Leopardi, Giacomo, Italian writer (1798-1837).
1817. 4to (c. 240 x 190 mm). 1 p. Address panel on verso, traces of seal, annotated by the recipient. To the publisher Antonio Stella in Milan, enquiring whether his essay on "il Diogini del Mai" (i.e., Mai's discovery of Dionysius of Halicarnassus) might be included in the next issue of the "Spettatore Italiano", urging Stella that, if so, it should be published quickly, because of the novelty of the subject matter, but that he should take particular care over the small amount of Greek text in the essay, since it comprises a number of detailed emendations which would be rendered quite unintelligible by any errors of type-setting. Leopardi promises to send him any further dissertations he writes on the many discoveries of Angelo Mai, and asks if copies might be sent to his father and to the critic known as Mezio. - Overall browning and spotting, one small hole slightly affecting the text, seal tear at corner.

LANGSDORFF, G[eorg] H[einrich] von
Carlisle: Printed by George Philips, 1817. FIRST AMERICAN EDITION. Lacking the frontispiece, but with half-titles to each part present. Later quarter calf and marbled boards with red morocco spine label; interior browning with the occasional stain, marginal loss to upper corners of leaves M3, M4, and Z4, and a light damp stain affecting the last few signatures. First American edition (a reprint of the first English translation published in London, 1813-14). In 1803, Adam Johann Ritter von Krusenstern set out from Kronstadt, Russia on what would become the first Russian circumnavigation of the globe. Langsdorff accompanied the expedition as a naturalist and physician, but parted ways with the crew in 1805 upon reaching Kamchatka - a peninsula in far eastern Russia - continuing on to explore the Aleutian Islands and Alaska. In 1806 he sailed from Sitka to the Spanish presidio at San Francisco. He provides detailed descriptions of the region (the original German edition of 1812 actually included a plate that is the first published view of San Francisco) and of his meeting with commandant José Argüello. The visit resulted in the famed romance between Count Nikolay Rezanov of the Russian-American Company, who had traveled with Langsdorff, and Concepción de Argüello, the Spanish commander's daughter, immortalized in literature by Bret Harte, Gertrude Atherton, and others throughout the years. In addition to his descriptions of these places, Langsdorff also includes accounts of Brazil, Japan, Hawaii and Alaska. "Langsdorff's account is rich in descriptions … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

CUVIER, G.
Paris, Deterville, 1817. 4 volumes. 8vo (203 x 130mm). pp. xxxvii, 540; pp. xviii, 532; pp. xxix, 653; pp. viii, 255, with 15 engraved plates. Contemporary half calf, gilt decorated spines, marbles sides. A fine copy of the rare first edition of this classic work which Singer in his 'History of Biology' describes as "the most comprehensive biological work since Linnaeus". Cuvier, also called the 'Founder of modern comparative zoology', in the foreword of the present work states that he enters a strong protest against those who would arrange all living creatures in one series. "He emphatically denies that mammals, which come last in the system, are the lowest, or that the last mammal in the series is more perfect than the first bird. Here Cuvier has certainly laid his finger on one of the weakest points of the whole series theory, as expounded by Bonnet and Lamarck, and has undeniably forestalled the conception of the relativity of the degree of evolution as held in modern times." (Nordenskiöld, pp. 339-340). "The most influential exposition of the typological approach to animal classification, representing the greatest body of zoological facts that had yet been assembled; it served as the standard zoological manual for most of Europe during the first half of the nineteenth century" (Norman Library, 567).Provenance: Armorial bookplate of Le Cte Frédéric de Pourtales.Dibner, Heralds of Science 195; Printing and the Mind of Man 276; Sparrow, Milestones of Science 42. Forbin, Louis Nicolas Philippe Auguste.
1817. Text vol. in 8vo and atlas in folio (670 x 503 mm). (4), 460 pp. (4), 65 pp. Half-titles in both vols.; 80 lithographed, sepia aquatint or engraved plates and plans, the 8 fine aquatints by Debucourt after Forbin, the lithographed subjects for G. Engelmann after Lecomte, Deseynes, Castellan, Carle, and Horace Vernet, Fragonard, Thiénon, Legros, Isabey and others, large folding engraved plan at the end of text vol. 19th century marbled half calf with giltstamped title to gilt spine. First edition. Only 325 copies of this work were produced. "Forbin's was one of the first important French books to use lithography on a grand scale, and the standard of production is equal to that of Napoléon's 'Description de l'Egypte' or Denon's 'Voyage'" (Navari, Blackmer). Forbin succeeded Denon as director of museums in 1816 and was authorised to purchase antiquities for the Louvre (his son-in-law, Marcellus, expedited the acquisition of the recently discovered Venus de Milo). In August 1817 he began a year-long journey to the Levant accompanied by the artist Pierre Prévost and the engineer de Bellefonds. His journey took him to Melos, Athens, Constantinople, Smyrna, Ephesus, Acre, Jaffa, Jerusalem, Cairo, Luxor, and Thebes. - This set includes the frequently lacking 8vo text volume: this has the plan of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre bound at the end with a list of plates which were sold separately. The atlas volume repeats the text (entirely reset in-folio, sometimes found in a separate folio volume) and includes the magnificent, highly desirable plates (after Carle Vernet, Fragon … [Click Below for Full Description]
