MANN, David Dickinson
London: 'Sold by John Booth', 1811. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. London, 'Sold by John Booth', 1811. Large quarto, vi, 99, [1] (publisher's advertisement) pages plus a double-page hand-coloured engraved map as frontispiece ('A New Plan of the Settlements in New South Wales, taken by order of Government'). Original papered boards, with the original printed paper title-label on the spine; all edges uncut; minor restoration to the spine and front joint, and minor wear to the corner tips; covers a little rubbed and marked, with a few small waterstains (confined mainly to the front cover near the head and foot of the spine); endpapers, title leaf and edges moderately foxed, with minimal light scattered foxing elsewhere; three tiny tears to the blank leading margins of the frontispiece expertly sealed; a few trifling signs of use and age; a very good copy. This work was originally published with two large engraved views of Sydney (in four sheets, forming an impressive panorama), as detailed in the lengthy title. The artwork was by the convict-artist John Eyre; original issues of these plates are extremely rare. This copy comes with a set of the chromolithographic facsimile plates published by William Dymock in 1884, housed in a very large and handsome antique-style book-form case (quarter calf, spine gilt in compartments, with contrasting leather title-label), and complete with the companion booklet of explanatory text, 'A Letterpress Description of the Views of Sydney in 1810' (Sydney, William Dymock, 1884; quarto, 6 pages including the wrappers, now heavily tanned and … [Click Below for Full Description]

Bible
1811. Condition: Very Good. The Holy Bible Translated from the Latin Vulgate: Diligently Compared with the Hebrew. Greek, and other Editions in Divers Languages. The Old Testament, First Published by the English College at Douay, A.D. 1609. And the New Testament First Published by the English College at Rheims, 1582. With Useful Notes, Critical, Historical, Controversial, and Explanatory, Selected from the Most Eminent Commentators, and the Most Able and Judicious Critics. By the Rev. Geo. Leo Haydock. Manchester, T. Haydock, 1811. This is the first appearance of the renowned Haydock Bible, which would dominate English Catholic Bible production throughout the nineteenth century in England, Ireland, and America, and enjoy a rebirth in the present day. Appearing just as the centuries-old Penal Period against Catholics was drawing to a close, its extended commentary provided Catholics with scriptural basis to support their faith against Protestant diehards who wished to keep the Penal Laws in place. Publication was by Father Haydock's brother, Thomas, over the years 1811 to 1814, with subscribers receiving a few leaves at a time. In two impressive giant folio (17" x 11") volumes finely bound in leather, with spine in six ornate gilt panels offset by raised bands and marbled boards. This edition contains the earliest title pages. The first volume title is dated 1811 and has only the name of Father Haydock as compiler of the annotations. (Later editions added the phrase "and other eminent divines" after Father Haydock's name as he needed assistance to complete the work.) The New … [Click Below for Full Description]

Tadini, Placido Maria.
Parmae: Typis Bodonianis, 1811. Folio (42 cm, 16.5"). [8 (2 blank)] pp. Sole Bodoni and sole book edition: Written in Horatian-inspired Alcaic stanzas, this Napoleonic birthday tribute in honor of the "King of Rome" was the third Latin ode from Cardinal Tadini to be printed by Bodoni. Never reprinted in book form and apparently otherwise printed only once in a contemporary periodical, the poem is now scarce, most especially in this large, imposing Bodoni production: A search of NUC, WorldCat, COPAC, KVK, and SBN finds only six libraries worldwide reporting ownership => none in the U.S., one in Britain, one in Switzerland, and four in Italy.    Provenance: Inscribed on the title-page “Donné par L'Auteur.” Front pastedown and free endpaper with bookplates of Francis Henry Egerton, 8th Earl of Bridgewater and Prince of the Holy Roman Empire; John Egerton-Cust, 2nd Earl Brownlow, Ashridge, 1876; Crosby Gaige (Broadway producer, book collector, and co-founder of the Watch Hill Press); abd Grolier Club member Leroy Arthur Sugarman. Additionally, the large, neat, elegant rubber-stamp of the Ashridge Library at foot of title-page.         Brooks 1100; De Lama, II, 196. Not in Brunet, not in Graesse. Original Bodoni orange paper–covered boards, front cover with gilt-stamped title and author and paper now more brown than orange — rubbed at extremities and spine with loss of paper in top 7". Bookplates, ownership markings, and inscription as above. Pages clean. => An uncommon item, with extended, interesting provenance.

La Rochefoucauld, François, duc de.
De L'Imprimerie Bodoni, 1811. Bodoni edition of a classic of the genre: Rochefoucauld's dry, pragmatic observations on human nature -- at the time of this printing, a mandatory entry in any well-bred philosopher's library. Bodoni produced two separate editions in this same year, the present example being => one of only 255 copies printed in the quarto format, which Brooks considers equally attractive as that in folio. Provenance: Front pastedown with small oval blue-paper label lmbossed in gold with a monogram of "PB," and with bookplates of Robert Wayne Stilwell and Brian Stilwell. Searches of NUC and WorldCat locate only four U.S. libraries (Wesleyan, Boston University, Johns Hopkins, The Bridwell) reporting ownership of this quarto format edition.

The Authoress of the 'Observant Pedestrian'
London: Printed for the Author by T. Bayley, 1811. First edition. Contemporary calf with morocco spine label. Gentle rubbing to extremities. Top of front hinge cracked but holding. Offsetting to preliminaries and light scattered foxing throughout. Contemporary ownership inscription to the front endpaper: "The gift of Miss Marriott to Eliza La Coste." The Marriotts of Old Broad Street are, in fact, among the subscribers listed in the book; while Mr. Marriott purchased one copy, his wife purchased four, the eldest Miss Marriott (presumably the gift-giver) purchased two, and the younger Miss E. Marriott purchased one. Measuring 95 x 152mm and collating xii, 149, [1, blank]: complete. A rarity calling out for research, the present work had 241 subscribers (more than half being women) and yet only one institutionally held copy at the British Library is reported on OCLC. "Picture if you will, the woman poet of the Romantic era, toiling away in obscurity, fearful of putting her name before the public -- of being seen and recognized as a writer" (Feldman). This is a popularly held conception of women writers, but as recent research makes clear, the majority of women authors either did publish under their own names, or their identities have been uncovered in works like Jackson's Romantic Poetry by Women. "The identity of very few Romantic-era women authors of poetry volumes remain unknown today. Of the more than two thousand volumes of published poetry listed by J. R. de J. Jackson in his splendid bibliography, only five appear under the heading 'Anonymous' and only sixty one under … [Click Below for Full Description]

SUGITA, Genpaku, attributed to
[Japan]: before 1811.Genpaku Sugita (1733-1817), one of the most renowned of all Japanese medical doctors, was a physician and scholar in Tokyo. In 1771, he was one of two lead physicians to witness the famous dissection of an executed female criminal. He was accompanied by several fellow doctors, all of whom had studied Dutch medicine. During the dissection, Sugita and his colleagues noticed the extreme accuracy of the images in the Dutch medical book Tabulae Anatomicae (1731) of Kulmus. Sugita decided to learn Dutch and translate the book into Japanese and illustrate it. He worked with his fellow physicians and in 1774 published the famous Kaitai Shinsho [The New Book of Dissection]. "This classic work was a milestone in the history of medicine, and particularly of anatomy, in Japan, marking as it did the transition from the traditional Chinese medical teachings to the period when medical knowledge (anatomy) was to be based strictly upon human dissection and when anatomical inferences were to be confirmed 'in the flesh,' so to speak. Kaitai shinsho was the first Japanese translation of a Western anatomical work...[it] launched a long series of anatomical works."-Mestler, A Galaxy of Old Japanese Medical Books, I, p. 311.The first sheet of paper, measuring 350 x 245 mm., is a fine brush and ink portrait of Shennong (or Shen Nung), the deity who first instructed the Chinese in the use of herbal drugs and many other aspects of medicine. The image shows Shennong tasting a plant, one of the classic depictions of this god. It would be pleasant to think this finely draw … [Click Below for Full Description]
