Rosa Rubiginosa nemoralis / L'Eglantine des bois [Small-flowered Eglantine]

Paris: Firmin Didot, 1817-1824. Stipple engraving, printed in colours and finished by hand, engraved by Langlois. Very good condition. 14 3/8 x 10 3/4 inches. More than with any other painter, Redouté's flowers are alive, and always shown at the ephemeral moment of their greatest beauty. Pierre-Joseph Redouté was one of the world's great flower painters. Born into a family that had been painters for at least two generations, Redouté went to Paris in 1782 with his brother where they worked as scene painters for the Théâtre Italien. Redouté painted flowers in his spare time. The search for subjects led him to the Jardin du Roi and eventually to Gerard van Spaendonck who made him an assistant. While at the Jardin du Roi, Redouté came to know Charles-Louis L'Heritier, an amateur botanist and writer of independent means. He gave Redouté a full-time job as an illustrator, instructing him in plant anatomy. Redouté's scientific understanding of plants contributed greatly to the clarity of his depictions. But it was Redouté's work in stipple engraving and colour printing that was to be of the greatest importance. Stippling and the application of two or three colour inks to one plate were engraving innovations that Redouté brought to French printmaking, and these were brought to perfection in Les Roses from which this work comes.Redouté together with Claude-Antoine Thory, an ardent botanist and collector of roses, have together in Les Roses produced a work not only of great artistic merit, but also an invaluable scientific record as well. `Redouté and Thory knew, described and figured almost all the important roses known in their day. Included were many of the key ancestors of our present-day roses. The plates in Les Roses have artistic value, botanical and documentary value, both for the species and cultivars still surviving and for those that have disappeared' (Gisele de la Roche). The roses used as specimens for the work were taken from the collections of Thory, the Malmaison gardens, and from other collections around Paris. Many of the flowers were novelties in Redouté's time, and a number were dedicated to the memory of his friends and acquaintances, such as l'Héritier de Brutelle and Ventenat. Cf. Also containing bound-in strip, stating that the work will be translated into Greek. (4), III, 105, (4) pp.. Extremely scarce first edition of the first constitution for the Ionian Islands in Greek history since ancient times. This Ionian Islands state was the first Greek state to be founded. The Ionian Islands were perhaps already settled by the Greeks as early as 1000 BC. In the 4th century BC the islands were under the Macedon Empire, under the control of which they remained until 146 BC, when it was annexed by Rome; in about 250 AD the islands passed to Byzantine territories, were parceled out by the Latin empire, and the Venetians acquired most of the islands. In the 15th century when the Ottomans acquired most of Greece, the islands considered it best to accept Venetian rule, and they became the only part of the Greek-speaking world not to be under Ottoman rule. Due to Venetian influence, many people of the upper class spoke Italian, though Greek remained the main language. In 1797 Napoleon Bonaparte captured Venice, and the islands fell under French rule, where they more or less remained till the French were defeated by the British. A Treaty of Paris, in which the islands were turned into the "United States of the Ionian Islands" under British protection, was signed in 1815. In 1817 the islands were finally granted their first constitution, -by the British- a turning-point in the history of the Ionian Islands and Greece. This constitution given under the British Protectorate was voted by a constituent assembly in 1817, and was applied the following year. The administration was placed in the hands of a senate of six members and a legislative assembly of 40 members.Not in Graesse, not in Brunet

Corners and edges of boards bumped and some minor wear to capitals, otherwise very nice and clean. Also internally in excellent condition, w. almost no brownspotting. A few leaves w. marginal markings, all in weak pencil. Printed on good paper. XXXII, 224, (2, -errata) pp, 2 folded plates.. The very rare first edition of Ohm's first work, which actually laid the foundation for his career and gave him the opportunity of working as a scientist. The work was printed eight years before his first scientific paper, ("Vorläufige Anzeige des Gesetzes, nach welchem Metalle de Contakt-elektrizität leiten", 1825, which contained for the first time the original research that was to immortalize his name). The German physicist Georg Simon Ohm (1789 -1854), who later became famous for having established the fundamental relationship between voltage, current, and resistance, and thereby founding electrical circuit analysis (all based on what has ever since Ohm been known as "Ohm's Law"), was solidly educated in mathematics, physics, chemistry and philosophy by his very skilled autodidact father. From 1800 to 1805 Ohm attended the Erlangen Gymnasium, after which he attended the University of Erlangen for three years, until his father withdrew him and placed him in exile in Switzerland, because he was so dissatisfied with him wasting his scientific abilities; -Georg Ohm was primarily interested in dancing, billiards and ice skating. He then became a mathematics teacher in Gottstadt bei Nydau, and in 1809 he went to Neuchâtel for two years as a private teacher, although he would have preferred to follow Karl Christian von Langensdorf to Heidelberg to restart his mathematical studies. Langendorf, however, advised Ohm to study mathematics on his own and to read the works of Euler, Laplace and Lacroix, which he did. In 1811 Ohm returned to the University of Erlangen, where he received his PhD. He now taught as a Privatdozent for three semesters, but he could not advance and made almost no money, so he was forced to seek employment from the Bavarian government. The best position that he was offered was that of a teacher of mathematics and physics at a poor quality, low-prestige Realschule in Bamberg, where he stayed with great dissatisfaction for three years, until the school got closed down in March 1816. He was now assigned to teach a section of mathematics at another overcrowded and ill reputed school in Bamberg. During these years, Georg Ohm felt very unhappy with his position and realized that he had to do something to improve his merits in order to get out of Bamberg and have hopes to find a better post. And thus, he undertook the writing of his first work, the elementary geometry text, which was to prove his true abilities. Ohm sent the manuscript to King Wilhelm III of Prussia, and in 1817 he was offered the position of Oberlehrer of mathematics and physics at the recently reformed Jesuit Gymnasium at Cologne. This was a very good school, which was based on the ideals of proper scientific education and enthusiasm for learning and teaching, and it was this position that stimulated Ohm to seriously concern himself with physics which he had never done before. The physics lab was very well equipped , and Ohm could now devote himself to experimenting on physics."Ohm's fist work was an elementary geometry text, "Grundlinien..." which embodied his ideals on the role of mathematics in education. The student, he believed, should learn mathematics as if it were the free product of his own mind, not as a finished product imposed from without. Ideally, by fostering the conviction that the highest life is that devoted to pure knowledge, education should create a self-respect capable of withstanding all vicissitudes in one's external circumstances. One detects in these sentiments the reflection not only of his own early education but also of the years of isolation in Switzerland and of personal and intellectual deprivation of Bamberg. The resulting inwardness of Ohm's character and the highly intellectualized nature of his ideals of personal worth were an essential aspect of the man who would bring the abstractness of mathematics into the hiterto physical and chemical domain of galvanic electricity." (D.S.B., X, p. 187)

Leipzig, Johann Ambrosius Barth, 1817. 8vo. Contemporary half calf. Raised bands, gilt spine. Spine slightly rubbed."Annalen der Physik. Neue Folge. Hrsg. von Ludwig Wilhelm Gilbert", Bd. 56. Small stamps on verso of title-pages (2) and verso of plates. (12), 440 pp. a. 5 plates. The entire volume offered. Fraunhofer's paper: pp. 264-313 a. 2 engraved plates. Tables in the text. Internally clean and fine.. First appearance of this milestone paper, which CREATED THE SCIENCE OF SOLAR AND STELLAR CHEMISTRY, by observing and interpreting the dark lines of the solar spectrum.Fraunhofer plotted 576 such lines, noted the constancy of relative position irrespective of the light source, moon, stars, flames. The paper offered here, as printed in Gilbert's "Annalen", was PUBLISHED BEFORE it appeared in Denkschriften der "Münchner Akad. der Wiss. auf die Jahre 1814 und 1815". Gilbert's note to the paper: "Frei ausgezogen aus den noch nicht ausgegebenen Denkschriften...." (The paper was read for the Bayerish Akademie, München in 1815 and only published in Denkschriften two years later). In 1802, William Wollaston saw in a spectrum of the sun something that, by strange chance, nobody had ever seen before. The chief point of importance in his imperfect account is that the solar spectrum, as formed by a prism from light which has traversed a slit, is crossed by a series of dark lines. These lines have since become known as Fraunhofer Lines, because when Fraunhofer discovered them independently, he understood their nature and significance much better than Wollaston, who saw only seven lines, while Fraunhofer recorded 576. He measured the position of the more prominent lines, which he indicated by letters from A to K, determining their wavelength and showed that they all fell in the same portion of the spectrum, whether it was the direct light of the sun or the reflected light from the moon. His paper on the subject was ignored, and it remained for Kirchhoff around 50 years later (1859) to make a powerful instrument of these lines for chemists, physicists, and astronomers to state with certainty the chemical constitution of the heavenly bodies. On his tombstone is engraved "Approximavit sidera" (he approached the stars). The volume contains other important papers: Stromeyer, "Auffindung der Wahren Mischung des Kobaltglanzes und des Speiskobalts, und ihrer wesentlichen Verschiedenheit" and "Auffindung von Kobalt in den Meteor-Eisen", Chladni, Wollaston, Humphry Davy (in first German editions) etc.Dibner, Heralds of Science No 153. - Sparrow, Milestones of Science No 70. - Printing and the Mind of Man No. 278 a

Encyclopädie der philosophischen Wissenschaften im Grundrisse. Zum Gebrauch seiner Vorlesungen.

Heidelberg, (Druck und Papier von Brede in Offenbach), 1817. 8vo. Nice cont. cardboardbdg. w. title-label to back. Corners and capitals professionally restored. Hinges w. a bit of paper-loss. Occational brownspotting. Front free end-paper w. vast cont. annotations by former owner Fr. Selasinski.. The rare first edition of Hegel's immensely important work, the "Encyclopaedia of the Philosophical Sciences", by himself and his contemporaries considered his main work, and likewise an absolute main work of philosophy in general. Hegel is considered one of the four greatest philosophers of all times, and his contributions to philosophy are incomparable to other than perhaps those of Aristotle, Plato and Kant. In 1816 Hegel chose the professorship of philosophy at the University of Heidelberg, and here he taught his courses with great enthusiasm. He lectured no less than 16 hours a week, mostly over his own system, which is the object of this (chronologically speaking) third main work, generally just called the "Encyclopaedia".Hegel himself considered his "Encyclopedia" to be the most important of his works, and his contemporaries likewise judged it his actual main work. Hegel was considered the epitome of the great systematic thinker of the 19th century, and his "Encyclopaedia" forms the epitome of his work, at the same time as it, to his own mind, constitutes his greatest achievement. Hegel's main aim was to systematically comprise all spiritual and natural knowledge, and thus his philosophy peaks with his all-comprising Encyclopaedia, which remained of the greatest importance to himself throughout his life-time. He kept working on the book, and no less than three different altered editions appeared within his lifetime, the last in 1830, the year before he died, confirming his lasting devotion to this work. The book has belonged to one Friedrich Selasinski (perhaps a midshipman from the aristocracy), who has annotated the entire front free end-paper (ab. 1830)

Edinburgh: Ogle, Allardice & Thomson, 60pp., 1817.. Inscribed presentation copy from the author to John Gladstone (father of the Prime Minister, William Ewart Gladstone), modern boards old style. Kress B.6879. Not in Goldsmiths'. Not in NUC. A rare reply to Owen's plans with references to Hume and Godwin. Though respectful of Owen's philanthropy and good intentions, the review is highly critical of his plans believing them "useless or even hurtful, by mistaken view of human happiness, and the way of attainment."

Rosa Gallica caerulea. Rosier de Provins à feuilles bleuâtres

[Paris: Firmin Didot], 1817-1824. Stipple engraving printed in black, on ochre-tinted paper, by Eug. Talbaux, after Redouté, printed by Rémond. Very good condition. 14 x 10 1/2 inches. A very rare uncoloured 'connoisseur's' impression on ochre-tinted paper from the first edition of 'Les Roses': Redouté's most famous work, and perhaps the most celebrated flower book of all time The present uncoloured plate was printed on ochre paper as it was realized that this gave a pleasing effect. The ochre background enhances the subtle gradations of tone achieved using the stipple engraving technique and gives a unique opportunity to appreciate the unrivalled artistry of both Pierre-Joseph Redouté himself and the master-craftsman he employed to translate his watercolour into a print of the highest quality. Redouté learned, whilst on a visit to London, that the most successful impressions of stipple engravings came from well-used plates. A number of black plates would thus be struck to take the edge off the plate before printing in colours. Redouté's printers struck black impressions - always on a paper with a distinct ochre tint - from the plates, and these early impressions were then combined with later colour- printed examples to form the de luxe issues of 'Les Roses'.Redouté's 'Les Roses' was issued in four formats: a large paper folio with coloured plates, a large paper folio with the plates in two states, folio with coloured plates, and folio with the plates in two states (the present plate comes from this final de luxe form). Gavin Bridson and Donald Wendel, in their magisterial 'Printmaking in the service of botany' catalogue (Hunt Institute for Botanical Documentation, 1986, item 25) noted that Redouté 'For the interest of connoisseurs' included `a set of black plates as a parallel series to the usual color-printed versions' in 'special issues' of both the present work and his earlier 'Les Liliacées'. The number of these special issues that were produced is unfortunately not recorded but to judge from auction records over the past twenty-five years they are extremely rare: only four complete sets of 'Les Roses' in this format are recorded. The present print therefore comes from an edition that was severely limited, and is certainly much rarer than its colour- printed equivalent. Cf.Cleveland Collections 807; cf. Dunthorne 232; cf.
