[CHARTER-HOUSE]
[] ~ SHAKESPEARE AT CHARTERHOUSE [CHARTER-HOUSE] [Six volumes of school lists, each featuring Latin, Greek and English prize poetry] [Surrey?]. [vs.]. [1818-31], . 8vo. Six volumes; 1818-21 ([52]; 32; 32; 44pp). 1828 (41pp, 1), 1831 (35pp, [1]). The final two issues printed by Valpy of London, the others unsigned. Stitched, as issued, some with blue paper wrappers. Some loss, one volume without wrappers entirely. Some dog-earring, occasional marking. A rare survival of a six decidedly ephemeral senior-form and later full school-lists from the Surrey public school Charterhouse, each with several pieces of prize poetry included in Latin, Greek and English; some signed, others anonymous. One running theme in these collections of verse is Shakespeare - with either an English extract from the Bard opposite a Greek translation or a poem inspired by his works included in each. Notable Old Carthusians included amongst the school lists are a young John Murray (the third) (III Form, 1821) and William Makepeace Thackeray (I Form, 1828). ~ About Antiquates We're based in the heart of the Dorset countryside, with an antiquarian bookshop in Wareham, housed within a beautiful Grade II Listed Georgian Building, we also travel far and wide to buy, sell and advise on rare books. GREENLAND WHALE FISHERY, British Acts of Parliament]
John Baskett [and others], printers, London, 1818. (12 1/2 x 8 inches, and smaller). Disbound or stitched A fascinating series spanning the whole of the period when whaling was carried out on a successful commercial basis in the waters off Greenland. After an abortive start by the South Sea Company between 1724 and 1732, the British whaling fleet operated off Greenland and the Davis Strait throughout the remainder of the 18th century, with increasing success due to a large degree to the succession of bounties granted to ship owners by the British Government. The present selection of acts of parliament includes a number concerning the bounty: the first, dated 16th January 1732 makes law "that a Bounty [will] be paid on the Return of every Ship [of 200 tons and over] imployed by His Majesty's Subjects in the Whale Fishery". For the bounty to be paid, certain stringent criteria had to be met; these increased as the century progressed. By the time of the last Act in the present group (March 1818) the Greenland whalers were reporting declining catches and were already beginning to turn their attention to other whaling grounds, i.e. largely in the Pacific and Antarctic. This group offers and interesting series of snapshots of the industry during its most productive century. The acts comprise: 1. An Act for encouraging the Greenland Fishery. 1732. Stitched, later wrappers. Exemption from duty extended for a nine year period. 2. An Act for the further Encouragment of the Whale Fishery carried on by His Majesty's British Subjects. 1733. Stitched, later wrappers. The introduction of … [Click Below for Full Description]

The original owner, Pumpelly (1795 - 1882) is described as follows in a historical website on Schenectady and region: 'He was an omniverous reader, and from every book he gleaned some useful knowledge, laying it by for future service. Among other accomplishments of a practical kind he gained a knowledge of surveying, and at the age of twenty-one was found in that occupation in connection with his brother James, who had charge of the extensive Harper and Caton estates in the vicinity of Tioga county, New York. His energy of character and spirit of enterprise soon led him beyond the routine of surveying. He threw into everything he did his habits of promptness, forethought and integrity, and almost everything he touched prospered. Much of his time in those years having been occupied as land agent for several large capitalists of New York City, he began the purchase and sale of lands on his own account, and thus laid the foundation of his large fortune. (Joints partly split, loss of paper at foot of spine, corners bumped and a few marks). Gilson A9. Volume I only, but in the original boards, with uncut edges. As on A. Edward Newton's copy the price of "24"s was cut away from the foot of the spine label, and Gilson notes that this practice was also found in the case of copies of the first edition of Emma. Some light and inoffensive foxing or spotting and two small wormholes in the inner margin from p.189 to the end. A sewing pin has been attached to pp.ix-xii and a slip of paper with ink blottings has been inserted as a bookmark between pp.178 and179. Austen's final published work, pairing her last completed novel with the light-spirited satire that was probably the first full-length novel she wrote. Her brother Henry's biographical notice, dated 13 December 1817, is the first acknowledgement in print of Jane as the author of the six novels. [Attributes: First Edition]

GILBERT BURNETT
LONDON: J. NUNN, 1818. These 4 volumes are in excellent condition for being almost 200 years old. The boards and spine are strong and there is little or no foxing. The books editor was Thomas Burnet, son of Gilbert. Gilbert Burnet (18 September 1643 - 17 March 1715) was a Scottish philosopher and historian, and Bishop of Salisbury. He way always closely associated with the Whig party, and was one of the few close friends in whom King William III confided.Going to London he gained the favor of Charles II. During the Popish Plot when lQueen Catherine was accused of treason, (it was alleged that she had conspired to murder her husband), the King confided to Burnet his feelings of guilt about his ill treatment of the Queen "who is incapable of doing a wicked thing".Burnet was an intimate of the English court from the time of King Charles II through the reign of Queen Anne, or from 1660 through 1713. These volumes contain his inside knowledge of the royal decisions of that period, during peace and war. Please email me with any questions.

Pietro, Dominique di
Paris: L'Huillier, 1818. Paris: L'Huillier. Good with no dust jacket. 1818. First Edition. Hardcover. This is the rare and important first edition of di Pietro's historic conquest of Egypt, complete with folding map of Egypt. This first edition was published only 3 years after Napoleon's final defeat and exile, and is much sought after by collectors of Napoleonic and Egyptian history. It includes two curious book ownership stamps on the inside blank -- two nine-pointed crowns, under one there appear to be two fleur de lys and two lions rampant. They might be indications of a royal or ecclesiastical provenance from the Restoration era .This book is hardcover, in good antiquarian condition, complete, 8 ¼” by 5”, 340 pages. The binding is firm, pages are clean and unmarked, map with a slight fold, and a slight tear at one fold, map otherwise beautifully preserved, the hardcover with paper covers are firm, but the boards have scuffing, the leather spine is scuffed with leather wear and gilt design losses but the leather spine label is intact with only a small chip, gilt lettering clear. All in all, a quite handsome example of a Napoleonic era Egyptian historical rarity -- a vivid account of the conquest of and voyages in Egypt by the French; an early account of the “opening” of Egypt to the West. Note en francais: c'est l'édition originale, de 1818, avec la carte repliee. This is an important account -- one of the first --- of the Napoleonic conquest of Egypt. It includes vivid accounts of Eygpt, and of course Napoleon and his two famous generals: … [Click Below for Full Description]

First edition of the first overview of the Kurdish region and about their customs." Although Italian contacts with Iran date from ancient times, scientific interest in pre-Islamic Iran cannot be traced earlier than the second half of the eighteenth century. Among the earlier studies on pre-Islamic Iran, the contribution by the Arabist Carlo Alfonso Nallino (1872-1938) is particularly stimulating. He profoundly studied the translation movement in the caliphate period and the character of Ebn al-Moqaffa? Giuseppe Campanile (1762-1835) was one of the earliest Europeans who travelled through the Kurdish region. When he was sent to northern Iraq in 1802 by the Roman Catholic Church he spent few years among the population of Mosul and he was named as the Apolistic Prefect of Mesopotamia and Kurdistan. During this time, he wrote his book "Storia della Regione del Kurdistan" (History of the Region of Kurdistan). Beside recalling historical events of the region, the work is a description of the areas he travelled through, giving the reader an inside look at the customs, traditions and costumes of the Kurds; the geography, the economy and … [Click Below for Full Description]

Ottley
Longman, Hurst, Rees Orme and Brown, 1818. The full title to this book is: Engravings of the Most Noble the Marquis of Stafford's collection of pictures in London, arranged according to schools and in chronological order, with remarks on each picture by William Young Ottley, Esq. F.S.A. The executive part under the management of Peltro William Tomkins, Esq., historical engraver to Her Majesty. This is the original book, subdivided in four volumes with original engravings and printed plans showing where the art was displayed in the house. Each engraving has it's own plate indent and required text as was originally produced. The book is covered in leather and has a gold stamp on the front and back. The binding is tight except that the front cover with about 10 pages attached is loose from the rest of the book and the back cover is also about to come loose. Pages have some foxing, especially on the back of some of the early pages and the leather has a lot of wear as is consistent with age. No prints have been removed though as far as I can tell. This is a truly remarkable find, a very rare and a unique piece. The book is large (elephant folio?) and heavy. It measures 16 ½" by 13" by 2 1/2" and weighs 14 ½ pounds without packaging. Bessel (Friederich Wilhelm)
Königsberg: Friedrich Nicolovius. FIRST EDITION, first gathering foxed, a few spots elsewhere, pp. xii, 325, [1], folio, contemporary half dark blue cloth, lettered in gilt on spine ('Bradley/Astronomiæ'), nineteenth-century engraved armorial bookplate of Robert Le Poer French, good. 'The positions of Bradley's stars valid for 1755 were published by Bessel as Fundamenta astronomiae pro anno 1755 (1818). This work also gives the proper motions of the stars, as derived from these observations of Bradley, of Piazzi, and of Bessel himself. It constitutes a milestone in the history of astronomical observations, for until then positions of stars could not be given with comparable accuracy: through Bessel's work, Bradley's observations were made to mark the beginning of modern astrometry. During this investigation Bessel became an admirer of the art of observation as practiced by Bradley; and because Bradley could not evaluate his own observations, Bessel followed and also taught the principle that immediately after an observation, the reduction had to be done by the observer himself. Further, he realized that the accurate determination of the motions of the planets and the stars required continuous observations of their positions until such motions could be used to predict the positions of the stars for all times with sufficient accuracy' (DSB). The name Robert Le Poer French is not found in the list of subscribers (which arranged by town: Oxford tops the list with 21 takers). Many copies went directly to libraries, and the book is quite scarce in commerce. (Norman 226) [Attribut … [Click Below for Full Description]
