        Über antike Glasmosaik.

Berlin: in der Mauerischen Buchhandlung, 1817. Folio (313 x 208 mm). Lithographed title with decorative vine border, 22 pages, 6 engraved plates illustrating 8 glass objects, all very finely painted in gouache, the last two plates each with 2 small figures; bound without the seventh uncolored plate, plates 1 and 2 bound in in reverse order. Light foxing to title. Contemporary glazed turquoise wrappers (backstrip split); cloth folding case. Provenance: Prince Friedrich Karl Alexander of Prussia (1801-1883), crowned inkstamp on title (Karl PruPr).*** Only complete edition, privately printed in fewer than ten copies, fine association copy of an exquisitely illustrated treatise on ancient mosaic glass by an important antiquarian and collector. Minutoli provides detailed descriptions of the objects illustrated in pages 5-9. The rest of the text, which reproduces portions of a lecture delivered by Martin Heinrich Klaproth in 1798 to the Royal Academy of Sciences, contains descriptions of probable production methods, including chemical analyses of the methods used to create, apply, and fix the colors, and comparisons to other known examples. Minutoli notes that these "scarce art objects" were passed unmentioned in older treatises on the art of antiquity, possibly because so few survived, and because those few examples that had been found, "showpieces" (Prunkstücke) in private art collections, remained unnoticed until the late 18th century. The painstakingly minute gouache-work required to reproduce the colors and designs of the original glass objects, carried out by an unnamed but highly skilled artist, provides many details not supplied by the underlying engravings, making of each engraving a veritable miniature painting. The time and expense entailed by this method forced production to cease after only a few copies, as explained in Minutoli's introduction to his later work on the same subject, Über die Anfertigung und die Nutzanwendung der farbigen Glaeser (Berlin, 1836, illustrated with color and black and white lithographs): "only 5 copies were published, because the endless delicacy of the patterns made the coloring of the plates too onerous" (... sind nur fünf Exemplare ins Publikum gekommen, weil die unendliche Feinheit der [sic] Muster das Coloriren der Platten zu sehr erschwerte). (As OCLC, KVK and COPAC locate exactly five copies of this edition, not including this one, that figure may be considered approximate.) Born in Geneva of an originally Luccan family, Minutoli became an officer in Prussian army. Partly self-taught (as a cadet, bored with the curriculum, he taught himself Greek, Latin, Italian and English), he became a student and collector of the arts of antiquity. After a research voyage to Egypt in 1820, financed by the Prussian government, Minutoli's Egyptian collection, containing 55 papyri as well as sculptures and mummies, was purchased by the state and formed the foundation for the Ägyptisches Museum in Berlin. The list of the author's honorifics on the title opens with "Major General and Governor of Prince Karl of Prussia." The present copy belonged to his charge, Prince Karl himself, third son of King Friedrich Wilhelm III (whose second son, the future emperor Wilhelm I, Minutoli also tutored). Presumably the few copies printed were distributed to dignitaries. The work is dedicated to Princess Marie Anne of Hesse-Homburg, wife of Prince Karl's uncle, Prince Wilhelm of Prussia. The title represents an early use of lithography. An earlier edition of the text, published in 1815, contained only two plates, one colored and one uncolored. I locate the following copies of this edition: Univ. of Kansas, Leipzig Univ., BnF, Danish Union Cat (7 pl.), and Frankfurt Univ., and 3 copies of the 1815 edition: Corning Museum of Glass, London Society of Antiquaries, and Strasbourg Bib. Nat. & Univ. (lacking the colored plate). On the author cf. Neue Deutsche Biographie 17 (1994), art. by H. Nehls, 549-551 [online].

A SKETCH OF MY FRIEND'S FAMILY. Intended to suggest some practical hints on Religion and Domestic Matters.

v, 150, [1 Errata] pages. Engraved frontispiece of a mother teaching her child to read the bible.Recent half calf over marbled boards; red gilt label to spine. 12mo. First edition. Some light browning and spotting; else a very good copy. The B.L. has the second edition, which was issued in 1818, but the first edition is quite scarce. Nor may it be pressing the vain expectations of an author, beyond the limits of possibility, if the writer indulges the thought, that whilst the mother listens to the simple tale, primarily intended for the daughter's eye, perhaps she may not disdain to glean some practical hint from this humble legend, framed to recommend the nameless charms of female excellence.         Rosa alba Regalis

1817 - This exceptionally rare, large folio stipple engraving is from Pierre Joseph Redoute's Les Roses. The work was published in Parisby Firmin Didot in 1817. The large paper rose engravings were believed to have only been printed perhaps 15 times and thus are quite impressive and noteworthy. The text was written by Claude Antoine Thory.Redoute's name is synonymous with beauty and in the world of botanical art he is known as the best. The work proved to be not only outstanding in terms of its beauty but also for its scientific merits. Many of the images were after Thory's personal collection as well as the rose garden of the Empress Josephine's garden at Malmaison. Redoute and Thory described almost all of the important roses that were known in their time. Lawalree describes the text as being 'of outstanding importance to both botanists and horticulturalists.Redoute's fame is due in large part to his diligent effort to perfect the use of stipple engraving. This labor intensive, and therefore expensive, technique creates subtle yet stunning variations of color making it superior to the engraving alone. Each plate was created using the 'a la poupee' process in which the color was applied before the printing. Hand-finished coloring was painstakingly applied after printing.Redoute was renowned for his artistic ability and tutored such people as Queen Marie-Antoinette, Empress Josephine, Marie-Louise, and Queen Marie-Amelie. Redoute influenced a breadth of artists that followed him including Turpin, Poiteau, Bessa, and Prevost. Redoute is widely considered the finest botanical illustrator of the early 19th century, if not throughout history. The process of stipple engraving and color printing give the Redoute Rose prints their luminous quality. Stippling is an etching process that employs dots instead of lines to form the image, which is then color printed by applying colored inks directly to the copper plate for each impression. The use of colored inks, greens and browns to print the stems and leaves, and reds and pinks to print the flowers, create a more luminous print by eliminating the necessity to paint watercolor over a back inked image. ---- Overall Excellent Condition. There may be a few minor imperfections to be expected with age. Please review the image carefully for condition and contact us with any questions.

Essay on the Principle of Population

1817. Signed. MALTHUS, Thomas Robert. An Essay on the Principle of Population; Or, A View of Its Past and Present Effects on Human Happiness; with An Inquiry into Our Prospects Respecting the Future Removal or Mitigation of the Evils Which It Occasions. London: John Murray, 1817. Three volumes. Octavo, contemporary full diced brown calf rebacked with original elaborately gilt-decorated spines laid down, burgundy morocco spine labels. $2800.Scarce 1817 edition of a foundational work in modern economics, from the library of renowned bibliographer G.R. Redgrave, co-author of the Short Title Catalogue (STC), featuring his key notation in Volume I: “This is the best edition of this famous work as it contains much addiitonal matter, and many alterations at the hand of the author,” handsomely bound in contemporary calf.“Malthus was one of the founders of modern economics. His Essay was originally the product of a discussion on the perfectibility of society with his father, [who] urged him to publish. Thus the first edition (published anonymously) was essentially a fighting tract, but later editions were considerably altered and grew bulkier as Malthus defended his views against a host of criticsÂ… The Essay was highly influential in the progress of thought in early 19th-century Europe [and] his influence on social policy was considerableÂ… Both Darwin and Wallace clearly acknowledged Malthus as a source of the idea of ‘the struggle for existence” (PMM 251). Following the initial 1798 edition, “in 1803 Malthus published under his own name the stout quarto that embodies his mature views of his subject. The author confesses in his preface that he had taken too gloomy a view of human nature in his first essayÂ… The achievement of Malthus was the exposition of the theory of population; and his name has been associated so closely with this theory that, like DarwinÂ’s, it has added a new adjective to the language of civilized peoples” (Palgrave II:670-1). Fifth edition: “with important additions.” Kress B6974. Garrison & Morton 1693. Goldsmiths 21761. From the library of highly respected bibliophile Gilbert R. Redgrave, with his bookplates. Redgrave co-authored with Pollard The Short Title Catalogue of English Books, 1475-1640 (STC), a foundational bibliography. The son of artist Richard Redgrave, Gilbert was also a major art critic, architect and author. As is evidenced by this seminal work, Redgrave often wrote learned bibliographical notes in important volumes from his library. With his date of “London. 1885,” Redgrave writes in the blank fly leaf of Volume I his informed notation on this key 1817 edition: “This is the best edition of this famous work, as it contains much additional matter, and many alterations at the hand of the author. In order to complete the previous editions, four in number, the added matter was published as an extra volume. The replies to M. Weyland and M. Graham in the Appendix [III:388-428] are important. The work passed through six editions in the authorÂ’s lifetime, viz. 1798, 1803, 1806, 1807, 1817 and 1826.” Minor marginalia to front pastedowns.Interiors generally fresh with light scattered foxing, some expert restoration and age-wear to binding. A most desirable extremely good copy, scarce in contemporary boards.

        Natural History

1817. BUFFON, Count de. A Natural History, General and Particular… Translated from the French by William Smellie. A New Edition Corrected and Enlarged. to Which is Added A History of Birds, Fishes, Reptiles and Insects… By Henry Augustus Chambers. London: Richard Evans, 1817. Two volumes. Tall quarto (9 by 11 inches), contemporary full tree calf, elaborately gilt-decorated spines, raised bands, black morocco spine labels, marbled endpapers. $3800.1817 two-volume edition, of the first English translation of Buffon’s magnum opus, with the important translation of Scottish naturalist William Smellie, this corrected and enlarged edition also featuring Chambers’ History of Birds, Fishes, Reptiles and Insects, with frontispiece of Buffon in each volume, containing 52 beautiful hand-colored engravings, scarce in contemporary tree calf.“Natural history, prior to Buffon, had all the earmarks of an avocation, a hobby. Buffon is the one who raised it to the status of a science” (Mayr, 336). First translated into English in 1781 this work of Buffon provides, for the first time, “a complete survey of natural history in a popular form… in which he outlines a satisfactory account of the history of our globe… His belief in the mutability of species implied clearly some preparation for the thought of Darwin… Buffon was the first to present the universe as one complete whole and to find no phenomenon calling for any but a purely scientific explanation” (PMM 198). For the naturalist, Buffon’s History was “a splendid and well-illustrated account, and was widely used and copied from, [since it] illustrated animals from remote parts of the world” (Knight, 92). See Genet-Varcin & Roger 207; Nissen 160; Norman 369. Volume I with contemporary owner signature of Edward L’Estrange to verso of title page. Occasional faint marginalia.Text and plates generally fresh with light scattered foxing and a few minor expert paper repairs, mostly marginal; expert restoration to attractive contemporary full calf-gilt bindings. Scarce.

Philadelphia: Caleb Richardson, 1817. Small octavo (measures 5 by 8 inches), period-style full sheep gilt, red morocco spine label, uncut. $1600.First edition of Birkbeck's controversial work, an important influence in pointing emigrants to the west and establishing America as ""the land of plenty—triggering ""a new battlefield for the contest of the image of the United States""—a scarce uncut copy.To Birkbeck the American west ""was a place to escape the dead weight of European history."" Born in England, he counted Lafayette among his friends and ""corresponded with George Washington in the 1790s, politely declining the President's invitation to be the manager of Mount Vernon."" On emigrating to America, Birkbeck and George Flower founded ""an 'English Prairie' settlement…in late 1817, months before Illinois became the westernmost state in the Union…The English Prairie was…a new battlefield for the contest of the image of the United States…Throughout his Notes…Birkbeck emphasized a dichotomy between 'old America' and 'new America'. The Allegheny Mountains were no obstacle but rather a gateway to new Atlantis unspoiled by European religious or political hierarchies"" (Eaton, Anglo-American Paper War, 93-95). ""One of the most interesting and instructive books that have appeared for many years….What bounds has Nature set to the progress of this mighty nation?…[S]he is a power in spite of us, rapidly rising to supremacy"" (Edinburgh Review, June 1818, 120-137). Copies were issued with the plates on India paper and also in etched outline. Some large-paper copies have the plates in three states. More sought after than the Martial Achievements, it is becoming uncommon". (Tooley p. 234-5). "Collectors should note that evidence of early state in this book can be found in the title-page vignette, originally issued uncoloured, and coloured only in later issues. The book was reprinted as late at 1840, copies having been seen with watermarks of the date." (Abbey, Life. p. 287).         Papers written in opposition to the Union Canal.

Leith, William Reid & Co., 1817. 8vo., 114 + (2), + (115) - 118, lightly toned, tiny hole to p.17, recent marbled boards lettered on spine. First edition: rare. [OCLC & COPAC together locate copies only at Aberdeen + NLS + Bodleian.] Kress B.7012. A collection of papers by the Convenery of the Trades of Leith, declaring their opposition to the connection of the port of Leith with the Union Canal, which was still under construction. They took the view that it would give even more business to the subscribers who were running the canal trade as a monopoly, with the tariffs limited only by the tariffs of land transport and that Leith would lose its position as the sea port of the Scottish capital. ?The prospect held out of carrying the canal to Leith at some future period, must, it is feared, even independent of the contingencies alluded to, end in disappointment. Almost every avenue by which a canal can be carried to Leith, is already shut up with buildings, and every day such an undertaking becomes more and more difficult, so that in a few years it will be nearly impracticable? (p. 12). The traders succeeded in not having the Union Canal extended directly to Leith. The Canal was opened, some 30 years after the first plans, connecting the Clyde with the North Sea via Lochrin Basin, preserving much of the trade of Leith.
