James Monroe
1817. Treasury was one of Monroe’s most important Cabinet appointments, as in Treasury Crawford set policy for the new Second Bank of the United States This is the second oldest cabinet level presidential appointment known to be in private hands, and we obtained it from the Crawford descendants The inauguration of James Monroe as the fifth President of the United States was held on Tuesday, March 4, 1817, in front of the Old Capitol, where the Supreme Court building now stands. The inauguration marked the commencement of Monroe’s first term as President. Chief Justice John Marshall administered the oath of office, and the President's inaugural address to the crowd from a platform adjacent to the Old Capitol building was the first to be given outdoors. The President’s Cabinet at that time consisted of five department heads: the Secretaries of State, War, Treasury, Navy, and the Attorney General. It took Monroe nine months to put his Cabinet together, and during that time period important posts were filled by men temporarily acting as department heads, either until Monroe’s desired appointees could take office, or until someone acceptable would agree to Monroe’s offers of the posts. Specifically, the deplorable state of the War Department in the wake of the War of 1812 led four men to decline Monroe’s offers to accept the office of Secretary of War before John C. Calhoun finally assumed the role in December 1817. Likewise the Attorney General’s post - which was part time back then - was filled by William Wirt in November. James Madison’s Attorney Genera … [Click Below for Full Description]

Alcune bruniture e fioriture all'interno. [Click Below for Full Description]

Carpenter's Book / Salem County, New Jersey." An exemplary ciphering book featuring fine penmanship and several hand-colored illustrations and diagrams. The book's contents is divided into three sections, each corresponding to Carpenter's courses taken at the Mannington School in Salem County, and the Weston School (i.e., Westtown), a Quaker boarding school in Chester County, Pennsylvania: Algebra, pp. 1-53 (Mannington, 1817); Surveying, pp. 54-140 [141-148] (Mannington, 1817); and Astronomy, pp. [149-208] (Weston, 1820). The second section on Surveying is illuminated with many hand-colored illustrations and figures, including maps of local landmarks, such as: "New Road to Salem," "Joseph Reeve's House," "Cedar Creek," among others. The third section on Astronomy features two large hand-colored diagrams and pen & ink diagrams. The text and tables are written in Carpenter's neat hand, as the practice of good penmanship was presumably integral with the course work. EDMAN, JOHAN FREDRIK.
Mariefred, (J. F. Edman), 1817. 8:o. (4),115,(3) s. & 1 utvikbart grav. notblad. Klemming Sveriges dramatiska litteratur s. 208.

[DANCE MANUSCRIPT].
Charming manuscript giving instructions for dancing all the figures of the quadrille according to the "modern style". Well arranged and clearly divided into 32 numbered points, the manuscript gives definitions of a ball, dancing instructions, positions of the feet and arms, simple steps, "minuetto serio", etc.The ink shows through the paper a bit, but without hindering the reading of the text. In very good condition. The sewing is slightly loose and the binding shows a few small scuff marks. An interesting anonymous Italian manuscript on the quadrille as danced in the early 19th century.

TASSO, Torquato.
London: Printed by Bensley and Son for R. Triphook, 1817. London: Printed by Bensley and Son for R. Triphook,, 1817. Translated by Edward Fairefax. 2 volumes, octavo (238 x 143 mm). Contemporary pale brown morocco, gilt titles to brown labels to spines, decorations to spines in gilt, frames gilt to covers, marbled endpapers, gilt turn-ins and edges. Portrait frontispiece to vol. I, vignettes to the text, engraved plate of the original 1600 title page. Slight wear to extremities, occasional light foxing; an excellent set. First edition thus, one of 50 large paper copies. Fairfax's translation was originally published in 1600; the first English translation of Tasso's poetical account of the first crusade being Richard Carew's, published in 1594. This edition, edited by Samuel Weller Singer, includes Fairfax's fourth eclogue and Carew's translation of the fourth canto. "Fairfax's command of the telling phrase and wide-ranging and aptly used scholarship established his reputation. There were several seventeenth-century reprints, that of 1624 being at the order of James I. It is supposed to have been a solace to Charles I during his time in prison and the poem strongly influenced the development of English poetry from Webster to Dryden" (ODNB). This edition is uncommon with just seven copies traced on Copac, none of which are in the large paper issue.
