Viaggio di La Perouse intorno al Mondo

Dalla Tipgrafia Sonzogno e Comp, Milan 1815 - Four volumes bound in two, small octavo, with a folding world map outlined in colour and 16 hand-coloured plates; a nice set in contemporary quarter calf, flat spines gilt, the marbled sides a little rubbed. Italian edition with coloured plates. Quite uncommon: the first Italian edition of the voyages of La Pérouse, with a lovely series of handcoloured plates based on the original images of Gaspard Duché de Vancy done for the official French edition. Part of their charm lies in the way that they have been simplified to suit the format of the Italian edition. The existence of this Italian edition is testament to La Pérouse's enduring fame throughout Europe, appearing as it did before even Captain Cook's voyages were translated (Navigazioni di Cook, 1816-17). It was almost fifteen more years before Peter Dillon published his discovery of the wreck of the Astrolabe and Boussole on Vanikoro and the map for this edition therefore still shows La Pérouse's track finishing at Botany Bay. The disappearance of the entire La Pérouse expedition overshadows what was in reality a great Pacific voyage. While primarily a voyage of exploration and discovery, the possibilities of the fur trade and of French expansion into the Pacific and Asia were evidently investigated in depth. La Pérouse's habit of forwarding records whenever opportunity offered ensured their survival. The first portion was forwarded by sea from Macao; the second (Macao to Kamchatka) went overland with De Lesseps, and the final despatches from Botany Bay. 'Published as part of a series, Raccolta di Viaggi dopo quelli di Cook, of which, according to a series title, this comprised Volumes I-IV but is complete in itself. Strathern also lists a Livorno 1827 edition and a Naples 1831 edition. There is also a Naples 1833 edition' (Forbes). It was evidently sold by subscription: two extensive lists of subscribers appear at the end of the first and last volumes (respectively 26 and 27 pp., so a serious business). In both of them the name of Lover or Lovera figures, who is identified as being from Milan. "G. Lovera" also appears in gilt on the spines of the two volumes. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        A treatise on dry rot

London, 1815. London, 1815. Color lithographed plates. xviii, (2 pages plates), 185 pp. I know... dry rot is not a particularly enthralling subject. But it was of great concern to the Royal Navy, and Bowden gives the matter thorough treatment here. This is an early book on the subject. More importantly, perhaps, it is also a very early use of color lithography in book publishing. The two plates showing samples of dry rot are rather arresting. From the Scott collection of marine architecture, with their bookplate. Scott 517. Bound in contemporary full diced calf with gilt dentelles and elaborate spine decoration.

Last page numbered 18, but only 16 of 20 pages, if, as is possibly the case, this copy lacks wrappers; though this is not certain despite the page numbering as we have seen this series issued both with and without wrappers, though clearly the earliest issues had wrappers. Woodcut on cover/title, wood-engraved portrait of the King and Queen, and illustrated with 26 woodcuts, throughout illustrating the letters of the alphabet. Small hole in one leaf; spine expertly repaired; else a very good copy. Rare. No copy located in WorldCat or COPAC.

Jeu Instructif des Peuples et Costumes des Quatre Parties du Monde et des Terres Australes

Paris: Chez Basset, 1815.. Paris:: Chez Basset,. 1815.. Very good condition. A scarce French lotto game illustrated with the newly discovered inhabitants of Australia, New Zealand, New Guinea, Java and Tahiti, as well people from other parts of the globe. The peoples and costumes of the world form the motif of this spiral journey around the world, each illustrated with numbered vignettes, beginning with China and ending at France. The instructions to the game are printed at the center.& & The game follows the spiral form of the traditional game played as early as the 1570s, called "jeu de l'oie" or game of the goose, which consists of a track with 63 consecutively numbered spaces arranged in a spiral. Players advanced according to throws of the dice, and scattered throughout were images of a goose, rewarding the player by doubling the distance just moved; other spaces contained penalties. & & This game evolved from the jeu de l'oie tradition; it has penalties and bonuses related to landing on certain numbered spaces, for example: landing on any of the countries of Europe allows the player to move again by the same distance; landing on space 19 (traditionally represented by an inn, but here the hospitable people of Tahiti) means the player waits 2 turns; landing on space 42 (traditionally a maze, but here Japanese warriors repelling foreign navigators with spears) means the player returns to space 30; and landing on space 58 (traditionally "death", but here the people of New Zealand preparing to eat a European tied to a stake) means going all the way back to space 1. The instructions at the center refer to number 58, as New Zealand "ile habitee par les Anthropophages" a reference to cannibals. Australia, space 7, here called "Nouvelle Hollande (Terres Australes), is illustrated with aborigines around a fire (after Baudin). & & The vignette for the final space, number 63, depicts a statue of King Henry IV on a pedestal. This perhaps demonstrates the game maker wanting to steer clear of the recent humiliation of the defeat of Napoleon, which he accomplished by choosing a king who united France and brought prosperity. Henry IV was given the sobriquet "le roi de la poule au pot" having wished for "A chicken in every peasant's pot every Sunday". In the four corners are allegorical representations of the continents.& & Andre Basset (c. 1720 - 1865) was from a well-known French family of publishers and engravers active on the Rue St. Jacques, Paris. Basset produced low cost optical views of European cities and also games, maps & prints.& & Copper engraving on thick laid paper, some short closed tears repaired from the verso (space 25 & center), margins a little dusty, overall very good condition. Printed area 24 x 18". & & Allemagne, Henry-Renè d': "Le noble jeu de l'oie en France, de 1640 à 1950" (The noble board game of the Goose in France 1640-1950)" Ed Grund, Parigi 1950 (Tav. 45). He also completed the 'Grammar of the Chinese Language'; a work of great importance in terms of advancing English understanding of China and "the first work of its kind in English (preface by Morrison).         1815 Italy England AMERICA Chateaubriand FRENCH travel

Londres - Henri Colburn, 1815. Londres - Henri Colburn, 1815 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition. Leather bound with paper covered boards. Two volumes bound together as one andcomplete. A first edition, first printing, printed in French but in London. An English edition was published later in the year by the same publishers. A scarce book. Would benefit from a rebind and very much worthwhile. Scarce. Contains an important early account of travel in America and among its natives. The famous chapter detailing Chateaubriand's night among the savages reveals his romanticism on the subject. Much content also on Mackenzie's journey of discoveryacross the North American continent. Francois-Rene, vicomte de Chateaubriand (September 4, 1768 July 4, 1848) was a French writer, politician and diplomat. He is considered the founder of Romanticism in French literature. Chateaubriands musical prose enriched the French language. Although his accounts of travel were plagiaristic and partly imaginary, they were rich and moving. Condition: The binding is tight and firm and the rear board is attached, but by the cords only. The front board is detached but present. There is some wear to the extremities, including a tear with significant loss to the spine. The boards are also chipped and bumped, and the paper is rubbed. The paper to the rear board is damaged with loss. Internally the book is clean and bright apart from some isolated spots and handling marks. There are also some very isolated water marks. There is an ownership plate to the front pastedown..
