- Folio (28 x 19.6 cm.), disbound. A few words underlined in red pencil. First and last leaves almost loose. Overall in very good condition. (4 ll.). *** FIRST EDITION? Dated 14 February 1810, this decree announces that the Cortes Extraordinarias will meet beginning March 1, 1810, and that the Americans are to send deputies to it. A document of great importance for Latin American independence: already facing a crisis of political legitimacy due to the forced abdication of Ferdinand VII in 1808, the American viceregal governments now had to contend with a political resurgence among the creole population. The liberal decrees, the Constitution of 1812 and the encouragement given to the American deputies, not to mention the very existence of the Cortes, helped promote Latin American independence movements.*** Medina, @Biblioteca hispano-americana, Adiciones 8037.         Inventario e Stima della Libreria Riccardi. Manoscritti e Edizioni del Secolo XV

1 p.l., 225, [3] (blank), xviii, [1] pp. Large 4to, early 20th-cent. half-calf & marbled boards, spine gilt, red leather lettering piece on spine, entirely uncut. Florence: 1810. The collections of early books, manuscripts, and works of art in the Biblioteca Riccardiana of Florence were begun in the 16th century by Riccardo Romolo Riccardi. In the last decades of the 17th century it was significantly enlarged by Francesco Riccardi, partially as a result of the dowry of his wife, Cassandra Capponi. Her father Vincenzio, an erudite and famous man of letters and science closely connected with the circle of Galileo, had left his daughter part of his extensive library of scientific and philosophical texts. The collections were housed in the magnificent palazzo in Via Larga (today Via Cavour), which was purchased from the Medicis in 1659, and is today known as the Palazzo Medici Riccardi. The Riccardi family was unusual in that they allowed the public to use the library throughout most of the 18th century. In the latter part of the 18th century the family's fortunes began their decline and the Riccardis were forced to consider selling the collections. The present catalogue was prepared as an inventory in preparation for the sale by auction starting in July 1811. We learn from the "Manifeste" at the beginning of the catalogue the collections had been appraised and catalogues were soon to be available throughout Europe (Renouard in Paris, Pasquali in Venice, Orell and Dueli in Zurich, Pachoud in Geneva, etc.). After considerable negotiations, the City Council of Florence purchased the collections and palace in 1813. This inventory offers a detailed view of the 3590 early manuscripts, 617 incunabula, 18,257 other printed books, and the family's large and important collections of medals, bronzes, engraved gems, cameos, porcelains, and crystals. The library was appraised at 156,151 lire Toscane. Fine copy. ? Ottino-Fumagalli 2938.

Autograph letter signed "Spontini" to [Johann Valentin] Teichmann

Spontini "dominated serious grand opera of the early 19th century in Paris and later in Berlin... Although Fernand Cortez was taken out of the repertory in 1810, that year proved to be the peak of Spontini's career. In February he was appointed directeur de la musique de l'opéra buffa at the Théâtre de l'Impératrice and was able to put his ideas for repertory - concentrating on performances of Cimarosa and Mozart - into practice at the Théâtre Italien. In July he was awarded a newly created prize for the best opera of the decade, for La vestale, and in the same month he married Marie-Cathérine-Céleste Erard, daughter of the pianoforte maker and publisher Jean-Baptiste Erard. After Napoleon's fall from power Spontini withdrew from the public eye for some time, but he greeted the return of the Bourbon kings in August 1814 with Pélage and he was restored for a time to the position at the Théâtre Italien which he had given up in 1812." Anselm Gerhard in Grove Music Online. His last opera, Agnes von Hohenstaufen, was first performed at the Königliches Opernhaus in Berlin on June 12, 1829. After extensive revisions, a second version was performed on December 6, 1837; the present letter most probably refers to a production of the second version of the work. Spontini was the Generalmusikdirektor and leading musician at the court of King Friedrich Wilhelm III in Berlin at this time, where he was welcomed by such prominent intellectuals as E.T.A. Hoffmann. A devotee of the theater, Johann Valentin Teichmann (1791-1860) was in close contact with prominent artists, musicians, and dramatic poets in Berlin. His literary output included a history of the Royal Theatre in Berlin from 1740 to 1840 and a collected edition of letters from writers, such as Goethe and Schiller, who corresponded with the Royal Theatre.. 1 page. Octavo. Dated [Berlin,] December [?]28, 1834. In French (with translation). Spontini asks Teichmann to thank those involved in a production of his opera, Agnes, for which he would also like seats for that evening's performance. "I beg Councillor Teichmann to convey my regards to the choir members, extra choir members, the two choir directors and Mrs. Hochstetter, as well as to several assistants who led the rehearsals of Agnes with zeal and talent, to which Mr. Henning, the music director, contributed the most of all." Slightly worn, browned, foxed and stained; creased at folds and somewhat overall; several edge tears; some show-through; remnants of former mount to verso.

"VALOR ECCLESIASTICUS: temp. Henr. VIII. auctoritate regia institutus." Volume 1[only, of 6) with three hand coloured folding maps by Arrowsmith) - Printed by George Eyre and Andrew Strahan, by command of His Majesty King George III in Pursuance of an Address of the House of Commons of Great Britain.

"VALOR ECCLESIASTICUS":A survey of the finances of the church in England, Wales and English controlled parts of Ireland made in 1535 on the orders of Henry VIII. In 1534 King Henry broke with the Pope and by the Act of Supremacy made himself the supreme head of the church in his lands. One of his first actions in his new role was to impose taxes on the clergy. Taxes traditionally paid by clerics to the Pope were now to be given to him, and Henry also decided in late 1534 to create a new annual income tax of 10% on the income from all church lands and offices. To properly assess the new tax a survey of all church property and revenues had to be made. In January 1535 the government appointed commissions throughout the country to conduct the survey. All clergymen, parish priests, heads of monasteries, colleges, hospitals and other institutions under church auspices were commanded to give sworn testimony before their local commissioners as to their income, the lands their establishments owned and the revenues they received from all other sources. The commissioners were to examine documents and account books and from these and the testimony provide a full financial statement for every religious institution. The work of collecting the information was ordered to be completed by 30 May 1535 and the results sent in to the Exchequer in London. The commissioners were unpaid and untrained, mostly local gentry, mayors, magistrates, bishops and sheriffs but they approached the vast task with speed and, by the summer of 1535, the government had in its hands a detailed accounting of the property and wealth of the church. A slip is bound-in explaining that the 'General Introduction & General Map' will be delivered with the 'last volume' (but they are not present). Latin Text. In 1800 an Address of the House of Commons requested that the "preservation, arrangement & more convenient use of Public Records" be facilitated by the reprinting of such records resulting in the publication in 1810 by order of King George III of this volume.

It seems the Taylors were inspired by The World Turned Upside Down published by Edward Riley in the second half of the 18th century. Moon, Tabart, No.171: "This is an excellent production. The verses are neat, pointed and ... easily to be understood by children.....The plates (by Isaac Taylor, jun.?) are among the more proficient illustrations in children's books of the period and amusingly depict 'The horse turned driver', 'The ass turned miller', etc."; Stewart, The Taylors of Ongar, Volume I, page 135, A9a; Gumuchian, 1157: "24 remarkable engravings, inspired by the French 18th cent. popular prints of Le Monde Renverse"; Oppenheimer Part VI, 2450.         UNCLE'S PRESENT

BEWICK. EARLY AMERICAN. (BATTLEDORE) THE UNCLE'S PRESENT, A NEW BATTLEDOOR. Philadelphia: Jacob Johnson (147 Market St.) (on flap), Philadelphia: Sold by Benjamin Warner (on rear cover), no date circa 1810. 3 3/4 x 6 1/2", brown pictorial wrappers, some darkening of covers else near fine. The front and back covers have woodcuts attributed to W. Mason on the front and A. Anderson on rear. The cover heeds "Read and be Wise" and the flap adds "Come, read and learn." The inside is composed entirely of an alphabet. Unlike most battledores, this has an extra leaf inside allowing for one large illustration for each letter of the ABC. The woodcuts are particularly charming depicting various Cries and the text of the cries use words for the particular letter they represent. Rosenbach says "The Cries illustrating the alphabet are a very pretty set, and are probably an early set of Newcastle or York Cries by BEWICK.... The letters J and U are omitted in order to have 24 letters for 24 compartments." Battledores were learning vehicles that served double duty. Inside the classromm they were used for learning the ABC's but at recess they could be used to play a pre-baseball type game of battledore and shuttlecock. This is one of the best examples of a battledore. Welch 1363. Rosenbach 428 (also pictured).

Sammlung von teils eigenh. Notenhandschriften eigener und fremder Werke. Verschiedene Orte, ca. 1810-1930.

1810. Zusammen 433 SS. eigene Werke bzw. Werkfragmente, Entwürfe u. dgl. und 1329 SS. Werke bzw. Werkfragmente, Entwürfe u. a. anderer Komponisten in Abschriften.

N.p.: Preface dated "1810." First edition of this finely illustrated work by Kita Busei (1776-1856), a student of Tani Buncho. The images of the 36 poets, each of which occupies two-thirds of a page, are finely printed in color using a series of woodblocks. The backgrounds are delicately tinted and the images of each poet are richly color-printed, employing different colors in a series of printing runs.         The uncle's present, a new battledoor.

Philadelphia: Jacob Johnson 12mo (16.3 cm, 6.4"). [4] ff. (see below).. n.d. [ca. 1810] Dr. R explains the unusual way in which the pages of this publication were put together: There are "[f]our leaves, the first and last pasted down to the covers, the 2 inner ones pasted together making 4 pages in all." These four pages contain 24 letters of the alphabet, each with a "cry" illustrating it, 6 compartments to a page. Dr. R supposed the cries to be those of Newcastle or York, but Welch dissents and says they are London cries. In addition to the interior four pages, the covers are integral to the educational purpose of the publication: The front cover has a heading "Read, and be wise" and below is the alphabet in majuscules, then a center cut of sheep below a tree with children in the distance, with the numerals one to zero below the cut. Dr. R attributes this cut to A. Anderson. The rear cover has the same heading and below is the alphabet in minuscules, then a cut of horses and handlers and a building, with the alphabet in italic minuscules below, and then the numerals again. The flap with "Come, read and learn" on the outside and the title and publication data on the inside is present and integral. It is not uncommon for this fragile flap to have been lost. Publisher's olive printed paper?covered wrappers. Minor chipping to one top margin of rear cover; adhesion of olive paper from a different copy to the underside of the flap! A very few light stains. A very nice copy of this fragile item.

Abraham Rees (1743-1825) was a British clergyman best known for this, his outstanding encyclopedic work, The Cyclopaedia. (Initially published 1802-1820 in parts in Great Britain.) Rees' work not only featured theological and humanistic issues, but also extensive articles on mathematics and natural sciences. The Cyclopaedia, "is the richest work for technology of the period, with detailed text and handsome, carefully prepared plates." Ferguson, Eugene. "Contributions to Bibliography in the History of Technology (part II)". Technology and Culture 3.2 (1962): 169 p. "Rees was convinced that the important progress made during the last decades of the eighteenth century, especially in the fields of history, geography, geology, natural history, and the physical sciences senu lato, required a new type of encyclopedia with the accent on these fields as well as the still relatively undeveloped domains of biography and the history of sciences. The Cyclopaedia thus became one of the first works of its kind to be compiled with the help of 'persons eminently distinguished in these branches of science to which they had devoted their talents.'"         Autograph letter signed "G. Spontini Conte di Sant' Andrea" to Benigni Ghisilieri

After Napoleon's fall from power Spontini withdrew from the public eye for some time, but he greeted the return of the Bourbon kings in August 1814 with Pélage and he was restored for a time to the position at the Théâtre Italien which he had given up in 1812." Anselm Gerhard in Grove Music Online.. 1 page of a bifolium. Quarto (ca. 260 x 217 mm). Dated Paris, June 20, 1845. In ink on dark ivory paper with integral address panel and remnants of original seal to verso of second folio. In Italian (with translation). Spontini asks Ghisilieri to convey his thanks to a certain Consul Petrini. He mentions Giovanni Paggi, a well-known Italian oboist, composer, tenor, and mutual acquaintance. "... The most accomplished Signor Paggi will tell you that he has listened to me saying constantly that I am still awaiting answers from Rome, Iesi, and Maiolati! Without this, I would not know that I am boring my friends with vague, useless and fruitless matters! I have repeatedly asked him, and would indeed ask you also, to convey my infinite thanks to the most kind Consul Petrini for the admirable offer he saw fit to make to me, of providing a friendly retreat and hospitable asylum for the many centenary festivities. I would be too afraid to accept, or be judged perhaps indiscreet or ungrateful. I am not in a position to make up my mind or to take such a decision, which no one should expect in such a state of uncertainty... " Slightly worn and soiled; creased at folds; edges trimmed with short tears and some fraying, slightly affecting several letters; minor loss to margins of second folio, corresponding to seal, not affecting text or address panel. Together with: An intriguing autograph letter signed "Ch. de Lonchamps" to Spontini. 2 pp. of a bifolium, ca. 249 x 190 mm. Dated Naples, June 7, 1810. In ink on ivory paper with integral address panel with remnants of original seal, and "Il Soprintendente Generale de' Teatri, e Spettacoli Ciambellano di S. M." printed at head. In Italian (with translation). Lonchamps attempts to lure Spontini back to his native Italy with a commission for a grand opera and an opera buffa, to be performed at the Royal Theatre of S. Carlo in Naples. He reminds Spontini that, although he may enjoy unprecedented advantages in Paris, it is only in his own country that he may see his friends and family - as well as fulfill the desire of the Queen of Naples to have him in her city. "Having received your letter, my dear Spontini, I have been reflecting on the most suitable method of repaying you for your services. In consequence, I have summoned the impresario for the Royal Theatres, for whom you might like to set some drama to music, as much for honor as for profit. In doing so, knowing the benefit that could accrue from the graciousness of your action, I have engaged him to propose to you the composition of a major serious drama for the Royal Theatre of S. Carlo, for which you will be offered, in reward, the same as has been offered in the past to the most famous composers. Following the success of this composition (of which there can be no doubt), the above-mentioned impresario will propose an opera buffa, which will also be rewarded as above. This is what I have been able to obtain for the moment. I am sure that the impresarios of the Fiorentini and Nuovo theatres will not miss the opportunity to profit from your coming to Naples, by offering in their turn projects for their theatres, which are also enjoying fame at this time... " Creased at folds and corners; occasional small ink stains and smudging, just affecting final pen stroke of greeting; minor worming to upper inner margin, affecting one letter.
