Narrative of an Expedition to Explore the River Zaire Usually Called The Congo, In South Africa, in 1816, under the Direction of Captain J.K. Tuckey, R.N. To Which is Added the Journal of Professor Smith; Some General Observations on the Country and its Inhabitants

Albemarle Street, London: John Murray, 1818. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very good. James Kingston Tuckey (1776-1816), an Irish-born English naval officer, was captured by the French on a voyage from St. Helena in 1805 and suffered an imprisonment of nearly nine years. Promoted to the rank of commander in 1814, he was later assigned to lead an expedition to explore the Congo River in 1816 to learn if there was a connection between the Congo and Niger basins. He explored the river up to 480 km from the sea. Most of the officers and crew died of fever and Tuckey himself died on 14 October 1816, aged 40, in Moanda, on the coast of today's Democratic Republic of the Congo. The expedition was a failure but raised interest in the exploration of Africa. This book is an account of the expedition, with thirteen plates, one colored by hand, and a large fold-out frontispiece map. This is a very good copy, rebacked and retaining the original quarter leather and marbled paper-covered boards. The boards show light wear to surfaces, heavier at the edges, with the binding tight and square. The contents are bright with moderate spotting confined mostly to plates and prelims. All plates and the foldout map are present and intact.

[Off Spitzbergen, high Arctic]. 1818.. Watercolor, 9 1/2 x 13 inches; matted to 13 1/2 x 18 1/2 inches. Small closed tear at top of sheet, not affecting image. Lightly toned, pinholes in corners of sheet, some light wear. Very good. A charming watercolor of a close-encounter with large walruses in the Arctic, painted by naval officer and artist Frederick W. Beechey. In 1818, then 24, Beechey sailed with the Arctic exploring expedition attempting to locate a northern passage to the Pacific via a Northeast Passage.. He later served as second in command and chief draughtsman aboard the Trent under Sir John Franklin. Some years later, in 1843, he compiled his narrative of the voyage with several sketches, entitled A VOYAGE OF DISCOVERY TOWARDS THE NORTH POLE, in which six reproductions of sketches he had done while in the Arctic were printed. While the printed work does contain two engravings of walruses - including one of the boat being attacked by them - this particular image is not among them. The piece shows the longboat of sailors on the left side approaching an ice flow on which four enormous walruses perch - the walruses take up fully half the page. A sailor in a red cap stands in the bow of the boat holding a pole, or perhaps it is a harpoon, while the remainder of the men pull at the oars, their backs to the artist. A handsome depiction from this important voyage. Beechey is best remembered for his later voyage to the Pacific and the Bering Strait, where he attempted to enter the Northwest Passage from the west to meet up with his old commander, Franklin. He ultimately retired as a rear admiral.

        A New Hieroglyphic Bible

Edinburgh: Oliver & Boyd, 1818. Early Edition. Hardcover. Very good. 12mo. 108pp. Publishers original drab brown cloth; upper board blocked in gilt with title within a floral design. Ink name on front pastedown. Cloth soiled, binding lightly shaken, gilt rubbed else a very good copy. The date of publication is taken from the Advertisement, page 4. This seems to be the first Oliver and Boyd printing of a hieroglyphic Bible and the second Edinburgh printing after the Doig and Sterling edition of 1814. The accepted publicaton date for this Bible is 1818; three other known copies are known to have been issued either in quarter leather and marbled paper boards, or in printed card covers. Our copy is in what is clearly publisher's cloth with gilt blocked on the upper board. This combination is unknown before 1826. It is likely, then, that the textblock, while printed earlier, was bound after 1826.Exceedingly scarce. Protected in a custom clamshell box.

Cfr. It seems likely that he was the same Henry Parry to whom the Oswestry book of 1811 was registered, though the 1818 manual is substantially a different book. It contains a much more adequate description of the forwarding processes; and, while the recipes for colouring edges and sprinkling leather come largely from the Oswestry book, they do not follow its wording...". "This work also gives the proper motions of the stars, as derived from the observations of Bradley, of Piazzi, and of Bessel himself. It constitutes a milestone in the history of astronomical observations, for until then positions of stars could not be given with comparable accuracy: through Bessel's work, Bradley's observations were made to mark the beginning of modern astrometry" (DSB). -- Bessel's reduction of the English astronomer James Bradley's star position observations for the year 1755 marks the beginning of modern astronomy. Bessel recognized that Bradley's accurate observations could be used to create a reference system for measuring the positions of stars and planets, and to aid in determining accurate positions for the earliest possible epoch. Recognizing that Bradley, although adept at the art of observation, had not been able to evaluate his extensive data, Bessel established the principle that immediately after an observation, the reduction should be made by the observer himself, taking into account precession, nutation, ablation, refraction and instrument error.         Instructions... Relating to the line of battle, orders of sailing, etc. etc

This is an officer’s manuscript copy of signals and instructions. It follows a familiar format, listing battle instructions, using color drawings of flags to show signaling methods, which correspond to “Significations” which are indexed and numbered. Also included is a drawing illustrating a method of signaling with oars from a boat. The book is thumb indexed for easy reference. On the inside of the back wrapper is written, “Mr. Thompson, HMS Talavera.” The Talavera was a 74 gun third rate ship of the line, launched in 1818 and destroyed by fire in 1840. The paper endsheets are watermarked 1831, suggesting Thompson served aboard the Talavera toward the end of her career, and that the instructions herein are a later iteration of those appearing in Howe’s printed “Signals and Instructions.” Text in ink and watercolor. Bound in blue wrappers, in a protective red leather box with spine label.

Oliver Wolcott, Esquire, is described as "Captain-General and Commander in Chief, in and over the State of Connecticut in , The United States of America." It is dated the twentieth day of July, A.D. 1818, and signed Oliver Wolcott. There is an embossed paper seal of the State of Connecticut, evidently hand-cut with serrations around its edge, and affixed to the document. It is a printed form document, on cream-colored paper, with blanks filled in by hand, and hand signed by Wolcott. It is folded multiple times, and has separated into two halves. A blank section of one of these halves is also separated, but present. There is evidence that the two halves were taped together at one time.. Signed by Author. Good.

Apicius Redivivus. The Cook's Oracle containing Practical Recipes

London - Printed for John Hatchard, 1818 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. The uncommon second edition of Kitchiner's feted cookery book in need of a little care and attention to the binding. Bound in half leather and marbled paper-covered boards, with gilt decoration. The Second Edition, Carefully Revised. Includes the Anacreontic Song to the rear, along with an Appendix. The sheet music has been close-cut to the fore-edge margin. There is a large recipe ink inscription to the verso of the front blank. In a tight plastic wrap that can be removed. The most famous of Kitchiner's numerous cookery books, The Cook's Oracle, first appeared in 1817 and went through many editions, even after his death. It was written in a down-to-earth style, and demonstrated Kitchiner's familiarity with the entire process, from shopping, through preparing and serving the dishes, to cleaning up. It was an acknowledged source of inspiration for Mrs Beeton, and was mined by the writers of other household guides -ODNB. Condition: The text block binding is generally tight and firm. The front blank and title page are partially attached. The boards are held by the cords only and could possibly detach in the post, even after careful packing. There is wear to the extremities, including rubbing and edge wear, with slight loss, and with loss to the leather of the spine and spine label. Internally the pages are generally bright with slight browning or slight tidemarks to the margins that only slightly affect the text, with intermittent spots or marks. There is a copperplate ink inscription to the half title and to the rear pastedown. Overall the condition is good only with a very good interior..

Seven Documents pertaining to Drawbacks for cargo shipped by John Jacob Astor in 1819 and 1821

The first set of four documents, dated 1818 and 1819, pertains to drawbacks requested for the shipment of eight cases of guns from Amsterdam, through New York, for the “North West Coast of America.” The guns were received on board the brig Carolina in New York in 1818 by an attorney representing Vasques, Manson & Cleeman, and I like to think they were bound for Chile and Bernardo O’Higgins’ new republic. In any event, one of the four documents is signed twice by Astor’s son William B. Astor, and once in New York as “John Jacob Astor & Son” in a handwriting that looks a great deal like John Jacob Astor’s own signature. The other three documents pertain to drawbacks requested for the shipment of “two hundred bales of camlets” (a valuable fabric) to Canton. This group is signed once by William B. Astor and again bears the “John Jacob Astor & Son” in what could very possibly be Astor’s signature. The firm of Astor and Son was formed to engage in the China trade, and was managed by William B.         Journal of a Visit to South Africa, in 1815, and 1816. With some Accounts of the Missionary Settlements of the United Brethren, near the Cape of Good Hope.

London: L.B. Seeley and R. Ackermann, 1818 - Quarto (263 × 204 mm) Contemporary mid-blue calf, black morocco label to the spine, narrow flattened bands, compartments with gilt saltire formed of lyre tools with a central lozenge containing an octofoil, palmette tools deeply in blind to the interstices, boards elaborately concentrically panelled in gilt and blind, beaded gilt edge-roll, edges and endpapers marbled, gilt laurel wreath and lozenge roll to the turn-ins. A little rubbed, and mottled on the boards, upper joint started towards the tail, but holding, second blank coming loose, some off-setting from and to the plates, one of the uncoloured plates rather browned, light browning overall, remains a highly attractive copy. Folding engraved map as frontispiece, routes marked in red and blue, 12 hand-coloured aquatint plates, and 4 uncoloured engravings. First edition. Latrobe was sent out to South Africa in response to the request of Moravian missionaries at Genadendal and Groenekloof for a minister to visit them. "The Governor of the Cape had expressed a wish that a third station should be opened, and in order to choose a site the author travelled through a large part of the country right up to the Fish River. There is a full description of the district of Groenekloof, and of the missionary settlements, about thirty miles north of Cape Town also an account of the church and village of Caledon" (Mendelssohn). Latrobe's account - characteristic of the man, "devout, but most companionable, and energetic in mind and body" - is much enhanced by the superbly coloured plates after sketches by the author himself and John Melville, Government Surveyor of the Cape, who accompanied him. Also included is a visit to St. Helena, and "the first description of the fledgling colony" of Ascension Island (Howgego).
