AUCTION CATALOGUE: RAYMOND, Jean Arnaud)
1 p.l., vi, 40 pp. 8vo, antique marbled paper wrappers. Paris: Bréart & Lebrun, ["1811" supplied in manuscript]. The very rare auction catalogue, fully priced and oftentimes with buyers' names in a contemporary hand, containing a rich library on architecture and engineering. Raymond (1742-1811), chief architect of the Louvre and one of the original architects of the Arc de Triomphe selected by Napoleon, won the Grand Prix of the French Académie d'Architecture in 1766 and completed numerous projects throughout France. He began as a pupil of Blondel and Soufflot, and spent eight years in Italy, where he became an admirer of Palladio, of whose works he wished to make an authoritative anthology. Among his commissions were a number of residences for Napoleon as well as the hôtel and salesroom of Elizabeth Louise Vigée Le Brun. At the Louvre, one finds his designs in the halls of Greco-Roman antiquities. The present catalogue includes a biographical sketch and then describes 29 paintings, 211 drawings by Polidoro da Caravaggio, Claude, Lebrun, Panini, Poussin, Rembrandt, Raphael, etc., and 36 lots of Raymond's own work (nos. 133-68). Lots 280-414 describe an important collection of books on archaeology, architecture, art, and engineering. The final section features curiosities such as a barometer, rings, and a compass. Many of the artworks were purchased at the famous sales of Mariette, Soufflot, Breteuil, and Saint-Martin. Nice copy, we locate no copy in North America. Unidentified stamp on upper-left corner of title-page. ❧ Lugt 8068. MacMillan, E … [Click Below for Full Description]

Emerson, Ralph Waldo - his copy, signed)
[young Emerson's own copy, signed] Pastor of the First Church of Christ in Boston, who died May 12, 1811, in the forty-third year of his age. By Joseph Stevens Buckminster, Pastor of the Church in Brattle-Square, Boston. Published by Request. Boston: Printed by Joseph T. Buckingham, 1811. Original plain blue-grey wrappers (detached). Young Ralph Waldo Emerson's own copy -- signed by him -- of the sermon delivered upon the occasion of the burial of his own father. The Rev. William Emerson (1769-1811) died of stomach cancer just after his 42nd birthday, and just before his son Ralph's eighth birthday -- leaving his widow Ruth with a large family to support, and little means to do so. They lived for awhile in the parsonage of his Unitarian church, selling off his library and taking in boarders to pay the bills (including the father's considerable debt); the family would thereafter rent various quarters, each time taking in boarders. Although his father had provided a good role model of generosity to the poor, as with his support of the Female Asylum, Ralph's later sympathy for the marginalized came mostly from his own experience of poverty.~This is the printing, "published by request," of the sermon delivered upon the occasion of the burial of William (at 3:00 on the 16th -- four days after his death). Ralph Waldo and his brother William walked behind the hearse that day, led by the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company; years later, he would remember the day more for the pomp and pageantry than for any sadness or grief -- as most of his lasting memories of his father were t … [Click Below for Full Description]

CHARDIN, Sir John.
Le Normant Imprimeur-Libraire Paris, 1811. Folio. With 85 engravings on 64 sheets (9 folding), including 1 map, portrait of Chardin, 18 sheets with double-illustrations and 1 sheet with 4; light waterstain on lower margin of several leaves. Near contemporary half polished calf over marbled boards; a bit rubbed. A very good copy of the atlas from the most desirable edition enhanced with new and larger plates. 'Chardin was a Huguenot who was forced to emigrate to England. He was knighted by Charles II and on his death was buried in Westminster Abbey. His first visit to the East was made in 1665, at the age of twenty-two, when he both gratified a love of travelling and carried on his trade as a dealer in jewels. His more important voyage was made in 1671. His route differed from that usually taken by travellers to the East Indies in that he proceeded by way of the Black Sea and the countries bordering thereon' (Cox I p 249-250). 'Chardin set out for Persia for a second time in August 1671, but on this occasion diverted through Smyrna and Constantinople, and took the Black Sea Route to Caucasia, Mingrelia and Georgia, finally arriving at Esfahan in June 1673. In Georgia he heard of a race of warlike women, the Amazons, who had at some time in the recent past invaded a kingdom to the northwest. He remained in Persia for four years, as he says 'chiefly following the court in its removals, but also making some particular journeys., as well as studying the language.' He apparently knew Esfahan better than Paris, and visited nearly every part of the country. His account of the Persi … [Click Below for Full Description]

GAUSS, Carl Friedrich.
Dieterich 1811, 1813, 1816, 1820, 1828, Göttingen. First editions, journal issues, of thirteen important papers by Gauss, including works on the fundamental theorem of algebra, number theory, hypergeometric functions, approximation theory, differential geometry, gravitation, and celestial mechanics. ?Gauss ranks, together with Archimedes and Newton, as one of the greatest geniuses in the history of mathematics? (Printing & the Mind of Man, p. 155). ?In his first years at Göttingen, Gauss experienced a second upsurge of ideas and publications in various fields of mathematics. Among the latter were several notable papers inspired by his work on the tiny planet Pallas, perturbed by Jupiter [including Disquisitio de elementis ellipticis palladis]; Disquisitlones generates circa seriem infinitam, an early rigorous treatment of series and the introduction of the hypergeometric functions, ancestors of the ?special functions? of physics; Methodus nova integralium valores per approximationem invenlendi, an important contribution to approximate integration; ? and Determinatio attractionis quam in punctum quodvis positionis datae exerceret planeta si eius massa per totam orbitam ratione temporis quo singulae partes describuntur uniformiter esset dispertita, which showed that the perturbation caused by a planet is the same as that of an equal mass distributed along its orbit in proportion to the time spent on an arc. At the same time Gauss continued thinking about unsolved mathematical problems ? By 1817 Gauss was ready to move toward geodesy ? the period of preoccupation with geodesy … [Click Below for Full Description]

A delightful narrative of the adventures, misfortunes, and hairbreadth escapes of a picaresque traveler, chiefly in Europe and the southern United States. Oehler, according to his own account, was born in Germany in 1781. He came to America early in 1800, landing first at Baltimore, then journeying through Maryland and Virginia. In 1801 he left for Santo Domingo, where he arrived in the midst of the black insurrection, was taken to Toussaint, and joined the insurrectionary army. The next year he was in South Carolina, where he learned to build hot-air balloons and did public ascensions there and in Georgia and Tennessee. He next learned legerdemain and conducted seances, attracting crowds and filling his pockets. Over the next several years he added fireworks and atmospheric electricity to his bag of tricks, traveling throughout the south before heading north to Philadelphia, then New Jersey. The appendix following the text describes some of the technical principles behind his slight-of-hand and electricity demonstrations. WOODVILLE, William.
Cheltenham: Printed for J. and J. Griffith, 1811. 1. FIRST EDITION, and one of the most important works on vaccination after Jenner's Inquiry itself: the first large-scale clinical trial of vaccination. "News of Jenner's discovery had aroused interest among medical men, but his source of vaccine had been lost and further experiments with the new procedure were therefore impossible. Woodville remedied this in January 1799, when he was told of an outbreak of cowpox in a London dairy. Having compared the lesions among the milkers with Jenner's illustration, Woodville took some fluid for use as vaccine at the Smallpox Hospital. The results of this action, the first large-scale trial of vaccination, were published as the Report of a Series of Inoculations for the Variolae vaccinae or Cow Pox (1799). Its case histories of two hundred vaccinations, most of which were subsequently tested by inoculation, did much to prove the efficacy of the new practice" (ODNB). 2 leaves, 156 pages. 2. SOLE EDITION. "However, the Reports [see item 1 above] also cast the first doubts as to the merits of vaccination. Woodville noted that vaccination frequently produced smallpox-like eruptions which he believed might communicate smallpox. This undermined one of the principal advantages of the new practice over inoculation--patients did not have to be isolated. Woodville's observation sparked off a dispute between Woodville and Jenner. Jenner blamed Woodville's results on contaminated vaccine: Woodville responded with his Observations on Cow-Pox (1800) arguing that hybridization between cowpox and sma … [Click Below for Full Description]

Genlis, Stephanie Felicite, Comtesse de. Colour-printed mythological emblems
Paris, Charles Barrois, 1810-1811. 2 volumes in 8vo. [4] + xxx + 166 (misprinted 266)p; [4] + iv + 228p + [1]f. With 78 stipple-engraved colour-printed plates by Gaitte after designs by the author. Contemporary mottled calf; gilt; lightly worn. First editions of both volumes printed in colour of this exquisite emblem book on Greek and Roman gods, their attributes and qualities. Each deity or virtue is illustrated by the name calligraphically composed and ingeniously entwined with pictorial symbols. Madame de Genlis (1746-1830) became governess to the future king, Louis-Philippe, in 1782, instilling in him liberal ideas. Her teaching anticipated modern methods particularly in her use of visual equivalents to absorb knowledge in a way best suited to the individual. Favourable to the Revolution, she nevertheless spent six years abroad between 1793 and 1799 when Napoleon honoured her with a pension of 6000 francs and apartments at the Arsenal. The present publication draws inspiration from icons of empire. The work was issued in black-and-white, with a few copies produced in delicate colour printing. We are offering the coloured issue. Several plates are signed by the engraver (Antoine Joseph) Gaitte (b.1753) who, among others, worked for the architect, Claude Nicholas Ledoux. A well preserved, fresh set; with contemporary armorial bookplate of the politician and bibliophile, Alexandre-Charles-Omer Rousselin de Corbeau, comte de Saint-Albin (1773-1847) incorporating motto, ‘Nil Nisi Virtute’, inside front cover of each volume. [FRESENIUS, Johann Franz Theodor].
Jenaische Allg. Literatur-Zeit. VIII.II (no. 110, 15 May 1811); KVK (5, 3 & 1 copies); WorldCat (4, 1 & 1 copies). First and only edition, including the two rare supplements, of a work on quadrature that the author calls a "new very simple theory for squaring curved surfaces based on the summation of infinite series," intended to make differential and integral calculus unnecessary. His goal is to demonstrate the usefulness of sums of infinite series in place of differential and integral calculus. The 1811 review found little new in Fresenius's "theory" and noted its similarity to the methods of John Wallis's 1656 Arithmeticam Infinitorum. Little is known about the author, who signed only the dedications, but parts 1 and 2 are dedicated to teachers, suggesting he was still young. Fresenius is therefore probably the identically named author of a half dozen works on religion, history and education published in Frankfurt in the years 1836 to 1853, including Zur Geschichte der Erfindung des Buchdrucks. In very good condition, with part 3 slightly browned and its edges tattered. An immature mathematical work by a curious author, with the rare supplements containing clues to his early life.

CHASTENET DE PUYSEGUR (Marquis A.M.J. de)
Paris, Dentu, 1811. cart. papier marbré bleu moderne genre ancien, bon exemplaire à toutes marges. Caillet n°2276 - Crabtree n° 237 "A significant study of natural and magnetic somnambulism by the discoverer of the latter." - Wellcome II.331 - Hirsch IV.691 - Eimas Heirs of Hippocrates n° 1097. in 8°, de 5ff. Robert Kerr (1757-1813)
Edinburgh & London: William Blackwood; J. Murray; J. Cuming, 1811. First edition, first printing of 16 (of 18) volume set. 1811-1815. Matching half leather and marbled boards. Very good condition. Front and bottom edges trimmed with light decorative sprinkled marbling. To my untrained eye I think these may have had the spines expertly relaid or repaired approximately 100 or more years ago (see scan). Boards appear original. Volume 10 has a more recent matching spine. Internally they are excellent in every way. Occasional pencil notations on endpapers but no other markings. Set looks to have been collected sequentially and carefully maintained since. All bindings are sound. Volumes are complete with all maps and endpapers; measure 8 3/8 x 5 1/2 inches (21 x 13.5 cm). Volumes 1-16 were issued between 1811 and 1815. Volumes 17 and 18 are absent. The author died in 1813 so no doubt there were delays in publishing the final volumes and the original collector lost interest. I believe v. 17 was issued in 1816 and v. 18 in 1824. The present set contains 16 maps and one folding plate (Captain Cook's Polynesian vocabulary). This is a compilation of journals and texts from every major European voyage of discovery from antiquity to 1800. Kerr is not so much an author as an editor. Wherever possible he reproduced the original texts and journals. He edited them to reduce redundancy but maintain fidelity to the original text. His first volume shows the trouble he went to. He has rendered into English 9th century Icelandic texts then proceeds on to 9th and 10th century Anglo-Saxon texts. … [Click Below for Full Description]

Internally a fine crisp copy. The second and best edition of this interesting work. Lada-Mocarski lists this edition rather than the first (Milan, 1810) as the preferable one. It is the supposed narrative of a voyage through the Polar Sea and the Straits of Anian to the west coast of America in 1588, performed by Laurent Ferrer Maldonado. Carlo Amoretti, the librarian of the Biblioteca Ambrosiana in Milan, believed in the authenticity of the narrative and saw it into print. Skeptics quickly attacked the work, and by the mid-19th century it had been established as spurious by further discovery, but at the time of publication it caused a lively debate and fueled further interest in northwest exploration. The first map, which takes up an entire folding sheet, traces Maldonado's supposed route through the polar region. The other six maps are contained on a single sheet and depict various points in the polar regions. The folding plan contains three topographical views of the Straits of Anian. HOWES F95. ARNIM, LUDWIG ACHIM V.
[Click Below for Full Description]

Telfair, Charles].
London, Thomas Egerton (back of title-page and colophon: G. Hayden), 1811. 8vo. (6), 116 pp. With a folding lithographed plan of Saint-Denis. Contemporary dark green cloth, rebacked with the original backstrip laid down. Rare first and only edition of a firsthand account of the British invasion of the Island of Bourbon (Réunion) in 1810 by "an officer of the expedition", sometimes ascribed to Charles Telfair (1778-1833), an Irish botanist who visited Réunion and Mauritius in 1810 as a ship's surgeon to the Royal Navy. The author briefly narrates the events leading up to the invasion, and in more detail describes the invasion itself, providing much information on the ships, squadrons, regiments and officers involved. "His object was to commemorate facts, while he was a spectator of them, and to stamp them with the sentiments they excited" (p. [5]). Also included are the general instructions and directions to officers at the head of brigades, issued by Lt. Col. Keating (pp. 38-53), and transcripts of letters, decrees and newspaper articles (or extracts thereof) relating to the invasion (pp. 54-102). The book closes with an appendix on the island's "value" as a colony, observing its population, climate, agriculture, trade, and infrastructure (pp. 103-116). The island of Bourbon in the Indian Ocean had been in French hands since 1715, until the British Royal Navy invaded it in 1810. The main objective of the expedition, led by Josias Rowley (1765-1842), was to capture the island as well as Mauritius so as "to secure, on the most permanent foundation, the dominion of England aga … [Click Below for Full Description]

THAER Albrecht Daniel
[Click Below for Full Description]

MICHAUD L. G. (-)
Paris, Michaud (poi, negli ultimi voll., Beck Libraire), 1811-57.
