A Portraiture of Domestic Slavery, in the United States: Proposing National Measures for the Education and Gradual Emancipation of the Slaves, Without Impairing the Legal Privileges of the Possessor: and A Project of a Colonial Asylum for Free People of Color: Including Memoirs of Facts in the Interior Traffic in Slaves, and On Kidnapping

Ballston Spa [NY]: The Author. 1818. First. Second edition (and the first Ballston Spa edition, originally published the previous year in Philadelphia). Original quarter calf and papercovered boards. Very faint tidemark to the edges of the first few pages, some modest rubbing and light wear, a sound, very good or better copy. Bookplate of Ransom Cook, which covers Cook's easily readable signature. Cook was a longtime resident of Saratoga Spa (Ballston Spa is the county seat of Saratoga County) who, in addition to being an inventor, opened a carpentry and cabinetmaking shop there. He was responsible for the building of Dannemora (later Clinton) State Correctional Institution and was eventually named warden there. His advocacy for the humane treatment of inmates was unusual for its time. This famous title, a survey of slavery in the United States by a Philadelphia physician, is especially scarce in the fragile, original binding. .

A DICTIONARY OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE in Which The Words are Deduced from Their Originals Illustrated in their Different Significations by Examples from the Best Writers to which are prefixed A History of the Language and an English Grammar. To which are added Walker's Principles of English Pronunciation

Moses Thomas,, Philadelphia: 1818 - 4to, 2 large volumes, unpaginated. Bound in full calf, elaborately stamped in gilt (worn at the extremities of the spine, weak on the hinges. Engraved frontispiece portrait of Johnson in volume 1. AEG, With an ownership signature of George Plitt from 1824 and a note by his son John that the set was rebound in 1849. Waterstain to the inner margin of the half-title and title-page of volume two. Generally a very good set. Shaw and Shoemaker 44473; Printing and the Mind of Man, 201 (ref). " Begun in 1747 and printed over five years, Johnson's Dictionary set the standard for all subsequent lexicographical work. Its excellence was immediately recognized in all quarters and the first edition of two thousand copies sold quickly. What set Johnson's Dictionary apart from earlier efforts was his reliance on the examples of English literature rather than his own intuition or previous word lists or dictionaries, a method that has been the standard ever since, from Richardson and Webster to the Oxford English Dictionary. Johnson, in undertaking this vast work, set out to perform singlehanded for the English language what the French Academy, a century before, had attempted for French. He hoped to produce "a dictionary by which the pronunciation of our language may be fixed, and its attainment facilitated;" and though, of course, no language can be frozen in time, by aiming at fixing the language he succeeded in giving the standard of reputable use. As Noah Webster stated, his work "had, in philology, the effect which Newton's discoveries had in mathematics." Johnson presumed to finish the work for the Dictionary in three years by his own labor, but he underestimated the work required and it eventually took nine years to complete (though not all of his time was spent upon the Dictionary, as he was also the editor of The Rambler at this time) and required the assistance of six amanuenses--five of whom, to Boswell's satisfaction, were Scotsmen. "Johnson's achievement marked an epoch in the history of the language. The result of nine years labor, it did more than any other work before or since towards fixing the language. The preface ranks among Johnson's finest writings. The most amazing, enduring, and endearing one-man feat in the field of lexicography" [Printing and the Mind of Man] First Unabridged American edition from the 11th London edition.

The Art of Bookbinding: Containing a Description of the Tools, Forwarding, Gilding and Finishing, Stationary Binding, Edge-Colouring, Marbling, Sprinkling, &c., &c.

London: Published by Messrs. Baldwin Cradock & Joy 1818 - First Edition, small 8vo, [iv],iv,92pp., woodcut frontispiece (offset), woodcut vignette on title page, marbled endpapers, cont. half calf, marbled boards, upper hinge expertly repaired, spine gilt with green morocco label, a nice copy. Pollard & Potter, Early Bookbinding Manuals. 93. "The authors name, Henry Parry, appears on the printed boards, but not on the title-page. It seems likely that he was the same Henry Parry to whom the Oswestry book of 1811 was registered, though the 1818 manual is substantially a different book. It contains a much more adequate description of the forwarding processes; and, while the recipes for colouring edges and sprinkling leather come largely from the Oswestry book, they do not follow its wording.". This, the second English book devoted wholly to bookbinding, is a far scarcer book than the Oswestry manual of 1811. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
