Ottley
Longman, Hurst, Rees Orme and Brown, 1818. The full title to this book is: Engravings of the Most Noble the Marquis of Stafford's collection of pictures in London, arranged according to schools and in chronological order, with remarks on each picture by William Young Ottley, Esq. F.S.A. The executive part under the management of Peltro William Tomkins, Esq., historical engraver to Her Majesty. This is the original book, subdivided in four volumes with original engravings and printed plans showing where the art was displayed in the house. Each engraving has it's own plate indent and required text as was originally produced. The book is covered in leather and has a gold stamp on the front and back. The binding is tight except that the front cover with about 10 pages attached is loose from the rest of the book and the back cover is also about to come loose. Pages have some foxing, especially on the back of some of the early pages and the leather has a lot of wear as is consistent with age. No prints have been removed though as far as I can tell. This is a truly remarkable find, a very rare and a unique piece. The book is large (elephant folio?) and heavy. It measures 16 ½" by 13" by 2 1/2" and weighs 14 ½ pounds without packaging. Bessel (Friederich Wilhelm)
Königsberg: Friedrich Nicolovius, 1818. FIRST EDITION, first gathering foxed, a few spots elsewhere, pp. xii, 325, [1], folio, contemporary half dark blue cloth, lettered in gilt on spine ('Bradley/Astronomiæ'), nineteenth-century engraved armorial bookplate of Robert Le Poer French, good. 'The positions of Bradley's stars valid for 1755 were published by Bessel as Fundamenta astronomiae pro anno 1755 (1818). This work also gives the proper motions of the stars, as derived from these observations of Bradley, of Piazzi, and of Bessel himself. It constitutes a milestone in the history of astronomical observations, for until then positions of stars could not be given with comparable accuracy: through Bessel's work, Bradley's observations were made to mark the beginning of modern astrometry. During this investigation Bessel became an admirer of the art of observation as practiced by Bradley; and because Bradley could not evaluate his own observations, Bessel followed and also taught the principle that immediately after an observation, the reduction had to be done by the observer himself. Further, he realized that the accurate determination of the motions of the planets and the stars required continuous observations of their positions until such motions could be used to predict the positions of the stars for all times with sufficient accuracy' (DSB). The name Robert Le Poer French is not found in the list of subscribers (which arranged by town: Oxford tops the list with 21 takers). Many copies went directly to libraries, and the book is quite scarce in commerce. (Norman 226) [At … [Click Below for Full Description]

Paris, P. Mongie aîné, 1818. 240 pp., large foldout map in front and foldout tables in the text Hardcover in full leather binding. Lacks the leather spine covering. Boards attached, but loosening. Later Pinckney Family bookplate on front pastedown. SIGNED by Charles Cotesworth Pinckney on title page. I've done my best to describe the book, but if you have additional questions, please don't hesitate to send me an e-mail. Charles Cotesworth Pinckney (February 25, 1746 - August 16, 1825) was an early American statesman of South Carolina, Revolutionary War veteran, and delegate to the Constitutional Convention. He was twice nominated by the Federalist Party as its presidential candidate in 1804 and 1808, losing both elections. Pinckney was born into a powerful family of aristocratic planters. He practiced law for several years and was elected to the colonial legislature. A supporter of independence from Britain, Pinckney served in the American Revolutionary War, rising to the rank of brigadier general. After the war, he won election to the South Carolina legislature, where he and his brother Thomas Pinckney represented the landed elite of the South Carolina Lowcountry. An advocate of a stronger federal government, Pinckney served as a delegate to the 1787 Philadelphia Convention, which wrote a new federal constitution. Pinckney's influence helped ensure that South Carolina would ratify the United States Constitution. Pinckney declined George Washington's first offer to serve in his administration, but in 1796 Pinckney accepted the position of Minister to France. In what became … [Click Below for Full Description]

Victor Hugo
Bon exemplaire dans une reliure moderne. HUGO, Victor Académie des jeux floraux. 1818. 1819. 1820. 1821. Keats, John
London: for Taylor and Hessey, 1818. First edition, first issue, with imprint on verso of half-title reading "Printed by T. Miller, Noble street, Cheapside." and with integral erratum leaf and inserted 5-line errata tipped-in at rear. ix, [iii], 207, [1], [4, ads dated 1 May 1818]. 8vo. Fine Copy in Boards. A near pristine copy in boards of the first edition, first issue, of the second of only three lifetime publications by Keats, comprising his longest single sustained poem, famous for its opening line: "A thing of beauty is a joy for ever." So savage and malevolent were the reviews of this poem by Blackwoods and the Quarterly--"Lockhart found it exquisitely funny that an apothecary, a fellow who confessedly knew no Greek, who had to read Homer in a translation, should venture on a classic theme" (MacGillivray)--that Keats' supporters thereafter blamed the reviewers for Keats' early death. A superb copy. MacGillivray A2; Ashley III:13; Tinker 1419; Hayward 232. Uncut in original publisher's boards, printed paper title label to spine. Minor wear to spine ends, some very light browning in places and occasional pencil underlining, slight creasing to the erratum leaf, bookplate removed from front pastedown.

Gaslicht Aktenfaszikel zur Gasbeleuchtung Wiesbadener Kasernen.
Wiesbaden -19, 1818. (33 x 20 cm). 8 Bll., davon 10 S. beschrieben. Deutsche Kursiven in schwarzer Feder auf Schweizer Papier. Fadengeheftet. [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

When ordering from the US, parcels may be subject to import tax and duty charges, which the buyer is responsible to pay. CARRIGAIN, Philip.
Concord: Philip Carrigain, 1818. Folding map, dissected and laid on linen, total 1580 x 1230mm, red marbled endpapers. Endpapers faded, paper lightly toned, pinholes in edges, a few small signs of wear. The second edition of Carrigain's important map, first published in 1816, with a large decorative title cartouche drawn by J.J. Barralet and engraved by W. Harrison, inset maps of the U.S, vignette views of the White Mountains, the 'Great Boars Head and Hampton Beach' and the 'Gap in the White Mountains' (Crawford Notch). Philip Carrigain (1772-1842) was New Hampshire secretary of state 1805-10. He commissioned surveys from every village and town in the state, often demanding corrections, handing them to Phinehas Merrill (1767-1815), a professional surveyor, to compile. Carrigain's attention to detail caused many delays and ate into his finances so much that, despite the success of the map, he was buried in an unmarked grave. His carefulness did not extend to the views around the map: the view of Crawford Notch was reversed during the engraving!
