Pittsburgh: Cramer, Spear, Eichbaum. Published 1811. 7th Edition, Improved and enlarged. 8vo, dark brown calf-backed marbled boards, 293 (1) pp, illustrated with woodcut maps and charts. Good copy with quite a bit of rubbing to boards, neat japanese paper reinforcement to front inner hinge, contents good to very good, tanning, p. 25/26 with substantial upper corner loss including some text (see pic.). Inscription from a James Emsile Oram Book. Rememberr i was the son [be?] you is the son / tell him i wont com Across and be a ason cace is is is son som derries.' (Can anyone make sense of that?). Also signed by a David Oram, with 'David Leonard Orams Book' on text page. We've found a farmer by that name in Knox County, Ohio who lived from 1767-1857, so that might be the match. Material on the Lewis and Clark expedition in this book preceeds the publication of their journals by 3 years, but was published after the Gass journal and other material. Still, early account of their expedition. Good.

Zebulon Montgomery Pike
Condition: Good with no dust jacket. London: Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, and Brown. Good with no dust jacket. 1811. First English Edition. Hardcover. Attractive 20th century brown moroccan over marbled boards with gold gilt title. New endpapers. Trimmed edges with very clean interior and very light foxing, except for folding map and title page which are foxed as are the first several pages. Title page and last page have archival repair. Owners signature on title page plus library stamp, which is the only such library marking noted. Includes both maps, one of which is folding. Editor Thomas Rees was 'mortified' at the American edition, which "work has been repinted in very nearly as incorrect a state as it appeared in the present Editor's copy." Pike led the first exploratory expedition into the American southwest by an American, using government funds. The peak outside Colorado Springs bears his name among many other landmarks named by the expedition. Jenkins states "Spanish authorities learned of his presence and sent a force to arrest him and his men. They were taken to Santa Fe and then sent on to Chihuahua. Pike's maps and papers were confiscated. Apparently he was able to convince the Spaniards that he had entered New Spain by accident, as he was escorted by armed guard through Texas via San Antonio where he was released. He arrived at Natchioches in June, 1807, having thus had the opportunity to examine New Mexico and Texas in some detail, at the expense of the Spanish government." 1811. très bon état, voir ci-dessous. Format 1 … [Click Below for Full Description]

The book offers one of the world's first collected descriptions of what builds nations' wealth and is today a fundamental work in classical economics. Through reflection over the economics at the beginning of the Industrial Revolution the book touches upon broad topics as Division of labour, productivity and free markets. Originally published in 1776, during the Scottish Enlightenment and the Scottish Agricultural Revolution, it influenced a number of authors and economists, as well as governments and organisations. For example, Alexander Hamilton was influenced in part by The Wealth of Nations to write his Report on Manufactures, in which he argued against many of Smith's policies. Interestingly, Hamilton based much of this report on the ideas of Jean-Baptiste Colbert, and it was, in part, Colbert's ideas that Smith responded to with The Wealth of Nations. The first known autobiography of a magician printed in America. The Life, Adventures, and Unparalleled Sufferings of Andrew Oehler. Trenton 1811. First edition. 12mo, 226 pages, complete. Scattered staining, endpapers have tears. Lacks the back cover, front leather cover held in place by old thread, spine deteriorated. Oehler, working in Germany as a tailor, managed to gain a small fortune through a scheme using a "phantasmagoria" illusion he probably learned by observing popular French magician Gaspar Robert. When his fortune's soured, he fled to the US, where he built and exhibited hot air balloons and performed magic. He traveled south through Charleston, New Orleans, Cuba and eventually Mexico, where he was thrown into an underground jail after creating a spiritualist illusion, similar to what he used in Europe, that was discovered to be a hoax. Oehler spend his later years in New Jersey. Considered the first book on magic published in the US. See Erik Barnouw, The Fantasms of Andrew Oehler, 2009.

Smith, Adam
London: Printed for J. Maynard and F. Zinke, 1811. Hard Cover. Very Good. Early edition. Three volumes. Finely bound in full contemporary brown tree calf, boards and spines decoratively ruled in gilt, black morocco spine labels lettered in gilt, blue marbled text block edges. A near fine set with some light wear to extremities, superficial cracking to the backstrips, bookplates to front pastedowns, Vol. II with a three-inch scratch to the rear board, Vol. III with front hinge lightly starting but still sturdy. Overall, a beautiful set. First published in 1776, The Wealth of Nations has been hailed as "The first and greatest classic of modern economic thought." The book is Smith's meditation on the influence of labor on economic development, the relationship of a nation's economy to its national development, and the intellectual underpinnings of a self-regulating, free-market economic system. A groundbreaking text, The Wealth of Nations had immediate widespread impact and continues to be a pillar of economic theory today. Indeed, the authors of Printing and the Mind of Man aver that "Where the political aspects of human rights had taken two centuries to explore, Smith's achievement was to bring the study of economic aspects to the same point in a single work." The founding of the New York Hospital, the second oldest hospital in New York City, was inspired by Samuel Bard's seminal Discourse upon the Duties of a Physician (1769). One page, in ink, on single folded leaf. Addressed on verso of conjugate leaf in Channing's hand. A few corrections to text. Rare, Early Channing letter, 1811. An extremely early letter from the 31-year-old Channing "on order" from the Committee of the Bible Society of Massachusetts: "... Dr. Morse has communicated to me a part of your letter to him in which you express your desire to be furnished with Bibles for distribution... I now have the measure to forward to you twelve Bibles for this purpose. We will thank you to communicate to us any information which would assist us in distributing the Bible. We are always happy to receive applications from ministers. Will you mention this to any of your brethren who are situated in parts of the country where the Bible is wanted ..." WATSON, White.
FIRST EDITION. One of the first English books to illustrate geological strata by the use of a section. "In 1811 and 1813 White Watson published two interesting little books describing Derbyshire strata, with a section across them. The section is nearly two feet long; the general broad anticlinal structure is well shown, but the vertical scale is so enormously exaggerated as to distort the natural arrangement. Ford (1960) ['White Watson (1760-1835) and his geological sections' in Proc. Geol. Ass., 71, 346-363] has recently thrown a flood of light on Watson and his work" (Challinor, p. 92). The section was originally made in 1794 as a tablet using specimens of the rocks themselves. "It was described briefly in an explanatory leaflet published at Bakewell in 1794, revised 1797, and much more fully in the [present] work of 1811, which is an interesting contribution to early stratigraphical literature" (Edwards, The early history of palaeontology, p. 54). This copy is bound with Rev. Samuel Pegge's Sketch of the history of Bolsover and Peak Castles, in the county of Derby (1785), and Charles Sylvester's The philosophy of domestic economy (1819), on the pioneering design of the Derbyshire Infirmary. This latter work is dedicated to William Strutt, who designed the heating and ventilating system for the Infirmary, and whose son Edward became Lord Belper. This is probably therefore the dedicatee's own copy.

WOODVILLE, William.
1. FIRST EDITION, and one of the most important works on vaccination after Jenner's Inquiry itself: the first large-scale clinical trial of vaccination. "News of Jenner's discovery had aroused interest among medical men, but his source of vaccine had been lost and further experiments with the new procedure were therefore impossible. Woodville remedied this in January 1799, when he was told of an outbreak of cowpox in a London dairy. Having compared the lesions among the milkers with Jenner's illustration, Woodville took some fluid for use as vaccine at the Smallpox Hospital. The results of this action, the first large-scale trial of vaccination, were published as the Report of a Series of Inoculations for the Variolae vaccinae or Cow Pox (1799). Its case histories of two hundred vaccinations, most of which were subsequently tested by inoculation, did much to prove the efficacy of the new practice" (ODNB). 2 leaves, 156 pages. 2. SOLE EDITION. "However, the Reports [see item 1 above] also cast the first doubts as to the merits of vaccination. Woodville noted that vaccination frequently produced smallpox-like eruptions which he believed might communicate smallpox. This undermined one of the principal advantages of the new practice over inoculation--patients did not have to be isolated. Woodville's observation sparked off a dispute between Woodville and Jenner. Jenner blamed Woodville's results on contaminated vaccine: Woodville responded with his Observations on Cow-Pox (1800) arguing that hybridization between cowpox and smallpox was impossible. Thereafter the dispute fizzl … [Click Below for Full Description]

Jackson, James Grey
London printed for the author by W. Bulmer & Co, 1811. Second edition, corrected and considerably enlarged. 4to (27.5 x 22 cm), pp.[iv], xvi, 328, frontispiece portrait, 12 plates, 6 folding, 3 coloured, 2 coloured folding maps. Two sheets of reprinted reviews tipped in. A very good copy bound in modern half morocco over cloth. Some spotting to plates. Presentation letter from the author to John Silvester, dated 2 July 1813, bound in with original wrapper. James Grey Jackson spent sixteen years in Morocco as British Consul at Mogador and traded throughout the region. In 1806 he was the first to report that Mungo Park had reached Timbuktu, and first published this account, based on his Moroccan experiences, in 1809. Jackson describes the culture, geography, flora, and fauna of the Barbary coast and its interior in great depth. His observations on the nature of the bubonic plague are incisive; his descriptions of the other ailments common in the region and the local materia medica employed are unusually open to the efficacy of non-European practices. Adam Smith
London: J. Maynard and F. Zinke, 1811. Fifth edition. Complete in three volumes. CONDITION Rebound in tree calf bindings with handwritten calf spine labels. Externally, boards are sound, but with rubbing to extremities and spines. Two spine labels are slightly lifting. All hinges are very slightly strained. Internally, firmly bound, bright and generally clean, aside from light spotting to endpapers. Overall Condition: Very Good.
