SYSTEM OF MATERIA MEDICA AND PHARMACY... WITH NOTES BY N. CHAPMAN

, 1815. 1815. MURRAY, J[ohn]. A SYSTEM OF MATERIA MEDICA AND PHARMACY. WITH NOTES BY N. CHAPMAN, M.D., Professor of Materia Medica in the University of Pennsylvania. IN TWO VOLUMES. VOL. I[& II]. Philadelphia: Published by Thomas Dobson, at the Stone House, ... William Fry, Printer, 1815. First American edition of Murray's SYSTEM (London, 1810), but the first edition with Chapman's NOTES. Two octavo volumes: [viii],399; iv,384 pp.. Contemporary leather bindings sewn into mid 19th centurey and surprisingly appealing protective leather coverings (something like a dust jacket) with cut-out windows on the spines that reveal the spine labels below. The leather coverings are worn and scuffed but the bindings are sound. Text is mostly clean but for some intermittent light to moderate foxing, occasional ink spotting, and one marginal note (II: p. 289). One leaf (2K2) has a 1" closed tear. Early ink ownership (Robert P. Church) on ffep of each volume. Ex library, with only a few marks: each volume has a small inkstamp on t.p. and page 1, and a small label on recto of rfep.; no external matks. John Murray (1778-1820), a physician and chemist who taught chemistry, physics, pharmacy, and materia medica in London and Edinburgh, prepared this text to accompany his lectures. It was first published at London in 1810, replacing his earlier work ELEMENTS OF MATERIA MEDICA AND PHARMACY (1804). For this first American edition of the work, the noted professor of materia medica at the University of Pennsylvania, and the first president of the American Medical Association, Nathaniel Chapman (1780-1853), adapted it as a textbook for his lectures and added his notes. Chapman states in his preface to Volume I that Murray's text presents overall "a very correct view of the existing state of the science," though he does not always entirely agree with him. Chapman quickly adds that these "differences of opinion" are "trivial" and are explained by him in his notes. (Austin 1353; Heirs to Hippocrates 1333; Shaw & Shoemaker 35340). Rare.

Essay on the Theory of the Earth

Translated from the French of M. Cuvier…by Robert Kerr…with Mineralogical Notes, and an Account of Cuvier's Geological Discoveries, by Professor Jameson. Four engraved plates. xvi, 332 pp., 2 leaves of publisher's ads. 8vo, cont. grey-green polished half-calf & marbled boards, spine gilt, black leather lettering piece on spine. Edinburgh: W. Blackwood, et al., 1815. Second edition, "with [considerable] additions." "In 1812 Cuvier published a mammoth five volume work on vertebrate fossils. In a lengthy preliminary discourse, he discussed the implications of fossils for the history of the earth. The preface was quickly translated into English and published as Cuvier's theory of the earth, which indeed it was. Cuvier had studied and mapped the Paris basin, and he argued that the abrupt transition between formations proved that the earth had undergone successive revolutions. The radical change in fossil populations between formations was further evidence of repeated catastrophes. Catastrophism was not a new doctrine, but Cuvier was one of the first to support it by detailed fossil evidence… "The Essay was first published in 1813. For this [1815] edition, a section of the Paris basin was included, adapted from another Cuvier work, but with an added limestone face as a bit of Scottish geological whimsy."-Ashworth & Bradley, Theories of the Earth 1644-1830 (Linda Hall Library: 1984), 48. A very fine and pretty copy, with half-title, from the library of Sir. Joseph Radcliffe, Bart., with his armorial bookplate. ? Porter, The Making of Geology, p. 209-this book "became the most popular general account of the Earth in Britain in the 1810s.".

A magnificent set, one of only six copies printed on "grand papier d'Annonay," in contemporary Viennese red morocco bound for Archduke Karl-Ludwig, Duke of Teschen (1771-1847), Field Marshal General and victor at the battle of Aspern again Napoleon. He was the adopted son of Duke Albrecht von Sachsen-Teschen, from whom he inherited all the art collections (now in the Albertina Museum). MacCarthy-Reagh (1744-1811), born in Ireland, became a naturalized French citizen in 1776 on account of his staunch Catholic beliefs and installed himself in Toulouse, where he spent the rest of his life (and considerable wealth) forming one of the finest private libraries ever assembled. Only the La Vallière collection of a generation earlier was comparable in importance. In 1769 he purchased Girardot de Préfond's second library en bloc for 50,000 frs. De Ricci described the Mac-Carthy-Reagh library as "extravagantly rich in books printed on vellum" and the Duke of Devonshire was inspired to put in a bid of 20,000 pounds for the collection which in fact brought only some 16,000 pounds when it came up for auction in 1817. The auction catalogue describes, amongst much else, 602 books (in 826 volumes) printed on vellum including a copy of the Gutenberg Bible (lot 61), copies of the 1457 and 1459 Mainz Psalter, and a copy of the Ximenes Polyglot Bible. It abounded in incunabula, illuminated MSS., and early French literature. The 1817 fixed-price catalogue lists the books which did not reach their reserves in the 1815 auction. Provenance: Archduke Karl-Ludwig, with the Sachsen-Teschen press-mark label inside front covers; Arthur Rau, the Paris bookseller; H.P. Kraus, the New York bookseller (booklabel); and Bernard H. Breslauer (booklabel, his sale, Christie's New York, 21 March 2005, lot 88). ? Grolier Club, Printed Catalogues of French Book Auctions…1643-1830, 567. De Ricci, p. 80.

Qualified Horses and Unqualified Riders, or the reverse of Sporting Phrases taken from the work entitled Indispensable Accomplishments. London, S. & J. Fuller, 1815[-1819].

1815. Landscape folio (25 x 34.4 cm). Engr. title page, 7 hand-coloured engraved plates by Alken, plate 5 with J. Whatman 1819 mark. Later red hard-grained half morocco, spine and upper cover lettered in gilt, rebacked preserving spine. First edition, early issue. The first of Alken's works to have a title page, "lacking from a great many copies" (Dixon). Signed Ben Tally Ho, the title good-humouredly explains that the plates are a reply to Robert Frankland's "Indispensable Accomplishments", a set of six Leicestershire hunting prints published in June 1811. Where Frankland blames the horse for any failures, Alken aims to show how a perfectly good horse can be handicapped by an "unqualified" or untrained rider. - Light browning to sky areas and plate margins. Provenance: Alfred N. Beadleston (bookplate). Dixon 4 (two plates watermarked 1819). Mellon/Snelgrove 3. Schwerdt I, 20 (1813 watermark). Siltzer 69 & 74. Tooley, Coloured Plates 44.

184 X 108 mm. RARE EDITION ORIGINALE IMPRIMEE A COMPTE D’AUTEUR DE CET OUVRAGE DESTINE A RENDRE L’ECONOMIE POLITIQUE ACCESSIBLE A TOUS. Carpenter, XXXV; Goldsmiths', 21108; Kress B., 6577; En Français dans le texte, 207. Absent d’Einaudi. Provenance : Bibliothèque du baron H. F. C.         "Verzeichnis all derjenigen mittel und unmittelbaren Theilnehmer an den Verbrechen des Raubmörders Georg Grasel". "Crime Court Drosendorf", 24. X. 1815.

1815. Folio. Title and 10 pp. on 6 ff. List of the accomplices of the legendary bandit Johann Georg Grasl (1790-1818) prepared by the criminal court official Schopf. Noted are, as far as known, the names of 61 persons including their nicknames and a short description, from which we learn that not only half of Grasl's family indulged in the crime, but also Theresia "Resel" Hamberger, "the mistress of the bandit chief Grassl and a very brazen person", as well as her brother Johann: "23 years old, of small stature, short brown hair, eyes same colour, no beard, small face, pointed chin, long nose, pockmarked face, speaks German, a very rakish fellow who has taken part in many of Grassl's crimes". "Dog's Soup", name unknown, a "young hussy with many measles on her face who supports herself through begging", a similarly nameless carriage driver from Weitersfeld is also indicted for having given Grassl lodging; Isak Stern, a "Jew in Bernschlag", "knowingly bought stolen goods for himself", and a tailor from Stalleck "is accused of fraud". - Grassl himself, who began his career with minor infractions and ended it with a hold-up murder, tended towards the bottle in his advanced age, and was finally captured in an innhouse conspiracy; on the 31st of January 1818 he was publicly hanged in Vienna.

The War in America papers concern the War of 1812 and are primarily naval; with the Royal Navy on the Great Lakes and Lake Champlain. Of particular interest are extracts of the proceedings of the court martial of Captain Barclay and others resulting from the Battle of Lake Erie, September 1813. The slavery papers from 1813 to 1814 containing extracts of treaties between Britain and European countries give an overview of the gradual abolishment of the slave trade. Correspondents include the Duke of Wellington, Viscount Castlereagh, Henry Wellesley, and Earl Bathurst. The Genoa, Naples and Italy papers relate to risings against the French in 1814 with much of the correspondence by Lord Bentinek. The material on the Napoleon Wars deals with the period between The Treaty of Paris in 1814 and the Hundred Days campaign of 1815. The last correspondence is between Viscount Castlereagh and Earl of Clancarty, the month before the Battle of Waterloo in June, 1815. An wealth of contemporary material on a critical period in British and European history. .
