A Sale of English-Beauties in the East Indies

London: circa, 1810. Etching with original handcolouring, 332 x 225 mm. (image size); in fine condition, with title intact, framed. Satire on the marriage market. Superb caricature satirising the shortage of marriageable women in the East Indies. The eighteenth century saw a massive expansion of British trading operations in India with numerous trading posts established along the coasts and large expatriate communities developing in Calcutta, Bombay and Madras. With the escalation in English colonial activity, and the resultant vast increase in the size of the English community, the lack of wives for the traders became an acute problem. Stories abound of widows receiving marriage proposals at their husbands' funerals. The scene here shows the intense interest on the docks following the arrival of a boatload of marriageable women from London. Corpulent colonials and turbaned locals alike tweak and prod the ladies, like so much livestock, whilst a punctilious auctioneer asks for bids. In the background a singularly obese woman is sitting on a set of scales, slightly outweighing a barrel inscribed 'Lack of Rupees'. At the far right some sorrowful women are filing into a warehouse 'for unsaliable (sic) goods from Europe'. This scarce image was executed circa 1810, and is closely based on an earlier James Gillray aquatint cartoon of 1786 which is of even greater rarity. Rowlandson was a close friend of Gillray, and his revival of the image showed that the joke was still current, even if the fashions on display had been updated. The image is a neat counterpoint to Cruikshank's later cartoon on an opposite theme, the shortage of women in Britain now that so many have emigrated (see catalogue number XXX).

        Bourke's Parrot

London: circa, 1810. Original watercolour measuring 150 x 110mm., signed 'Howitt', fine condition, framed. Detailed original watercolour painting of an Australian Bourke's Parrot by Samuel Howitt (1756-1822). Howitt was a celebrated illustrator of animals, sporting scenes and other natural history subjects. Born into comfortable circumstances, Howitt was a keen rider, huntsman and angler who enjoyed the good life on his Essex property until overtaken by financial hardship. Although self-taught, he turned his hand to professional painting and illustration, specialising in sporting scenes. Significantly, Howitt contributed to the flourishing English trade in fine illustrated books - for example, some 38 aquatints after his sketches are included in Edward Orme's Foreign Field Sports (1814). In 1779 he married Elizabeth, sister of the caricaturist Thomas Rowlandson, and the two men became long-term friends. At a time when natural history illustration was becoming an increasingly specialised and scientific occupation, Howitt was a self-professed popular illustrator. In A New Work of Animals (1818) Howitt describes his role somewhat intermediately : 'The artist, studious to attain correctness, hopes he may deserve the approbation of the natural historian, and assist the pencil of the designer who has not had an opportunity to pay the same attention to this branch of the art'. Nonetheless, Howitt was widely regarded as an artist of considerable skill, with regular inclusions at Royal Academy shows and prestigious commissions for his hunting scenes. His services were sought by serious natural history collectors including Walter Fawkes of Farnley Hall and William Bullock. Fawkes was an indefatigable natural history collector, while Bullock sold exotic specimens and owned the famous London museum bearing his name. Both collectors took some pride in their Australian ornithological specimens, and Howitt contributed to Bullock's museum catalogues and Fawkes' Synopsis of Natural History (1823). Howitt enjoyed Bullock's patronage for some time, as evidenced by his entry for the 1814 Royal Academy exhibition catalogue lists his place of residence as "Bullock's Museum, Piccadilly". This original watercolour is a pleasing example of Howitt's ability as a natural history illustrator, with fine detailing of the featherwork. Provenance: the Howitt family, by descent, until dispersal of the collection in very recent times.

The Novels of Daniel De Foe

Edinburgh: James Ballantyne, 1810. 12 volumes, small octavo, with frontispieces and plates; a most attractive set in contemporary half red morocco. A fine set of Defoe's works, including his classics Robinson Crusoe and A New Voyage Round the World, as well as History of the Plague, Colonel Jack, Captain Singleton and Memoirs of a Cavalier. Although in and out of prison for various bankruptcies, and pilloried for some of his more overtly political writings, Defoe survived these various attacks. By the early eighteenth century he was a favourite of the then Whig government. This set includes Defoe's most famous work, Robinson Crusoe. Based at least partially on the story of the Scots sailor Alexander Selkirk, Defoe turns a genuine experience of barest survival into an elaborate tale. Indeed, the story of Crusoe's hard-fought survival and eventual moral redemption is one of the most important and influential works of English literature, spawning an entire genre that has become known as the "Robinsonade

Three volumes, quarto, in excellent condition; discreet library stamps; in original marbled boards with glazed labels; spines rubbed; a couple of old labels; some inoffensive wear to the upper portion of the spine of volume one; in generally excellent original condition, the three volumes in quarter morocco bookform boxes. The very rare St Petersburg printing. The very rare St Petersburg printing of the German-language edition of Krusenstern's own account of his voyage, the first Russian circumnavigation in which he was accompanied by a brilliant corps of officers, including men like Lisiansky, Langsdorff, and Kotzebue. The voyage was of great importance to Pacific history for the Russian attempt to open Japan to commerce, and for the observations made on the Russian-Chinese trade. The Nadeshda and the Neva were together at the Marquesas and Hawaii; there they separated and from this point on Krusenstern's narrative of his part of the voyage concerns the western Pacific. These three volumes, published over a three-year period, represent the complete text of the voyage in its first appearance in German. An accompanying Atlas that appeared two years later is only very rarely found with the text today. The three volumes appeared shortly after each of the three volumes of the Russian-language edition of the text was published over a period of four years (Puteshtestvie vokrug sieta, St Petersburg 1809-1812). An Atlas of plates prepared in St Petersburg to accompany the Russian-language edition was published a year after the final volume of the Russian text in 1813. In 1814 the German-language version of the Atlas appeared with some changes to the original plates including the addition of German captions. All components of both editions are very rare on the market; nor are they widely held in institutions. In Australia the full Russian edition (text and Atlas) is held only by the National Library and the State Library of New South Wales. However, according to Trove at least, no copy of the important St Petersburg printing of the German language account is held by either library; a single example of the text volumes is recorded at the State Library of Victoria. The work is very much better known from the subsequent simplified edition in German published shortly afterwards by Haude and Spener in Berlin. Krusenstern has chosen a wonderful epithet from the voyage historian De Brosses to put on the three title-pages of his narrative: "Les Marins écrivent mal, mais avec assez de candour" [Sailors write badly, but with great honesty"].

Exquisite natural history for young people. The first French edition of Thomas Smith's exquisite natural history for young people. An immaculate set, in completely original condition. Gumuchian reports that this original edition was such a success that successive editions appeared in the years that followed. This production stands apart from other juvenile natural history primers for the fineness of its engravings, which are of exceptional quality. Some four hundred and thirty species of fish, mammals, amphibians, reptiles and birds are described, sixty-five of which are illustrated. The description of 'le kanguro' is interesting because it records and describes a number of live specimens in Europe, including those at the royal gardens at Richmond, 'un couple de très beaux kanguros' at an exposition at Exeter-Change of 1806, as well as 'une très belle variété' which had arrived in England on the frigate Lady Barlow. The description is accompanied by an engraving of a man boxing a kangaroo.

        Tours in Wales. With Notes

London: Wilkie and Robinson, 1810. Three volumes, octavo; engraved frontispiece and plates, some foxing; half morocco, marbled boards, top edge gilt. Thomas Pennant born in 1726, he was a prominent ornithologist and zoologist and prolific author of the eighteenth century. His writings about natural history, topography and travel were based on his many tours of the British Isles and research into the world's animal kingdom. It was said that his writings achieved great success by always making dull scientific matters interesting. His circle of friends included Sir Joseph Banks and Captain James Cook, in 1771 he visited Banks shortly after he returned from his voyage around the world with Cook. It was at this time that Pennant came into possession of some of the specimens that Banks had bought back from the voyage and would later write about. The origins of the name Pennant Hills in the Cumberland area has long been debated, in recent times it has been argued that it was named after Thomas Pennant, apart from being an associate of Banks, he was a member of the Royal Society and known to senior people in the infant colony including Francis Grose the lieutenant-governor.

        Southern Emu Wren

London: circa, 1810. Original watercolour measuring 150 x 110mm., signed 'Howitt', fine condition, framed. Detailed original watercolour painting of an Australian Southern Emu Wren by Samuel Howitt (1756-1822). In A New Work of Animals (1818) Howitt describes his role somewhat intermediately: 'The artist, studious to attain correctness, hopes he may deserve the approbation of the natural historian, and assist the pencil of the designer who has not had an opportunity to pay the same attention to this branch of the art'. This original watercolour is a pleasing example of Howitt's ability as a natural history illustrator, with fine detailing of the claws, beak and plumage of the Southern Emu Wren. The pose of the bird in the painting may derive from William Bullock's innovation of having his specimens stuffed and mounted in a life-like manner. Provenance: the Howitt family, by descent, until dispersal of the collection in very recent times.

A Treatise on the Statute of Limitations

London: Printed for J. Butterworth, 1810. Octavo, with armorial bookplate of Barron Field; a very good copy in a handsome contemporary calf binding with elegant blind tooling. From the library of Barron Field with his bookplate. A significant contemporary legal text and pleasing association copy from the library of one of Australia's first civilian judges, first magistrate of the Supreme Court of Van Diemen's Land and Australia's first published poet. William Ballantine, Barrister and member of the Temple Bar published this definitive text in 1810, and it would have been a significant and useful work in Field's legal library, at a time when he was working on his important Analysis of Blackstone's Commentaries (London, 1811). In May 1816 was appointed to replace J. H. Bent as judge of the Supreme Court of Civil Judicature in New South Wales. He reached Sydney next February with his newly-wedded wife Jane in the exclusively female convict transport Lord Melville. He went on to an influential career, and was heavily involved with many benevolent societies. He left Australia for England in 1824, and was later appointed to a position in Gibraltar. Barron Field's knowledge of legislative precedent and procedure allowed him to clarify thorny and ambiguous legal issues in the fledgling colony, especially those relating to the emancipation of convicts. He earnt considerable hostility for curbing the legal rights of emancipated convicts to own land, sue the Court of Justice, and give evidence at trial. A Treatise on the Statute of Limitations primarily concerns property law, with chapters on writs for asserting the right to claim property, right of entry, torts etc: issues of critical importance in the early years of the colony where ambiguity existed in the the sale and division of land.

An Account of a Voyage to New South Wales ... [and] The History of New South Wales including Botany Bay, Port Jackson, Parramatta, Sydney and all its Dependancies

London: Jones, 1810. Two volumes, octavo; a fine pair with both works completely uncut in original boards, later paper title-labels; handsome matching slipcases. Matching pair uncut in original boards. A beautiful uncut set of Barrington's famous pair of works, rare in this condition. The History, with its seventeen full-page plates, is the first book on the new colony to contain coloured illustrations of Sydney; these are also among the earliest engravings to show proper settlement - only Collins' Account of the Colony (1798) having any earlier depictions. Despite questions about its actual authorship, this is a substantial and important account of early Sydney. The preface claims with some justice that 'no prior attempt has been made to produce a complete history of the Country itself, from its discovery, and an account of its inhabitants, their customs and manners…'. The matching Voyage volume provides considerable detail on eighteenth-century New South Wales not available elsewhere. It too is illustrated, with twelve full-page coloured plates, and a portrait of the notorious "author". Barrington had been transported on the Third Fleet of 1791, already a legend as a rogue, and over the next decade English publishers used his notoriety to produce books on transportation and the new colony for a public eager for information.

Autograph letter signed, to William Merry

London: Downing Street, 30 October, 1810. Small folio, 2 pp., legibly written in brown ink; original folds, reinforced on central fold, tipped into a quarter morocco binding. Long term consignment. Robert Peel and William Bligh. An important letter relating to the trial of George Johnston and his fellow rebels in London. The letter, written only days after Bligh's arrival in London, shows the interest necessarily being taken in the case by no less a figure than Sir Robert Peel, who had been appointed Under-Secretary to Lord Liverpool, Secretary of State for War and the Colonies, in 1810. Peel's role meant that he took charge of departmental correspondence with the colonies - everything, he later said, from Botany Bay to Prince Edward Island. This position led him to be involved in the 1811 prosecution of the case against the mutineers in what has since become famous as the "Rum Rebellion". The letter is written to William Merry, a long-serving official of the British government, who had himself been appointed Deputy Secretary at War in 1809 (see his obituary in the Gentleman's Magazine for June 1856). Peel writes: 'Captain Bligh late Governor of the Colony of New South Wales having represented to Lord Liverpool that the Persons named in the inclosed List have been brought from thence to be examined as Evidences in the Proceedings about to be instituted respecting the late Mutiny, and that it was necessary they should be subsisted, I have his Lordship's Directions to request you will move the Secretary at War to give orders that such amount of Subsistence as may appear reasonable to his Lordship may be issued to them respectively…'. The actual list of defence witnesses for the George Johnston/William Bligh "Rum Rebellion" trial of 1811 referred to in this letter has not survived. However, the witnesses in Bligh's defence were nineteen in all and included leading New South Wales men such as Robert Campbell, Palmer, Fulton, Gore and George Suttor. As the ADB notes, since Johnston's defence was justification, the trial was virtually Bligh's as well: the former's conviction was the latter's acquittal. This letter, written only five days after Bligh arrived in London from Sydney, is testimony to his troubled life and continued public humiliation.

An Account of a Voyage to New South Wales

London: Jones, 1810. Octavo, portrait frontispiece and nine handcoloured plates, folding map (laid down); some browning and staining but an adequate copy in contemporary half calf. Second edition with fine handcoloured plates. The second edition (first published 1803) of this substantial account of the voyage to New South Wales via the Cape of Good Hope, with incidents partly derived from Barrington's experience on the Third Fleet. Transported to New South Wales on the Third Fleet of 1791, Barrington was already a legendary hero in England, a prince of rogues. The English public's continuing interest in New South Wales and the fate of the transported convicts encouraged the publishers' greed: they compiled information from various sources to satisfy a public starved of accounts of the new colony since the books by Tench and Hunter in 1793. For better or worse, Barrington became the peg on which the less scrupulous London publishers hung their hats: how much if any of the extensive literature attributed to him was actually Barrington's work will always be a matter for conjecture, although it is generally accepted that his contribution was minimal if it even existed at all. But even if the whole "Barrington" canon is a concoction from other sources, the 80 entries in Ferguson demonstrate the great popularity that his accounts had with the contemporary reader. These early editions represent the form in which information about New South Wales and the voyage there reached those of the public who could not afford the expensive quartos published by members of the First Fleet.

1810. A Paris, chez De Bure, 1810. 8 (including halftitle and title), xxiii,423, 6pp. Original blue wrappers, spine (with titleshield) heavily damaged, but binding holding well. Uncut. Priced throughout in a contemporary hand. Reprint of an earlier catalogue for a sale that was supposed to take place in 1808. Caillard (1737-1807) was a French diplomat and man of letters. His was an important library containing notable incunabula, classical texts, scientific and natural history works, and voyages in the finest possible condition and often printed on large paper. Also included are manuscripts and fine bindings. According to Graesse, this catalogue (2650 items described) is based upon an earlier printed inventory (Paris, Crapelet, 1805); the sale did not actually take place for another two years (1810, November 26 - January? 1811), at which time copies of the 1808 edition were reissued, with a new cancel titlepage dated 1810. The work has an extensive index. Our copy has the four page schedule of the sale (between halftitle and title) that is very rare! The last 6 pages contain a catalogue: Ouvrages nouveaux qui viennent de paroître chez De Bure père et fils, Libraires de la Bibliothèque Impériale, rue Serpente, no. 7 [c.f.
