Docketed in left margin of first page, "Wm. Duane, Phila, 4 March 1811."William Duane (1780-1865), Philadelphia newspaperman, was the prominent editor of 'The Aurora', the most influential of the Jeffersonian periodicals. Written on the eve of the War of 1812, Duane's letter analyzes the chaos his sources had described within James Madison's White House. He begins by expressing his sorrow for an unexplained loss that his recipient has endured. Duane then discusses his relief that the 1791 Charter of the Bank of the United States has expired; Duane had, according to this letter, experienced some difficulties with the Bank regarding his own finances. Ironically, Duane would serve briefly as Andrew Jackson's Treasury Secretary in 1833. Jackson fired him when Duane refused to obey Jackson's order to remove the federal deposits from the second Bank of the United States.Albert Gallatin, discussed in this letter, was the longest-serving Secretary of the Treasury: President Jefferson appointed him, and he served an uninterrupted tenure through both administrations of James Madison. The Smiths to whom the letter refers were Secretary of State Robert Smith and his brother Senator Samuel Smith.

Adam Smith
London: J. Maynard and F. Zinke, 1811. Fifth edition. The book offers one of the world's first collected descriptions of what builds nations' wealth and is today a fundamental work in classical economics. Through reflection over the economics at the beginning of the Industrial Revolution the book touches upon broad topics as Division of labour, productivity and free markets. Originally published in 1776, during the Scottish Enlightenment and the Scottish Agricultural Revolution, it influenced a number of authors and economists, as well as governments and organisations. For example, Alexander Hamilton was influenced in part by The Wealth of Nations to write his Report on Manufactures, in which he argued against many of Smith's policies. Interestingly, Hamilton based much of this report on the ideas of Jean-Baptiste Colbert, and it was, in part, Colbert's ideas that Smith responded to with The Wealth of Nations. Complete in three volumes. CONDITION Rebound in tree calf bindings with handwritten calf spine labels. Externally, boards are sound, but with rubbing to extremities and spines. Two spine labels are slightly lifting. All hinges are very slightly strained. Internally, firmly bound, bright and generally clean, aside from light spotting to endpapers. Overall Condition: Very Good.

Australia; New South Wales] Bligh, William; George Johnston; Mr. Bartrum
Printed for Sherwood, Neely, and Jones, London. The very scarce account of the second mutiny against William Bligh, the most important historical event in the early history of Australia, after the arrival of the First Fleet. Bligh was the fourth governor of New South Wales, offered the position by Sir Joseph Banks based on his reputation as a strict disciplinarian. The mutiny, named the Rum Rebellion, took place when then Governor William Bligh of New South Wales was deposed by NSW Corps officers led by Major George Johnston, working closely with wealthy landowner John Macarthur, on January 26, 1808, the 20th anniversary of the founding of the colony, the first European settlement in Australia. Wantrup calls the book "the long and enthralling record" of Johnston's trial. "The trial provides a detailed account of the mutiny and the events which preceded and followed it. Long and detailed evidence from Bligh, Johnston, Macarthur, Blaxland, Grimes and others involved on both sides is given in full. The faithful and complete transcript of evidence and cross-examination succeeds in conveying the drama and tension of the courtroom, making this an eminently readable book. Despite its rarity this volume is of such importance that no collection devoted to the early years of settlement can be considered complete without it" (Wantrup). Bligh was well aware of the danger of rumors after the trial of the Bounty mutineers and so he engaged a court reporter (Mr. Bartrum) to attend the trial and take a shorthand transcription of the entire case. This record provided the full text of the tr … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Australia; New South Wales] Bligh, William; George Johnston; Mr. Bartrum
London: Printed for Sherwood, Neely, and Jones, 1811. First edition. Hardcover. Fine. Bartrum) to attend the trial and take a shorthand … [Click Below for Full Description]

BENTHAM, Jeremy.
London: Vogel and Schulze, and B. Dulau and Co., 1811. 2 volumes, octavo (211 x 125 mm). Contemporary half calf and marbled boards, spines decorated and lettered gilt. Library shelf mark in blue ink to front free endpapers. Spines lightly faded, light wear to spine ends and corners. A very good copy First edition of Bentham's French work on crime and punishment, edited, arranged and translated from his unpublished manuscripts by his Swiss collaborator Étienne Dumont. "Samuel Bentham, Jeremy's brother, had long been urging Bentham to translate, or get translated into French, his writings on legislation, in order that his name and views might be better known on the Continent; but Bentham could not afford to employ a good translator and was reluctant to complete the task himself. Dumont's arrival on the scene, therefore, and his willingness to become a disciple of Bentham were heaven-sent. Bentham has humorously told us 'that the plan was that Dumont should take my half-finished manuscripts as he found them, half English, half English-French and make what he could of them in Genevan-French without giving me any further trouble about the matter. Instead of that, the lazy rogue comes to me with everything that he writes, and teazes me to fill up every gap he has observed.' [x. 313.] Bowring says that Dumont scarcely ever failed to make Bentham attractive by the graces of his own style and by an infusion of commonplaces, of everyday knowledge and of familiar illustrations. Dumont himself wrote to Bentham: 'You are too metaphysical, you write for too small a class. I must be more … [Click Below for Full Description]

Three volumes in four, 4to (27.5 x 21 cm.), pp.xvi, 606, [6, notes], large hand-coloured folding map; xvi, 716; xv, 483; (485)-998. Cornell (1804-1875), pastor of the Manhattan Reformed Dutch Church 1836-1856, dated 25 October 1848, New York; recent bookplate of Robert & Maria Travis to first volume. A remarkably comprehensive chronicle of the history of Islam from the death of Muhammad to the accession of Emperor Akbar, drawing on Price's own translations from Persian sources, particularly Mirkhand, Khandamir, and Abu'l-Fazl. This was the first such chronicle published in English, and contemporary reviewers noted Price's methodical scholarship and his history's ambitious span. As a clear narrative history, with Hijri and Gregorian dates conveniently printed in the margins, it had no contemporary equal and remained a foundational text for English scholars of Islam during the 19th century. David Price (1762-1835) enlisted in the East India Company at the age of nineteen, and went to India, where he studied Persian. He served against Tipu Sultan in the Mysore War, acted as translator to General James Stuart, and lost a leg at the siege of Dharwar. His final post was Judge Advocate of the Bombay Army. WAR OF 1812
Fiery election broadside fanning the flames of Federalist opposition to Democratic-Republican foreign policy during the Jefferson and Madison administrations. In tone if not in substance, this jeremiad against Southern planters is not wholly different from the complaints of Southern fire-eaters against Lincoln and the "black Republicans" 50 years later. It shows the intensity of New England sectionalism a year before "Mr. Madison's War." "The Embargo cost you millions and millions of dollars. It sunk all the property in New England twenty per cent. It ruined and crippled thousands forever. It drove your sailors into foreign employ … You have been robbed of this treasure by Thomas Jefferson…"[WAR OF 1812].Broadside. Boston, April, 1811. Untrimmed with wide margins. At bottom, prints resolutions of a public meeting at Faneuil Hall on March 31, 1811, which threatened resistance against Congress's May, 1810 legislation. An original 579 page manuscript from the early 1800's. Written in both German and Latin. The manuscript is an outline of church history, the first half in German, the latter in Latin. The contents are in part, at least, a condensations of a Church History by Johann Matthias Schrockh, published in the late 1700's and the early 1800's. This history, which is in the Parker Collection of the Boston Public Library, comprises 35 volumes. The manuscript begins with the superscription: "Introduction into Church History according to Schrockh." It is possible, however, that the writer followed Schrockh only for the introductory part and later used other sources; he mentions many source books both in the margins and in the text throughout. He begins with an introduction into general history of religion, then takes up primitive Christianity and continues the Church history, including dogma, administration, the Church Father, persecutions, heresies, etc. to the time of Constantine, then in a section from Constantine to Charlemagne, and again from Charlemagne to Luther. Pages 272-288 seem to have been written in a different hand. From p. 294 on, the manuscript is in Latin. This part includes a history of the Popes, and histories of the Jesuits, of missions, etc., and finally of the Reformation period and after from 1517-1811 - This latter date designated as "our time." As 1811 is the latest date mentioned, the writer presumably worked in the first half of the nineteenth century, probably in the second decade. He seems to have been a learned man. Quotations or titles occur in Greek and He … [Click Below for Full Description]

Editor Thomas Rees was 'mortified' at the American edition, which "work has been repinted in very nearly as incorrect a state as it appeared in the present Editor's copy." Pike led the first exploratory expedition into the American southwest by an American, using government funds. The peak outside Colorado Springs bears his name among many other landmarks named by the expedition. Jenkins states "Spanish authorities learned of his presence and sent a force to arrest him and his men. They were taken to Santa Fe and then sent on to Chihuahua. Pike's maps and papers were confiscated. Apparently he was able to convince the Spaniards that he had entered New Spain by accident, as he was escorted by armed guard through Texas via San Antonio where he was released. He arrived at Natchioches in June, 1807, having thus had the opportunity to examine New Mexico and Texas in some detail, at the expense of the Spanish government." Adam Smith
Rebound in tree calf bindings with handwritten calf spine labels. Externally, boards are sound, but with rubbing to extremities and spines. Two spine labels are slightly lifting. All hinges are very slightly strained. Internally, firmly bound, bright and generally clean, aside from light spotting to endpapers. Overall Condition: Very Good.
