        The Jewish Preceptress.

London N. Archer printer 1818 - First edition. Duodecimo (18 x 11.5 cm), 94, [2] pp., contemporary blind-tooled leather boards, edged in gilt with Greek key border (oxidised), spine gilt in compartments with gilt lettering, light wear to edges. A very good, clean copy. First edition of a rare conduct manual "written chiefly for the use of the female children, educated at the Jews' Hospital" in London. Published anonymously by a Jewish woman, this book emphasises the importance of Jewish religious education as the key to the persistence of Jewish life and morality. Similarly to Moses Mendelssohn the author uses a secular language, English, for the religious education of Jewish girls. In doing so she renders Jewish morality more widely available and easily accessible. The book offers practical, moral and religious guidance to the girls of the Jews Hospital, many of whom went on to work as domestic servants in Jewish families. Founded in 1806, the Jews Hospital at Mile End was a charitable institution that served as a home for the elderly and as a school for poor Jewish children, as well as for male and female juveniles. Those who went there for rehabilitation were called "inmates". Their parents had to be members of one of the three major London synagogues (the Great, the Hambro or the New) and to have been born in London or lived there for the past ten years. Thus recent immigrants and homeless were not accepted - the school was established for the children of the "respectable" poor. The book is dedicated to the president of the institution – Samuel Joseph, Esq., this copy also bears the engraved heraldic bookplate of the financier and Jewish community leader Sir Moses Haim Montefiore (1784-1885). Not traced in Roth, Magna Bibliotheca Anglo-Judaica. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

THE LAWS OF THE ISLAND OF ANTIGUA...VOL. I[-III]

London, 1818. Three volumes. [8],lxvii,584; [4],xx,636; [4],xxvii,467pp. Quarto. Modern buckram, gilt leather labels. Library ink stamps and contemporary ownership inscription on titlepages. Light dampstaining, particularly to first leaves of second volume. Tape repair to p.301 in first volume. Light scattered foxing throughout. Good. The laws of the island of Antigua from 1668 through 1817, also including the laws of the Leeward Islands from 1690 to 1798. Antigua, colonized by the British in the mid- 17th century, served as a major sugar producer and hub for shipping in the West Indies. The laws include those governing titles to lands, numerous regulations on slaves, and duties on sugar and molasses produced on the island. The American Revolutionary War caused a significant disruption in the sugar trade, and British sentiment against slavery further served to shift the economy of the island in the late 18th century. These laws were originally issued as a two volume set in 1805, though the third volume followed in 1818 and is noted as Volume III on the titlepage, covering the period from 1805 to 1818. An important set of laws governing a major British sugar colony in the West Indies.

Ezrat HaSofer; Hamisha Humshey Torah; Tikun Sofrim, Vavei Ha'amudim. [Pentateuch with Or Torah glosses].

Vienna Georg Holzinger 1818 - Five volumes, octavo (19 x 12.5 cm). Vol I - title, [18 ll.], 79 ll.; Vol II - title, [1 l.], 86 ll.; Vol. III - title, 67 ll.; Vol. IV - title, 75 ll.; title, 70 ll. Text in Hebrew, with Ladino preface by Yisrael Haim. Contemporary brown calf with gilt floral and pomegranate patterns in oriental style and the name "Chaim" embossed on front cover of volumes III and V., signature "Chaim" to some of the title pages. Overall good condition, some stains and wear. Preserved in a modern slipcase. Sephardic pentateuch published in Vienna by Yisrael Haim of Belgrade - the pioneer of Ladino printing in Vienna and "champion of the Ladino translation tradition in the 19th century". (David M. Bunis, Histoire, Epistomologie, Langage) Yisrael Haim was born in the second half of the 18th century in Belgrade; following the invasion of the Dahijas in 1813 Haim was forced to flee Serbia and later settled in Vienna. Here he published most of his works and dedicated his whole life to his literary efforts and to serving the community. Through the first few decades of the 1800s Haim published many sacred Hebrew books such as prayer-books, pentateuchs, moralistic works and others. His translations were intended not just for the Sephardic community in Vienna, but for Ladino speakers worldwide - to the descendants of medieval Spanish Jewry. Living side by side with the Ashkenazic community in Vienna and inspired by presses that published Yiddish works Haim began to publish Ladino reeditions and new translations of Medieval Sephardic Hebrew classics. One of Haim's main concerns was the lack of knowledge of Hebrew among the Jewish youth. Inspired by prenumerantem system employed among the Ashkenazic community Haim offered wealthy members of his community the opportunity to sponsor his publication in return for their name to be recorded in the work, as can be seen in this publication's title page: "Brought to Print by dear honourable lord Eliezer Ben Menachem HaCohen".

Fine engraved frontis., two engraved plates, & four folding printed tables. 342 pp. 8vo, cont. fine dark blue sheep maroquiné (extremities a trifle rubbed), sides with gilt filet, flat spine richly gilt, red morocco lettering piece on spine, a.e.g. Prague: G. Haase, 1818. First edition; a very fine and handsome copy printed on thick paper and bound in contemporary dark blue sheep maroquiné, gilt. Reuss (1761-1830), took his medical degree in 1783 and established a practice at Prague; during the same period he also conducted mineralogical and geological investigations and went to Freiberg to hear Werner lecture at the Bergakademie. He wrote an important geological textbook which contained the most complete exposition of Werner's ideas. "In 1784 Reuss became physician to Prince Lobkowitz and moved to the northwestern Bohemian city of Bilin…Bilin was already famous as a spa, and Reuss, in addition to his medical duties, supervised the exploitation of the mineral springs and mines belonging to his patron. In this connection he continued his mineralogical and geological researches and concurrently began an investigation of the spas of northern Bohemia."-D.S.B., XI, p. 387. Reuss provides here a very full description of the mineral springs and a chemical analysis of the waters at Marienbad (now Mariánské Lázne) in today's Czech Republic. These waters are rich in sulphate of soda and carbonate of soda. The attractive frontispiece depicts the town (which consists mostly of hotels) and the other two plates show the Kreuzbrunne and Karolinenquelle. Two old library stamps of Prague religious houses on title.

A most important association; formerly the property of Admiral Gordon (1782-1869), a key sailor of his era and a five-star naval officer appointed Admiral of the Fleet, the highest rank of the British Royal Navy. During an illustrious career at the time of Britain's maritime dominance, he served under Lord Nelson and was directly involved in several major campaigns including the French Revolutionary Wars, The Anglo-Spanish War, The War of 1812, and The Napoleonic Wars. He is cited as the inspiration for C.S. Forester's heroic character Horatio Hornblower and in 1997 historian Bryan Perret chronicled his life and times under the title 'The Real Hornblower' (Pen and Sword Publishing). Gordon fought, commanded and was victorious in numerous major battles and actions including The Battle of the Glorious First of June (1794), Battle of Cape St Vincent (1797), The Blockade of Cadiz (1808), The Battle of Lissa (1811), The Blockade of France (1812), The Raid of Alexandra/Potomac River (1814), The Battle of Baltimore (1814), The Attack on Fort Henry (1814) and The Battle of New Orleans (1815). From 1811 onwards Gordon used a wooden leg as a result of a canonball hit during the Battle of Palagruza, and after the cessation of hostilities he held a number of superior posts including Superintendent of the Naval Hospital at Plymouth, Superintendent of Chatham Dockyard and Governor of Greenwich Hospital. Marking his exceptional and distinguished record, he was appointed Admiral of the Fleet in 1868 and is buried at Greenwich close to the entrance of the National Maritime Museum. An obituary published 3rd June 1869 hailed him as "The Last of Nelson's Captains".

Lång tråkigt lagad reva i registerbladet s.

Manuscript - Court Martial Document - Trial and Sentencing of Private Thomas Smith for Deserting His Regiment - Escaping Imprisonment - Sent to Australia Penal Colony

Trinidad, 1818. Port of Spain, Trinidad, 3-8 September 1818. Manuscript Court Martial proceedings which took place at the Orange Grove Barracks, for the trial and sentencing of Private Thomas Smith for deserting his regiment, and, after being apprehended, escaping imprisonment. Folio. 7 pages of text on two double leafs, laid watermarked paper made by Molineux Johnston in 1813, measuring approximately 32 x 20 cm. Signed in the original by three significant parties involved in the trial, including Governor of Barbados, Lord Combermere. Some splitting at folds, otherwise in very good condition, a rare and fascinating primary source account of an Australian penal colony convict. Private Thomas Smith, alias John Jackson (1791-1866), was a convict assigned to Captain Thomas H. Baylis's Company of the Royal York Rangers in 1816. [The Royal York Rangers was formed in 1807 from condemned men, mostly British and Irish prisoners desperate to escape hanging, and also with drafts from the Royal African Corps. Despite this eclectic grouping, it was an extremely effective regiment.] At the risk of receiving lashes and extended sentencing, Smith dared to abandon his imposed commitment of penance and army duty, and fleed the regiment. According to this court document, dated 3 September 1818, he was captured near Arima, Trinidad, in July, having been quartered at Saint Joseph with the regiment, until his desertion. He was tried in Trinidad. The hearing addressed three charges against him, first for desertion from the regiment, also for the crime of leaving with 'Regimental Necessaries', and, after being apprehended, for subsequently escaping from prison captivity. He was found 'Guilty' on all three counts and sentenced as "Felon for Life" to be transported to an un unnamed location. The jury consisted of 14 men of various military regiments. The document further reveals that he had joined the regiment in England in on 14 December 1816. As mentioned in the introduction to the proceeding, the warrant for Smith's arrest and conviction, was issued by the Governor of Barbados himself Stapleton Cotton, 1st Viscount Combermere GCB GCH KSI PC (1773-1865), who held the post from 1817 to 1820. Governor Combermere also signed the document in his hand. The present document appears to be the earliest record of this felon. Following this hearing and conviction, he must have been successfully held until he was transported to a penal colony in Australia one year later. Docketing inscriptions to verso of the second leaf indicate that these papers were sent to the Commander In Chief on 27 January 1819. [According to historical naval records and colonial secretary's correspondence, Smith would arrive at Sydney, then a penal colony, on the ship 'Malabar' along with 169 other exiles on 30 October 1819 and from there was sent to Emu Plains. Commanded by Captain William Ascough, the ship safely delivered 170 male prisoners, 32 soldiers including the guard, 9 women and 6 children. The prisoners were landed in good health and with their rations on 5 November. They were immediately distributed to Parramatta, Windsor, Liverpool and Emu Plains. In the years to follow, Smith was charged with theft and disorderly conduct, worked as part of an iron gang from which he also escaped on several occasions, was sent to Port Macquarie to work for the government, then to Norfolk Island, was transferred to Cockatoo Island, and died in 1857 at age 66 after living an active life as a felon and convict.] Smith must have embarked on the Malabar in Trinidad, as he was already stationed on the island as early as July 1818 after deserting his convict regiment. Though detailed information is limited, and ship registers are scant, Smith evidently left England sometime between 14 December 1816 when he joined the Royal York Rangers and early 1818 when he was posted in Trinidad. Three notable individuals involved in this case have signed the last page of this document in the original: The Governor of Barbados from 1817 to 1820, Stapleton Cotton, 1st Viscount Combermere GCB GCH KSI PC (1773-1865), a British diplomat, politician, and Army officer who commanded a cavalry brigade in Sir Arthur Wellesley's Army before being given overall command of the cavalry in the latter stages of the Peninsular War. Lieutenant Colonel William Smelt, from the 103d Foot, who was the President for this trial. [Possible descendant of Leonard Smelt of Kirkby Fleetham, Yorkshire, who was the Receiver General of casual revenue, Barbados, from 1745 until his death in 1755.] Lieutenant and Adjutant William Firebrace, whose role was Deputy Judge Advocate in this trial. [He obtained the rank of Major in 1836, retired in 1841, and died on the Isle of Wight in 1856] Following are som excerpts from the document: "Proceedings of a General Court Martial held by Virtue of a Warrant bearing date Head Quarters Barbados 30th July 1818, from his Excellency the Right Honorable Lord Combermere G.C.B. [Governor General Barbados], Commander of His Majesty's Forces in the Windward and Leeward Islands - " "Trinidad, Orange Grove Barracks, 3rd September 1818." "Prisoner Private Thomas Smith alias John Jackson... was called into Court... was then asked if he had any objection to the President or any Members... he had not... the charges preferred against him as follows..." "For deserting from his Regiment on or about the 12th July last, and not returning until apprehended and brought back a Prisoner by a Party of Indians or Spaniards on or about the 14th July following." "For having when he Deserted taken with him all his Regimental Necessaries." "For making his Escape when a Prisoner, and again Deserting on or about the 15th July following, and not returning until apprehended by a Party of the Regiment on or about the 28th August following." "To which the Prisoner pleaded Not Guilty..." "The Court... proceeded to examine the Evidences...." "... on the Morning of 12th July [1818], two of the Prisoner's Messmates informed him [Captain Thomas Bayliss] that the Prisoner had deserted..." "Manuel Pena an Indian resident in the Island being solemnly sworn thro' an Interpreter... answers the following questions... Where did you apprehend him? In the Cocoa Market of Mr. Strickland's Plantation near Arima" How far is this from Port of Spain? About six hours walk. "Serjeant Andrew Honan... deposes as follows... Do you know if he had any Necessaries? I know he had, as I have seen them Inspected." "George Lemon a Discharged Soldier from the Royal York Rangers being called into court... Was the Prisoner under your charge as a Prisoner? He was.... At 1/2 past 7 Oclock in the evening I locked up the Prisoner as well as the rest... but at 5 Oclock next morning when I went to the place where the Prisoners were confined, I found that the Prisoner had effected his escape by digging under the door of his cell and had by that means got out." "Private Michael Dunn... Were you on the Gaol Guard on the 15th July last? I was." "Private Anthony Jones... Were you one of a Party who apprehended the Prisoner on or about the 28th August last? I was... I found him in a Liquor store in the Town..." "Serjeant William Godman... Did you ever see the Prisoner previous to this... from England with the last Draft of Recruits? I did... He [Thomas Smith] joined the Regiment with me on 14th December 1816..." "The Prisoner declines making any defences and throws himself on the mercy of the Court." "The Court having thus found the Prisoner Guilty of the whole of the Charges exhibited against him... Prisoner Private Thomas Smith alias John Jackson... Royal York Rangers, to be Transported as a Felon for Life" Signed "Wm Smelt, Lt. Colonel R. York Rangers, President" Signed "Approved. Combermere SC., Commr. of the Forces." Signed "Will. Firebrace,... 8 September 1818" End Excerpts. . Very Good.
