R.J. Pothier 1818-24 Justinian Code of Law Books -22- in French 18A032 Set of 22 - 20 vols. of Justinian Law and 2 vols. of Analysis Item: Collection of 22 Books about Justinian Code of Law which is the Basis of Civil Law in Western Europe according to our research. Author: R.J. Pothier Date: First Vol. published in 1818, and the twentieth in 1823. The books have various publication dates in between so it appears to have been a progressive publication of the set. The two vol. of the Analysis have the publication date of 1824 Publisher: De L'Imprimerie de Dondey-Dupre Language: Books are in French with hand written notations in English Qty: 22 Books as mentioned, 20 of the books include the Justinian Code of Law (Vols 1-20), and Two of the books appear to be an Analysis of the law (Vols 1-2) Published in Paris France Condition: Good, considering the age the pages text is still crisp and clear. The books spines appear to be tight, and the spines and edges have soem shelf wear as shown. There is some spotting of the pages as shown in the photo examples. We also found some notation on the front pages in some of the books as shown in the photos. All of the books have the name Edward Blake which I assume was a very early owner of the set. He appears to have made the majority of the notes, so the set appeared to be used and referenced often. Perhaps Edward Blake was in the legal profession, this is unknown as the collection was purchased at auction with a large group of items. The majority of the vols. have no significant writing of notations inside of the books that we could find … [Click Below for Full Description]

RAUCH, F[rançois] A[ntoine].
Second and better edition, revised and expanded from the first edition of 1802, entitled Harmonie hydro-végétale et météorologique. One of the earliest works on ecology.Written by a French civil engineer from a viewpoint entirely in agreement with the modern ecology movement, the work argues that it is necessary to reverse the process of human destruction of the environment, particularly the worldwide destruction of forests, in order to return the planet to a state better able to support life. Rauch begins with a consideration of the relationship of forests to weather conditions, and surveys the effects of deforestation worldwide on climate and population (animal as well as human). He sets out in several chapters the steps to be taken: what sorts of vegetation should be planted and where, renewal of water sources, and the establishment of governmental departments in France and all over the globe to observe the environment and to take action. He urges the agencies, for example, to consider changes over short periods of time, and to attempt regulation of factory fuel sources. In his closing argument he urges the obligation "to conserve the noble economy," and "to conserve that from which we benefit." Régénération de la nature végétale should be considered one of the pioneering works in the field, perhaps the earliest to sound so many themes of importance today.

MONTAIGNE Essais.

[Orphan Children record in the 19th century] [Niños Expósitos, Montevideo].
[1818-58]. Folio. ff. 323. Contemporary stiff vellum, with the title in ink on the front board and a paper label on the spine. Slightly soiled and joints splitting but otherwise in good, honest condition.- A unique manuscript register of the newly-born orphans abandoned and taken in at La Inclusa, an orphanage established in Montevideo in 1818 and housed in the Hospital de Caridad (from 1825 in a new building, today's Hospital Maciel). The manuscript begins with the date of the orphanage's inception and ends in the year (1857) in which a yellow fever epidemic devestated Montevideo bringing about the removal of the orphanage to outside the city limits. An annotation on the front fly leaf and first page attests to the authenticity of the volume, noting 'La autentidad y fée de este Libro está plenamente certificada á su fecha veinte y nueve buelto. Montev[ide]o, Abril 3 de 1822. Man[ue]l. de Castillo', below this is also the signature of Miguel Antonio Blandebo, 'Hermano Mayor' in the orphanage. It includes detailed descriptions of the first 1,215 babies taken into the orphanage and their subsequent fates. The stories it tells are frequently harrowing. Celia Antonia, for example, was taken in on 23 May 1857 at about seven in the evening through the orphans' turntable (a wooden window in which you placed the baby and turned the wheel so that the baby would be moved inside, an example remains in the Casa de la Misericordia in Barcelona). She came with a baptism certificate and a note stating that she would be collected when possible though, tragically, a later annotation … [Click Below for Full Description]

Wilhelm, G. T.
Wien, the "Herausgeber", 1818. 8vo (18.1 x 11.1 cm). Frontispiece, [xvi], 328 pp., 40 hand-coloured plates with 70 images. Contemporary tree-calf resembling paper covered boards. Spine with gilt lines, vignette, and red morocco label with gilt title. Edges dyed yellow. Part of a large series, but the only volume dealing with amphibians and reptiles, including snakes and turtles. As usual with German publications from this era, "Amphibien" refers to reptiles too. Written by the German dean, father and teacher Gottlieb Tobias Wilhelm (1758-1811). The vast majority of the attractive illustrations are well-coloured; a few are, deliberately, merely tinted in one or two colours. This edition was published after Wilhelm's death by the "Herausgeber". Boards rubbed at the edges, spine with a vertical crack, binding a bit weak; a few text pages a bit spotted, some plates with some thumbing in the lower margin, but in all still a nice, complete copy with text and plates clean. Adler III, pp. 50-51; Crane Library, AC9 (first ed. ), AC11 (other ed. ); Nissen ZBI, 4408. Very good. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Leopardi, Giacomo
Roma, presso Francesco Bourlie’, 1818 [MDCCCXVIII], Edizione originale. [Click Below for Full Description]

BESSEL, Friedrich Wilhelm.
Friedrich Nicolovius, Königsberg. A fine copy of this work which "constitutes a milestone in the history of astronomical observations, for until then positions of stars could not be given with comparable accuracy: through Bessel’s work, Bradley’s observations were made to mark the beginning of modern astrometry" (Walter Fricke in DSB). Norman 226; Honeyman 311."In 1807 Olbers encouraged [Bessel] to do a reduction of Bradley’s observations of the positions of 3,222 stars, which had been made from 1750 to 1762 at the Royal Greenwich Observatory. This task led to one of his greatest achievements . "Bessel recognized that Bradley’s observations gave a system of very accurate star positions for the epoch 1755 and that this could be utilized in two ways. First, a reference system for the measurement of positions of stars and planets was required. Second, the study of star motions necessitated the determination of accurate positions for the earliest possible epoch. Tobias Mayer had determined fundamental star positions from his own observations around the middle of the eighteenth century, but Bradley was never able to reduce his own numerous observations. "The observations of star positions had to be freed of instrumental errors, insofar as these could be determined from the measurements themselves, and of errors caused by the earth’s atmosphere (refraction). The apparent star positions at the time of a particular observation (observation epoch) had to be reduced to a common point in time (mean epoch) so that they would be freed of the effects of the motion of the earth and of the … [Click Below for Full Description]

Regiomonti (Königsberg), Frid. Nicolovium, 1818. Folio. Near contemp. hcalf. Gilt spine with gilt lettering. A small nick at upper backhinge. (12),325,(1) pp. Light scattered brownspots. Top of title-page with old owners name and a small stamp. First edition of this milestone work in astronomical obeservation, where Bessel reduced the observations for the "personal equation" based on Bradley's observations and here published Bradley's Greenwich observations for the first time and making a catalogue of 3222 stars extracted from them."The positions of Bradley’s stars valid for 1755 were published by Bessel as Fundamenta astronomiae pro anno 1755 (1818). This work also gives the proper motions of the stars, as derived from these observations of Bradley, of Piazzi, and of Bessel himself. It constitutes a milestone in the history of astronomical observations, for until then positions of stars could not be given with comparable accuracy: through Bessel’s work, Bradley’s observations were made to mark the beginning of modern astrometry. During this investigation Bessel became an admirer of the art of observation as practiced by Bradley; and because Bradley could not evaluate his own observations, Bessel followed and also taught the principle that immediately after an observation, the reduction had to be done by the observer himself. Further, he realized that the accurate determination of the motions of the planets and the stars required continuous observations of their positions until such motions could be used to predict "the positions of the stars . for all times with sufficient … [Click Below for Full Description]

Cobbett, William
Clayton and Kingsland, 1818. Condition: Collectible, Good. New York, 1818. 12mo, contemporary calf, 184 pp. The scarce first edition of Cobbett's important work, printed in an edition of 5,000. A good copy in a contemporary calf binding. Sizable chip to calf at head of spine, hinges superficially cracked but holding, contemporary ownership signature to front free endpaper (dated in 1818), normal foxing to pages. An important work. "Having taken a lease on a Long Island farm, Cobbett lived a quieter life than during his first American sojourn, but he continued the Political Register from abroad as well as writing more books and tracts, most notably the agricultural treatise A Year's Residence in the United States of America (1818) and his widely selling Grammar of the English Language (1818). This latter work, which Cobbett saw as a testament to the intellectual capacity of himself and of the common people as a whole, was intended especially for the use of soldiers, sailors, apprentices, and plough-boys; accordingly Cobbett cheekily drew his examples of faulty grammar from the writings and speeches of such renowned political leaders as the duke of Wellington, Lord Castlereagh, and George III himself. The English Grammar continued to be used in English schools into the 1920s and 1930s." - Oxford DNB. Please contact us for additional pictures or information. [Attributes: First Edition]

Original envelope as presented. Early imprint from the Wesleyan Mission Press. The British Methodist Mission to Ceylon was initiated by Dr. Thomas Coke. Together with seven other missionaries he left Portsmouth in December 1813. Coke himself died on board the ship but in June 1814 the other missionaries arriving at Galle (southern tip of Ceylon). The Wesleyans acquired the presses and equipment of the Colombo Auxiliary Bible Society in 1816 and started to print publications under William Martin Harvard's supervision. (Ref. Nigel Seeley). The original envelope has an inscription (in an early 20th century hand) reading: "For Mrs. H. W. Hill's Museum with P.W. Robert's compliments. The enclosed is in all probability the first specimen of printing done at the Wesleyan Mission Press Colombo and is exceedingly rare". However the first known works printed by the Wesleyan Mission Press are dated 1817 (see Clair). It means that this little book cannot be the very first specimen but one of the earliest pieces printed at the press. Edited from the original manuscript by Scottish antiquary and artist, Charles Kirkpatrick Sharpe. This is the first Sharpe edition of Law's work and the first time that this work was published. It is believed that Sharpe edited and published this work to discredit Wodrow and the Presbyterians at the time. However, Sharpe had a keen interest in Witchcraft which led to this editorial.
