NARRATIVE OF AN EXPEDITION TO EXPLORE THE RIVER ZAIRE, Usually called the Congo, in 1816, under direction of Captain J.K. Tuckey, R.N. to which is added the Journal of Professor Smith; Some general observations on the Country and its inhabitants; And an appendix: containing the natural history of that part of the Kingdom of Congo through which the Zaire flows.

London John Murray 1818 - First edition. Illustrated with the large folding map and 13 engraved plates, of which one is coloured by hand. Large 4to, later antique wine coloured cloth, gilt lettering to the spine, t.e.g. 4ff., lxxxii, 498 pp. A large copy, quite clean and well preserved, crisp and unpressed, the colour plate in good order, some typical mellowing or spotting associated usually with the plates, upper cover detached and easily refurbished on request. SCARCE FIRST EDITION. An attempt to explore the Congo River and to find a link with the Niger and investigate the possibilities for trade on these arteries. Smith from Kew Gardens and other botanists were along to collect plant seeds. Tuckey died on the support ship. "Tuckey was one of the most observant of travelers. He had served in the Eastern Seas, and made a voyage to Brazil and Port Philip in 1803. Captured on his return voyage, he like Flinders, was detained as a prisoner by the French for several years. He subsequently compiled a valuable work on ‘Maritime Geography’ before setting on the government expedition to explore the Congo, then by many conjectured to be the outlet of the Niger. The results of this expedition were most disastrous, Captain Tuckey and many others dying within three months after entering the river". "An introductory view of African discovery preceeds the narrative of Tuckey and Smith and a series of appendices follow: these include (1) a vocabulary of the Malemba and Embonma languages by Cat. Tuckey. (2) Observations on the Genus Ocythioe of Rafinesque by Dr. Leach. (3) On Sepia and Vermes Testacea with plates. (4) Observations on Prof. Smith’s collection of plants by Robert Brown, etc." [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Narrative Of An Expedition To Explore The Zaire River, Usually Called The Congo. In South Africa. In 1816 To Witch Is Added, The Journal Of Professor Smith; Some General Observations On The Country And Its Inhabitants; An Appendix: Containing The Natural History Of That Part Of The Kingdom Of Congo Through Which The Zaire Flows

John Murray, London 1818 - 498 pages. 26 x 21 cm. Thirteen plates, one colored by hand and large fold-out frontispiece map, plus half title and publisher adverts. An Irish born English naval officer captured by the French on a voyage from St. Helena in 1805, he suffered an imprisonment of nearly nine years. Promoted to rank of commander in 1814, he was later assigned to lead an expedition to explore the Congo River in 1816 to learn if there was a connection between the Congo and Niger basins. Most of the crew including Tuckey succumbed to tropical fever or exhaustion and died in their efforts. Whereas the expedition failed it inspired interest by the British to continue African exploration. The accounts of the expedition gleaned from officer's reports, incomplete journals, etc., provided useful information on the natural history and inhabitants of the region. WOOD p. 603. Hand colored plate clean, balance mostly browned, lacking upper fore-edge corner of title page not affecting text, some quires misbound but present, text clean and fresh. Binding border panels in gilt and blind, marbled endpapers and edges. Contemporary gilt decorated full calf rebacked with most of original spine laid-down. Very good.         Autograph Signed Letter (ALS) to Sir Stafford Northcote Bt Dated April 29 1862 Written In the Course of Disraeli’s Attack on Gladstone’s Record As Chancellor of the Exchequer

      - DESCRIPTION OF ITEM: Heading his letter ‘Grosvenor Gardens 28 Apr 62’, twice Conservative Prime Minister writes to his eventual successor as Leader of the Conservative Party in the House of Commons Sir Stafford Northcote (1818-1887), ‘My dear Northcote, I hear from Lord Palmerston that the financial measures will not come on tonight: certain civil servants set (?) the business. Yours sincerely D.’ [Note: Northcote actually refers to this communiqué from Disraeli in Hansard in connection with the Deferment of the Second Reading of the Customs and Inland Revenue Bill - Hansard Apr 62 vol 166 cc 972-3]. HISTORICAL CONTEXT: Chapter VII volume IV of Monypenny and Buckle’s ‘The Life of Benjamin Disraeli’ (1916) helps to provide some context to the letter. With the Conservative Party in opposition to Palmerston’s liberal administration and Gladstone serving as Chancellor of the Exchequer, the letter is written at the start of the second phase of Disraeli’s concerted attack on Gladstone’s time in office. Continued expenditure on defence had produced a dire budgetary situation with war taxes continuing to be used in peace time and the threat of the increasing use of income tax - an anathema to Disraeli and also to many on Palmerston’s backbenchers. Having heavily criticised Gladstone’s record in the ‘Ways and Means - Committee’ debate a few weeks earlier (Hansard vol 166 cc 637-98), Disraeli used the second reading of the Customs and Inland Revenue Bill on 8th May to launch a savage attack on Gladstone which forced Palmerston to make voting on the Bill a vote of confidence in the Government in order to get it though. A close ally of Disraeli in this campaign, Northcote would go onto succeed Disraeli as Leader of the Conservative Party in the Commons when Disraeli was elevated to the Lords some years later in 1876. DETAILED CONDITION REPORT : 4pp with two pages of text written in black ink, each page measuring 4.5 inches x 7 inches. Very light spotting at top of first page but otherwise in fine condition with original mailing folds. ALL ITEMS SOLD BY ‘A PIECE OF HISTORY’ CARRY A LIFETIME GUARANTEE OF AUTHENTICITY.

Regierungsrat - Zwickau 01.02.1818; Silmann (?) Carl Juslius, stud. litt. - Zwickau, 02.02.1818; Graf Fr.         Histoire Naturelle des Orangers

Paris: Imprimerie de Mme. Hérissant le Doux, Imprimeur ordinaire du Roi [-], First edition 1818 - "Pp. (iv), 280, with 109 fine stipple-engraved plates printed in colors and finished by hand, with occasional touches of gum arabic, after Poiteau, by V. Bonnefoi, Chailly, Dien, Gabriel, Legrand, T. Susémihl and Texier. Contemporary light brown calf, neatly rebacked with spine laid on, the covers with a wide decorative border elaborately tooled in gilt and blind, the spine in six compartments with raised bands, black morocco lettering-piece in the second compartment, the others with repeat overall tooling, gilt turn-ins, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt, folio (338 x 252 mm). The title displays the wood-engraved arms of the Duchesse de Berry; there is a two page dedication to the Duchesse de Berry in the frontis matter. A very important monograph on citrus fruit; the work depicts an amazing variety of oranges, limes, lemons and the precursor of the grapefruit - many images show the complete fruit as well as the cross-section. It was this work that Sacheverell Sitwell, writing in Great Flower Books (1990), rates as highly as anything by Redouté, Prévost or van Spaëndonck. He describes Risso and Poiteau's work in glowing terms as "a Hesperidean holiday among orange and citrus groves, for it contains exquisite drawings of every known variety of orange, lemon, and grape fruit fruits that hang from the leaves like suns and moons, with every kind of rind, and shaped like gourds or pitchers or again, authentic globes of fire, whether pale, as of moonlight, or red-gold like the sun but half-hidden, as in poetry, in its own green shade. A beautiful and inspiring work " (p. 22-23). For further information, see Nissen BBI 1640; Oak Spring Pomona 76 and Stafleu and Cowan 9248." Some occasional light marginal foxing to parts of text, verso of some plates are lightly browned, heavier browning or spotting to six plates only, calf binding with slight edge wear and a few old mars, a tight, clean copy in very good condition in an attractive period binding.

The Miscellaneous Works of Tim Bobbin, Esq., and Plebelan Politics

      - Manchester - J. Slack and T. Sowler, 1818 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A fantastic collection of satirical character sketches and images from the 'Lancashire Hogarth'. Including John Collier's miscellaneous works, 'containing his view of the Lancashire dialect, with large additions and improvements: also, his poem of the flying dragon and the man of Heaton; together with other whimsical amusements in prose and verse. To which is added a life of the author'. Bound in with Robert Walker's 'Plebelan Politics, or The Principles and Practices of certain Mole-Eyed Maniacs Vulgarly Called Warrites. By way of Dialogue betwixt two Lancashire Clowns. Together with Several Fugitive Pieces by Tim Bobbin the Second'. Featuring a frontispiece to each title, and numerous further plates featuring Collier and Walker's humorous illustrations and caricatures. Binder's label of T. Sowler, Manchester, to front pastedown. John Collier, [pseud. Tim Bobbin] (17081786), satirist and caricaturist. In 1746 there appeared under the name Tim Bobbin, Collier's first and most famous work, A View of the Lancashire Dialect, or, Tummus and Mary, the earliest significant piece of Lancashire dialect to be published. Subsequently expanded to include a glossary, illustrations, and other material, it went through seven editions in his own lifetime and was prolifically pirated both before and after his death. Collier now developed his trade as a painter, increasingly with the help of his sons, producing inn signs, painted panels, and grotesque caricatures which were widely distributed, reaching the American colonies via a Liverpool merchant. He promoted and distributed his own work, travelling all over northern England collecting and delivering orders and commissions for books and pictures and consuming the proceeds as he went. In 1773 was published his Human Passions Delineated, an upmarket edition of his caricatures which acted as a catalogue, in which he described himself as the Lancashire Hogarth. Two local radicals, Robert Walker (writing as Tim Bobbin the Second in 1796) and James Butterworth (as Paul Bobbin in 1819), later attempted to appropriate his reputation to the radical cause. DNBCondition: In a half calf binding with marbled boards. Externally sound although rubbed. Internally, firmly bound. Generally bright and clean aside from some very slight marginal age-toning with just a few scattered spots, and some off-setting from the text. Copperplate ink signature to recto of frontispiece and title of Miscellaneous Works. Overall: VERY GOOD..

Otis on the Infamous Hartford Convention: "We Ought Not Be Indifferent to The Effects Of An Erroneous Public Opinion On This Subject, Upon The Present Age & Upon Posterity "

Boston 1818 - Autograph Letter Signed, to George Bliss. Boston, October 20, 1818. 1 p. With integral address leaf. The presiding officer of the infamous Hartford Convention endeavors to clear the names of its Federalist creators. "It has occurred to me, that justice to the states represented in the late Hartford Convention, seems to require that the private journal of their proceedings, should be deposited in some place, to which access may be had.we ought not.be indifferent to the effects of an erroneous public opinion on this subject, upon the present age & upon posterity."Historical BackgroundThe Hartford Convention (December 15, 1814 to January 4, 1815) was a meeting of legislators and New England Federalists, who discussed how the United States could address grievances of the northern states. Unhappy with Jefferson's Embargo and other continuing trade policies, The New England states refused to turn control of their militias to the national government in 1814 when threatened with invasion, and did not support loans to the federal government or conscription. The more radical Federalists even considered a separate peace with Great Britain. Rumors circulated outside the meeting that the delegates were planning to secede from the U.S. - a proposal raised by the extremist faction but rejected by the majority. Instead, the convention drafted a set of proposed changes to the U.S. constitution and laws, such as prohibiting embargos longer than 60 days, and requiring a two-thirds majority in Congress to declare war. These resolutions were rendered irrelevant by the Treaty of Ghent, signed on December 24, which ended the war. But the rumors of the convention's disloyalty to the U.S. harmed the reputation of the Federalist Party, which ceased to be an important political force.Harrison Gray Otis (1765-1848), appointed by President Washington U.S. district attorney for Massachusetts (1796); elected as a Federalist to the Fifth and Sixth Congresses (1797-1801); appointed district attorney for Mass. by President John Adams (1801-2); member and speaker of the State house of representatives 1802-1805; member State senate 1805-1813, 1814-1817, and its president 1805-1806, 1808-1811; overseer of Harvard University 1810-1823; delegate to the Hartford convention in 1814; judge of the court of common pleas 1814-1818; elected as a Federalist to the U. S. Senate (1817-1822), unsuccessful candidate for mayor of Boston 1822 and for governor of Massachusetts 1823; fellow of Harvard University 1823-1825; mayor of Boston 1829-1832 (excerpted from bioguide.congress.gov). Otis made a fortune developing Beacon Hill. His home is now Otis House Museum, a National Historic Landmark, designed by Charles Bulfinch.
