Lagrange Joseph Louis
M.me V.e Courcier. In-4° (265x206mm), pp. XI, (1) di errata, 383, legatura coeva m. pelle marmorizzata. Titolo in oro su tassello rosso al dorso. Esemplare assai bello, salvo qualche lieve fioritura. (Avertissement). "In this book, Lagrange intended to show that power series expansions are sufficient to provide differential calculus with a solid foundation. Today mathematicians are partially returning to this conception in treating the formal calculus of series. As early as 1812, however J.M.H. Wronski objected to Lagrange's claims. The subsequent opposition of Cauchy was more effective. Nevertheless, Lagrange's point of view could not be totally neglected. Completed by convergence considerations, it dominated the study of the functions of a complex variable throughout the nineteenth century". (DSB, VII, p. 570) Il Lagrange (Torino, 1736-Parigi, 1813), fra i matematici più insigni del suo tempo, Professore prima alla Scuola d'Artiglieria di Torino, poi, dal 1766, Direttore dell'Accademia d … [Click Below for Full Description]

Blake, William. Blair, Robert.
1813. London: Bensley for Ackermann, 1813 [i.e. 1870]. 4to, (2), liv, 42 pp. With a portrait frontispiece, etched title, and 11 plates all with tissue guards. Blind-stamped black cloth, rebacked with black cloth lettered in gilt,. § Third quarto edition, printed from the same plates as the 1813 edition but actually issued by or for John Camden Hotten in 1870. Of this version Essick wrote: "I've also seen the true 1813 text and plates in a very similar cloth binding with just a few differences in the blind stamping but very much the same style and period. My theory on that is that Camden Hotten, who produced the 1870 issues, not only got the copperplates from Ackermann (with the Spanish inscriptions for de Mora) but also some remainders of the impressions and letterpress and bound these up in a slightly different (just the blind stamping and perhaps the cloth color or weave) fashion. He removed the Spanish on the coppers and had an engraver restore the 1813 English inscriptions, then printed for both the portfolio and the 1870 issue of the text with the engravings... Bentley lists the 1870 issue in Blake Books, but I don't believe he lists the portfolio issue of the plates only. I have a vague recollection, however, that he did note it in one of his later checklists of publications in the Blake Quarterly." Bentley, Blake Books, 435E.

Halford, Sir Henry (Physician to the King and the Prince Regent)
Nichols, Son, and Bentley, Red Lion Passage, Fleet Street, London, 1813. Large format, 24pp (19 numbered pages) book/pamphletwith navy blue paper covers which look to be on the same paper stock as the rest of the book and would appear to be the original wraps. This is one of quite a few books from AWF Fuller's collection, which we acquired from his descendants. As such, as with many in the collection AWF Fuller has inscribed his name and the date, 27 Aug, 1932 in the top corner of the ffep. Also on this page Fuller has written helpful some notes in light pencil about the book and it's origins. It reads: "This scarce pamphlet (the 1st edit.) which is also a large paper copy, was (2 words can't read) from the library of Dr. Howley, Bishop of London & Archbishop of Canterbury, 1828-1848. The Author was a friend of his & doubtless presented him with this copy." Underneath the Author's name Fuller has also written the note in light pencil: "& later President of the College of Physicians." There is some edge wear to the pages, perhaps even rodent nibbles in the bottom back fore edge corner, which has resulted in some having a slightly raggy appearance. Not withstanding that this book is a unique piece and with great provenance, therefore highly collectable. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

1813. Antique print, titled: 'Carte Reduite du Skagerak [ ].' - A chart of the Skagerrak and the northern edge of the Kattegat (with the northern edge of Denmark). This shows the south coast of Norway and the west coast of Sweden and includes Goteborg and Kristiansand. Highly detailed along the coasts, showing islands, fjords and coastal towns. Some depth soundings. Published by the Depot de la Marine. These type of charts are scarse as they were actually used at sea for navigation. Engraving on hand laid paper. Made by 'E. Collin' after 'Depot de la Marine'. Depot des Cartes et Plans de la Marine (1720 - present), often called the Depot de Marine, was a French hydrographic mapping organization founded in 1720. Much like the U.S. Coast Survey, the British Admiralty, and the Spanish Deposito Hydrografico, the Depot was initiated as a storehouse and distribution center of existing nautical and marine charts. Eventually the Depot initiated its on mapping activities in an attempt to improve and expand upon existing material. Some of the well known hydrograhers / cartographers in the development of Depot were Jacques Nicholas Bellin and Rigobert Bonne. Good, given age. Loosely attached to (modern cardstock) carrier, will ship w/o carrier. Right edge browned. Paper loss in the top right margin corner. Wagner, Richard
Famous German opera composer (1813-1883), signed letter ("To the Patrons of the Performance Festival in Bayreuth"), with printed text, asking to patrons for donations to support and save the promised first Bayreuth Festival, which was (finally) going to take place in the summer of 1876. This is a fantastic, historically important document, with the authentic signature of Wagner at the end. Wagner describes the many difficulties of the project, that they can not open in 1875 as planned due to financial problems and that his enemies will be celebrating his many troubles. Problems will be later solved by raising funds giving concerts where he conducted his own music, selling rights from his previous compositions, donations from the sponsors and the big help from Ludwig II of Bavaria who provided a loan for the missing money. This funds were used to finish building his own theater at Bayreuth, create new productions of his Ring (the last 2 operas would be world premiered at the first Festival in 1876) and two summers of rehearsals with the musicians. Document has 4 pages together in one large single piece of paper, each page is 9 x 13 inches, Wagner signed at the end of the text (in German, sold untranslated) and next to the date Bayreuth, August 30th 1873. Lightly creased with folds, and a few light stains, nothing affecting the signature, in very good condition.

Wagner, Richard
German composer (1813-1883), one of the most important composers in opera history. Beautiful handwritten and signed letter, dated in Zurich in 1853. Wagner spent 9 years (1849-1858) in exile in Switzerland, living at the Villa Wesendonck (house of his friends Otto and Mathilde Wesendonck) near Zurich.  While in Zurich, Wagner conducted concerts with his own music. In German, a short translation into English is included (see scan), size is 8.1 x 10.75 inches, some folds, otherwise in excellent condition - one of the better 1-page autographs letters we have seen - a truly beautiful item to frame and enjoy having. ALSO INCLUDED is an unsigned, vintage photo postcard of the composer, from circa 1890s-early 1900s, size is 3.5 x 5.5 inches.
