The grounds of an opinion on the policy of restricting the importation of foreign corn; intended as an appendix to 'Observations on the Corn Laws.'

London: John Murray and J. Johnson & Co. 1815. 8vo., (2) + 48pp., some minor staining to title-page, otherwise a fine copy in recent blue morocco-backed marbled boards, gilt lettering to spine, ink note to pastedown 'Ex Libris Brent Graton-Maxfield'.> First edition: uncommon. Goldsmiths 21177. Kress B.6535. Einaudi 3672. Mattioli 2214. In the first of two tracts (Observations on the effects of the corn laws,> 1814), Malthus compared the advantages and disadvantages that might be expected to result from continuing the Corn Laws on the footing on which they then stood, and from laying still greater restrictions on importation. His leanings were, however, obviously in favour of higher duties; and in this, his second tract, he strongly recommends the latter. One of his principal arguments is the increase which he alleges a fall in the value of corn would generate in the value of money, and consequently, in the pressure of taxation. This pamphlet provoked a private response from Horner against his conclusions, later published in Malthus's memoirs, and a public one from Ricardo in An essay on the influence of a low price of corn on the profits of stocks .....> published the same year.

A CURSORY VIEW OF SPANISH AMERICA, PARTICULARLY THE NEIGHBOURING VICE-ROYALTIES OF MEXICO AND NEW-GRENADA, CHIEFLY INTENDED TO ELUCIDATE THE POLICY OF AN EARLY CONNECTION BETWEEN THE UNITED STATES AND THOSE COUNTRIES

Georgetown: Richards and Mallory, 1815. Dbd. Stain and chip near foredge of titlepage, barely affecting title. Uniform light tanning. About very good. In a half morocco box. An interesting early manifestation of the principles of the Monroe Doctrine. Robinson advocates quick action in foiling the joint designs of England and Spain on the new territory of Louisiana, citing evidence that the British have been supplying Indians with arms and munitions in Spanish-controlled Florida. He claims that, should Spain unite with England, the last vestiges of her independent colonial power will be forfeited, and that this forfeiture would clear the way for the United States to rid herself of any remaining European authority in the New World. An aggressive argument, born out of the crisis of the invasion of Louisiana by the British at the close of the War of 1812. Robinson would later be involved in various conspiracies in Texas and northern Mexico, including the attempt of Xavier Mina to seize Texas. Not in Servies. SABIN 72200. SHAW & SHOEMAKER 35799.

Struggles through life, exemplified in the various travels and adventures in Europe, Asia, Africa, and America, of John Harriott, Esq.

London: Pr. for the author 12mo (18 cm, 7.1"). 3 vols. I: Frontis., xvxv, [1], 443, [1] pp. II: xii, 428, [2] pp. III: vii, [1], 479, [1] pp. (lacking pp. 69–72); 1 fold. plt., 1 plt.. 1815 Autobiography of => one of the founders of the Thames police, a clever and independent mariner who went adventuring around the world before settling down to become an Essex justice of the peace and eventually Resident Magistrate of the Thames River Police (a.k.a. the Marine Police Force, sometimes called England's first official police force). Here he looks back on his remarkably varied youthful escapades, including travelling in the merchant-service, visiting "the Savages in North America," meeting the King of Denmark, serving in the East India Company's military service, and narrowly escaping such dangers as tigers, poisonous snakes, floods, fires, and scamming fathers-in-law. If the narrator is to be believed, the two issues that caused him the chiefest distress in life were pecuniary difficulties and other people's unchivalrous treatment of women. He also has much to say about law and business in the New World and the Old, slavery in America, forcible incarceration in private madhouses (with excerpts from a first-person account of such), and the nature of farming in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, and Virginia, as well as the state of affairs in Washington, DC, and, of course, the history of the creation of the Thames police. Vol. I opens with a steel-engraved portrait of the author, done by Henry Cook after Hervé; vol. III is illustrated with an => oversized, folding plate of a water-engine intended for millwork, devised by the author, and a plate of another of his inventions: the automated "chamber fire escape", which enables anyone to lower him- or herself from a high window. This is the third edition, following the first of 1807. Contemporary speckled sheep, spines with gilt-stamped leather title-labels; vol. I with joints and extremities refurbished, vols. II and III with spines and edges rubbed, old strips of library tape reinforcing spine heads. Ex–social club library: 19th-century bookplates, call number on endpapers, pressure-stamp on title-pages, vols. II and III with paper shelving labels at top of spines (vol. I showing signs of now-absent label). Vol. I title-page with offsetting from frontispiece; vol. III with pp. 69–72 excised (two leaves of a rather long religious-themed letter from Harriott to his son) and with upper portion of one leaf crumpled, reinforced some time ago. Some light age-toning, intermittent small spots of foxing and ink-staining, pages generally clean. => Utterly absorbing.

        Le Retour de L'Eglise

Paris: Rue Coquillere, No. 26, 1815. Colour-printed aquatint. Printed on wove paper. In excellent condition. Image size: 11 3/4 x 16 3/4 inches. A wonderful colour-printed impression of this charming print depicting the jovial celebration of a country wedding. Genre painting came back into favour when the Academy admitted Watteau's "The Pilgrimage to Cythera" to its ranks in 1717. From that point on, a fashion for decorative genre subjects swept the country, influencing an entire generation of French artists. This stunning print is a wonderful example of French pastoral painting at this period as well as a superb example of French colour printing. Early colour printing was developed as a means of reproducing the effects of painting in oils. This spectacular print exemplifies the single-plate colour printing technique used in England, then adopted in France, at the close of the eighteenth century. The effect is achieved by inking a single plate with several different colours by using a rag stump, this process is known as a la poupée . The combination of colour printing and hand-colouring adds to vivacious character of the image, the happy dance-like promenade from the wedding to the celebration.

[Manuscript] Bulletin A son Excellence le Duc de Feltre...

manuscript: Bruxelles, 19 Juin 1815. MANUSCRIPT, one page, 17.5 x 15 cm. Baron van der Capellen was sent to Brussels by the Dutch King William I to represent Duttch interests in the coalition opposing Napoleon. Upon the allied victory at Waterloo, he sent this hurried note to Henri Jacques Guillaume Clarke (1765-1818), who, for his services as French General, Napoleon made Minister of War and 1st Duke of Feltre. As Napoleon's fortunes failed, Clarke's realistic advice was resented and he was replaced as minister. He then turned to serve Louis XVII, also as minister of war. He was with the King in Ghent when Napoleon moved his army into Belgium. This note from one high functionary to another was to inform Louis XVII that he was again King of France. This important document had been pasted onto cardboard and was removed and restored by Elizabeth Coombs. Stock#MsFlat001.

Changing Horses to the Mail Coach

[N.p., but London, 1815. Aquatint printed in brown, coloured by hand, by R. Havell. (Trimmed to the image and mounted). A classic Pollard image from the great age of coaching. James Pollard was the youngest son of the London engraver and print-seller Robert Pollard. He began work at the age of fifteen as a painter but quickly turned to engraving as well. In the 1820s his coaching scenes became both fashionable and lucrative. From 1821 he exhibited a small number of pictures at the Royal Academy and the British Institution which brought him more patrons. Between 1830 and 1840, Pollard also painted a number of racing pictures and some of the earliest scenes of steeplechasing. In all his work he took great pains over accuracy. " Changing Horses to the Mail Coach is the first of four prints after James Pollard illustrating this familiar scene on the road" (Selway, The Regency Road, p. 50). Mail was transported in Great Britain via Royal Mail coaches beginning in 1784. They traveled over ever improving roads, thanks to "macadamized" roads, until 1838 when the task was given to the railways. The changing of the mail horses is said to have been accomplished in later years in as little as 45 seconds. Selway James Pollard , p. 40; Selway, Regency Road I.

CHIKYU ZENZU RYAKUSETSU: EXPLANATION OF THE COMPLETE MAP OF THE WORLD. Revised V

[Edo 1815, Tohto]. Brown stitched stiff wrs., 3 vol. set. woodcut printed & illustrated on hand-made Washi paper, many. illustrations, minor rubbing to covers, contents clean, no. worming, 4th. edition. FIRST AND ONLY EDITION. BY JAPAN'S LEONARDO DA VINCI, THE RENAISSANCE MAN This important work describes the universe in geocentric and heliocentric terms. Explains the movement of the sun around the earth, and the reason for day and night as the sun travels along its elliptic. This is the 4th and last edition of the book, Shiba wrote the first 2 volumes, the 3rd volume elaborated on the descriptions of countries, bizarre tales of the customs & more foreign peoples. With a crude view of two men from Coromandel and a couple from Greenland, with foreign soldiers, American steamship [Kuro Fune or Black Ship]. The text of vol. 3, likely written after 1815, as it mentions the defeat of Napoleon. * This work enjoyed considerable popularity as it discussed foreign countries, established borders, capital cities, world geography, and even discussed "California." Much of the text was derived from Buy's Encyclopedia & Valentijn's geography. *** WHO WAS SHIBA KOKAN: Shiba Kokan [1747-1818], also known as Suzuki Harushige was an eminent Japanese painter and printmaker of the Edo period, famous both for his Western-style yoga paintings, in imitation of Dutch oil painting styles, methods, and themes, which he painted under the studio name of "Kokan." His Ukiyo-e primarily forgeries of the works of Suzuki Harunobu, which he created under the name Harushige. Kokan did not seek to hide or disguise his forgeries, and in fact is said to have boasted of his ability to forge the great master so well. . Kokan was known as Japan's Leonardo da Vinci, a renaissance man, a prolific author & writer publishing some 33 works in all. A most fascinating work and superbly illustrated resource on early Japan by an astute and most scholarly intellectual observer. All of his books and maps are important works and have earned great respect. . Above all, Shiba was a Rangakusha or a student of Dutch Learning, as well as being a very important and great artist, scholar, geographer, a celebrated innovator and pioneer in the Westernization of Japan and an august Renaissance man of Japan. He was responsible for explaining the workings of the sun, earth and moon, and has always been considered the "father of Japanese cartography." . He also learned from the Dutch in Nagasaki about the principles of Western perspective, until then an unknown to the Japanese. He acquired knowledge of copper-engraving, oil-painting, and produced Japan's first copper-etched graphic illustrations. . Shiba was a student of Suzuki Harunobu, So Shiseki, and Hiraga Gennai, and mastered a number of very different styles, and was also a great innovator, exploring new methods and styles on his own. He became the first Japanese artist, in 1783, to use copper plate engraving. Following Harunobu's death in 1770, Kokan placed Harunobu's signature on a number of his own prints, which were supposedly accepted as true works of Harunobu at the time. . Today, art historians have noted the distinctive calligraphic style of the faked Harunobu signature, the use of Western-style perspective, and the somewhat less delicate figures in works by "Harushige" [Kokan]. . Like many other Edo period artists, Kokan used a great variety of other names at various points in his career, though "Shiba Kokan," "Suzuki Harushige", and close variations on those appear far more often. Variations include Shiba Shun and Suzuki Shun [Shun being an alternate reading of the same character that forms the Haru of Harunobu or Harushige], while his other names include Ando, Kichijiro, Katsusaburo, Fugen-dojin, Kungaku, Rantei, and Shunparo. . Kokan lived in Nagasaki, and studied under Dutch physicians and scholars [Rangaku Dutch studies] in addition to his pursuits as an artist. Interested in astronomy in particular, he wrote and illustrated a book on Copernicus' theories, entitled Kopperu Temmon Zukai, Illustrated Explanation of Copernicus' Astronomy. He acquired knowledge of copper engraving, oil-painting and learned astronomy, history and geography, authoring several famous books. He has always been considered the Da Vinci of Japan, a renaissance man. *** ILLUSTRATIONS This set contains some 6 double-page and 8 single-page wood cut illustrations. The subject of these include a "KURO FUNE" or an American black [steam] ship, several hemispheric views of the earth, North & South America, California is also discussed, how the sun casts a moon shadow on the earth, orbit of the planets, the seasons, shooting star, including elaborate descriptions of countries, foreign peoples, a couple from Greenland, and two men from Coromandel &c. *** EDITION: This edition does not state date, publisher nor place, but being a 3 volume set, we defer to French, on p.127 & 169 who cites this as the 4th edition, written after 1815, we can not find additional bibliographical evidence in any of the usual resources to confirm or contradict that impression. The first edition was published in 1797. Regardless, the 4th edition did indicate a developing interest in foreign countries among the Japanese and the continuing reputation of Shiba as a geographer. . Per French, p.127 "...first two [vols.] containing the complete text of the 1797 edition. Vol. three elaborated on the descriptions of countries, replacing factual geographical detail with extraordinary and often bizarre tales of the customs and mores of foreign peoples.         The principles of war, exhibited in the practice of the camp; and as developed in a series of General Orders of Field-Marshal the Duke of Wellington, K.G. &c. &c. &c. in the late campaigns on the Peninsula, with parallel Orders of George the Second, the Duke of Cumberland, the Duke of Marlborough, Earl of Albemarle, Lord Stair, General Wolfe, &c. &c. &c.

London: William Clowes. 1815*. 8vo., xxviii + 338 + xxxvii + (1)pp., occasional very minor rust mark or stain, with relevant, old, ms annotations on two pages, bookplate removed from front pastedown, contemporary half calf over marbled boards, extremities and joints rather worn, spine gilt and lettered but with some wear. Generally a good, sound, copy. First edition and really quite uncommon. Although not written or edited by Wellington himself, this clearly draws largely from an analysis of his recorded Orders in the second Peninsular campaign between 1809 and 1814. The hundreds of Orders, here reprinted, classified and indexed, provide a remarkable record of war management in the early 19th century. The Orders are grouped here in some 31 chapters, each with a distinct theme, the Orders themselves printed in chronological order. They cover such themes as discipline, the camp, working parties, ammunition, markets and provision, post and letters, chaplains, regimental schools, pay-master and pay, commissariat, hospitals, 'on the march', means of transport, baggage, convoys, public and private horses and mules, forage, 'the enemy's country', 'before the enemy', 'in action', 'after battle', police, law-martial, &c. &c. One feature of note is the clear sequence of instructions that local populations were to be treated with respect, that hay, grain and other vital provisions were to be paid for and that theft would not be tolerated. By way of example, a General Order was issued at Jaracejo, 16th August, 1809, thus: 'The soldiers are again positively prohibted to plunder bee-hives; any man found with a bee-hive in his possession will be punished'. * The editor's dedication to Wellington ('the Illustrious Hero') is dated June 27, 1815, a mere nine days after Waterloo.
