Researches into the Physical History of Man

London: John and Arthur Arch, 1813. Large octavo, 558 pp. and 2pp. errata, tall untrimmed copy; in a neat modern binding. Rare work by the important scientist James Cowles Prichard (sometimes Pritchard), a precursor to Darwin, with a lengthy chapter 'Of the South-Sea and Indian Islanders.' Following from the work of Buffon and Blumenbach, Prichard was one of the first to attempt such an all-encompassing study of the peoples of the world. As a result, his comparative chapter on the south seas is a highly important and very early contribution, with detailed notice of New Holland, New Zealand, Tahiti and the Sandwich Islands, to name just the most prominent regions. In no small part based on his study of the voyages of Cook - notably the account of the third voyage - Prichard's work also takes into account a roll-call of important explorers, including Dampier, Bougainville, Forrest, and the Forsters. Much of the work relating to Port Jackson is further derived from the two-volume account of David Collins. Although little known today, Prichard's influence on the succeeding generation of scientists, notably Darwin himself, should not be underestimated. An early member of the Aboriginal Protection Society, and remembered for his ground-breaking work on mental illness, he is also recognised as one of the first major scientists to work on ideas of proto-evolution. Although his premises now sound rather quaint - the Dictionary of National Biography notes that 'Prichard's main ethnological aim was to prove the unity of mankind and to vindicate the veracity of the anthropology laid down in Genesis' - this need not discount his significance to the development of evolutionary ideas. Indeed, it was in this first edition that Prichard came closest to pinpointing the common human heritage as having developed in Africa, a conclusion that was omitted in later editions. Despite sometimes disagreeing with the conclusions of Prichard, Darwin is known to have had both the third and fourth editions of this work in his library, and to have written in the latter, while working on the question of dispersal of species in preparing the Origin of Species, 'How like my book all this will be!' Despite underlining the book's significance to Australia, Ferguson noted only the British Museum copy, but it is since known to have been acquired by the State Library of New South Wales. The maps referred to by Ferguson relate to a portfolio issued in conjunction with a much later edition and are not, of course, present here.

Petits Voyages Pittoresques dans l'Asie, l'Afrique, l'Amerique, la Polynesie et les Terres Australes... par M. le Baron de M****

Paris: Chex Saintin, 1813. Two volumes, square duodecimo, with a total of 32 plates including the frontispieces, a little modest foxing, gentle water staining of the preliminaries of the second volume, yet a very good set in recent marbled boards. A fine copy of a rare work: as the title suggests this book showcases the native peoples of exotic and relatively recently discovered lands. It includes one section, with accompanying plate, dedicated to the Australian Aborigines. The work is known for the interest and diversity of its subjects, with sections, to name a few, on Java, Siam, the Iroquois, and the Hottentots. There are also many peoples from the Pacific noticed, including the inhabitants of Kamchatka (I, 20-28); the Moluccas (II, 38-43); Tahiti (II, 57-65); and California (II, 97-99). There is a particularly good section on New Holland (I, 29-37), which takes notice of the discoveries of Captain Cook on the east coast, and the newer colony at Botany Bay. Mention is made of the kangaroo and the platypus, but of course, most of the brief article relates to the Aborigines, with observations on some of their customs, and mention of the Baudin voyage, particularly the role of the artist on the voyage, François Peron. Interestingly, there are lengthy appendices to both volumes, which take the form of "Anecdotes Intéressantes", and which are designed to complement the regional chapters. These appendices include everything from anecdotes regarding expeditions in northern Africa, through to stories of the tribes of Louisiana. Of particular note is the brief account of the massacre of the French explorer and contemporary of Captain Cook, Marion de Fresne, by Maori in the Bay of Islands, New Zealand.

The Voyages of Captain James Cook Round the World . Printed verbatim from the original editions

London: Sherwood, Neely and Jones, 1813. Duodecimo, seven volumes bound in five, with portrait frontispiece of Cook, two folding maps and 29 folding plates; a few plates a little chipped and creased; a very good set in a handsome modern binding of half-calf gilt. Abridged set of the voyages. A really attractive set of Captain Cook's collected voyages in an elegant binding by Morrell. This scarce edition is an abridgement of the first, second and third voyage accounts edited from the official versions authorised by the Admiralty. This was one of two contemporary editions made from surplus sheets and plates from the volumes relating to Cook's voyages which first appeared in Mavor's General collection of voyages (1809-1810). Both versions follow the same organization as Mavor, but each was issued with new title-pages. 'With regard to the correct number of plates found in each volume, this work is a bibliographic riddle… the key numbers for the plates are sometimes correct for this issue and sometimes evidently meant for the earlier series. The result is that the binder has frequently placed plates in the wrong position, or even in the wrong volumes' (Forbes, in the Hawaiian National Bibliography, of the 1809 version). The present copy corresponds exactly with Forbes' collation, a testament to the 'bibliographic riddle' surrounding these books. The set is scarce with Beddie locating copies only in the Mitchell and National Libraries. Forbes adds another in a private collection.

Modern half calf, marbled boards in period style, endpapers renewed. Small repair on title, light toning, occasional foxing but very good. Errata slip pasted to last page of contents. 19th century ownership inscription (&#147;Jno. Graham&#148;) on title; faint pencil inscription on verso. </p><p>First Edition of the First Book on the Materia Medica of India, and a pioneering work in the field of Indian medical history. The work is rare on the market; this is the first copy we have handled in over 40 years in the trade. It is extremely uncommon for books printed in India to survive in such good condition, given the country&#146;s extremely hot and humid climate. </p><p>Whitelaw Ainslie joined the British East India Company as an assistant surgeon in 1788 and spent the next 27 years in India, eventually rising to the position of superintending surgeon of the southern division of the army in Madras. Ainslie was one of the first European scholars to investigate the traditional Hindu medical system known as Ayurveda, and he was &#147;greatly impressed by the range and practical value of India&#146;s materia medica and by the skills of the physicians he encountered in Madras&#148; (Arnold, Colonizing the Body: State Medicine and Epidemic Disease in Nineteenth-Century India, p. 45). The specific purpose of Ainslie&#146;s Materia medica of Hindoostan was to make indigenous remedies available to the British Army, thus reducing its reliance on expensive imported drugs; however, his larger purpose was to bridge the gap between the medical cultures of Europe and Asia, and he was careful to distinguish the Indian medicines already known in Europe from those exclusively used by native physicians. </p><p>Materia medica of Hindoostan draws upon an enormous range of materials on Indian medicine, including numerous works in Sanskrit, Tamil, Persian and Arabic, all of which Ainslie cited in a bibliography at the end of his work. The names of the medicaments listed in the work are given in several languages, using roman, Tamil and Arabic types. Zysk, Medicine in the Veda, p. 264. </p>

Dictionnaire Chinois, Français et Latin , publié d&#39;aprés l&#39;ordre de sa Majesté l&#39;Empereur et Roi Napoléon le Grand

Paris: Imprimerie Impériale, 1813. Large thick folio, woodblock printed Chinese characters within French and Latin letterpress; a fine copy in contemporary deep green half morocco, flat spine with ornate gilt ornament and lettering. The great Chinese language dictionary, published for Napoleon. A magnificent combination of scholarship and typographic design: the first trilingual Chinese-Latin-French dictionary, commissioned at Napoleon&#39;s personal request in 1809 and a most impressive publication, combining woodblock printed Chinese characters alongside French and Latin letterpress translations. A most important contribution to Western scholarship on China, the dictionary is unprecedented in both scope and lavish production, and reflects the emerging curiosity with Chinese language and culture amongst European scholars of the early nineteenth century. Although the title page attributes the dictionary to the French writer and traveller Chrétien de Guignes, it was actually based without acknowledgment on much earlier work: &#39;This first comprehensive Chinese-Latin-French dictionary was composed by the Italian Franciscan Basilio Brollo at Nanjing in the 1690s. The work circulated in manuscript form during the eighteenth century and, when it was finally published by de Guignes in 1813, using the manuscript copy in the Vatican library, Brollo was not acknowledged&#39; (Löwendahl). Basilio Brollo was born in Gemona in 1648 and joined the Franciscan Order at the age of 22. A gifted linguist, Brollo was selected to join the mission led by Bishop Bernardino della Chiesa which sailed for China in 1684. Successful in both translating and preaching the scriptures, Brollo was elected First Vicar Apostolic of China two years later and retained this title until 1700. This was a transitional period for Christian activity in China as Jesuit influence waned while the Franciscan missions became further established. Brollo died in Shaanxi in 1704. Although criticised by fellow scholars for appropriating Brollo&#39;s work, Chrétien de Guignes was a seasoned translator with working experience in China. The son of the orientalist Joseph de Guignes (now chiefly remembered for his fanciful attribution of Chinese characters to Egyptian hieroglyphs), Chrétien was employed as a translator to the Dutch embassy to the Imperial Court in 1794-95, the mission promoting the trading interests of the Dutch East India Company while celebrating the sixtieth anniversary of the reign of the Qianlong Emperor. The Dutch were successful through compliance with the protocol of the Imperial Court, whereas other European emissaries were rebuffed on account of their refusal to do so. Accordingly, de Guignes and his companions enjoyed privileged access to the Court during the last years if the eighteenth century, experiences de Guignes published in Voyages a Pékin, Manille, et l&#39;île de France (Paris, 1808).

Protocols and Procedures for Burials in the Churches of Rio de Janeiro] Exposição do Padre Januario da Cunha Barbosa a El-Rei D. João VI sobre as sepulturas nas Egrejas do Rio de Janeiro.

      - Ca. 1813-1816. Folio (ca. 33x20 cm). 4 pp., with two integral blank leaves, tied with two pink ribbons. Brown ink on laid paper watermarked "1813", legible text in Portuguese. Paper tag ("Avulços") glued to final leaf. Laid into later ruled paper folder (typed title as given above). Paper slightly age toned, mild fold marks, otherwise a near fine document. Unpublished manuscript on church burials in Rio de Janeiro by one of the earliest Brazilian literary critics and an important figure in the independence movement. An apparently unpublished work on the protocols and procedures for burials in churches of Rio de Janeiro, written at a time when such burials were becoming an important public health issue. Cunha Barbosa was appointed prégador for the royal chapel in Rio de Janeiro in 1808. There he became involved in deciding which tombs in the church could be opened when a member of a family or of a religious order died. Apparently Cunha Barbosa had been reprimanded for opening one tomb, and in this work he explains his decision at greater length than he had previously done. He also states the procedures for opening a tomb and notes which church officials had to authorize it. Cunha Barbosa refers to the addressee as "V.A. R." throughout, and once as "Principe." This suggests that the addressee was D. João VI during his tenure as Prince Regent (i.e., before 1816). Two works dealing with burials as a public health matter were published by Brazilians before independence: Vicente Coelho de Seabra Silva e Telles' Memoria sobre os prejuizos causados pelas sepulturas dos cadaveres nos templos, e methodo de os prevenir (Lisbon, 1800), and José Correa Picanço's Ensaio sobre os perigos das sepulturas dentro das cidades, e nos seus contornos (Rio de Janeiro, 1812; See Guerra, Bibliografia medica brasileira 20.) Januario da Cunha Barbosa took orders in 1803 and soon earned such a reputation as a religious orator that in 1808 he was named prégador for the royal chapel in Rio de Janeiro. One of the leading spirits in the Independence movement, he founded and edited (along with Joaquim Gonçalves Ledo) the periodical Reverbero Constitucional Fluminense from September 1821 to October 1822. At the end of 1822 his rival from the liberal party, José Bonifácio, had him deported without trial, but a year later - as Bonifácio himself was being deported - Cunha Barbosa returned to Brazil. There he was simultaneously elected deputy to the new legislature for Minas Geraes and for Rio de Janeiro. He later served as director of the Imprensa Nacional and the Biblioteca Nacional. Cunha Barbosa published numerous sermons, some poetry, and articles on a wide range of subjects in the journals of various learned societies. His anthology Parnaso Brasileiro (Rio de Janeiro, 1829-30) is a major literary contribution. With its publication Cunha Barbosa became one of the earliest Brazilian literary critics and preserved much poetry of the colonial period which would doubtless otherwise have been lost. (See Verissimo, História da literatura brasileira [1969] p. 119.) He also co-founded, with Raymundo José da Cunha Mattos, the Instituto Historico e Geographico Brazileiro in 1838. The Instituto had much wider interests than its name suggests, and came to serve as a forum for all Brazilian writers. Work done under its auspices set the direction for much of the historical, geographical and ethnological research later done in Brazil. (See Verissimo, p. 127). On Cunha Barbosa, see Innocêncio III, 254; VI, 127; VII, 71; X, 117. See also Sacramento Blake III, 294-300. OCLC: No printed version or other manuscript version located. No printed or manuscript version located in Porbase, Copac, or OCLC.

Mimique. L'Art de Connaitre les Hommes sur Leurs Attitudes, Leurs Gestes et Leurs Demarches; D'Apres Lavater; Avec Trente-Deux Planches Coloriees

Paris: Chez Saintin, 1813 Paris: Chez Saintin, 1813. Wraps. Very Good Minus. 12 mo. 5.5 by 4 inches, 14 by 10 cm. [4], 42 pp. 32 hand-colored plates. Scarce, with only three institutional holdings of it located on OCLC. While the work might have been intended as a guide to the "science" of physiogamy, its value to us is in the insights it offers about the unspoken language of expression and gesture and how it might have been intrepreted at the time. Thus we are shown that this particular appearance indicates a person incapable of introspection, this other, the confusion of an incorrigibly heartless, dishonest individual. We might reject the connection between the appearance and the character type, but the belief at the time would certainly have informed actors at the time in how to convey the personality of the characters they were playing, and in everyday life average people had to have consciously sought to mold their behavior to present themselves flatteringly in accordance with the principles set forth in such a work. So this modest entertaining book enriches our understanding of manners and culture of the day beyond that provided in costume anthologies and other works. With the contemporary wraps. Corner creases. Minor soiling and wear.

        Junius

London - Gale, Curtis and Fenner et al, 1813. London - Gale, Curtis and Fenner et al, 1813 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. Junius is a scarce collection of lettersillustrated with twelve portraits by Mr. Edward Bocquet a historical engraver, from original paintings. Junius was the pseudonym of a writer who contributed a series of letters to the Public Advertiser, from 21 January 1769 to 21 January 1772. The signature had been already used, apparently by him, in a letter of 21 November 1768. These and numerous other personal letters were not included in his Letters of Junius collection, published in 1772. The identity of Junius is open to question and debate, and may never be finally resolved unless documents are found which establish his identity. On the other hand scholars now generally support the identification with Sir Philip Francis. Condition: In a long grain morocco binding. Externally, sound but with some wear to extremities and slight rubbing and marks to boards. Front hinge strained. Internally, generally firmly bound but with page 13 loosening. Bright but with occasional scattered foxing and offsetting from engravings to surrounding pages. Overall: VERYGOOD.

Hobbinol, Field Sports, and the Bowling Green

sp;- London -R. Ackermann, 1813. sp;- London -R. Ackermann, 1813 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A collection of poetry from William Somervile. Aimed as an accompaniment to the 1796 edition of &#39;The Chace&#39;, Somevile&#39;s most famous work: &#39;including the lesser Poems of the same popular writer on Field and Rural Sports, so as to produce, when united, a complete Poetical Work on subjects which form so large a portion of the manly amusements of the English Gentleman&#39;. Illustrated with woodcut designs in the text throughout, by Nesbit and Thurston. William Somervile [Somerville] (16751742), poet. Somervile had two major interests, writing poetry and hunting. His first major work written by 1708 was The Wicker Chair, a lively recollection by the character of a Vale of Evesham farmer of his exploits at Robert Dover&#39;s Cotswold Games. Like the drafts of many of his poems, the text circulated in manuscript before being published, with revisions, as Hobbinol, or, The Rural Games, a burlesque dedicated to Hogarth, in 1740. Somervile&#39;s major poem was The Chace, published in 1735 and dedicated to Frederick, prince of Wales. In four books of blank verse he conveyed the excitement and dangers of the chase as well as its place in history. Somervile&#39;s hunting exploits were well known in the locality. He disapproved of coursing, but he took an active part in hunting, his favourite horse Old Ball being used three days a week during the season. His kennels included twelve couples of beagles, six couples of fox-hounds, and five couples of otter-hounds. DNBCondition: In a half calf binding with marbled boards. Externally rubbed, the front joint cracked. Internally, firmly bound. Bright and generally clean with a few scattered spots, and heavier spotting to the title. Overall: GOOD..

Kupfer leicht stockfleckig u. geknittert, 1 kol. mit Quetschfalte, Rücken an Kopf u. Fuß wenig ergänzt, Ebd. etw. berieben u. bestoßen.# First edition, one of his earliest works, extremely rare.- Beer opened the first known eye hospital, in 1786, in Vienna.
