"Chronologischer Ausweis uiber die von dem am 19. November 1815 im Wirtshause zu Martersdorf bei Horn gefänglich eingezogenen berüchtigten Räuber Johann Georg Grasel verübten [...] 202 Verbrechen". Wien, 7. XII. 1816.

1815. 14 SS. auf 8 Bll. Folio. Fadengeheftet.

– Goed. V 8, 20. Baumgartner/J. 71x. Fischer, Cotta, 991. [Attributes: First Edition]

184 X 108 mm. RARE EDITION ORIGINALE IMPRIMEE A COMPTE D’AUTEUR DE CET OUVRAGE DESTINE A RENDRE L’ECONOMIE POLITIQUE ACCESSIBLE A TOUS. Carpenter, XXXV; Goldsmiths', 21108; Kress B., 6577; En Français dans le texte, 207. Absent d’Einaudi. Provenance : Bibliothèque du baron H. F. C.         "Verzeichnis all derjenigen mittel und unmittelbaren Theilnehmer an den Verbrechen des Raubmörders Georg Grasel". "Crime Court Drosendorf", 24. X. 1815.

1815. Folio. Title and 10 pp. on 6 ff. List of the accomplices of the legendary bandit Johann Georg Grasl (1790-1818) prepared by the criminal court official Schopf. Noted are, as far as known, the names of 61 persons including their nicknames and a short description, from which we learn that not only half of Grasl's family indulged in the crime, but also Theresia "Resel" Hamberger, "the mistress of the bandit chief Grassl and a very brazen person", as well as her brother Johann: "23 years old, of small stature, short brown hair, eyes same colour, no beard, small face, pointed chin, long nose, pockmarked face, speaks German, a very rakish fellow who has taken part in many of Grassl's crimes". "Dog's Soup", name unknown, a "young hussy with many measles on her face who supports herself through begging", a similarly nameless carriage driver from Weitersfeld is also indicted for having given Grassl lodging; Isak Stern, a "Jew in Bernschlag", "knowingly bought stolen goods for himself", and a tailor from Stalleck "is accused of fraud". - Grassl himself, who began his career with minor infractions and ended it with a hold-up murder, tended towards the bottle in his advanced age, and was finally captured in an innhouse conspiracy; on the 31st of January 1818 he was publicly hanged in Vienna.

Of particular interest are extracts of the proceedings of the court martial of Captain Barclay and others resulting from the Battle of Lake Erie, September 1813. The slavery papers from 1813 to 1814 containing extracts of treaties between Britain and European countries give an overview of the gradual abolishment of the slave trade. Correspondents include the Duke of Wellington, Viscount Castlereagh, Henry Wellesley, and Earl Bathurst. The Genoa, Naples and Italy papers relate to risings against the French in 1814 with much of the correspondence by Lord Bentinek. The material on the Napoleon Wars deals with the period between The Treaty of Paris in 1814 and the Hundred Days campaign of 1815.         Dottrina Christiana. [Genoa, c. 1815-20].

1815. 8vo (233 x 170 mm). Contemp. half calf, spine gilt with with title lettered in gold. With 117 (out of 118) full-page coloured drawings within borders consisting of two lines (206 x 138 mm) illustrating the Christian Doctrine, on strong paper. One leaf with written introduction (one leaf missing), 117 ff. (numbered 1-95, 97-118) with drawings, 3 blank ff. Interesting manuscript by Padre Ottavio Giovanni Battista Assarotti (1753-1829), containing a method to teach and explain the 'Dottrina Christiana' to Genoese deaf-mutes. Assarotti was an Italian philanthropist and founder of the first school for deaf-mute people in Italy. After qualifying for the church, he entered the society of the Pietists, Scuole Pie, who devoted themselves to the training of young men. In 1801 he heard of the Abbé Sicard's education of deaf people in Paris, and resolved to do something similar in Italy. He began with one pupil, and by degrees collected a small number around him. In 1805, Napoleon, hearing of his endeavours, ordered a convent to give him a school-house and funds for supporting twelve scholars, to be taken from the convent revenues. This order was poorly heeded until 1811, when it was renewed, and the following year Assarotti, with a considerable number of pupils, took possession of the new school. He continued here until his death in 1829. The traditional and distinctive Italian manual alphabet is said to have been invented by Assarotti. - It is not certain that Assarotti himself is the author of the manuscript: while it may equally well have been conceived by one of his collaborators, it is based on the method invented and developed by Assarotti, who also designed the plates. The introduction explains how difficult it is to teach abstract concepts, such as religion, to deaf-mute pupils, so he painted these plates, invented by Assarotti: "He (Assarotti) never wrote down his educational philosophy and methods, and so fell into obscurity after his death" (Deaf History Unveiled, 244f.). As far as we know this manuscript is the only surviving witness of his theories. - The style of the watercolours is somewhat primitive and popular, but very rich in detail, including elaborate plates illustrating Faith in general ('Fede'; nos. 1-42); Commandments ('Legge'; nos. 43-51); Prayers ('Preghiera' 1-10; nos. 52-61); 42 Sacraments ('Sacramenti'; nos. 62-95, 97-104); Virtues ('Virtu' 1-14; nos. 105-118). The illustrations include views of paradise, hell, creation, functions of priests, symbols of all kinds of aspects of the Catholic faith, etc. - In very good condition. Dizionario biogr. degli Italiani IV, 433f. S. Monaci, Storia del R. Istituto nazionale dei sordomuti in Geneva (1901), 17-88 and passim. F. Donaver, "Il padre Assarotti", in: La Rass. naz. 23 (1901), 79-87. Deaf History Unveiled, ed. John Vickrey van Cleve (1993), 244f.

Saffo, Cantate Italienne a voix seule de soprano. Partition. - INSCRIBED PRESENTATION COPY TO GIUDITTA PASTA

Used; Like New/Used; Like New. A remarkable association copy inscribed from the important Italian composer, one of the central figures in the development of the "opera semiseria" at the start of the 19th century, to the most celebrated soprano of the age, likely in the year of her first appearance in Paris. Upright folio. Title; 2 - 18 pp.  Engraved throughout. Inscribed at the head of the title page in brown ink "Alla Santa, ed ... Giuditta Pasta - L'Amico suo / L'Autore." Bound with string along the spine, edges and center of score a little creased and worn, some staining to the internal pages, else fine. <br style=""><br><br><br />In Vienna, Paer knew Beethoven and composed an opera "Leonora" (1804) the year before Beethoven's "Fidelio" (1805) with the same story. Paer succeeded Spontini as Director of the Theatre Italien in 1812 and retained the post during one of its finest periods until the mid-1820s. He composed many fine works which were frequently performed through the 19th century and he later became director of chamber music and Maitre de Chapelle to Louis-Philippe.<br style="">In 1816 Giuditta Pasta made her professional opera début in the world première of Scappa's Le tre Eleonore at the Teatro degli Accademici Filodrammatici in Milan and later that year she performed at the Théâtre Italien in Paris as Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni, Giulietta in Niccolò Antonio Zingarelli's Giulietta e Romeo, and in two operas by Paer.  She was celebrated throughout Europe as the public responded to the poignancy of expression and immense range of her voice and dramatic gifts.  She was "the acknowledged 'diva del mondo' during the 1820s, famed not only for an extraordinary if flawed voice, but also for the physicality of her performance modes. Her innovative practices contributed to the development and reconceptualisation of opera's dramatic potential on the early Romantic stage. Making her reputation in roles such as Medea (Mayr) and Semiramide (Rossini), Pasta later inspired the composition of three of the most striking operatic heroines of the period: Amina in La sonnambula (Bellini) and the title-roles of Norma (again Bellini) and Anna Bolena (Donizetti)."         Description of Browsholme Hall,in the West Riding of the County of York; and of the Parish of Waddington, in the same County: Also, a Collection of Letters, from Original Manuscripts, in the Reigns of Charles I. and II. and James II. in the Possession of Thos. Lister Parker, of Browsholme Hall, Esq.

4to, [2], 130pp., etched frontispiece, small ink number to verso of title-page, 19 plates drawn and etched by John Chessell Buckler, plus a folding pedigree, unobtrusive stamp to verso of final plate, recent calf calf, marbled paper boards, spine gilt with morocco lettered label. The first guide to Browsholme Hall and one of the rarest and finest of the genre. The guide was compiled by Thomas Lister Parker and privately printed for distribution to his friends and the sale was later limited to 100 copies only. The next historical guide was written by Colonel Robert Parker in 1957 when Browsholme Hall was opened to the public. Thomas Lister Parker (1779-1858) was born at Browsholme Hall and obtained possession of the family estate as soon as he came of age at the age of twenty-one. "He went on his grand tour in 1800, visiting France, Italy, and Russia, and returned home in 1801 with a collection of paintings, drawings, and prints. In 1805-7 he altered the sixteenth-century Browsholme Hall, using Jeffry Wyatt (later Sir Jeffry Wyatville) as architect to rebuild and extend the west wing: this provided a new drawing-room and dining-room, suitable for the display of his growing picture collection. Landscape gardening and forestry also engaged his interest. In the house he displayed a collection of antiquities, a feature of which was the creation of interiors evoking Browsholme's mainly Jacobethan past."--(Oxford DNB).

- Rather browned and somewhat spotty due to paper; some tiny paper defects; edges slightly frayed.

Portraits of the Winning Horses of the Great St. Leger Stakes. From the year 1815 to the present year inclusive. London, L. Harrison for S. and J. Fuller, 1829.

1815. Large folio (60 x 42 cm). Letterpress title with engraved vignette, list of subscribers, winners of the St. Leger 1776-1814, 14 hand-coloured aquatint plates by T. Sutherland and R. G. Reeve after Herring, each with letterpress description of riders and winners of other races and the St Leger stakes for each year. Bound in recent half burgundy morocco with contemporary drab boards with large printed label on upper cover. "Extremely rare" (Tooley). Second edition of Herring's finest work, the outcome of his fascination with horse racing and the St. Leger in particular. "In the writer's estimation, the first series of the St. Leger winners contains the very best of Herring prints [...] they were engraved by Sutherland, a more competent aquatinter and colourist than his successors who handled these race-horses" (Siltzer). Herring spent the first 18 years of his life in London, where his father, an American, was a fringe-maker in Newgate Street. Having married against his father's wishes, he went to Doncaster, where he arrived during the races in September 1814, and saw the Duke of Hamilton's horse, William, win the St. Leger. The sight inspired him to attempt the art of animal-painting, in which he subsequently excelled. He painted Filho da Puta, the winner of the St. Leger in 1815, and for the following thirty-two years painted each winner in succession. "Herring's series of Portraits [...] were painted annually and quickly reproduced in large showy aquatints, the horses made literally glossy by the application of varnish to the paper" (Diana Donald, Picturing Animals in Britain 1750-1850, New Haven, CT [2007], p. 215). This is the second edition of this series of wonderful racehorse portraits. It was first published as a suite of 10 plates in 1824 by Sheardown and Son of Doncaster; S. and J. Fuller of London purchased these in 1827 and continued to publish, periodically, the St. Leger winner series up to 1845. The earlier plates were all re-captioned with Fuller's imprint. Plates watermarked 1825-28; the first plate in the present work, "Filho da Puta", is on paper watermarked 1827. - Very slight offsetting to text. Extremities rubbed; otherwise a superb example of this rare work. Siltzer 139-146. Mellon Horsemanship, 128.
