Complete autograph manuscript of 12 pages in-8 6 sheets under difficult to decipher, perhaps: "Sade or the kingdoms of The One" and be published under the title "Some remarks on Sade" in Review No. 3-4 of 7 August 1946.Manuscript writing very dense, with many erasures, corrections and additions."It's the thought of Sade pushing that Blanchot to completion, and it is also that of Blanchot that accomplishes that of Sade." (Georges Bataille)Writing and friendship of Battle are probably not unrelated to the importance Blanchot give his life to this father figure of his philosophical reflection. These few remarks on Sade, however, are the first study that Blanchot dedicated to this writer that he had hitherto almost never mentioned. In this first impartial and sometimes severe analysis, Blanchot points out the weaknesses of literary posture Sade and relative immorality in a post-revolutionary society steeped in ideological contradictions. However, under the artifice of extreme expression, Blanchot reveals a far more disconcerting and subversive philosophy that these "great extravagance."With remarkable acuity, he portrays a unique spirit, all espousing high ideals of his time, but placing them in the filter of his nihilistic singularity: "Freedom, in his view, is that the prohibition for anyone to be anything other than what he wants, is to say nothing. "The pen of Blanchot, Sadism is no longer enjoyment of violence against others, but expression of "the infinite loneliness of the individual" in a world "where beings reports, the general forms of life and to the language out is already used in the universal destruction. "; "And now all the particular cruelties are no longer intended (...) to bring to the One pleasant evidence of its existence in the middle of nothing. "If, as Bataille points out, a more innovative look, reading Sade Blanchot reveals a community of thought is probably through the conclusion of this first major study that Blanchot solitary demonstrates most clearly his Sade attachment to the One:"And now we come to think if the circumstances were de Sade a man never reduced to the misery of an eternal prison, itself has succeeded in making his prison image loneliness of universe where his reign only glory forever almighty. The prison did not mind, it is his work, it is the measure of the world on which he has more rights than God himself, because it not only reigns supreme, but he banished and excluded all creatures. Such is the advantage of the Destroyer of the Creator. This atheist is more God than God. Does also called divine. " S.n. s.l. [1810-1812] in-8 (18,5x23,5cm) (1f.) 2 f. découpés (78f.) broché

        Lied aus der Ferne

1810. First Edition . BEETHOVEN, Ludwig van. Lied aus der Ferne, mit Begleitung des Piano Forte [WoO 137]. Leipzig: Breitkopf & Härtel, [1810]. Oblong quarto, modern full brown morocco. $3500.First edition of BeethovenÂ’s setting of ReissigÂ’s poem arranged for piano and voice. Fully engraved.Beethoven often turned to poetry for inspiration, most notably Goethe, whom he admired above all writers then living; but he found that he could more freely compose musical settings for the works of lesser poets, among them Christian Ludwig Reissig (1783-1847). The five songs composed to ReissigÂ’s words later “gave rise to much annoyance” when the poet claimed ownership of BeethovenÂ’s compositions (Thayer, 476). Engraved title page and music text.         An Account of Expeditions to the Sources of the Mississippi, and through the... interior parts of New Spain

[8]+106+[10]+107-278+[4]+66+53+87 pages with frontispiece and tables (lacks the 5 maps and 2 charts) . Octavo (8 3/4" x 5 1/2") bound in full leather with red label with gilt lettering to spine. (Howes: P372) First edition.Zebulon Montgomery Pike,1779-1813, American explorer, an army officer, born Lamberton (now part of Trenton), N.J. He joined the army (c.1793) and was commissioned second lieutenant in 1799. In 1805 he led an exploring party to search for the source of the Mississippi River; although he mistakenly identified Red Cedar Lake (now Cass Lake) in Minnesota as the source, he was not far wrong. After his return he was sent on an expedition (1806-7) to explore the headwaters of the Arkansas and Red rivers and to reconnoiter Spanish settlements in New Mexico. Pike and his men went up the Arkansas River to the site of Pueblo, Colorado and explored much of the country, sighting the peak that is named after him, Pikes Peak. When he and a small party went to the Rio Grande, they were taken into custody by the Spanish who brought them to Santa Fe and then to Chihuahua and finally released them at the border of the Louisiana Territory. Upon his return, Pike was accused of complicity in the plot of Aaron Burr and James Wilkinson to detach Western territory from the United States, but he was exonerated by the Secretary of War. Pike was promoted to the rank of brigadier general during the War of 1812. He was killed while commanding his troops during the successful assault on York (now Toronto).Condition:Frontispiece and title edges repaired. Lacks other plates and maps, else a very good copy.

The East India vade-mecum; or, complete guide to gentlemen intended for the civil, military, or naval service of the Hon East India Company

London: printed for Black, Parry, and Kingsbury, booksellers to the Honourable East India Company, 7, Leadenhall-Street. 1810. Two vols., 8vo., xvi + 520 and (iii) - vii + (1) + 506 + (6)pp., including the half-title in vol.I (lacking in vol.II) and the final advertisement leaves in vol.II, short closed tear in leaf Y1 (pp.321-2) of first vol. but with no loss, bound in uniform contemporary half sheep over marbled boards, flat spines with labels, the labels rather rubbed and faded, the slightest wear to extremities but overall very good copies each with the 19th century armorial bookplate of Robert Smith (Smyth)* of Gaybrook, County Westmeath.> First edition. Described sometimes as the first travel guide to India, this is actually an encyclopaedic reference work on every imaginable subject that the new East India Company staff members - civil or military - would wish to know. Subjects, each treated expertly and in some depth, are wide-ranging, covering matters social, economic, religious, mercantile, legal, agricultural and military. 'In the volumes now offered to the public,' the author writes, 'it has been my zealous endeavour to supply those minutiae and details, which have not, in any distinct manner, been heretofore tendered to its consideration. A residence of more than twenty years in Bengal, during which period I had every opportunity of visiting the several districts under that presidency, has enabled me to afford considerable insight into a variety of topics, which, whether to the statesman, the merchant, the military, or the civil character, should prove highly important, and guide, not only to a just conception of the characters of the natives, and of the European society, in India, but to the removal of that host of doubts, prejudices, and national opinions, which it suffered to prevail, must occasion every object to be seen through a false medium.' [Preface]. Williamson is, perhaps, best known for his 1807 Oriental field sports> with its superb hand-coloured aquatint plates. * Lieutenant-Colonel Robert Smyth (1812-1886) was an officer in the Bengal Artillery.

With the bookplate of the Victorian novelist William Hale White. Tinker 689 (noting Wordsworth references); Wise, Coleridge 20. Provenance: William Hale White (bookplate)

TRAVELS OF MIRZA ABU TALEB KHAN, in Asia, Africa, and Europe, during the years 1799, 1800, 1801, 1802, and 1803. Written by himself, in the Persian language. Translated by Charles Stewart.

London, printed by R. Watts, Broxbourn, Herts: and sold by Longman, Hurst, Rees and Orme, London, 1810.. FIRST EDITION 1810, translated by Charles Stewart, 2 volumes, complete set. 8vo, approximately 230 x 140 mm, 9 x 5½ inches, engraved portrait frontispiece of the author by W. Bond after J. Northcote, R.A., pages: (2), viii, (16), 320; (2), 418, (2) - adverts, complete with half-titles, bound in modern morocco, gilt lettering and decoration to spines, cloth boards with dividing gilt decoration, new endpapers. Portrait lightly foxed in margins, offset onto title page, light brown spotting and light staining to margins throughout, very occasionally affecting text, but in no way obscuring it, 2 lower corners torn off, no loss of text, small closed tear to 3 margins, 2 leaves in Volume II chipped and worn at fore-edges, not affecting text. A good copy. Abu Taleb Khan (1752-1806) was born in Lucknow after his father, a Turk born in Isfahan, had fled the tyranny of Nadir Shah of Persia and taken refuge in India. After problems with his employment in Calcutta, Abu Taleb is encouraged by an English friend to accompany him on a trip to England. This he does setting off in 1799, stopping off at the Cape of Good Hope on the way and landing first at Cork and taking lodgings in Dublin. Next he settles in London and in 12 chapters describes at length the city, England, the English and their character, manners and customs, government, system of justice, recreations, entertainments, finances (deploring the National Debt), science and the arts, he also relates the rise of Napoleon and Nelson' s successes. He has many aristocratic friends who offer him hospitality as a "Persian Prince", he attends the Lord Mayor's Feast, and is presented at court to George III and Queen Charlotte. In 1803 Abu Taleb returns to India spending some time in Paris and Lyon, describing both and disparaging French cuisine. He goes by ship from Marseilles to Genoa and then to Livorno where he narrowly escapes assassination. Finally he reaches Turkey via Malta, and is received graciously by the British Ambassador in Constantinople. The last 6 chapters recount his overland journey from Turkey, through Iraq visiting many towns including Baghdad and making pilgrimages to the Shia shrines at Kerbela and Nejif. Finally he takes a ship from Basra down the Persian Gulf to Bombay where he is received by the Governor who arranges his passage to Bengal. On this prolonged journey home he still describes in some detail the manners and customs of people he meets, the towns and cities he visits, his voyages by river and sea, often enlivened by anecdotes or brief histories such as that of the Wahhabis. Cox, Travel, Volume III, page 108: "He was amazed and delighted with Ireland, and no less pleased with the 10,000 oriental MSS at the Bodleian. The curiosities at the British Museum received careful attention as well. He notes with disapproval the fact that in London prostitutes lived on streets with such virtuous names as Providence Street, Modest Court... He greatly admired England's progress in manufactures."         Traité de Topographie, d'arpentage et de nivellement ... [and] Supplément au second livre du Traité de Topographie...

Paris: Chez Courcier, 1807-, 1810. Quarto, two works bound in one, in total seven folding plates and one folding table, some pages age-toned but overall very good, neatly bound in modern quarter calf, Ingleton bookplate and manuscript note. A fine volume containing rare first editions of two French works of surveying, said on good authority to be from Phillip Parker King's library. Present here are both Puissant's original Traité of 1807, and the rarer supplement from 1810.Louis Puissant (1768-1843), was born in the Champagne region of France, and learnt geometry as part of his early training as a land-surveyor. First employed in the French war department in 1790, his ability meant that he worked in difficult regions like the Pyrenees and the island of Elba. Early in his career he wrote and published a book on the subject of the shape of the earth, and from 1809 directed the École de Géographes in Paris. He is best remembered for his invention of a new map projection of France, which was produced with considerable detail, using spherical trigonometry, truncated power series and differential geometry. The belief that this is Phillip Parker's King's copy is derived from a note in the hand of the important Australiana collector, Geoffrey C. Ingleton explaining how he bought this work "from a descendant of Phillip Parker King, who owned this book." Given King's renown as a naval officer and hydrographer, his ownership of Puissant's significant study is eminently possible, and certainly the date of its publication tailors neatly with the details of his early career. King, family tradition attests, had been encouraged to pursue a career in hydrography by Matthew Flinders. King had first met Flinders as a child, but the two were reaquainted in 1810, shortly after Flinders return from imprisonment under the French. In turn, in 1811 Flinders introduced him to Sir Joseph Banks. Of course, King's own survey of parts of the Australian coast began in 1817.Ingleton's note also comments that he had the book rebound in 1980. Nonetheless, no copy of either of these important works is recorded on the Libraries Australia Gateway. A second enlarged edition was produced in 1820.
