Bland bidragsgivarna märks bl.a. Geijer, Almquist och Atterbom

Sammandragen. Sthlm, C. Deleen, 1818. 4:o. (4),37 s.

London: T Cadell & W Davies, 1818.. Illustrated by Robert Smirke. First Thus. Leather Bound. Very Good. PUBLISHING DETAILS: First edition thus of Cervantes masterpiece, published in four volumes by T Cadell & W Davies of London in 1818. Size; 24 x 15 cms (9.5" x 6"). Weight; 4.21 kilos (10 pounds 9 ounces) N.B. additional shipping costs will apply. 1744 pages, all edges gilt. 48 plates by Robert Smirke. CONDITION: I would rate this set as very good. The full Moroccan leather covers, with gilt tooling and titles and 5 raised bands to the spines, are generally sound and clean, though with some splitting to the top fore-edges of the spines to vols 1, 3 & 4 and bruising to the corners. The bindings remain tight and secure throughout save for surface cracking to the inner hinges. The text and illustrations are generally clean and bright, with some light foxing here and there, light offsetting from the plates and slight staining to the inner bottom corners of some of the plates (not affecting the illustrations). The endpapers are lightly foxed but free from labels or inscriptions. The gilt edges to the page blocks are particularly good, with just light dusting to the top edge. All in all, this is a very handsome early edition of this cornerstone of western literature. THE NOVEL: Don Quixote has become so entranced by reading romances of chivalry that he determines to become a knight errant and pursue bold adventures, accompanied by his squire, the cunning Sancho Panza. As they roam the world together, the aging Quixote's fancy leads them wildly astray, tilting at windmills, fighting with friars, and distorting the rural Spanish landscape into a fantasy of impenetrable fortresses and wicked sorcerers. At the same time the relationship between the two men grows in fascinating subtlety. Often considered to be the first modern novel, Don Quixote is a wonderful burlesque of the popular literature its disordered protagonist is obsessed with. Miguel de Cervantes's mock-epic masterwork was voted the greatest book of all time by the Nobel Institute. The 48 plates and occasional vignettes are by the English painter and illustrator Robert Smirke (1752-1845), whose daughter, Mary, translated this edition. Smirke's pictures were usually of small size and painted in monochrome, as being best adapted for engraving. As well as Don Quixote, he provided illustrations for the Bible, 'The Picturesque Beauties of Shakespeare' (1783), Johnson's 'Rasselas' (1805), 'Gil Blas' (1809), the 'Arabian Nights' (1811), 'Adventures of Hunchback' (1814) and the British poets, especially Thomson. His works are characterised by good drawing, refinement, and quiet humour. (Source: Wikipedia)

Seven Documents pertaining to Drawbacks for cargo shipped by John Jacob Astor in 1819 and 1821

The first set of four documents, dated 1818 and 1819, pertains to drawbacks requested for the shipment of eight cases of guns from Amsterdam, through New York, for the “North West Coast of America.” The guns were received on board the brig Carolina in New York in 1818 by an attorney representing Vasques, Manson & Cleeman, and I like to think they were bound for Chile and Bernardo O’Higgins’ new republic. In any event, one of the four documents is signed twice by Astor’s son William B. Astor, and once in New York as “John Jacob Astor & Son” in a handwriting that looks a great deal like John Jacob Astor’s own signature. The other three documents pertain to drawbacks requested for the shipment of “two hundred bales of camlets” (a valuable fabric) to Canton. This group is signed once by William B. Astor and again bears the “John Jacob Astor & Son” in what could very possibly be Astor’s signature. The firm of Astor and Son was formed to engage in the China trade, and was managed by William B. The lot

1818. BARTON,William P.C. VEGETABLE MATERIA MEDICA OF THE UNITED STATES; OR MEDICAL BOTANY: CONTAINING A BOTANICAL, GENERAL, AND MEDICAL HISTORY, OF MEDICINAL PLANTS INDIGENOUS TO THE UNITED STATES. Volume I. [& II.] Philadelphia: H. C. Carey & I. Lea, 1825-1818. A mixed set: second edition of volume one, printed seven years after the first, and a first edition of volume two. Illustrated with 50 colored engravings (24 in Vol. 1 + 26 in Vol. 2) after drawings by the author, including one folding plate. There is a note `to subscribers' page, with an erratum, at the end of Vol. 1., and a 'list of subscribers' at the end of Vol. 2. Two quarto volumes rebound to period in 1/4 maroon leather and marbled boards. Ex library, the only mark being ink and perforated stamps on title-pages and in a few other places in text, not effecting plates. The plates are clean and bright, and unmarked, despite scant light foxing to some tissue guards. A lovely set. Barton (1785-1856) was a botanist, teacher and naval surgeon. He studied medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. After completing his medical studies he was appointed naval surgeon in 1809. In 1815 he was appointed Professor of Botany at the University of Pennsylvania, where he led herborizing expeditions along the Schuylkill River. But he remained on the Navy's rolls all his life: In 1842 he was ordered by Navy Department to Washington and became the first of the chiefs of the Bureau of Medicine and Surgery and, in 1852 was president of the Board of Medical Examiners. In Fuligno, Presso Gio. Tomassini, 1818.

In 12, [mm. 146 x 78], pp. 257 ? (5).

Hérissant le Doux, Imprimeur ordinaire du Roi 1818 [-1820], First edition. Some occasional light marginal foxing to parts of text, verso of some plates are lightly browned, heavier browning or spotting to six plates only, calf binding with slight edge wear and a few old mars, a tight, clean copy in very good condition in an attractive period binding.. Pp. (iv), 280, with 109 fine stipple-engraved plates printed in colors and finished by hand, with occasional touches of gum arabic, after Poiteau, by V. Bonnefoi, Chailly, Dien, Gabriel, Legrand, T. Susémihl and Texier. Contemporary light brown calf, neatly rebacked with spine laid on, the covers with a wide decorative border elaborately tooled in gilt and blind, the spine in six compartments with raised bands, black morocco lettering-piece in the second compartment, the others with repeat overall tooling, gilt turn-ins, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt, folio (338 x 252 mm). The title displays the wood-engraved arms of the Duchesse de Berry; there is a two page dedication to the Duchesse de Berry in the frontis matter. A very important monograph on citrus fruit; the work depicts an amazing variety of oranges, limes, lemons and the precursor of the grapefruit - many images show the complete fruit as well as the cross-section. It was this work that Sacheverell Sitwell, writing in Great Flower Books (1990), rates as highly as anything by Redouté, Prévost or van Spaëndonck. He describes Risso and Poiteau's work in glowing terms as "a Hesperidean holiday among orange and citrus groves, for it contains exquisite drawings of every known variety of orange, lemon, and grape fruit … fruits that hang from the leaves … like suns and moons, with every kind of rind, and shaped like gourds or pitchers … or again, authentic globes of fire, whether pale, as of moonlight, or red-gold like the sun but half-hidden, as in poetry, in its own green shade. A beautiful and inspiring work…" (p. 22-23). For further information, see Nissen BBI 1640; Oak Spring Pomona 76 and Stafleu and Cowan 9248.

[A Series of Picturesque Views of the River Thames. From the drawings of Wm. Havell. Dedicated to the commissioners of Thames navigation, by ... Robt. Havell]

[London: Robert Havell, 1818]. Large folio. (22 7/8 x 17 3/4 inches). 12 hand-coloured aquatint plates by Robert Havell after William Havell, each with black ruled border at the edge of the image and a buff wash border, on thin card, all on guards. Expertly bound to style in dark green straight-grained morocco, covers with fine decorative border composed from fillets and an arabesque roll-tool of stylized foliage, spine in eight compartments with double raised bands, the bands highlighted in gilt, lettered in the second and fourth compartments, the others with repeat decoration in gilt made up from various small tools, gilt turn-ins, gilt edges. A very fine copy of this important series of Thames views: a visual essay in the picturesque from one of the great watercolour landscape artists of the time, with plates by Audubon's engraver. The publication of the present work, present here in its rare second edition, marked the start of a long series of important publications by Robert Havell that were to culminate with his work on Audubon's Birds of America. The British Dictionary of National Biography describes William Havell as being "one of the best earlier painters in watercolour," an artist of the highest calibre whose images are "distinguished by pure and delicate colour." Born in 1782 in Reading, England, he traveled widely in his search for subjects: Wales, the Lake District, Europe and eight years in India and Burma. However, the present series drawn from the river that flowed through his home town is arguably his best work. The panoramic views betray the artist's intimate understanding of his subject, he ably captures both the river as a calm focus for scenes of great picturesque beauty, and the river as a vital highway for transport and trade. The plates, here bound without the title, offer the viewer a visual journey: from Oxford and the famous skyline of the Colleges, through the busy market town of Abingdon, to Wallingford (a view taken in 1810 whilst the bridge was being repaired), then two wonderful truly panoramic views of the Thames Valley, one viewed from higher ground at Streatley, and a second of Caversham Bridge near Reading. The journey continues with bucolic views near Park Place in Oxfordshire, the weir viewed from Marlow bridge and Clifden spring and woods, near Maidenhead. Taplow is next, then an interesting view of Windsor Castle before the renovations showing a skyline that is strange yet familiar. The journey ends with a fine view of Datchet Ferry near Windsor and a spectacular view of Staines church in newly emerged sunlight, whilst the rain clouds behind are lightened by a beautifully observed double rainbow.

Paris: Firmin Didot, 1818. Large folio. (28 3/4 x 21 inches). Letterpress title (verso blank), 1p. dedication to Louis XVIII (verso blank), 1p. 'avant-propos' (verso blank), 30ll. explanatory text (all but two printed recto only, one leaf preceding each plate). 30 fine uncoloured aquatint plates by and after Damame-Démartrais. (The 12th plate, a view of Notre- Dame, with a repaired tear in the outer margin). Contemporary blue/green straight-grained morocco-backed paper-covered boards, the flat spine divided into six compartments by double gilt fillets, lettered in the second compartment, old repairs to spine. A beautiful and rare large- scale work of views of Paris and its environs. According to Dulau's 1828 catalogue this work was originally sold in parts. They offered the present uncoloured issue at £20 (item 12456), whilst the issue with the plates printed in colours and finished by hand (item 12457) was on sale at £40. An idea of the book's current rarity can be garnered from the fact that OCLC list only a single copy: that in the Victoria & Albert Museum's "National Art Library" in London, and even the distinguished Bobins collection contains only a fragmentary work (with 5 plates in two states). Damame-Démartrais is now best known for his Collection complete des divers jardins et points de vue des maisons de plaisance imperiales de Russie.... [Paris, 1811]: a result of the nine years he spent living in Moscow and St.Petersburg between 1796 and 1805. Paris born, Damame- Démartrais was apparently taught by David but is now celebrated for his drawings and aquatints. The present work, dedicated to King Louis XVIII, was prompted by the artist's wish to record the new open vistas in Paris and its environs: each of the beautiful large-scale plates is accompanied by brief text which gives relevant details of the subject. The artist also notes in the 'avant-propos' that this work fills a gap, as there were no other comparable books of views of Paris and its environs. The majority of the plates are of places in Paris, but, as the title suggests, there are also a significant minority of the views of beautiful locations outside the city. Cf. Bobins The Exotic and the Beautiful II, 516; A Catalogue of the Library of the Athenæum (1845) p.85; A. Dulau & Co. Catalogue of Books in Foreign Languages , A. Dulau & Co. (1828) p.600; F. E.
