Michaud, 1811-48. Vorzugsexemplar auf grossem Vélin-Papier und mit den radierten Portrait-Tafeln. Individuals covered represent all times and places, but there is a distinct emphasis on French notables. In contrast to Hoefer's Nouvelle Biographie Generale (Paris,1852-68), the Michaud offers longer and more scholarly entries. Vol. 52 with the letter Z and the thirty-three supplementary vols. published up to 1862. are not present here. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Jonathan Russell
1811. Britain continues to insist as a condition of peace that the U.S. make unacceptable concessions to the Indians, such as agreeing to place limitations on land Americans could purchase from them “She will not therefore sign a treaty of peace unless the Indians ‘be included in it, and restored to all the rights, privileges and territories’ which they enjoyed in the year 1811, previous to their commencement of the war, by virtue of the Treaty of Greenville and the treaties subsequently concluded between them & the United States. From this point the British plenipotentiaries cannot depart…They shall make a final proposition on the subject of Canadian boundaries, so moderate & just that they are sure it cannot be rejected.” The U.S. was unprepared for the War of 1812, and the fortunes of war proved vacillating. There were successes, such as William Henry Harrison’s victory in the Battle of the Thames, in which Tecumseh was killed, and Oliver H. Perry’s victory on Lake Erie. But there were also failures, such as a winter expedition against Montreal; also, Fort Niagara was lost, Black Rock and Buffalo were burned, and great quantities of provisions and stores destroyed. The American hope of conquering Canada began to look like a dream, and the threat remained that the British and their Indian allies might yet gain a hold over territory in the American west in order to create an Indian buffer state between the U.S. and the Mississippi River. The British blockade of the U.S. eastern seaboard was constantly growing more rigid; not a single American man-of-war wa … [Click Below for Full Description]

DIBDIN, Thomas Frognall
1811. Three facsimile illus. in the text. iv, 34 pp. 8vo, cont. red half-morocco & brown drab boards, sides ruled in blind, spine lettered in gilt, a.e.g. London: Printed by W. Bulmer, 1811. First edition, limited to 36 copies only (so printed on the half-title), and a presentation copy, inscribed on the free front endpaper "With the Author's respectful Compts." This is the very rare specimen of what was to ultimately become the great catalogue of the Spencer Collection, published as the Bibliotheca Spenceriana (1814-15) in four volumes with three volumes of supplements appearing in 1822-23. In the rather charming "Address" which serves as the introduction, Dibdin asks for corrections to be pointed out to him "over a home-cook'd beaf-steak, lightly sprinkled with snow-white horse-radish, and flanked with the best lettuce my garden can bestow." A fine and lovely copy. Armorial bookplate, apparently of the Eliot family (their motto: "Credunt quod vident"), and the leather bookplate of Howard Lehman Goodhart, one of Dr. Rosenbach's good clients and father of Phyllis Goodhart Gordan. ❧ Windle & Pippin A17-"It may not be exaggerating to add that this was the most important prospectus of the many 'fliers' that Dibdin put abroad in his long career." Leeds: Printed by Davies and Booth, 1811. Good. First Leeds edition. Preface by Reverend Walter Shirley. 12mo. 32pp. Self-wrappers. Removed from a bound volume. First leaf soiled and smudged, chips on the edges of two leaves affecting no text, small tears, a good only copy. Originally published at Bath in 1772 and at subsequent other locations and editions, this was the first slave narrative published in the English langauge. Gronniosaw (also known as James Albert) was probably from Bornu (now in northeastern Nigeria). He was captured and sold to a minister in New York. After the minister died he enlisted as a cook with a privateer, and later as a soldier in the British army, until he finally settled in England. He died in 1775. Uncommon edition of this slave narrative.

Le Prieur, Paris 1811 - 324, 310 pp. 12mo. Beautifully designed and executed books are bound in tree calf with gilt spine embellishments, black leather title blocks on spine. Corners lightly bumped, with more corner wear to Vol. 2. Spine ends mildly worn, with more attrition to heads than heels. Some joint tenderness on V. 2, but binding is perfectly tight. Gilt dentelles on cover edges do not carry to insides. Endpapers are marbled in navy, green, and white. Each book has an armorial bookplate on front pastedown, no names given. Vol. 1 uniformly foxed, with some let-up in the center of the book. V. 2 foxed only on prelims. Both volumes have the original dark green ribbon marker intact and unfaded. Copiously illustrated with exquisite steel engravings. A rare set in French language. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

JOHNSTONE, [George]
London: J. Booker, 1811. 8vo., (2) + 111 + (1)pp., wanting the half-title, recently well bound in linen-backed marbled boards lettered. A very good copy. First edition. One of the most useful of the numerous published contributions to the debate following the 1810 Bullion Report. Johnstone even outdoes the bullionists. He has no concerns about a return to cash payments. 'Though the amount now in circulation be not less than £12,000,000, it would be absurd to suppose that an immediate demand will be made to the same extent. Many notes would still circulate when it was known that they could be at any time cashed.' An Appendix includes tables of imports, &c., and an account of the number of re-issuable promissory notes stamped in England during the period 1805-1810. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
