NY: John C. Totten, 1810, 48 pp. . A. J.  AN APOLOGY FOR CAMP-MEETINGS, ILLUSTRATIVE OF THEIR GOOD EFFECTS, AND ANSWERING THE PRINCIPAL OBJECTIONS URGED AGAINST THEM. NY:  John C. Totten, 1810, 48 pp. *** A short treatise that reveals much about the character and beliefs of tent revivals in the early United States.  The author defines a camp-meeting as "a body of christians, christian ministers, preachers and exhorters, assembled in an appointed grove, or some other convenient place, where they form a regular encampment, for the express purpose of spending a few days and nights together, in preaching, exhortation, hearing the word of life, prayer, praise, and other religious exercises . . ."  Anybody could attend, and things could get a bit rowdy and/or bizarre in the view of "normal" folks.  Tailpiece on last page at end of book.  A early, rare American work on religion. ***  This book comes with a clear mylar protective cover. *** Recased in dark brown cloth boards with gilt lettering on the spine.  The covers are clean with very light wear.  The cloth of the front joint is partly rubbed and has two separations of the cloth.  The contents are complete, generally clean with occasional light foxing and a few old stains on fore edges, in a good binding.  The title page upper right corner has chipped off and there are a few worm holes and some stains, with no loss of text.   Owner's name in old script on title page.  The back page is in similar condition without chipping or holes.  It looks like the title page and last page served as covers for awhile until recasing.  Ex-lib. with donation bookplate on front end paper to Long Island Historical Society, stamp and number on title page, not circulated. ***  7.5 " tall by 4.5 "

Struggles and escapes of Captain Wallis and his crew, and their various conflicts with the natives of Otaheite, during a voyage of discovery to the northern hemisphere, in the summer of 1766; including interesting particulars of the inhabitants and country.

London, Thomas Tegg, (1810).Sm.8vo. Modern boards. The English naval officer and circumnavigator (1728-1795) Samuel Wallis 'made the important discovery of Tahiti in 1767 (it had been seen by de Quirós but forgotten: the Spanish acknowledged Wallis' achievement). Tahiti was the largest island seen in the South Seas since Tasman had come across New Zealand and the last Dutch discoverer, Jacob Roggeman, had found the Samoan group in 1722' (Snow & Waine, The people from the horizon, p.43). The discovery of Tahiti and the accounts of the island's people and customs aroused considerable interest. Wallis sailed home via Batavia and the Cape of Good Hope where he spent a month in Table Bay. - Rare popular edition.Huntress 153C; Howgego W7; Mendelssohn II, p.580.

TRAVELS OF MIRZA ABU TALEB KHAN, in Asia, Africa, and Europe, during the years 1799, 1800, 1801, 1802, and 1803. Written by himself, in the Persian language. Translated by Charles Stewart

London, printed by R. Watts, Broxbourn, Herts: and sold by Longman, Hurst, Rees and Orme, London, 1810.. London, printed by R. Watts, Broxbourn, Herts: and sold by Longman, Hurst, Rees and Orme, London, 1810.. FIRST EDITION 1810, translated by Charles Stewart, 2 volumes, complete set. 8vo, approximately 230 x 140 mm, 9 x 5½ inches, engraved portrait frontispiece of the author by W. Bond after J. Northcote, R.A., pages: (2), viii, (16), 320; (2), 418, (2) - adverts, complete with half-titles, bound in the original blue paper boards, spines amateurishly rebacked at some time in buff paper and crudely hand-lettered in ink. Spines darkened and slightly chipped at head and tail, covers lightly spotted, corners slightly worn, armorial bookplate on front pastedown, portrait lightly foxed in margins, offset onto title page, title page in Volume I reinserted, light brown spotting and light staining to margins throughout, very occasionally affecting text, but in no way obscuring it, 2 lower corners torn off, no loss of text, small closed tear to 3 margins, 2 leaves in Volume II chipped and worn at fore-edges, not affecting text. A good working copy. Abu Taleb Khan (1752-1806) was born in Lucknow after his father, a Turk born in Isfahan, had fled the tyranny of Nadir Shah of Persia and taken refuge in India. After problems with his employment in Calcutta, Abu Taleb is encouraged by an English friend to accompany him on a trip to England. This he does setting off in 1799, stopping off at the Cape of Good Hope on the way and landing first at Cork and taking lodgings in Dublin. Next he settles in London and in 12 chapters describes at length the city, England, the English and their character, manners and customs, government, system of justice, recreations, entertainments, finances (deploring the National Debt), science and the arts, he also relates the rise of Napoleon and Nelson' s successes. He has many aristocratic friends who offer him hospitality as a "Persian Prince", he attends the Lord Mayor's Feast, and is presented at court to George III and Queen Charlotte. In 1803 Abu Taleb returns to India spending some time in Paris and Lyon, describing both and disparaging French cuisine. He goes by ship from Marseilles to Genoa and then to Livorno where he narrowly escapes assassination. Finally he reaches Turkey via Malta, and is received graciously by the British Ambassador in Constantinople. The last 6 chapters recount his overland journey from Turkey, through Iraq visiting many towns including Baghdad and making pilgrimages to the Shia shrines at Kerbela and Nejif. Finally he takes a ship from Basra down the Persian Gulf to Bombay where he is received by the Governor who arranges his passage to Bengal. On this prolonged journey home he still describes in some detail the manners and customs of people he meets, the towns and cities he visits, his voyages by river and sea, often enlivened by anecdotes or brief histories such as that of the Wahhabis. Cox, Travel, Volume III, page 108: "He was amazed and delighted with Ireland, and no less pleased with the 10,000 oriental MSS at the Bodleian. The curiosities at the British Museum received careful attention as well. He notes with disapproval the fact that in London prostitutes lived on streets with such virtuous names as Providence Street, Modest Court... He greatly admired England's progress in manufactures."         Sammlung von tls. eigenh. Notenhandschriften eigener und fremder Werke.

Verschiedene Orte, ca. 1810-1930.. Zusammen 433 SS. eigene Werke bzw. Werkfragmente, Entwürfe u. dgl. und 1329 SS. Werke bzw. Werkfragmente, Entwürfe u. a. anderer Komponisten in Abschriften..

London - C. Crook, 1810. London - C. Crook, 1810 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition. A scarce set of thissentimental novelfrom English novelist and dramatist known for his rich earthy humour and satirical prowess, Henry Fielding. First edition thus. Featuring the original six beautifully engraved plates. Fielding began writing Amelia in the autumn of 1749. He turned to his own life for inspiration, and the main character, Amelia, was possibly modelled on Fielding's first wife, Charlotte, who died in November 1744. Likewise, the hero, Captain Booth, was partly modelled after Fielding himself. It contains many allusions to classical literature and focuses on the theme of marriage and feminine intelligence. John Cleland was one of the first reviewers of the novel, and in the December 1751 Monthly Review, claimed the work as the boldest stroke that has yet been attempted in this species of writing and that Fielding takes up his heroine at the very point at which all his predecessors have dropped their capital personages. Complete in three volumes. Condition: Rebacked in calf bindings with gilt lettering to the spines. Externally, light rubbing, and wear to extremities. Internally, all volumes are firmly bound, and bright. Generally clean, with the odd spot and handling mark. Overall: VERY GOOD..

London - T. Bensley, 1810. London - T. Bensley, 1810 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. An early nineteenth-century copy of Virgil's Bucolica, illustrated with plates. Featuring 24 illustrated plates to the rear of 'plants referred to in the Eclogues'. With the armorial bookplate of Lord Battersea to the front pastedown. The Eclogues, also called the Bucolics, is the first of the three major works of the Latin poet Virgil. Taking as his generic model the Greek Bucolica ('on care of cattle', so named from the poetry's rustic subjects) by Theocritus, Virgil created a Roman version partly by offering a dramatic and mythic interpretation of revolutionary change at Rome in the turbulent period between roughly 44 and 38 BC. Virgil introduced political clamor largely absent from Theocritus' poems, called idylls ('little scenes' or 'vignettes'), even though erotic turbulence disturbs the 'idyllic' landscapes of Theocritus. Condition: In a half calf binding with marbled boards. Externally, generally smart, lightly rubbed in places. Some slight marking to the leather. Internally, firmly bound. Some foxing to the endpapers but otherwise very clean throughout. Overall: VERY GOOD..

        The Man of the World

London - Thomas Tegg, 1810. London - Thomas Tegg, 1810 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A nice little copy of Mackenzie's Man of the World. Part of 'Tegg's Miniature Novelists', edited by Miss Burney. With a frontispiece and vignette title. Henry Mackenzie (August, 1745 - 14 January 1831) was a Scottish novelist and miscellaneous writer. He was also known by the sobriquet Addison of the North. Mackenzie had attempted to interest publishers in what would become his first and most famous work, The Man of Feeling, for several years, but they would not even accept it as a gift. Finally, Mackenzie published it anonymously in 1771, and it became instantly successful. The Man of Feeling is a weak creature, dominated by a futile benevolence, who goes up to London and falls into the hands of people who exploit his innocence. In 1773 Mackenzie published a second novel, The Man of the World, the hero of which was as consistently bad as the Man of Feeling. Condition: In a full tree calf binding. Externally rubbed, the front joint starting. Internally, firmly bound. Clean and slightly age-toned. Off-setting to the frontispiece, vignette title and title. Ink signature to front free-endpaper. Overall: GOOD.
