"It is probable that his work more profoundly influenced later mathematical research than did that of any of his contemporaries, although it was an era of giants in ths field" (Smith, History of Mathematics, I, p. 485). Il libro "which laid the foundation of modern mechanics... occupies a place in the history of the subject second only to Newton"s Principia" (Wolf, History of Science in the 18th century, pp. 69 - 70). D.S.B., VII, 570: "Lagrange decided, that the work should have a seconde edition incorporating certain advances...The first volume of the second edition appeared in 1811. Lagrange died while working on the second volume, which was not published until 1816 [la data al frontespizio è tuttavia quella del 1815]... "In this book, Lagrange intended to show that power series expansions are sufficient to provide differential calculus with a solid foundation. Today mathematicians are partially returning to this conception in treating the formal calculus of series. As early as 1812, however J.M.H. Wronski objected to Lagrange's claims. The subsequent opposition of Cauchy was more effective. Nevertheless, Lagrange's point of view could not be totally neglected. Completed by convergence considerations, it dominated the study of the functions of a complex variable throughout the nineteenth century"".

The Life of Sir Michael Foster, Sometime one of the Judges of the Court of King's Bench and Record of Bristol. By his Nephew, The Late Micharel Dodson, Barrister at Law.

      London: Printed by J. Nichols and Son. for J. Johnson and Co. 1811 - Tall 8vo, 238 x 132 mms., pp. viii, 93 [94 blank], engraved portrait (off-setting on title-page), attractively bound in full contemporary red morocco, panelled in gilt and blind on cover, gilt spine, all edges gilt; mild foxing throughout (Preface rather more severely foxed), some slight wear to spine, but a very good copy, with the armorial bookplate of Michael Foster Ward on the front paste-down end-paper, and on the recto of the front free end-paper, a transcript from one of Horace Walpole's letters to George Montau, describing Sir Michael's death as a "greater loss to his country than the prim attorney general." The nephew, Michael Dodson (1732 - 1799) made a draft, dated 7 February 1795, of his uncle's life, which he sent to editor of Biographia Britannica, Andrew Kippis (1725 - 1795), and it was published in the last issue of that journal, most copies of which were destroyed in a later fire. The present edition was prepared by the barrister and art collector John Disney (1779 - 1857). It was warmly and lengthily (twelve pages) reviewed in The Monthly Review for 1813, concluding "we have no doubt that this small volume will be esteemed a valuable addition both to legal and general biography."       Three facsimile illus. in the text. iv, 34 pp. 8vo, cont. red half-morocco & brown drab boards, sides ruled in blind, spine lettered in gilt, a.e.g. London: Printed by W. Bulmer, 1811. First edition, limited to 36 copies only (so printed on the half-title), and a presentation copy, inscribed on the free front endpaper "With the Author's respectful Compts." This is the very rare specimen of what was to ultimately become the great catalogue of the Spencer Collection, published as the Bibliotheca Spenceriana (1814-15) in four volumes with three volumes of supplements appearing in 1822-23. In the rather charming "Address" which serves as the introduction, Dibdin asks for corrections to be pointed out to him "over a home-cook'd beaf-steak, lightly sprinkled with snow-white horse-radish, and flanked with the best lettuce my garden can bestow." A fine and lovely copy. Armorial bookplate, apparently of the Eliot family (their motto: "Credunt quod vident"), and the leather bookplate of Howard Lehman Goodhart, one of Dr. Rosenbach's good clients and father of Phyllis Goodhart Gordan. ❧ Windle & Pippin A17-"It may not be exaggerating to add that this was the most important prospectus of the many 'fliers' that Dibdin put abroad in his long career."         PLAN GENERAL DE UNA SUBSCRIPCION PATRIOTICA EN AMERICA

      Havana: Pedro Nolasco Palmer, 1811. [1],11pp. Small quarto. Loose leaves. Light dampstaining, titlepage tanned and somewhat foxed. Good plus. A Cuban imprint of an appeal first printed in Cadiz to establish a patriotic fund for the Spanish army to fight against the rebellion of its colonies in South America. The author, Francisco Montalvo y Ambulodi, was a field marshal of the Spanish military and would later become governor and viceroy of New Granada (present day Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, and Panama). The establishment of the fund was a preliminary to the Spanish reconquista of parts of South America in 1815-16. Extremely rare, as are most early Cuban imprints, with one copy recorded by OCLC at the National Library of Chile, and another located in the National Library of Spain. PALAU 177398n. OCLC 55245566.

        Le Nouveau Testament de Notre Seigneur Jésus Christ Imprimé sur l'édition de Paris, de l'année 1805, revue et corrigée avec soin d'après le texte grec

      chez les Libraires Associés (Lincoln & Edmands, imprimeurs), Boston 1811 - 379, [1, colophon] & 4 pages; Contemporary full sheepskin leather, with faint decorative stained pattern on covers, flat spine paneled by simple gilt rules, red label lettered in gilt, edges decoratively stained yellow. 12mo, gathered in sixes (half-sheets). A - 2H6. 379, [1, colophon] & 4 pp. ["Books for Sale by John West & Co., ."] This is a very good example of the first American edition of the Protestant text of the French New Testament of the Bible, the version translated by Jean-Frédéric Osterwald. Its publication followed by one year the publication, also in Boston, of the first American edition of any New Testament in French -- ["Le Nouveau Testament de Notre Seigneur Jésus Christ, en Français, sur la Vulgate -- translated by Isaac-Louis Le Maistre de Sacy. Boston: J.T. Buckingham, 1810. The so-called "Port-Royal Bible."] At the end, there is a four-page catalogue of books for sale by a number of booksellers in Boston and New England -- ["Valuable books for sale by John West & Co. William Wells, William Andrews, Oliver C. Greenleaf, Edward Cotton, Lincoln & Edmands, Munroe & Francis, James W. Burditt & Co. and West & Blake, Boston. William Hilliard, Cambridge, and E. Little & Co., Newburyport."] Since these two leaves are printed integrally with the text (as leaves 2H5 & 6), it seems logical that the booksellers specifically named in this interesting priced catalogue of books available are also the booksellers who shared the edition of this important Protestant New Testament. The printers are identified by their slug at the foot of the final page of the main text, otherwise blank: "Lincoln & Edmands, imprimeurs, no. 53, Cornhill, a` Boston." This is an excellently preserved, unmarked copy. The binding, almost certainly original, is missing a triangular chip at the head of the spine. There is a small part of the corner of the front free-endpaper torn away (no marks of any sort on this leaf). The title page and the next leaf show faint toning around the edges (transfers from the turn-under of the leather used in binding). There is also one leaf text leaf [Y6 = pp. 275-6] with a portion missing at the lower corner, affecting a few words of the text on each side. This irregularity extends up along the fore-edge as a rough deckle, demonstrating that this is almost certainly a paper flaw, rather than a tear caused by use or abuse of this copy. The paper does display moderate scattered foxing and a few small brown stains throughout, as one might expect from American book paper of the time. The French text is set in double columns throughout -- the columns are separated by a single vertical rule. Scarce in commerce, this edition is fairly well represented in institutional holdings [see OCLC: 7919687]. Not in the 'Catalogue of books contained in the Library of the American Bible Society' - 1855 (see p. 42, where this should be right under the 1810 Boston edition, translated by Isaac-Louis Le Maistre de Sacy.) The American Bible Society did publish its own edition of this translation, just four years later -- [A` New-York: : Imprimé aux frais et sous l'inspection de la société établie dans cette ville sous le titre de "The New-York Bible Society." Chez J. Seymour, imprimeur, John-Street, no. 49., 1815.] And in 1820, the society did issue a version with stereotyped (metal cast) plates -- [Edition stéréotype, revue et corrigée avec soin d'apres les textes hebreu et grec. A` New-York: : Imprimé avec des planches solides, aux frais de la Société biblique americaine par Daniel Fanshaw., 1820.] The many and various descendants of this stereotyped edition are fairly common, but this 1811 letterpress edition is not frequently found.         Eerste beginselen der kruid-kunde IIde[-IIIde] deel. Tot onderrichting en vermaak voor het schoone geslacht, als ook voor die genen die de eerste beginselen der kruidkunde beöefenen.Amsterdam, Jan Barend Elwe, 1810. 2 (of 3) volumes. 12mo. With 2 engraved title-pages, and 36 botanical flower and herb plates: 4 in volume 2 and 32 in volume 3. Contemporary boards covered with the original publisher's engraved paper.

      Kinderen lazen, kinderen lezen 349; KVK & WorldCat (8 copies); NCC (6 of the same 8 copies); Saakes V (1811), p. 212. Beautifully illustrated and hand-coloured introduction to herbs and flowers, designed to teach women and girls the principles of botany, with 36 plates in the present 2 (of 3) volumes (all 32 plates of individual species plus 4 of the 10 detail plates). It first appeared serially in Almanach der kruid-kunde published in four annual volumes for the years 1800 to 1803, but for the present independent publication the almanac elements were dropped and the botanical texts and plates of the four volumes rearranged in three volumes. The book names no author but was in fact prepared by the celebrated botanist Johan Carl Krauss (1759-1826). The 4 plates in volume II, numbered Pl. VII-X, show 131 detail figures numbered per plate. Each of the 32 plates in volume III shows one whole plant and is preceded by a letterpress leaf giving a 2-page account of the plant and its botanical characteristics. These plates are not numbered, but each gives the number of the botanical class of the plant species, Cl. I-VI, VIII-XXIII (there was never a text or plate for class VII).With an old owner's inscription and modern bookplate. Lacking volume I (with plates I-VI) and with some water stains at the head of the title-page and a few text leaves in vol. II, but otherwise in good condition. The bindings are rubbed and the spines restored (with the loss of most of the engraved backstrips). A rare and lovely little introduction to botany for women and girls, with 36 hand-coloured botanical plates.

        Sermon que en el Aniversario Solemne de Gracias a Maria Santisima de los Remedios, celebrado en esta Santa Iglesia Catedral el Dia 30 de Octubre de 1811 por la Victoria del Monte de las Cruces . [and] Noticias para la Historia de Nuestra Senora de los Remedios .

      Arizpe 1811 and 1812, Mexico - Small quarto, 269 pp with 1 engraving: two works with continuous pagination but separate title pages. Monte de las Cruces was the highwater mark of Hidalgo's revolt against the Spanish Viceregal regime: Mexico City lay before him, but against the judgement of Allende he withdrew and probably lost the golden opportunity to bring the revolution to victory. This sermon is obviously from the royalist side and occupies 59 pp of text. Of the remainder, a history of the image of Our Lady of Remedies, from its arrival in Mexico with the Conquistadores, Sabin quotes Stevens (presumably the Catalogue of American Books in the British Museum, 1866): "An extraordinary volume of considerable interest. According to the pious author, Our Lady of Mexico . seems not only to have taken an active interest in the spiritual welfare of the faithful, but seems to have done her best to thwart the schemes of the rebels and republicans in the various provinces of Mexico. She set her face firmly against the spirit of Mexican independence, and became quite a politician, but always attached to the royal party. The pious political fraud s contained in this volume must ever give it a prominent place among the books relating to the history of the Mexican Revolution." The plate is a depiction of strange celestial portents that occurred during this time. Contemporary full calf binding, with gilt devices on covers and spine, gilt title and florons also on spine; original marbled endpapers. Very clean and nice copy in an excellent period binding.         A Catalogue of Books, in the Various Branches of Literature, which Lately formed the Library of a Distinguished Collector;

      and were Sold by Auction by Mr. Jeffery, of Pall Mall: with their Prices, and Purchasers' Names. 2 p.l., 384 pp. Tall 8vo, cont. marbled boards (carefully rebacked & recornered in sheep), flat spine gilt, uncut. London: P. Martin, 1811. The interest aroused by the Heath sale, which took place in April and May of 1810, appears to have been so widespread that the publishers felt justified in republishing the sale catalogue later in 1810, together with the prices realized and the buyers names. They added twenty-two lots, Nos. 4787-4809, which had not appeared in the original catalogue, but were obviously offered at the end of the sale. According to Fletcher, perhaps only 250 copies of the republished catalogue were printed. Due to continued great demand, a new edition of the enlarged second catalogue was prepared in 1811, with a different printer and publisher. Our copy of this new edition is a fine uncut copy, printed on special fine paper, with the printed names of the buyers and prices and the additional lots. It is rare. Benjamin Heath (1704-66), classical scholar and book collector, "was a collector of rare books from the age of thirteen, and in his lifetime distributed his library between two of his sons, but still left a large collection. There was printed in 1810 a 'Catalogue'. Heath was the principal collector of this library, but it was augmented by his son, the Rev. Benjamin Heath."-D.N.B., IX, pp. 339-40. The sale, which provoked Dibdin to paroxysms of enthusiasm (see his Bibliomania, 1811), realized 8,899 pounds. But its contents no longer belonged to Heath: he had sold it for 3,000 pounds to two booksellers, Cuthell and Martin, who then, at a huge profit, had them auctioned by Jeffrey. Heber was the chief buyer at this sale. Fine and handsome copy from the library of A.R.A. Hobson with bookplate. .

        Afbeeldingen van de Kleeding, Zeden en Gewoonten in Holland, met den aanvang der negentiende eeu: Tableaux Des Habillements, des Moeurs et des Costumes en Hollande au Commencement du Dix-Neuvième Siècle.

      4to. Finely and handsomely bound in half tan Regency calf over marbled boards, the spine with 5 raised bands exquisitely and extravagantly decorated in gilt in compartments with a repeating scroll-tool design, lettered direct in gilt, marbled endpapers and edges, housed within a custom-made beige cloth-covered fall-down-back box with green cloth label lettered in gilt; pp. [58]; with fine stipple-engraved, and hand-coloured, allegorical frontispiece of the Muse of Drawing by Louis Portman after Jacques Kuyper, together with 20 other fine, and exquisite, engraved plates with detailed and expert hand-colouring throughout; a wonderfully pleasing copy; externally fine; recently expertly, and invisibly, rejointed at upper board by Charles Gledhill, internally also preserved in exceptionally crisp state with occasional very light, and inoffensive, browning and spotting (almost exclusively confined to text pages) and some of the unavoidable offsetting from plates to blank guards, with a neat contemporary inscription, dated 1817, to front blank. Early, revised, edition, complete with an additional 4 plates, with extensive explanatory text in both Dutch and French. This work originally appeared in 5 instalments from 1803 to 1807, with a total of 16 plates. All images carry the imprint of Evert Maaskamp and Colnaghi & Co., apart from plate 1, which only mentions the Dutch printer. It is a historically, ethnologically, and culturally, important volume of prints of costumes of the various Batavian provinces, designed to underline their antique origin, and their "absolute Dutchness". The venture was also, in part, a propaganda exercise, designed to reinforce Dutch national identity following a period of political unrest. Similar works had appeared in France, England, Germany and Switzerland in response to the growing intellectual interest in the study of popular culture. This also stimulated artistic, and commercial, competition between nations. The beautiful and animated backgrounds which were drawn from nature, the beautifully observed and documented details of costume (which were drawn from life), and the extensive anecdotal text, provide a social, cultural, and historical context for the dress (Eveline Koolhaas-Grosfeld. "Une nouvelle image des Pays-Bas: l'identité nationale par l'estampe").

        Conchology or the Natural History of Shells.

      London, William Miller. (1811). - Tall folio (10.5 x 16.5 ins, 270 x 420mm) FINELY BOUND IN CONTEMPORARY DARK GREEN MOROCCO, TOOLED IN BLIND AND GILT, RAISED BANDS, ALL EDGES GILT, stitching partly split at one gathering . Complete with 60 superb hand-coloured aquatint plates. Occasional very light offset onto the text but the plates themselves FREE FROM THE USUAL OFFSET FROM THE TEXT. In my experience, the colouring can vary considerably from copy to copy, even becoming a uniform sludgy brown. The colouring here, and the images themselves, are exceptionally crisp, bright and varied. All in all a Superb Example. At the time of publication Perry was castigated for the fanciful nature of the shells he illustrated, being accused of inventing both the forms and colours of his specimens. However time has proved him to be correct and his detractors merely jealous cynics. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        MEMOIRS OF GENERAL WILKINSON. VOLUME II [all published]

      Washington: Printed for the Author, 1811. [6],[3]-18,[3]-99,[1],136pp. Modern half morocco and marbled boards, spine gilt. Two titlepages and advertisement leaf supplied from another copy and washed. Contemporary gift inscription and ownership signature on front fly leaves. Evenly tanned. A very good copy, untrimmed. Second issue of this very rare pre-issue of Wilkinson's MEMOIRS..., with the added titlepage, "Burr's conspiracy exposed...." Only this "Volume II" was ever issued in this format. According to the Advertisement for the book, Wilkinson was compelled to print this single volume of his MEMOIRS... "to meet the torrent of vilification" against him as a result of his involvement in the Burr conspiracy. "This book was issued by Wilkinson in his own vindication, and also as a reply to Daniel Clark, who had endeavored to prove that Wilkinson was corrupt, and had been concerned with Burr" - Tompkins. This is Wilkinson's first public statement on the Burr Conspiracy, and is an entirely different book from what eventually appeared as the second volume of his MEMOIRS... in 1816. It is also exceedingly rare. STREETER SALE 1700. TOMPKINS 107. SABIN 104028. HOWES W428.

        LA UNION INDISOLUBLE. AVISO Á LOS INCAUTOS AMERICANOS CONTRA LA SEDUCCIONES DE NAPOLEON BONAPARTE, Y MAXÍMAS DE LOS NUEVOS FILOSOFOS

      Havana: Don Esteban Joseph Boloña, 1811. [6],28pp. Quarto. Half modern polished calf and linen-covered boards, spine gilt. Minor instances of light foxing at edges of first and last printed leaves. Lower corner of rear fly leaf torn. A very good copy. An extremely rare early 19th-century Havana imprint defending the monarchy and Spanish sovereignty on the Peninsula and in the New World against Napoleon and the negative influences of other contemporary philosophies. Issued during the Peninsular War, Figuera de Vargas' pamphlet was intended to promote the continued union of the Spanish realm in both hemispheres and to serve as a warning against the "seductive" elements of the French invasion and other pernicious influences. Due to a combination of climate and often poor paper quality, colonial-era Cuban imprints are rare. Not recorded in OCLC or Palau.
