The History of Printing in America (2 Volumes)

Worcester, Massachusetts: The Press of Isaiah Thomas, Jun, 1810. First Edition. Full-Leather. This two-volume set is important and unique for a number of reasons: 1) it is a first edition of an historically significant book 2) it is inscribed by Isaiah Thomas as follows, "Hon. David Ramsay, From his humble Servant, The Author." 3) presumably this was David Ramsay, M.D., field surgeon during the Revolutionary war; member of the Sourth Carolina legislature 1776-'83; delegate to the Continental Congress 1782-86; member and President of the South Carolina senate; and noted author and biographer. 4) in 1952 this set was placed in a handsome, custom-made, leather-bound box. It was designed to resemble two leather-bound volumes with five raised bands on their spines and blind-stamped, bright gilt lettering. Each volume had a presentation page inserted which reads, "Presented by his Associates to Rae M. Spencer upon his Fiftieth Anniversary with The Davis Press, Inc. Worcester, Massachusetts 1902-1952" (Rae Spencer was President of The Davis Press, Inc. He eventually retired in 1960 after 58 years.) Subtitle, "With a Biography of Printers, and an Account of Newspapers. To Which is Prefixed a Concise View of the Discovery and Progress of the Art in Other Parts of the World. In Two Volumes." Vol. I, 487 pp.; Vol. II, 576 pp. Both volumes are full calf. Spines have a pasted-on, red leather title block and a pasted-on green leather volume number block. These have blind-stamped, fairly bright (but worn) gilt lettering and rules. Covers and spines are aged, stained and worn. Front cover of Vol. I is detached, but present. Upper hinge of Vol. I's rear cover and upper hinge of Vol. II's front cover been glued. Interiors are aged. Ephemera: tipped-in and/or pasted-down articles pertinent to the history of these unique volumes. Good.

WITH A LOVELY CONTEMPORARY FORE-EDGE PAINTING showing St. Paul’s Cathedral and London Bridge from beyond the River Thames. Agry is recorded to have worked in Paris from at least 1870 through 1880. It is not known if he lived later in America. Augustine Healy is not the famous Bishop Healy from Portland, Maine. However, there was a man named Augustine Healy living in the New York or Connecticut area during the period ca.1926-1937. [See the New York Times Personal Names Index]. Col. Gribbel also had a copy of Hurdis’s The Village Curate, 1810, with the same fore-edge painting (sold Parke-Bernet Dec. 8/9, 1947 and listed in C J Weber’s A Thousand and One Fore-edge Paintings, 1949, p. 152). However this is not Col. Gribbel’s copy, as it is bound differently and has a different bookplate. See: Fincham, Artists and Engravers of Britain and American bookplates.

        MINSTRELSY OF THE SCOTTISH BORDER

Edinburgh: Printed by J. Ballantyne and Co, 1810. Fourth Edition, Second (Large Paper) Impression. 241 x 146 mm (9 1/2 x 5 3/4"). Three volumes. Pleasing contemporary black straight-grain morocco, covers with gilt floral frame enclosing central panel with blindstamped thistle cornerpieces, raised bands, spines heavily gilt in compartments with much swirling foliage, gilt turn-ins, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. Volume I WITH AN ATTRACTIVE FORE-EDGE PAINTING OF THE MERCAT CROSS IN MELROSE, ROXBURGHSHIRE. Front pastedown of volumes II and III with engraved bookplate of W. J. Denison (see below); volume I with evidence of bookplate removal; copy of an engraving of Boston Church, Lancashire, laid in at rear of volume II. Todd & Bowden 8Ag. Joints and extremities somewhat rubbed, boards a bit marked and abraded, minor foxing here and there in the text, nine gatherings with faint overall browning due to poor quality of paper, but still an excellent set, the leaves clean, the once quite dazzling bindings still sound and pleasing, and the fore-edge painting well preserved. Apart from the fore-edge painting here, this is an important work in the Scott canon, offered in quite pretty decorative contemporary bindings that once belonged to a person of very great wealth and influence. Scott collected traditional ballads on his trips to the Borders region, and in 1796 began compiling this work, in an effort to preserve folklore of his native land that might otherwise be lost. Our fourth edition contains 27 historical ballads, 52 romantic ballads, and 20 imitations written by Scott and his friends. According to Day, "The whole bent of Scott's later imaginative writings, both in verse and prose, was governed by this ballad spirit. Probably this work was Scott's greatest contribution to poetry." The handsome fore-edge painting depicts in a realistic style the mercat cross marking the central marketplace in Melrose, a town in the Scottish Borders near Scott's home at Abbotsford. A 12th century law required that all goods for sale be presented at a town's mercat (market) cross, a tall column usually topped with a small statue. Such is the cross at the center of our painting, which is rendered in subdued grays and browns. Two streets lined with thatched houses and shops wend away from the central marketplace, and a large gray-green mountain looms in the background. A small Scottish terrier trots across the center of the scene; a couple of merchants chat beside the cross; a woman and small boy head up one of the streets, while an old man with a cane walks up the other. It is a tranquil scene, but enlivened by the townsfolk and the cheerful little Scottie. It is unusual for only one volume in a set to be so decorated; something must have interrupted the artist before he could complete the commission. Perhaps the print laid in volume II was intended to be an inspiration for its fore-edge decoration. Former owner W. J. Denison (1770-1849) was a banker and politician who was one of the richest men in Britain; he left an estate valued at £2.3 million. A staunch whig member of parliament for 38 years, he was a strong advocate for parliamentary reform and was one of the founders of the Reform Club. He acquired vast estates in Yorkshire and Surrey, but declined a peerage when it was offered in 1820.

        CORNELIA AND ALCESTIS: TWO OPERAS

Printed for T. Payne London: Printed for T. Payne, 1810. FIRST EDITION. Early 19th Century Libretti Based on Greek Tragedies,The Artful Painted Scene by the Dover Painter, ca. 1930 194 x 124 mm (7 5/8 x 4 7/8"). 2 p.l., lxxxvii, [i], 188 pp. Harmless contemporary purple straight-grain morocco, covers with gilt fillet border, raised bands flanked by plain gilt rules, gilt titling, all edges gilt. WITH AN EXCELLENT LATER FORE-EDGE PAINTING OF THE ACROPOLIS.Joints somewhat rubbed and flaked, boards a little stained and rather faded, rear board with two small abraded patches, otherwise an excellent copy, clean and fresh internally, in a solid, inoffensive binding, and with a vividly colored painting in fine condition. These two librettos are based on Euripides' tragedies "Medea" and "Alcestis." "Cornelia" transports the story of Medea's revenge on her faithless husband to Roman Britain, while Alcestis' story of self-sacrifice and redemption retains its original setting and cast of characters. The fore-edge painting salutes the classical origins of the operas with a striking depiction of the Acropolis, rising majestically on its hill, surrounded by open countryside with blue mountains in the distance. The foreground is populated by two tourists, sitting on a rock admiring the view, and four brightly dressed Greek peasants. Our view shows a sophisticated sense of design as well as a delicacy of painterly strokes, and the whole scene looks very convincing. The intricate gradations in the shading, seen especially in the fields and sky, are remarkable, and the highly skilled use of shadows establishes a strong sense of three-dimensionality. There is a great deal to see in terms of activity, landscape, and architecture, and all of it is painted in careful, convincing detail. It is easy to recognize the work of the so-called "Dover Painter," as it shows his distinctive style of applying small dabs of paint; this method is especially effective in producing convincing texture for skies, trees, shrubs, and grass. "Dover Painter" is the name given by Jeff Weber to the person who painted in the 1920s and '30s, probably for the famous London bookseller Marks & Company. British writer James Mason (1778/9-1827) wrote political pamphlets advocating parliamentary reform and Catholic emancipation, as well as several plays, an epistolary novel, and translations from the classics.

Two Portraits: Boy with Hoop and Young Girl in a Landscape

London ca. 1810 London, ca. 1810]. 10 x 7-1/2 inches (images. Watercolor on card, first drawing signed lower right. Framed and glazed . "Buck, Adam, 1758-1833, portrait painter, elder son of Jonathan Buck, a silversmith of Castle Street, Cork, was born there in 1759. With a younger brother, Frederick, he studied art from an early age, and acquired some repute in youth in his native city as a painter of miniature portraits in water-colour. Coming to London in 1795, he settled at 174 Piccadilly, and soon gained popularity. He not only continued to paint miniature portraits in water-colour, but produced many portraits in oil and crayon of larger size. Between 1795 and 1833, the year of his death, he exhibited at the academy as many as 171 pictures. He also exhibited ten other works at the British Institution and at the Society of British Artists in Suffolk Street. But the pictures that he exhibited represent a small proportion of his labours. Numerous pictures by him were reproduced in coloured engravings, mostly in stipple, and had a wide circulation. Of extant coloured engravings after his pictures the originals of as many as forty or fifty are not known to have been exhibited. Among his sitters were the Earl of Cavan, the Duke of York, Sir Francis Burdett, Major Cartwright, John Cam Hobhouse, and John Burke, author of the Peerage,' and his family. His portraits were carefully finished, although they were stiff in treatment and design. Buck was at the same time busily employed as a teacher of portrait painting, and in 1811 he brought out a volume entitled Paintings on Greek Vases,' which contained a hundred designs, not only drawn, but also engraved by himself. This work, which was planned to continue a similar compilation by Sir William Hamilton, is now extremely scarce. In 1807 he moved from Piccadilly to Frith Street, Soho, and after several changes of residence died at 15 Upper Seymour Street West in 1833. Buck was married and left two sons, Alfred and Sidney; the latter followed his father's profession. A miniature portrait of Buck by himself dated 1804, is in the Sheepshanks gallery of the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. " - DNB

Essays on physiognomy, designed to promote the knowledge and the love of mankind

John MurrayComplete with all blank leaves, half-titles and directions to the binder. With more than 800 engravings, including 173 copper engraved plates and 359 text images by and after Thomas Holloway, Fuseli and others, and by William Blake. Contemporary polished calf, gilt spines, front joints a bit sensitive; interior with minor foxing and off-setting of the plates as usual, but generally a tall, clean and well-margined set in excellent condition. First English edition of Volumes I and II, with the sheets of the third volume reissued by Stockdale. The work is famous for the splendid illustrations and vignettes, including the plates by William Blake. It was a classic pseudo-scientific work, extremely influential in the history of psychiatry, and represents Lavater's account of madmen, demons, and terror. Fuseli's drawings are rendered with distinction in the engravings of Thomas Holloway, and in one instance, Gillray (see Ray, The illustrator and the book in England, 20). Lavater (1741-1801) was a German poet, mystical writer and physiognomist.

First appearance of the first scientific, mathematical work on ROCKET DYNAMICS applying Newton's third law of motion. The offered paper in 3 parts and it is perhaps here, that the first ROCKET EQUATION WAS PUBLISHED. The equation is named after Konstantin Tsiolkovsky who independently derived it and published it in his 1903 work The rocket equation, or ideal rocket equation, is a mathematical equation that relates the delta-v (the maximum change of speed of the rocket if no other external forces act) with the effective exhaust velocity and the initial and final mass of a rocket or other reaction engine."His theories on rockets first appeared in Nicholson's Journal for 1810 and 1811. In 1813 Moore published his collected findings as A Treatise on the Motion of Rockets. The world's first mathematical treatise on rocket dynamics, it had many shortcomings; and Moore admitted that lack of data had hindered his calculations. Nonetheless, he correctly recognized and demonstrated that Newton's third law of motion explained the principle of rocket motion. Moore was the first to consider rocket performance in terms other than range and altitude, and he arrived at calculations for thrust and specific impulse. He also suggested the use of the ballistic pendulum for a more accurate determination of performance."(DSB).Moore's origin and education are unknown. His writings and position as a mathematical instructor at the Royal Military Academy at Woolwich, England, suggest that he was influenced by Charles Hutton, professor of mathematics at the academy from 1773 to 1807. Moore was chosen as an assistant mathe-matical master in October 1806, Hutton being one of the three examiners on the selection board. By August 1807, Moore had advanced to the post of mathematical master. In July 1823 he left the academy because of a staff reduction.(DSB)
