BARKER, Henry Aston.
Palser and Barker London, 1813. Continuous aquatint strip panorama (49 x 431 cm), linen-backed, varnished and wound on mahogany rollers, consisting of eight sheets plus key sheet all conjoined. This 360-degree panorama was issued here on a roller. The sheets making up this example were trimmed along the lower edge before being mounted as one. It therefore lacks words from its title and also the imprint; the first three words of the title, artist, etcher, and the aquatinter appear in the lower margin of each sheet. A magnificent panorama, over 4 metres long, varnished. In 1797 Robert Barker took out a patent which gave him exclusive rights to exhibit 360o paintings mimicking nature. His first exhibition was of a painting of London and for this friends provided him with a title sufficiently striking to gain a permanent place in the English language. 'Panorama', derived from the Greek words meaning 'all' and 'view' had its first use in 1791 in the advertisements for the picture of London. Together with his son Henry Aston Barker, Robert opened a new and fashionable venue in Leicester Square, 'The Panorama', where examples of this new art form were exhibited to an eager public. A form of education and entertainment, the Barkers' panoramas soon became "all the rage" according to the artist John Constable. When their monopoly ended in 1801, the Barkers realised that they had to take steps to ensure their patrons were not enticed away to rival exhibitions. As a result, views from all parts of the globe started to appear at Leicester Square and, in 1801 the first foreign city to be … [Click Below for Full Description]

MURPHY, James.
London Cadell & Davies 1813 - First edition. Large folio (66 x 49 cm), engraved title, 103 fine engraved plates and plans by E. Turrell, J. Roffe and others after Murphy, light foxing to title and first few leaves, contemporary half calf gilt, spine darkened and joints neatly repaired, a very attractive copy. The first book to provide English readers with an accurate idea of the arts and architecture of Moorish Spain. Architect, architectural draughtsman and author. James Cavanah Murphy is said to have been born of obscure parentage in Blackrock, Co. Cork, and to have trained as a bricklayer. A talent for drawing brought him to the attention of Sir James Chatterton, who provided the means for him to go to Dublin. In Dublin he became a pupil at the Dublin Society's drawing schools in about 1775. James Cavanah Murphy spent the last 12 years of his life preparing notes and drawings for a publication on this Moorish architecture. The resulting book, The Arabian Antiquities of Spain, was only partially published at his death in 1814. Thomas Hartwell Horne added text descriptions to Murphy's measured drawings, and the whole was reprinted in 1815. Murphy's careful documentation of the Great Mosque of Cordoba and the Alhambra in Granada are appreciative acknowledgements of the Moors' artistic achievements. MINIATURE. [FORSTER (Benjamin Meggot)]
London: Printed for Darton Harvey and Darton, 1813. FIRST EDITION. 16mo, 77 x 58 mms., pp. [iv], 96, 48 hand-coloured engraved plates, later sheepskin, with old gilt spine laid down, new end-papers. The British Critic for 1813 was very happy with this work: "After labouring through multitudes of terrific volumes in royal and imperial quarto, it is incredible with what pleasure we descend to a pretty little pocket piece two inches square, the exact size [! ed.] of the present volume which we consider as one of the neatest compendiums of botanical science which we remember to have seen. The plates are well executed, the drawings accurately coloured, and the descriptions both scientific and correct, and all within two inches square (my italics)." Well, reviewers can't all be acquainted with arithmetical accuracy or to know what a dangling participle is. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

SHAKESPEAR, John.
London, Printed for the Author, By Cox and Baylis, 1813. 4to. Modern grey-blue cloth with printed label on spine; pp. x, [6], 191, 10 engraved plates; these foxed, as usual, text clean; provenance: title inscribed To Robert Woody Esq. with the author's Compliments. Very rare privately printed first edition, presentation copy of a new Hindi grammar for the British, as Gilchrist's grammar, published in 1796 in Calcutta, had become unobtainable. 'The Indian characters are illustrated with great perspicuity, and the rules of instructions managed with facility and address' judged Tobias Smollet's Critical Review in 1814 on page 645. Indeed, the book proved to be useful and required several re-editions into the middle of the 19th century. When the author, professor of oriental languages for the East India Company retired in 1856 'Shakespear gave £2500 to the trustees of the fund for preserving William Shakespeare's house at Stratford upon Avon, prompted apparently by the idea that he might have been descended from a branch of the dramatist's family' (Oxford DNB).

Kerr Robert
Sherwood, Neely, and Jones, London, 1813. 8vo. pp, xxxii, 504, 73. 2 page list of publications of the Board of Agriculture. Folding, hand-coloured county map and 3 engraved plates. Original publisher's plain paper spine over blue paper covered boards. Printed paper title label. An unopened copy in its original state with full margins. Although the binding is rubbed and bumped the hinges are sound and the structure of the book is in fine order. Thus the presence of three bands of selotape staining to the spine (selotape removed) is unfortunate and was entirely uncalled for. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Paris, Longchamps, F. Buisson / F. Buisson /F. On a pu dire (Ed. Schérer) qu'avec elle Grimm inaugurait la véritable critique moderne (...) et avec raison, que ces lettres représentent une histoire complète de la culture française entre 1753 et 1790. M Cuvier.
Wm Blackwood et al. VG text block in a gently rubbed binding. A very good example of the first edition 1813 of this classic work. The first English translation of the lengthy preface of Cuvier's 1812 five-volume work on vertebrate fossils. "Translated from the French by Robert Kerr with Mineralogical Notes and an Account of Cuvier's Geological Discoveries by Professor Jameson." Printed in Edinburgh for William Blackwood, John Murray & Robert Baldwin. Bound in paper-covered boards, green half-leather with title and date to spine. The two plates present and unmarked. Only mark to the text block is a previous owner's monogram in top corner of title page. Very good condition overall, pages sound with light foxing to the first few. The binding is a cheap one, upon the front of which someone has written in ink the title and date. The book will of course benefit from the full Bayntun-Riviere treatment which it deserves and this is allowed for in the modest price asked for this volume. My ref 011359 3 eb2687 170816.
