A Narrative of the Briton's Voyage to Pitcairn's Island.

Taunton: printed for the author by J.W. Marriott, 1817. Octavo, with a frontispiece and 15 illustrations on 11 etched plates, two of which are folding, all by the author; the view of Juan Fernandez printed in ochre; an attractive copy in mid-nineteenth century polished half calf with gilt lettered black morocco label. The very scarce first edition: the fact that it was privately published by Shillibeer in Taunton, Devon, may explain its surprising rarity. This is one of the more elusive pieces of Pacificana, and one of the more delightful. Shillibeer's account of his adventures is thoroughly idiosyncratic in style, as are the etched plates - all after his own drawings - which have an appealing naïveté. One can only admire the eccentricity of his view of Juan Fernandez being printed in ochre - as it is "the native colour of that island".The narrative of the voyage of the Briton is also of great importance for Pacific history, particularly for the material that it contains relating to the mutiny on the Bounty. Shillibeer was one of the first to piece together the later history of the mutineers, largely as a result of his meeting and interview with John Adams, the last survivor of the mutiny. The visit to Pitcairn itself is described at length, and there is a good view of the island and a portrait of Friday Christian, Fletcher Christian's son. Shillibeer also describes visits to Chile and Peru, as well as the Galapagos Islands, and the search for the predatory American frigate the Essex. The popularity of this book led to two further editions in quick succession, a direct reflection of public curiosity about the revelation of Pitcairn and the mutineers. This particular copy is bound with two other books on the Napoleonic wars, being Colonel Sherer's Recollections of the Peninsula (London 1824), and the anonymously compiled Battle of Waterloo (London, third edition of 1815) featuring a splendid folding panorama of the battlefield printed on two sheets. Some offsetting, including the frontispiece and title page, intermittent foxing; joints and extremities of the binding rubbed, front hinge becoming tender.

[From Talleyrand's Library]. Additions to the Fourth and Former Editions of An Essay on the Principle of Population.

London: [W. Clowes for] John Murray, 1817. 1st Edition. Hardcover. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. 8vo (225 x 140 mm) [4], 327 [1], [8] pp., including publishers adverts dated September 1817 at end. Original publishers paper card boards with lettered paper spine label (spine and hinges heavily chipped, upper hinge broken but holding, corners bumped), pages untrimmed. Text little foxed (stronger at beginning an end). Provenance: Charles-Maurice de Talleyrand-Perigord library, "Talleyrand," with the castle of Valençay bookplate to front pastedown. Another bookplate with monogram E.B.L. to front pastedown. A very good copy with an interesting provenance. ----Goldsmiths 21762; Kress B6973. - FIRST EDITION. Malthus (1766-1834) had published in his lifetime six editions of his famous Essay on the principle of population (first edition in 1798). The work sometimes includes the text of the fifth edition of the Essay published the same year, but was also separately issued - as here - for owners of previous editions. The final version of the Essay appeared in 1826. The presence of such a work in the library of Talleyrand is not surprising. Talleyrand arguably was one of the French politicians most receptive to the English economic and financial thinking of his time. Very Good.

4to. Finely and handsomely bound in half tan Regency calf over marbled boards, the spine with 5 raised bands exquisitely and extravagantly decorated in gilt in compartments with a repeating scroll-tool design, lettered direct in gilt, marbled endpapers and edges, housed within a custom-made beige cloth-covered fall-down-back box with green cloth label lettered in gilt; pp. [58]; with fine stipple-engraved, and hand-coloured, allegorical frontispiece of the Muse of Drawing by Louis Portman after Jacques Kuyper, together with 20 other fine, and exquisite, engraved plates with detailed and expert hand-colouring throughout; a wonderfully pleasing copy; externally fine; recently expertly, and invisibly, rejointed at upper board by Charles Gledhill, internally also preserved in exceptionally crisp state with occasional very light, and inoffensive, browning and spotting (almost exclusively confined to text pages) and some of the unavoidable offsetting from plates to blank guards, with a neat contemporary inscription, dated 1817, to front blank. Early, revised, edition, complete with an additional 4 plates, with extensive explanatory text in both Dutch and French. This work originally appeared in 5 instalments from 1803 to 1807, with a total of 16 plates. All images carry the imprint of Evert Maaskamp and Colnaghi & Co., apart from plate 1, which only mentions the Dutch printer. It is a historically, ethnologically, and culturally, important volume of prints of costumes of the various Batavian provinces, designed to underline their antique origin, and their "absolute Dutchness". The venture was also, in part, a propaganda exercise, designed to reinforce Dutch national identity following a period of political unrest. Similar works had appeared in France, England, Germany and Switzerland in response to the growing intellectual interest in the study of popular culture. This also stimulated artistic, and commercial, competition between nations. The beautiful and animated backgrounds which were drawn from nature, the beautifully observed and documented details of costume (which were drawn from life), and the extensive anecdotal text, provide a social, cultural, and historical context for the dress (Eveline Koolhaas-Grosfeld.

A Narrative of Voyages and Travels in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres: Comprising Three Voyages Round the World; Together With a Voyage of Survey and Discovery in the Pacific and Oriental Islands.

Boston: E.G.House, for the author, 1817. FIRST EDITION. Octavo, pp.598; [1], errata. Period-style half tan calf over marbled boards. A presentable example of an important work, being one of the earliest round-the-world voyages by an American. Delano's account demonstrates an open-minded curiosity and respect for the diverse cultures encountered and includes detailed observations of whaling and seal-hunting. Chapters IV-V tell of Fletcher Christian's mutiny aboard the "Bounty" and Herman Melville's short story 'Benito Cereno' was inspired by Delano's chronicle of a Spanish vessel commandeered by the slaves it was transporting.

Report from the committee of the Honourable the House of Commons on the employment of boys in sweeping of chimneys; together with the Minutes of Evidence taken before the Committee, and an Appendix. Ordered by the House of Commons to be printed, June 23, 1817. Published under the direction of the Society for Superseding the Necessity of Climbing Boys: with notes and observations; a complete list of persons using the machine (for cleaning chimneys), and a descriptive engraving of it.

London, Baldwin, Cradock & Joy, 1817. 8vo., engraved frontispiece, 142pp., occasional light spotting, frontispiece slightly offset, a very good copy bound recently in red cloth, spine lettered in gilt. First edition thus, comprising the Report> itself (cmd.400) together with substantial commentary and additional related material including a description of the sweeping machine, the trial of Joseph Rae and Robert Reid for the murder of 11 years-old John Fraser, and a list of people who had signed up to using the machine. Goldsmiths 21889. Not in Kress. In 1788, an Act for the better regulation of chimney sweepers and their apprentices,> intended to alleviate 'the misery of the said boys', stated that apprentices had to be at least 8 years old and that each sweep was limited to six apprentices, but the intentions of the Act were largely ignored due to lack of any means of enforcement. Thus the Society for Superseding the Necessity of Climbing Boys was formed in 1803, with the objective of finding a machine to clean chimneys and thus end the dangerous and cruel practice of sending boys up them. The problem was widespread, as can be seen from the present Report>, which estimates 200 masters and 500 apprentices in London alone. In 1803, an engineer named George Smart had designed a piece of apparatus similar to that of a modern sweep. The device, as illustrated in the frontispiece of the Report,> consisted of hollow wooden poles joined together by a rope which ran through the sections of pole. The pole had a brush made of pieces of whale bone at one end. A sweep could push the device up the chimney, pull the rope once its end was protruding out of the top of the chimney and the brush would then expand to take the shape of an inverted umbrella. It was then pulled down to scrape the soot off the inside of the chimney. Actual legislation did not come until much later. The 1834 Chimney Sweeps Act,> which forbade the apprenticing of any boy under the age of 10 years and the employment of children under 14 unless they were apprenticed or on trial, and made provision that apprentices were not 'evil treated' by their employers, was once again largely ineffective as there were no means of enforcement. For a good commentary on both this Report> and on the early endeavours of the Society for Superseding the Necessity of Climbing Boys, when William Wilberforce pleaded with a sympathetic London audience 'to manifest the same humanity for the sons of their own country that they had for the children of Africa', see George L. Phillips's England's climbing boys. A history of the long struggle to abolish child labor in chimney-sweeping> (1949).

Letter acknowledging payment from the Paris bookseller Debure for Les Roses, part 30]. Paris, 18 February 1824. 4to (24.5 x 18.5 cm). Autograph letter, signed, written in brown ink on paper, with a note in a different hand recording a related payment.

      - A signed autograph letter by Pierre-Joseph Redouté, acknowledging his reciept of 30 francs from "Monsieur Debure libraire" for the 30th and final part of Les Roses, Redouté's most famous work, which was published in installments between 1817 and 1824. This must be the Paris bookseller Jean-Jacques Debure (1765-1853) or his younger brother Marie-Jacques Debure (1767-1847), who were "libraires du Roi et de la Bibliotheque du Roi" from 1821 to 1830. The book was printed and published by Firmin Didot. Oddly, an addition by a different hand below left notes "payé le 26 fevrier" (paid 26 February). Perhaps Redouté is writing to Firmin Didot and he was to reimburse Debure for this expense. It in any case suggests that Debure is not merely buying copies of the book to sell but was involved in the publication of Redouté's Les Roses in some manner. In fine condition, with only a small piece of paper stuck to the top right corner, not approaching the text.

All but the large map and plate 2bis [ the general map of Greece that had appeared in previous editions] unfolded single page plates, with good margins Jean-Jacques Barthélemy 1716 – 1795) was a French writer and numismatist. Barthélemy was the author of a number of learned works on antiquarian subjects, but the great work on which his fame rests is Voyage du jeune Anarcharsis en Grèce, first published in 1787. He had begun it in 1757 and had been working on it for thirty years. The hero, a young Scythian descended from the famous philosopher Anacharsis, is supposed to repair to Greece for instruction in his early youth, and after making the tour of her republics, colonies and islands, to return to his native country and write this book in his old age, after the Macedonian hero had overturned the Persian empire. In the manner of modern travellers, he gives an account of the customs, government, and antiquities of the country he is supposed to have visited. A copious introduction supplies whatever may be wanting in respect to historical details, while various dissertations on the music of the Greeks, on the literature of the Athenians, and on the economy, pursuits, ruling passions, manners, and customs of the surrounding states supply ample information on the subjects of which they treat. Modern scholarship has superseded most of the details in the Voyage, but the author himself did not imagine his book to be a register of accurately ascertained facts. Rather, he intended to afford to his countrymen, in an interesting form, some knowledge of Greek civilization. "Jean Jacques Barthélemy (1716-1795), also known as Abbé Barthélemy, was born into a well-to-do family in the South of France. Literatus, numismatist and author, he studied Philosophy, Theology and Classical Archaeology. Following a journey to Italy, he was inspired to write a novel whose main character is a young Scythian who wanders through the ancient Greek world of the fourth century BC, with flashbacks to the Archaic and Classical periods. Barthélemy started studying and writing on Antiquity in 1757 and his first book was published in 1788. He died at the age of 80, while working on the fourth edition of this remarkable literary work. Abbé Barthélemy studied the works of Greek and Roman authors and meticulously annotated on his maps the information he extracted. He relied too on the well-documented investigations that J. Foucherot and M.G.F.A. Choiseul-Gouffier had made on the spot, thus complementing his fictional work with accurate representations of the most important locations and battlefields. This multi-volume work – both a fictional recreation of an era and a travel narrative presenting an idyllic panorama of the ancient world, illustrated with maps and drawings by Barbié de Bocage – fuelled the public's interest in ancient scholarship. Thus it became a best-seller of the time, and was republished repeatedly into the nineteenth century.

Foligno: Feliciano Campitelli, , 1817. Edizione Seconda. Quarto (204 × 144 mm). Contemporary bottle green half roan, patterned paper boards, crudely marbled edges. 6 etched plates. A little light toning, some worming at the spine with trails penetrating through the text-block, largely marginal, but minor loss to text and plates, rear hinge cracked but holding, remains very good. First edition to include the section on underwater navigation, illustrated with a wonderful etching of a submarine propelled by oars, including a cut-away view. Count Gaetano Marchetti Tomassi (1774?1857), a nobleman born in Foligno near Perugia, was an amateur scientist. He devised one of several methods of squaring the circle, which constitutes the first part of the first treatise of the present book, the second part containing a discussion on conical sections. The most interesting part, however, is the second treatise, where the author proposes a new model of submarine, moved by the tides and able to submerge and resurface with the use of a mechanism similar to the swimbladder of fish. Marchetti Tomassi claims to have first described this boat in a publication issued in Ancona in 1800, though in a very imperfect form. Apparently a boat built to those specifications was given a trial at Rouen, under the eye of Napoleon. Thus Marchetti Tomassi anticipated Fulton at least in the concept of a submarine, though he does not appear to have heard of him. Marchetti proposes military applications for his submarine, though he has no conception of a torpedo and only mentions the use of classical artillery kept dry in his submarine.

        William Lambert - 1816/7 - 3rd Edition

Hi, This lot is a paperback copy of the Third Edition of William Lamberts ""Instructions and Rules for playing the Nobel Game of Cricket as practised by the most eminent players"" Published in the Spring of 1817 (before May) so nearly 200 years old. This paperback does not have the original covers or the frontispiece but other than that it is complete and checked against Roger Hancocks guide. The front cover (title page) has tape to the left but the book is badly shaken and could do with new tape or to be rebound as it is very loose indeed, hence the tiny price.

Rothe), Fr.
