In 1806 Ripley Preached to U.S. Congress incl. Thomas Jefferson & Aaron Burr!! 1810 Dorothy Ripley Conversion "THE EXTRAORDINARY CONVERSION, AND RELIGIOUS EXPERIENCE OF DOROTHY RIPLEY.." _____________________________________________________________________ Dorothy Ripley (1767-1831), missionary, was born on 24 April 1767 in Whitby, Yorkshire, the second daughter in the large family of Dorothy and William Ripley (1739-1784), of Whitby. Her father was a master mason and a Methodist minister. Dorothy learned to pray at two or three, and felt chosen to preach the gospel to the heathen from eleven. Her teenage years were turbulent, marked by a suicide attempt in 1783, and in 1784 the death of her beloved father. At about twenty, on her way 'to meeting', she encountered a group of sailors who had just stripped, tarred, and feathered a beautiful girl 'ruined by a snare'. Ripley 'became servant to this miserable female', helped her on with borrowed clothes, 'lifted up my eyes to Heaven, and asked, Why is this not me Lord?' Later, in her prison visiting, she always sought out prostitutes for kindness. In 1802, already a minister for ten years, Dorothy Ripley set out to preach to 'Ethiopia's children' living under 'base tyranny' in 'the large cities of America'. Several times she returned home because of illness, but never for long. She maintained links with the Quakers but made a point of religious independence: 'As I am not a member of any community, no society can answer for my irregular conduct.' She valued herself on being self-supporting, 'enabled to pay my own expenses many ti … [Click Below for Full Description]

London: J. Bysh, 1810. Condition: Good +. Charming children's tale of the life and death of Cock Robin, with 13 (including the title page) beautiful hand-colored illustrations accompanying the text-in-verse. Undated but very likely early 19th century, possibly circa 1810. Also includes the original pictorial wrappers, with a pasted-on title illustration (the 14th hand-colored plate) at the front panel. Pronounced creasing to the fragile original wrappers, spotting and creasing to the endsheets and pastedowns. Still though, very presentable --and the hand-colored plates, which show very light foxing and occasional, forgivable soiling, are bright and crisp. 16mo, quite scarce in its original printing. "Here lies Cock Robin, Dead and Cold: His End this Book, Will soon unfold." (from the title page).

Chaseretto, Jan Pertista
[England?]: [c. 1810]. Broadside, 12.25" x 7.63", text beginning with: "This is an account of the remarkably sympathetic power of the CHINESE SENSITIVE LEAF, invented by one of the most celebrated operators, by the name of Jan Pertista Chaseretto, from China..." Old folds with some minor loss at creases, manuscript address from a Mr. "Eaton" to "Alexander L..." on verso. Lacking the leaves themselves. The broadside is not dated but the paper is watermarked 1808. The Chinese sensitive leaves were small pieces of thin material that when placed into someone's hand would react by curling in a way that would reveal the constitution of the person. It is unlikely that the declared inventor, Jan Pertista ever existed. More likely this is an invention of England or France, with some enterprising salesman looking to take advantage of novelty in his marketing. A variety of different "sensitive leaf" ads are extant, some spelling the inventor's name as Chasereto, some attributing the invention to Yang-HOU, of Kiangnen, China. Of this exact copy we could find no others recorded.

SEETZEN, Ulrich Jasper.
SEETZEN, Ulrich Jasper. A Brief Account of the Countries adjoining the Lake of Tiberias, the Jordan, and the Dead Sea ... Published for the Palestine Associaton of London. Bath, printed and sold by Meyler and Son ... and in London by Hatchard, 1810.4to. Modern calf-backed marbled boards, red morocco lettering-piece; pp. 47, 5 (notes), engraved map as frontispiece (lightly cropped, as usual); title-page with repair to torn corner and a few minor flaws, occasional light spotting; a good copy of a great rarity.First edition of this travel account by an unsung hero of early travel on the Arabian peninsula. Ulrich Jasper Seetzen (1767-1811) was a German physician, scientist, orientalist and traveler, who left Germany in 1802. He travelled overland to Istanbul, through Anatolia to the Levant where he studied Arabic. During the first leg of the journey described in this volume Seetzen was accompanied by an Armenian named Ibrahim, who was formerly in the service of Jezzar, Pasha of Akko. They began their journey from Damascus on 12 December 1805 to Lahja, Gerat and Hauran, eventually returning to Damascus. Seetzen's second journey was undertaken alone, disguised as an Arab beggar. He investigated the surroundings of the Dead Sea, where Seetzen commenced another journey to Rasheia, Baniass, Jerrash, Karrak and other places en route. Seetzen was the first European to examine the lake and the deepest depression on Earth. Later he went to Mecca, where he made drawings of the Holy places, converted to Islam and, in the Hadhramaut, he decided to travel to Muscat, when he was poisoned by … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Rose, Dr. Robert Hutchinson, Joseph Dennie, editor]
Philadelphia: printed for C. & A. Conrad by Smith & Maxwell, 1810. First edition. Engraved endpiece. [iii-]viii, [9-]184 pp. First edition of a scarce work, edited by "the father of American Belles-Lettres" (T. Dwight). This is an early issue: a later issue seems to have been published in about 1819, which included an engraved additional title and two plates. More correctly, this work marks the first appearance in book form of many of the pieces, for as Joseph Dennie notes in the 'Preface', "most of the following 'Sketches' have already appeared in The Port Folio": which was arguably the first important political and literary journal in the United States which Dennie edited. Dennie "was an American author and journalist who was one of the foremost men of letters of the Federalist Era." A Federalist, Dennie is best remembered for his series of essays entitled The Lay Preacher and as the founding editor of the afore-mentioned Port Folio, a journal with classical republican values. Port Folio was the most highly regarded and successful literary publication of its time, and the first important political and literary journal in the United States. Timothy Dwight IV referred to Dennie as "the Addison of America" and "the father of American Belles-Lettres." Rose (1776-1842) is an interesting figure. He was the proprietor and first major developer of Silver Lake Township, Pa. (he owned 140,000 acres at one point); he is also credited for much of the development of Susquehanna County, Pa., and was active in attempts to help Irish immigrant families and as an abolitionist.
