BAGGESEN, JENS:
+ Den opstandne Sang. Et Blomst. Hendes Kongelige Høihed Kronprindsesse Caroline helliget den 28de October. Kbhvn.: Trykt i Thieles Bogtrykkerie 1815. 28 + [4] s. DEVOTIONAL BROADSIDE.
Chartres: chez Garnier-Allabre, 1815. Broadsheet (378 x 310 mm.) on laid paper, deckle edges. Large central stencil- colored woodcut of Saint Solange, framed by letterpress text: a three-line title in large type, narrow bands of text on either side consisting of lyrics to a song about the Saint, and a litany, with imprint at bottom. A few innocuous short marginal tears, one small crease at center left, a small color smudge on imprint. Archivally matted. *** A fine impression, with bright contemporary coloring, of a Chartres devotional print with text, honoring the patron saint of the province of Berry, whose festival day is the 10th of May. The legend of the ninth-century Saint Solange describes her as a shepherdess from the village of Villemont (in the present-day department of the Cher) who had powers of healing the sick and chasing away evil by her mere presence, and who was accompanied at night by a bright star which lit her way in the dark. Her martyrdom came at the hands of a rapist on horseback, the son of the Count of Poitiers, who assaulted and then decapitated her in anger after her struggles pitched them both into a nearby stream. Her head is said to have uttered the name of Jesus three times, after which the body picked it up and carried it back to the village church before dying. The present simply cut but charming woodcut shows a more peaceful scene, with the Saint spinning wool under a flowering tree, a dog at her feet, in the background grazing sheep and a distant village, with a divine ray blazing down at her and angels in the clouds. This scene shows the district in Leipzig in the aftermath of the battle. Cossacks from the Russian forces are stripping a body, while other casualties await collection. The appalling conditions in Leipzig during and after the battle, arising from the great numbers of wounded and famished soldiers, are set out in Horne's text through quotations from Frederic Shoberl's Narrative of the most remarkable events which occurred in and near Leipzig, immediately before, during, and subsequent to, the sanguinary series of engagements between the allied armies and the French (1814): 'The city was covered with carcasses, and the rivers obstructed with dead bodies. ROBERT KIRK, MINISTER AT ABERFOILL
EDINBURGH. 1st Edition, 100 copies only, (24cm), 4to. vi, 97 p. ; 25 cm. Contemporary leather boards, rebacked. COMPLETE CONDITION: VERY GOOD. An excellent copy in original leather boards with a modern leather spine (probably late 20th Century) and andpapers (made from high quality laid paper with a 'Glastonbury' watermark). Generally excellent internally with just a few marks and spots here and there. There is an interesting inscription along with a signature dated 1836. 'Edited by Sir W. Scott - What did the printers mean by stating that only 100 copies were re-printed, when the prefatory notice explicitly mentions that the work was printed from a manuscript copy in the Advocates' Library!' (see notes below). There are no other inks. A very nice, solid copy of a very scarce and important folkloric work by a fascinating 17th Century figure. Original Title: AN ESSAY OF THE NATURE AND ACTIONS OF THE SUBTERRANEAN (AND, FOR THE MOST PART,) INVISIBLE PEOPLE, HERETOFOIR ***************** Robert Kirk (1644 ¿ 1692) was a minister, Gaelic scholar and folklorist, best known for the present work: a treatise on fairy folklore, witchcraft, ghosts, and second sight, a type of extrasensory perception described in the main by the people of the Scottish Highlands. Folklorist Stewart Sanderson and mythologist Marina Warner call Kirk's collection of supernatural tales, gathered from Gaels (Gaelic-speakers), one of the most important and significant works on the subject of fairies and second sight. In the late 1680s, Kirk travelled to London to help publish one of the first translations of th … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Porta, Carlo]
[Click Below for Full Description]
