manning will after a while become reconciled to this country'. Unhappy with the fertility of the east coast soil, James was determined to move his family west. The following three letters are written from Louisville, Kentucky, where the family evidently settled. But by 1835 James had run away to New Orleans leaving behind Sarah and four children. 'A mingled joy and sorrow come over me for strange as it … [Click Below for Full Description]

Second edition of Bodoni's Manuale Tipografico, a masterpiece in the art of typography. ?The second and final edition of Bodoni's Manuale Tipografico - in two quarto volumes with a Discorso by his widow and Prefazione by Bodoni - appeared in 1818, five years after his death. It was completed under the care of his widow and Luigi Orsi, who was for twenty years foreman to Bodoni. Signora Bodoni, writing to M. Durand l'aîné of Metz, from Parma (14 November 1817), says: "The Manuale Tipografico in two volumes on papier-vèlin - the only kind of paper used for it - is not yet completed, but it will be, without fail, at the beginning of the coming year. I dare to believe that book-lovers will thank me for having published a volume which is so very important to Typography. The reception which it will have will make up for the trouble it has cost me (although, Bodoni has left the blocks or models for it) and the considerable expense which I shall have had to incur before it is finished. Greve, W.
Amsterdam, J. C. Sepp & Zoon, 1818. 8vo (20.5 x 12.6 cm) ii, 64 pp., seven plates including one hand-coloured frontispiece of a "heavy girl", one large, triple-folded engraved plate of a remarkably large shoe size, and five hand-coloured engraved plates, showing individual adult humans of an unusual size in their contemporary clothes. Contemporary blind marbled boards.= A very nicely illustrated early work on auxology, or the study of of human physical growth. The shoe size shown is that of Gerrit Bastiaansz, or the Lekkerkerkschen farmer age 21, who had size 52 (34.8 cm), which nowadays is not nearly as peculiar as it was in the early 19th century, when the average Dutchman's length was only about 163 cm, or 5'5". The size of both the "giants" and "dwarfs", however, were as extraordinary as they are today. For instance, the largest female, Trijntje Cornelisdochter Keever, stood 8 foot and one inch tall; Nicolas de Ferry, third smallest man shown, stood only 2'5" tall, both measures in Rijnlandse voeten and duimen (Rhineland feet and inches, measuring 31.4 and 2.62 cm). So Trijntje was 2.54 meter tall - she is the tallest woman who ever lived - and Nicolas was just under 76 centimetres. The illustrations are charming. Rubbing to the boards, spine a bit worn and slightly split, but holding fine, otherwise a very good, clean copy. Rare. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Kendall, Esq." to the verso of the frontispiece. There is a printing error in the pagination of the last three pages. The first is unpaginated, then 204, and 201. Charles John Gardiner, 1st Earl of Blessington, 1782 - 1829, was an Irish earl. He was elected a representative peer in 1809, created Earl of Blessington in 1816, and inherited the title of Viscount Mountjoy in 1829. Edward Augustus Kendall, d.1842, was a writer. Little is known about his life. Kendall's literary output is varied, and can be divided into four general categories, "his serious ideas and proposals for political and social reforms, for example his letters on the state of Ireland; his weekly 'popular' journalism which, ambitiously, might be described as a forerunner of Harmsworth; his translations from the French; and his children's books" -ODNB. CONDITION Rebacked in leather with the original boards, with gilt lettering and decoration to the spine.
GREENWOOD, Christopher
London,: Published by the Proprietors, W. Fowler & C. Greenwood, Wakefield, Leicester Square, Dec. 1st, 1818. DescriptionLarge engraved map on six sheets, dissected and mounted on linen, in two sections, original outline hand colour, edged in linen, housed in original quarter calf slipcase, brown marbled paper boards, lettered in gilt to spine, rubbed and scuffed. Notes The maps by Christopher and John Greenwood set new standards for large-scale surveys. They mark the boundaries of the counties, hundreds and parishes, churches and chapels, castles and quarries, farmhouses and gentlemens seats, heaths and common land, woods, parliamentary representatives and distances between towns. The price of 3 guineas each compares with the the first edition Ordnance Survey sheets of 7s 6 … [Click Below for Full Description]
