An Authentic Report Of The Trial Of Michael Stocks, Esq. For Wilful.

1815 - Fraud In The Yorkshire Coal Fields [Trial]. Stocks, Michael. An Authentic Report Of The Trial Of Michael Stocks, Esq. For Wilful And Corrupt Perjury, At The Yorkshire Lent Assizes, 1815. Before The Honourable Sir Alexander Thompson, Knt. Chief Baron Of His Majesty's Exchequer, And A Special Jury. Huddersfield: Sold by the Principal Booksellers in London; And the Booksellers of York, Leeds, Bradford, Huddersfield, Halifax, Sheffield, Wakefield, Rochdale, Manchester, &c. 1815. 116 pp. Octavo (8-1/4" x 5-1/4"). Stab-stitched pamphlet bound into nineteeth-century unlettered pebbled cloth. Light rubbing to extremities with light wear to spine ends, corners bumped, minor spotting to boards. Light toning to text, finger smudges and light foxing to a few leaves. A very good copy. * First edition, second issue (with the errata all corrected). Stocks was accused of stealing and selling 10,000 tons of coal from mines in Northowram, in the West-Riding of Yorkshire, he owned in partnership with two other men. Stocks was not convicted. The trial details the contractual history of the partnership, such contentious matters as the exact legal boundaries of neighboring mines and coal-pits and the nature of written and verbal agreements. This appears to be an unrecorded issue. OCLC locates no copies of this imprint. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Berlin Decker 1815 - (45,5 x 30,5 cm). (2) 10 S. Mit 2 Kupfertafeln und 2 doppelblattgroßen Tafeln in Aquatinta. Bedruckte Original-Broschur in bedruckter Original-Halbleinwand-Mappe.

First Edition, first issue (without the author's name) Royal 8vo, [viii], 154 pp, 76 plates, mostly aquatint but a few line engravings, all in fine original hand-colouring, watermarks are "J.Whatman 1815, (i.e. pre-publication), the plates are all in fine and bright impressions and very clean, contemporary tree calf, narrow floral roll-tool borders, fully gilt spine, red morocco title label on spine, (possibly not an English binding), a little damage at one corner otherwise in fine condition.Abbey notices two issues, one with Papworth's name on the title the other without but claims that no precedence has been established. His copy has the author's name but some of his plates are watermarked as late as 1818, whereas our copy, without the name, has only "1815" watermarks, indicating that it must be the earlier issue.

        The Works.

London: John Murray,, 1815-9. 7 volumes, small octavos (155 × 93 mm). Contemporary tree calf, spines in compartments with gilt rules and titles direct, speckled edges. Half titles in volumes 1-6. Spines a little darkened, extremities rubbed, cracking to joints but all holding, some minor spotting within but on the whole a very good set. First editions of Byron's first collected works complete as published up until 1819 (the seventh volume here completing Childe Harold's Pilgrimage). The first four volumes were printed together with "In Four Volumes" to their title pages in 1815, the fifth volume in 1817 with the title page amended "In Five Volumes", the sixth in 1818 amended "In Five Volumes", and the seventh in 1819 but without like amendment. It is very unusual to have sets in contemporary bindings comprising each instalment of Murray's ever-growing Works of Lord Byron present each in its first printing thus. This set is handsomely presented in a contemporary binding of full tree calf, and has in each volume the contemporary armorial bookplates of the Scottish Halkett family of Pitfirrane Castle. These volumes contain, in order: Childe Harold's Pilgrimage: Cantos 1 and 2; The Giaour, The Bride of Abydos; The Corsair, Lara; Ode to Napoleon Buonaparte, Poems (including "Lines inscribed upon a cup formed from a skull"), Hebrew Melodies (including "She walks in beauty" and "The destruction of Semnacherib"); The Siege of Corinth, Parisina, Poems (including "Stanzas for Music"); The Prisoner of Chillon, Manfred , The Lament of Tasso; and Childe Harold's pilgrimage: Cantos 3 and 4.

The grounds of an opinion on the policy of restricting the importation of foreign corn; intended as an appendix to 'Observations on the Corn Laws.'

London: John Murray and J. Johnson & Co. 1815. 8vo., (2) + 48pp., some minor staining to title-page, otherwise a fine copy in recent blue morocco-backed marbled boards, gilt lettering to spine, ink note to pastedown 'Ex Libris Brent Graton-Maxfield'.> First edition: uncommon. Goldsmiths 21177. Kress B.6535. Einaudi 3672. Mattioli 2214. In the first of two tracts (Observations on the effects of the corn laws,> 1814), Malthus compared the advantages and disadvantages that might be expected to result from continuing the Corn Laws on the footing on which they then stood, and from laying still greater restrictions on importation. His leanings were, however, obviously in favour of higher duties; and in this, his second tract, he strongly recommends the latter. One of his principal arguments is the increase which he alleges a fall in the value of corn would generate in the value of money, and consequently, in the pressure of taxation. This pamphlet provoked a private response from Horner against his conclusions, later published in Malthus's memoirs, and a public one from Ricardo in An essay on the influence of a low price of corn on the profits of stocks .....> published the same year.

A CURSORY VIEW OF SPANISH AMERICA, PARTICULARLY THE NEIGHBOURING VICE-ROYALTIES OF MEXICO AND NEW-GRENADA, CHIEFLY INTENDED TO ELUCIDATE THE POLICY OF AN EARLY CONNECTION BETWEEN THE UNITED STATES AND THOSE COUNTRIES

Georgetown: Richards and Mallory, 1815. Dbd. Stain and chip near foredge of titlepage, barely affecting title. Uniform light tanning. About very good. In a half morocco box. An interesting early manifestation of the principles of the Monroe Doctrine. Robinson advocates quick action in foiling the joint designs of England and Spain on the new territory of Louisiana, citing evidence that the British have been supplying Indians with arms and munitions in Spanish-controlled Florida. He claims that, should Spain unite with England, the last vestiges of her independent colonial power will be forfeited, and that this forfeiture would clear the way for the United States to rid herself of any remaining European authority in the New World. An aggressive argument, born out of the crisis of the invasion of Louisiana by the British at the close of the War of 1812. Robinson would later be involved in various conspiracies in Texas and northern Mexico, including the attempt of Xavier Mina to seize Texas. Not in Servies. SABIN 72200. SHAW & SHOEMAKER 35799.

Struggles through life, exemplified in the various travels and adventures in Europe, Asia, Africa, and America, of John Harriott, Esq.

London: Pr. for the author 12mo (18 cm, 7.1"). 3 vols. I: Frontis., xvxv, [1], 443, [1] pp. II: xii, 428, [2] pp. III: vii, [1], 479, [1] pp. (lacking pp. 69–72); 1 fold. plt., 1 plt.. 1815 Autobiography of => one of the founders of the Thames police, a clever and independent mariner who went adventuring around the world before settling down to become an Essex justice of the peace and eventually Resident Magistrate of the Thames River Police (a.k.a. the Marine Police Force, sometimes called England's first official police force). Here he looks back on his remarkably varied youthful escapades, including travelling in the merchant-service, visiting "the Savages in North America," meeting the King of Denmark, serving in the East India Company's military service, and narrowly escaping such dangers as tigers, poisonous snakes, floods, fires, and scamming fathers-in-law. If the narrator is to be believed, the two issues that caused him the chiefest distress in life were pecuniary difficulties and other people's unchivalrous treatment of women. He also has much to say about law and business in the New World and the Old, slavery in America, forcible incarceration in private madhouses (with excerpts from a first-person account of such), and the nature of farming in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, and Virginia, as well as the state of affairs in Washington, DC, and, of course, the history of the creation of the Thames police. Vol. I opens with a steel-engraved portrait of the author, done by Henry Cook after Hervé; vol. III is illustrated with an => oversized, folding plate of a water-engine intended for millwork, devised by the author, and a plate of another of his inventions: the automated "chamber fire escape", which enables anyone to lower him- or herself from a high window. This is the third edition, following the first of 1807. Contemporary speckled sheep, spines with gilt-stamped leather title-labels; vol. I with joints and extremities refurbished, vols. II and III with spines and edges rubbed, old strips of library tape reinforcing spine heads. Ex–social club library: 19th-century bookplates, call number on endpapers, pressure-stamp on title-pages, vols. II and III with paper shelving labels at top of spines (vol. I showing signs of now-absent label). Vol. I title-page with offsetting from frontispiece; vol. III with pp. 69–72 excised (two leaves of a rather long religious-themed letter from Harriott to his son) and with upper portion of one leaf crumpled, reinforced some time ago. Some light age-toning, intermittent small spots of foxing and ink-staining, pages generally clean. => Utterly absorbing.
