Kant. WIRGMAN, Thomas.
n.p. [London 1817] Quarto original wrapper titled in gilt with printed label; printed on the back; title leaf, pp763-784 and separately printed index leaf numbered 785, four hand coloured plates. A presentation from Wirgman inscribed to Wm Constable Esqre on the front wrapper and annotated throughout as a guide to the reader. This a separate printing of Wirgman's article on Kant's moral philosophy in Encyclopaedia Londinensis - a perfect example of enthusiasm on it's way to being mania. Wirgman did four articles altogether covering the array of Kant and these could be bought from him coloured or uncoloured. He then went on to write and publish a formidable line of Kantesian solutions to everything. Along the way he spent the fortune he had made as a goldsmith. As John Timbs - retailer of dusty gossip - described him, "the eccentric Thomas Wirgman, the Kantesian, as a goldsmith and jeweller, made a considerable fortune, which he squandered as a regenerating philosopher." Wirgman was introduced to Kant by Friedrich Nitsch in the 1790s along with Godwin, Henry Richter and Coleridge. Unlike fellow traveller Coleridge, Wirgman didn't run for cover confronted with the indifference or hostility to German philosophy in England. It may have been exactly Wirgman that made Coleridge write "I am no Zealot or Bigot for German Philosophy" to a friend at the same time he wanted to found a German library - just not called German - in London. As said, Wirgman, advertised these for sale but this is a special presentation copy exhaustively made easy to navigate by numerous captions and pointe … [Click Below for Full Description]

HAÜY, René-Just
Three folding engraved plates. xvi, xxii, 253 pp. 8vo, later pink wrappers (minor foxing or browning). Paris: Courcier, 1817. First edition. The French petrographers were far more interested in the mineralogical composition and structure of rocks, without respect to their mode of occurrence, their age, or their origin. It was Haüy who laid the foundation of the mathematical theory of crystal structure. In this work he applied it to the analysis and classification of precious stones. "Very scarce. A landmark book in the science of gemology, described by Sinkankas (1994) as 'the first determinative gemology worthy of the name.' This book marks a transition from earlier descriptive lapadaries to works based on scientific studies. The volume describes the crystallography and physical properties of various gemstones, and characterizes how these qualities might be used in identifying a stone, whether rough or cut. To facilitate this an identification table is provided. The three plates show various crystal forms, a Nicholson's hydrometer (used for measuring specific gravity) and other laboratory apparatus for testing electrical properties."-Schuh, Mineralogy & Crystallography: A Biobibliography, 1469 to 1920 (in progress), 2128. In the Introduction, Haüy refers to Henry Philip Hope, the buyer of the blue diamond of supposed sinister influence known by his name. Very good copy. ? D.S.B., VI, pp. 178-83. Contemporary tan calf backed boards, corners recycled from older manuscript on vellum, spine gilt-tooled in compartments with two navy morocco title labels gilt, blue silk bookmarker to first three volumes. Covers somewhat marked and rubbed, light spotting within somewhat more to prelims, tear to title page of volume 4, all sound, very good condition withal. Half title to each volumes, 15 engraved plates in the rear of the final volume. First edition, with all four half titles present, and the 15 engraved plates by Laurillard. This is the seminal work of natural history by the recognised father of comparative anatomy, applying the Linnaean system of classification to the whole animal kingdom, and establishing the four classes, vertebrata, mollusca, articulata and radiata. This four volume first edition is the one cited in Printing and the Mind of Man, "In contradiction to the current view that the structure of an animal determined its functions and habits Cuvier held that an animal's structure was due to its function and habits. Stomachs are required by mobile creatures: plants do not have stomachs. A carnivore needs sharp teeth, powerful jaws, claws, etc.: a herbivore has flat teeth and hooves. This kind of distinction is a commonplace today, but Cuvier was the first to apply such analyses and comparisons to the entire animal kingdom. He also saw that this homogeneity in an individual should enable a competent naturalist to reconstruct a complete animal from any significant part of … [Click Below for Full Description]

PIE VII (Gregorio Barnaba Luigi Chiaramonti, pape);GREGOIRE (Henri);

Hi, This lot is a paperback copy of the Third Edition of William Lamberts ""Instructions and Rules for playing the Nobel Game of Cricket as practised by the most eminent players"" Published in the Spring of 1817 (before May) so nearly 200 years old. This paperback does not have the original covers or the frontispiece but other than that it is complete and checked against Roger Hancocks guide. The front cover (title page) has tape to the left but the book is badly shaken and could do with new tape or to be rebound as it is very loose indeed, hence the tiny price.

STUBBS, George engraved by George Townly STUBBS
London: Published by Edward Orme, 1817.London: Published by Edward Orme, 1817. A breathtaking print of Lord Grosvenor's famous racehorse Protector, by George Stubbs, England's most famous equine painter. George Stubbs is considered one of the greatest English painters. His ingenious animal and sporting pictures remain unrivalled in their passionate depiction of emotion and their commitment to naturalistic observation. Stubbs was briefly apprenticed to the painter Hamlet Winstanley, a relationship that quickly ended, leaving the young artist to his own tuition. In contrast to contemporary academic theory, Stubbs' attached great importance to the belief that art should imitate nature, not the work of other artists. He spent years carefully studying human and equine anatomy so that he could truthfully represent natural form and movement. A result of this study was his famous 'Anatomy of the Horse', which details, with beautiful engraving, the various elements of a horse's anatomy, from skeletal form to muscular definition. Continuing in search of innovation, Stubbs began experimenting with a myriad of different mediums, becoming accomplished in both enamels and printmaking. Through arduous application, he became a talented mezzotint engraver and worked with ease in both soft ground, and etching techniques. Stubbs' masterful paintings inspired some of the greatest engravers of the day to reproduce his work for publication, including his own son George Townly Stubbs who reproduced with faithful accuracy the sublime emotion inherent in his father's … [Click Below for Full Description]

CURTIS, W.
1817. A new edition, enlarged by George Graves and William Jackson Hooker. London, Henry G. Bohn, [1817-] 1835. 5 volumes. Large-folio (481 x 290mm). With 659 beautifully handcoloured engraved plates on 647 leaves. Contemporary green half morocco, spines in 6 compartments with gilt lettering, topedges gilt. A reissue of the second, much enlarged edition. The second edition was published from 1817-1828. "Henry Bohm took over the remaining copies of this second edition and issued them in 1835 with new title-pages, carrying the date 1835" (Stafleu & Cowan 1286). The first three volumes contain the original 432 plates, but the text rewritten by Hooker. The final two volumes are entirely new, with the plates mostly from drawings by Hooker, together with his own descriptions. The impressive 'Flora Londinensis' is much more comprehensive in scope than its title suggests, for it embraces most of the English flora, and as a result of which it should be properly regarded as the first colour-plate national flora. "Curtis adopted the novel plan of having specimens drawn to a uniform scale and to life size, and most of the plates display a high degree of accuracy. In the opinion of Salisbury, the majority of the figures 'represent the most successful portrayals of British wild flowers that have ever been achieved'" (Henry II, p. 67). The fine plates are by James Sowerby, Sydenham Edwards, and Hooker. William Curtis is one of the great names in botany, the present work and his famous 'Botanical Magazine' are landmarks in English botany. Jan Florián Hammerschmidt (1652-1737), Jan Hýbl
Prague: Bohumil Háze (Gottlieb Haase), 1817. Octavo (20 × 16 cm). Original self-wrappers with brown paper spine strip; [3], 15 pp. Printed in Latin and Czech, with the latter set in a Fraktur font. Lightly dust-soiled; spine strip worn; small nick to right margin of p. 1; old vertical crease to text. First (separate?) edition of this satire in verse on the Czech national character from the Baroque period, the most famous literary work by J. F. Hammerschmidt (1652-1737), the Czech historian, writer, and priest. In addition to his historical and theological explorations, Hammerschmidt wrote numerous lighter works of satirical nature. He was known for his refusal to write and preach in German, using only Czech and Latin. This work playfully alternates Czech and Latin words, sometimes creating new words from a Latin and Czech morpheme each, respectively set in Fraktur and Antiqua fonts. The title page indicates that this poem was "issued" in 1715, but we cannot locate any such a publication, suggesting this to be the first edition, or possibly the first stand-alone edition. The KVK and OCLC catalogs show only the copy at the Czech National Library (Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin holds the second edition, 1829).

[3], 4-216, [2]p. The last leaf is blank. Bound is recent sugar paper wraps. Untrimmed. A scarce imprint of a hard to come by book on the Anglo-American War (1812-1815). "written in 1816 after he had become the outspoken critic of the Tory ministry and all its policies, foreign and domestic. It was designed to show that the defeats suffered by Great Britain during the War of 1812 were due to the incompetence and extravagance of the government in London.This was a favorite theme of Cobbett at the time and he was fond of contrasting the Tory leadership with the rather idealized picture that he had of the honest and homespun American statesmen. It is not surprising that an American publisher brought out an edition of this work."- Recent Acquisitions of the William Cobbett Collection in the Rutgers University Library by John W. Osborne.
