Poems by William Cowper of the Inner Temple. In two volumes

London - J. Johnson, 1811. London - J. Johnson, 1811 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A wonderful collection of Cowper's evocative poetry. A New Edition. Complete in two volumes. Printer's ink stamp of T. Bensley, London, to title verso. The stages of William Cowper's life: forced into a career in the law that he did not want, forbidden from marrying the woman he loved, and insensed by certain religious and political views of his cousin, can be found within the lines of his verse. His words very much encapsulate the zeitgeist of the late 1700s. The religious tone of The Task, its domesticity, and its treatment of such topics as slavery and consideration for animals, areall anticipated themes associated with the evangelical revival which began in the late 1780s. The clash between Cowper's horror at his cousin's theories and his sense of family and personal obligations unleashed a great burst of creative energy. In the four months from December 1780 to March 1781 Cowper composed 2700 lines of verse, moral satires, in pentameter couplets. This portrait of a man divided particularly demonstrates the conflicting nature of the era. DNBCondition: In decorative full calf bindings. Externallysmart with only mild wear to extremities. The front joints are starting. Internally, firmly bound. Generally bright and clean with just occasional light spotting to first and last few pages as usual. There is a previous owner's label with copperplate signature to front free-endpaper. Overall: VERY GOOD..

An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations. 3 Bände (komplett). With a life of the author.

London: Printed for Maynard; an F. Zinke; 1811.. 22,5 cm. lxxi, 360; vi, 512; vi, 448 S., Index. Ohldr. Beck, 1976. 1. Aufl. XIV, 311 S. Oln. - OS. Sehr guter Zustand. Mit halbseitiger Widmung des Autors. = Zum 200. Geburtstag des Klassikers 'Der Wohlstand der Nationen'. Die geistige Grundlage der modernen Marktwirtschaft 1776-1976.

That Horse is held in the same contempt in Leicestershire, as a Coxcomb holds a Country Bumpkin. In vulgar Countries, (i.e. all others) where these Accomplishments are not Indispensable, he may be a Hunter." Signed: Billesdon Coplow (engraved title).Sir Robert Frankland (1784-1849), Seventh Baron of Thirkelby, was an MP and artist, a talented amateur who later succeeded to the baronetcy as Sir Robert Frankland-Russell. He was the almost exact contemporary of Henry Alken Senior and this set of engravings was the inspiration for Alken’s Qualified Horses and Unqualified Riders. In 1815, Henry Alken published a rejoinder to Indispensable Accomplishments: Qualified Horses and Unqualified Riders, or The Reverse of Sporting Phrases Taken from the Work Entitled Indispensable Accomplishments: "In looking over that very amusing work call’d Indispensable Accomplishments sign’d Billesdon Coplow with which I was very much delighted but could not forbear remarking that he consider’d it only necessary that the horse should come well into the next field, charge an ox fence, go in and out clever, face a brook & swish at a rasper he does not mention that to do all that kind of thing it is necessary he should be mounted by a rider of judgment and courage. I have undertaken beging [sic] his pardon to mount well qualified horses with unqualified riders and to shew the figure those horses are likely to cut during the day" (Tooley 44: "The first of Alken’s coloured books").The Plates:1.         The historie of Cambria, now called Wales: A part of the most famous Yland of Brytaine, written in the Brytish language aboue two hundred yeares past [1584]

Reprinted for John Harding, London, 1811. Reprint of original 1584 ed. xxxvi+355pp. Rebacked, spine with 7 raised bands, decorative tooling in between and gilt letters giving the title as Lhoyd's Cambria by Powel. Each account of a specific ruler is preceded by a small engraving purporting to represent the person concerned. Marbled endpapers, front board has some marks and scuffing, inside clean and bright. Started as a translation with amendments of Brut y Tywysogion, a Welsh version of 12th century texts originally in Latin, but probably representing the work of several contributors, making the attribution to Caradoc alone unsafe. Nevertheless an important historical source, beginning with Cadwaladr in the 7th and ending with Llywelyn ap Gruffydd in the 13th century, followed by English-born princes of Wales up to 1564. This book also contains the first printed account in English of how the son of one of the Princes, Madoc ap Owen Gwynedd, discovered America in 1170, over 300 years before Columbus.
