YOUNG, John.
London, 1815. A set of 6 mezzotint engravings printed in colours and finished by hand. Framed and glazed. Overall size: 27 by 22 inches. A superb set of Turkish emperors from the series "Recueil des Portraits des Empereurs Ottomans". Arguably the greatest series of colour plates on the Ottoman Empire, with engravings after portraits by a Greek peasant ``who displayed such proofs of natural talent as to induce the Emperor Selim to patronise him''.Young's work was first commissioned and patronised by Selim III, but production was halted in 1807 when the Sultan was assassinated by the Janissaries. Mahmoud II became Sultan in 1808 and in 1810 he gave Young permission to continue publication.

Contemp. library details, in Latin, of St. Andrews University, & 'cancelled' stamp on verso. v.g.Almost certainly the FIRST ENGLISH appearance of these poems, translated from the Portuguese. In the preface the translator considers the identity of the original poet, highlighting the fact that Melodino is unrecorded in all records of Spanish and Portuguese literature. He adds Mr. Southey (a great authority on the poetry of the Iberian peninsular) knows 'no such name as Melodino'. Latterly the identity of Melodino has been confirmed as Francisco Manoel de Mello, 1608–1666, a career soldier, military historian, and poet. Henry Ingram
London - Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, and Brown, 1815. A very scarce copy of this poem by Henry Ingram. With a bookplate to front pastedown of one Frances Mary Richardson Currer. Currer (17851861) was a renowned book collector who was an extremely accomplished and amiable woman, and had the scholar's as well as the collector's love of books. She was unfortunately deaf, and although not unsociable, found among books the chief occupation of her life. Dibdin refers to her as being at the head of all female collectors in Europe. It was believed she had intended her library to remain as an heirloom at Eshton Hall, but the principal part was sold by Messrs. Sotheby in August 1862. The books, as is the case with this lovely example, contain an heraldic book-plate and are generally noticeable for their fine condition. First edition. Condition: In a full calf binding. Externally, generally smart with some slight wear to the backstrip and extremities. Joints are starting. Internally, firmly bound. Some scattered spotting, most prominently to first and last few pages, otherwise a clean and bright copy. Small (0. 5 by 0. 5) owner's stamp to front free endpaper. Overall: GOOD. Aristotle (pseud)
Printed by J. Kendrew York for the Booksellers 1815 - with a woodcut frontispiece and 8 woodcuts in the text, poorly printed, a few edges frayed with the loss of some letters on one leaf, some foxing and soiling, 2 of the woodcuts scribbled on in pencil, pp. [ii, half-title - reading 'A new and enlarged edition'] iv, 360, 12mo, contemporary half calf, flat spine gilt in compartments, black lettering piece lettered 'Milton', corners worn and lacking leather, sound, inscription inside front cover (see below). 'Second edition' means second Kendrew printed edition. This edition is not only rare, it has a most interesting ownership inscription. The inside front cover is inscribed in pencil 'Miss Chester, Beach Lane, Stretton . Given to her by her Grandma.' Liking this book as we do, we have had many copies in various editions, but we don't recall any with such a inscription, demonstrating grand-maternal solicitude. This may explain the Milton on the label.
