SMITH, Adam.
Rio de Janeiro: Na Impressão Regia, 1811-12. Rio de Janeiro: Na Impressão Regia,, 1811-12. Adam Smith in Portuguese translation 3 volumes bound in 1, octavo (205 x 122 mm). Contemporary sprinkled half roan and marbled paper boards, flat spine divided into compartments by gilt roll toll, red leather label. Shelf label to front pastedown and top spine compartment. Joints and corners slightly rubbed; occasional light spotting; a very good copy. First edition in Portuguese translation, a selection of passages from books I-IV of Smith's Wealth of Nations, translated from the third English edition of 1784 by Bento da Silva Lisboa. This is a partial translation, with the omission of Book V and half of Books I and IV. The translator's preface makes clear that Wealth of Nations was translated and studied as a doctrinal blueprint, to promote the liberalisation of economic relations between Portugal and her most important colony, fostering in this way the independent development of the Brazilian economy." (Illustrated Book). Böhmen, Jacob
Ephrata in Pennsylvanien: Gedruckt bey J. Ruth, 1811. 12mo. 165 x 105 mm., [6 12/2 x 4 inches]. 395 [i.e. 400] pp. Illustrated with engraved frontispiece portrait, engraved frontispiece image of Christ revealing divine truth, 5 engraved plates, and one woodcut image of the serpent printed in the text; the portrait and the frontispiece are added and are not usually found with this edition. The book is bound in contemporary calf, red leather label which reads "Der weg zu Christo"; some light rubbing to binding; paper stock is brown with age, fore edges a bit fragile in places; a very good copy. First American edition, originally printed in Goerlitz, Germany in 1624. This American edition of Boehme's mystical text was printed at the Ephrata Cloister by Jacob Ruth and is one of only two titles produced by this printer at the Cloister press. K.J.R. Arndt gives Ruth's dates as 1794-1878 but provides no other information about the biography of the printer and his relationship to Ephrata. This question is of interest because the engraved images in this book are all unsigned and are apparently re-engravings of plates form an earlier edition published anonymously in Leiden in 1730, which contains five plates. If Ruth re-engraved these plates it demonstrates a very sophisticated skill with the burin and familiarity with the creation of fine lines, tonality, and readily recognizable symbols. The engravings are not only fine work but early examples of the art form produced in the Pennsylvania German community of the period. Shaw & Shoemaker 22416. Philadelphia: Printed by William Duane, 1811. viii, 292pp. 1 vols. 8vo. Contemporary calf, rebacked with original spine laid down. Copley Library bookplate. Contemporary ownership inscription on title page. Light tanning and foxing. Very good. In an elaborate green half morocco slipcase with tan onlay. viii, 292pp. 1 vols. 8vo. This is the first edition, and an edition in French did not appear until 1817. In his preface the author states that he wrote this work, in which he extols the superiority of the republican constitution of America over that of England, during his residence in America and, more important, that he wrote it for Americans, albeit in his native language for lack of sufficient skill in English. It also contains considerable discussion of economic policy. Thomas Jefferson revised the translation of the work from the French, and forwarded it on to the printer, William Duane. - Kleiner Randeinriss. - Am Briefkopf blasser Bleistifteintrag des Empfängers.

An interesting analysis of the economic conditions in Tunisia at the turn of the century. The author also discusses the trade and commerce in Tunisia in the early nineteenth century, and so is an interesting look at the attitudes of the English towards trade during the British Empire. LUZAC, Jean. 1746-1807
Leiden: D. II Haak & Co, 1811. Contemporary red speckled boards (damaged), flat spine, manuscript label, uncut. FRIEND OF AMERICAN INDEPENDENCE and the most influential newspaper editor in Europe, Luzac built a library to suit his interests: universal. The lots are organized by size (744 folios, 1433 quartos, 2674 octavos...) and then subject with pistols, telescopes and atlases at the end.  THIS WAS A LIVING LIBRARY. Luzac (1746-1807) read and wrote in his books. In his Greek and Latin classics, for instance, he added variant readings culled from manuscripts (cited) or esteemed editions (Aldine, Estienne, etc.). He also valued the annotations of earlier and contemporary scholars, patriots, historians and scientists. The presence of his notes and those of others receive italics in the catalog entries. I have located one example in the U.S. A good copy (base of title cropped and renewed).
