Later half vellum over boards, slightly soiled. A fine and fresh copy, with all margins intact. A fine copy, printed on thick paper. The Cedula follows two previous ones made by Charles III in 1778 and 1785 (Real cedula de ereccion de la Compañia de Filipinas de 10 de marzo de 1785), amending and updating them. Under Carlos III a far-reaching change in Spanish colonial commercial policy was introduced, by which the government gradually removed the restrictions on trade between Spain and the colonies. The Compania de Caracas had lost its monopoly in 1781, although it had not been abolished. It had suffered financially during the American War of Independence, and in 1785 it stockholders accepted a proposal to dissolve the Company and to invest their capital in a new Company with a monopoly of trade with the Philippine Islands. The new organization, the Compania de Filipinas, succeeded in increasing trade between Spain and a hitherto dormant possession. Engraved royal arms of Charles V (1788 ¿ 1808) as frontispiece. She had considerable popularity both as a poet and dramatist, before her prose writings established her literary reputation. Cosi fan tutte, with text by Lorenzo da Ponte, was commissioned by Emperor Joseph II and first performed on January 26th 1790 at the Burgtheater in Vienna. Cosi was Mozart's "third collaboration with Da Ponte and the only one of the Da Ponte operas for which there is no direct literary source (although, like Don Giovanni, it has sources in Tirso de Molina). It may be that the libretto was wholly original to Mozart and the poet, for the subject is sometimes claimed to have been suggested to Mozart and Da Ponte by Joseph II himself, allegedly on the basis of a recent real-life incident...""Così fan tutte is widely reckoned to be the most carefully and symmetrically constructed of the Da Ponte operas."       London: 1810 - Image size 400 x 770mm. Framed size 690 x 1030 mm Fine condition. Presented in handmade gold leaf frame. Coloured aquatint. In 1800 George Dance junior, the City's Clerk of the Works, commissioned William Daniell (1769-1837) to paint in oils and make an official aquatint for his grandiose scheme for improving the Port of London. This artistic success inspired Daniell to publish a series of coloured aquatint river views. This view depicts the Vauxhall Bridge (the bridge was eventually opened in 1816, after a number of setbacks).

It was a product of the new century, appearing first in January 1801. It began as a weekly issue until 1809, when it became monthly until its demise at the end of 1827. As with the many magazines that followed it, The Port Folio included numerous illustrations. Pagination: [i]-cxxix (these pages are the "Notes" which in this copy are bound in at the front.) and [1]-290 pp. Portrait, titlepage, dedication page, argument page, halftitle for Notes, Notes with errata notice and imprint, contents page, flytitle for Canto 1, text with flytitles to all the Cantos present. The halftitle before the portrait is not present. Frontispiece portrait engraving of Scott by Heath after a painting by Saxon. (The lower edge of this portrait shows a small damp stain.) This copy has two of the four possible watermarks "1809" and "W. Balston 1810 4." It also has the correct e're reading on page 86. Without the line beginning: End, under the text on p. 288. Todd & Bowden press figure 11 on p. xxiv. Full red morocco with five raised bands on the spine, gilt titling and a design incorporating a shamrock form in compartments on the spine. Richly gilt borders around the covers with a gilt-stamped design in the center of the covers. All edges gilt, marbled end papers. This copy is preserved in a two-tone polished wood slip case. The binding shows skillful restoration to the top edge of the spine and the cover corners. Some rubbing is present to the outer cover hinges and to the cover edges. "Lady of the Lake" established the reputation of Scott, who is probably the most popular English author after Shakespeare. It was popular and widely read. Weight is 5.5 lbs. Montagu includes chapters on: Dramatic Poetry, Historical Drama, Henry the IV both parts, Preternatural Beings, Macbeth, and the Death of Julius Caesar. Mrs. Montagu was well placed in literary circles of the day and was widely respected for her writing and study. Giacomo (or Jacopo) Barozzi (or Barocchio) da Vignola (often simply called Vignola) (1 October 1507 ? 7 July 1573) was one of the great Italian architects of 16th century Mannerism. His two great masterpieces are the Villa Farnese at Caprarola and the Jesuits Church of the Gesu in Rome. He is hailed as one of the three architects to have contributed to the spreading of Italian Renaissance architecture throughout Western Europe. His two published books helped formulate the canon of classical architectural style. The earliest, Canon of the five orders of architecture (first published in 1562, probably in Rome), presented Vignolas practical system for constructing columns in the five classical orders (Tuscan, Doric, Ionic, Corinthian and Composite) utilizing proportions which Vignola derived from his own measurements of classical Roman monuments. This relatively modern reprint collects his most significant works and philosophies, and contains, after the volumes introduction, an engraved plate depicting the five columns and detailing their features. Forty-three volumes bound in half-leather with marbled paper-covered boards. Twenty-eight volumes bound in quarter-leather with vellum-covered boards. All with spine labels and gilt lettering. With Shaw & Sons Law Stationers' label to the front pastedownof several Victoria-era volumes. With J. Goodwyn's book binders label on the front pastedown of a few volumes. Condition: The bindings are generally tight and firm. There are several very slightly strained inner hinges, which are still good and firm. There is only some mild wear to the extremities, with just some mild bumping and rubbing, with discolouration and marks to the boards. There is significant rubbing to the boards of several volumes,with loss to the paper coverings, and repairs to the paper-covered boards of a few volumes. The paper coveringshave been removed from the boards of 16 & 17 Vict. . There is scoring to the front board of 2 & 3 Gull. 4 [William IV]. There is lifting and occasional ink marksto the vellum-covered boards of several volumes, including copperplate signatures to the rear board of 5 Geo. 4. There are closed tears to the lifted vellum on the front board of 6 Geo. 4 and sections of wear to the vellum on the front board of 60 Geo. 3 & 1 Geo. 4. Internally the pages have scattered foxing, prominent to the first and last few pages, significant in several volumes. There isslight browning to the page edges. The title page ismissing from 21 & 22 Vict. , there is a repaired closed tear to the half-title of 26 & 27 Vict. , andvery occasional closed tears in a couple of volumes. Contemporary red morocco gilt, covers with wide decorative border in gilt and blind, composed from fillets, roll tools and star tools at each corner, expertly re-backed to style in red morocco, the spine in seven compartments with raised bands, lettered in the second, the others with repeat decoration in gilt, contemporary marbled endpapers Very rare series of beautiful and unusual design treatments for buildings, rooms and accessories. Each of the five styles (Greek, Roman, Gothic, Egyptian and Chinese) are represented by six plates (numbered [1]-6; 6 unnumbered; 13-18; [1]-6; and unnumbered. Landi, according to the title, was a professor at the University of Bologna and a member of the Clementine Academy, and he issued the present work from his address at the Sablonnière Hotel in London. This work is very rare: over the past thirty years only two other copies are listed as having sold at auction (one of which included only 24 plates). Landi appears to have issued at least two other equally rare works of a similar nature ( A Collection of Designs of Architecture, Decorations and Ornaments London: 1810, and Original Designs for Exterior and Interior Decorations, London: 1810). A copy with 30 plates which sold at auction (Christies 30 October 1996, lot 85) was in a binding made up from the original boards rebacked, but was described as appearing "to be complete". The present example has the plates bound in a different order to the Christie's copy but is otherwise the same. Lowndes II, p.1305. (21 x 16 inches). Attractively bound in half calf to style, red morocco label, gilt roundels to triple ruled compartments, marbled sides. Frontispiece torn, without loss, now professionally repaired and laid down, near contemporary ownership, and subsequent gift inscription to the title page, title page slightly browned and with off-setting from the frontispiece, light toning to the text, 2 pages with spatter of ink-splashes, snuff-burn to a couple of leaves, but overall a very good copy. Attractive folding engraved frontispiece of "The Duff going out on her first Missionary Voyage" under a near full press of sail. First edition. Uncommon, COPAC records only the SOAS copy, OCLC locates 12 other copies world-wide, five of them in Australia and New Zealand and five in the USA, two of these in Hawaii. "Although there are several account of James Wilson's life, sufferings and missionary voyage, this was the earliest biography of him to appear. Written anonymously, this lively telling follows Wilson's life from his birth in 1769 and early employment with the East India Company. The account relates the popular tale of his imprisonment by the French in India, his escape, and his subsequent recapture by soldiers of the maharajah of Mysore, then a bitter enemy of England. After his release, he quickly acquired considerable wealth and retired from trade in 1792, while still a young man. Wilson settled in Portsea, Hampshire, married, and in 1795 converted to an evangelical Christianity. He took notice of the London Missionary Society and offered his services to captain its ship, the Duff, on a voyage to deliver missionaries to South Pacific Islands. Four short chapters at the end of this volume deal with the progress of the various missions on Tahiti, Tongatabu, Port Jackson, and the Marquesas" (Hill). Sir Peter H. Buck (Te Rangi Hiroa) describes the expedition as the "last important British voyage to the Pacific during the eighteenth century," remarking on the "great changes in the native culture of the Polynesians" that the success of the mission wrought (Explorers of the Pacific, p47). Results that did not attend earlier Spanish efforts "because the Spanish authorities had failed to provide the missionaries with an armed guard to enable them to deliver their message of peace in safety." Etienne de Lavallée-Poussin (1735-1802) was a French interior decoration designer, printmaker and artist who spent many years honing his craft in Rome. The decorative forms in this volume were first produced in the 1780s, inspired by classical sources: the antiquities of Herculaneum, the grotesques of Raphael, and the designs on ancient Roman palaces and villas. Lavallée-Poussin contributed the great majority of designs for the book, although Guyot's 1810 engravings also feature compositions by Voisin, Le Clerc, Berthelot, de Claire, and Janneret.       London - Samuel Henry Alken (1810-1894) A Hurdle Race London: undated, late 19th century A set of 4 hand-colored aquatint engravings by Charles Hunt 23" x 27 ½" framed Samuel Henry Alken was born into an extensive family of successful sporting artists of Danish descent. He was the eldest son of his father, Henry Thomas Alken (1785-1851), whom was the most famous in Alken family of sporting artists. Samuel Henry Alken continued the family tradition of sporting art by illustrating this series of four horse-racing engravings. He was also known as Henry ‘Gordon’ Alken, and signed his artwork as such in an attempt to distinguish himself from his father, thus his name appears as "G Alken" on these engravings. Er hatte Kontakt zu Schülern und den Söhnen Bachs, seine meist in Sammeldrucken erschienen Kompositionen, u.a. Lieder, Klaviersonaten, Motetten, Choräle, wurden durch Carl Phillip Emanuel und Johann Sebastian Bach beeinflußt. Steinhoff: Salomon Corrodi und seine Zeit 1810-1892. Ein Schweizer Künstlerleben im 19. Jahrhundert, Fehraltorf 1992, vgl. 5Z; hier zeigt der Künstler dieselbe Mauer von der entgegengesetzten Seite.. Goethe zeichnete auf seiner italienischen Reise ein ganz ähnliches Zyklopenmauerwerk. Auch L Richter (1803-1887) und C. Wagner (1804-1867) studierten bei einer gemeinsamen Wanderung am 20. September 1824 dasselbe Motiv in Palästrina, nicht weit von Olevano gelegen (vgl. Kat. 87, Gemälde Ölstudien und Zeichnungen, Nr. 41 a & b, Galerie Joseph Fach, Frankfurt am Main 2005). Bereits 1832 erreichte Corrodi über Genua und Pisa Rom, wo er sich in F.L. Catels (1778-1856) Atelier ausbildete und bald auch zu der von ihm am meisten bevorzugten Malweise, der Aquarelltechnik, fand. In Rom, wo er fast sein gesamtes Leben verbrachte, wurde er von hochgestellten Persönlichkeiten wie z.B. Zar Nikolaus protegiert und war sehr erfolgreich. Auch das englische Königshaus kaufte zahlreiche seiner Werke. Corrodis Haus in Rom war bis zu seinem Tod beliebter Treffpunkt u.a. seiner Schweizer Landsleute.

The products of the Calcutta School in India were often albums of flora, fauna, and other exotic sights of India, made to be taken back to Britain. Of the varied subjects, bird studies such as this depiction of an Asian Paradise-Flycatcher may be deemed a classic type. Paintings of birds, animals, and flowers had been an important genre in Indian art since the time of the Mughal emperor Jahangir (1605-27), and the continuation of such subjects under British patronage was a natural extension of that established tradition, although the results were often quite different stylistically. . Für den Dresdner Kunsthändler Heinrich Rittner fertigte er kolorierte Umrissradierungen, Ansichten aus der Umgebung Dresdens und der Sächsischen Schweiz..

New York: Reprinted for Ezra Sargeant, 1810 - This early, interesting volume of the celebrated Quarterly Review is notable for the essay on Nelson by Robert Southey at pp. 218-262, reviewing four biographies. Southey wrote to Charles Danvers, 14 December 1809: "Yesterday I received a letter from Gifford requesting me to review the great life of Nelson, and offering me 20 guineas a sheet to do it . The Life of Nelson is by Stainer Clark, whose - laying unhallowed hands upon such a subject, I am desired not to spare." Editor William Gifford was "driven by circumstances to some omissions" as he wrote to Southey, but Murray subsequently reprinted the essay in its entirety as a separate book (1813). It is now recognized as one of the gems of English prose. Also in this volume are Southey's review of Vason's "Authentic Narrative of Four Years' Residence at Tongataboo, one of the Friendly Islands, in the South Sea", a contemporary notice of Ricardo's first separate publication, "The High Price of Bullion -", and several contributions on travel and exploration by John Barrow. Discussing Dentrecasteaux's "Voyage à la Recherche de la Pérouse", Barrow doubts the existence of cannibals (p. 38), a conviction subsequently repeated in other articles. Barrow's review of Staunton's "Ta Tsing Leu Lee; being the Fundamental Laws, and a Selection from the Supplementary Statutes of the Penal Code of China" begins "This is an extraordniary book in every point of view - the first book which has ever been translated immediately from the Chinese character into the English language." Elsewhere, rather disingenuosly, Barrow reviews a French translation of his "Voyage to Cochinchina". WITH several reviews by Sir Walter SCOTT: "Fatal Revenge: or the Family of Montorio: a Romance", Evans' "Old Ballads", Aikin's "Essays on Song Writing", and Evans' "Vocal Poetry" (Todd & Bowden 49A for the London edition). The reviews of Holford's "Wallace: or, the Flight of Falkirk. A Metrical Romance", pp. 63-69, and "Pursuits of Agriculture, a Satirical Poem, in Three Cantos" are also attributed to Scott. Peoples of the world, and their physiognomies. First edition of this delightful French physiognomical study of the peoples of the world, which compares the facial structures and features of various European races with those of Asians, Africans, and the native inhabitants of many newly-discovered regions including Nootka Sound, Kamchatka, the Sandwich Islands, New Zealand and Australia. The detailed text is illustrated with fine handcoloured engraved plates mainly derived from voyage accounts; for example, the portraits of natives of the Hawaiian Islands, Tanna and Nootka Sound are all based on images that appeared in the publications of Cook's voyages, while the image of an Australian Aborigine is based on the engraving after Nicolas Petit published in Péron's account of the Baudin expedition. This is a rare work, known to Ferguson only from his own copy, noted in the Addenda, and not recorded by Forbes in the Hawaiian National Bibliography.
